THE BOOK OF DANIEL,
Chapters 1-12
CHAPTER ONE
1:3: “eunuchs” = It is assumed that Daniel was a eunuch (castrated male). Archaeological evidence suggests that in Daniel’s time many court officials were eunuchs. Accordingly, Daniel and his companions were instructed by Nebuchadnezzar to “Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs,” this verse (Note: “Ashpenaz” is “the master,” while “Melzar” is “the prince of the eunuchs,” verses 10-11), to provide Daniel with food and training for royal service. Most compelling for Daniel being a eunuch is that found in Isaiah 39:7, which states: “And of thy [Hezekiah’s] sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.” While there is no specific Biblical evidence that Daniel was a eunuch, there is significant substantiation to suggest that he was.
1:4: “Children” = The Hebrew is “yeled,” and is better translated as “young man,” as in Genesis 4:23; First Kings 12:8; 12:14; with First Kings 12:10 stating, “the young men that were grown up.” It is estimated that Daniel was a little over 80 years old (see “Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary”) when he received the vision of the prophecy of the 70 weeks in Daniel, Chapter 9. Since he was a little more than 60 years in Babylon at this time, he could have been anywhere from 16-19 years of age when taken captive. This is working from the B.C. 605 date.
However, according to Jerome, in “adv. Jovin. 1:276, ed. Ven.” and Ignatius, in “ad Magnes. p. 56, ed. Cotel,” Daniel and his friends were 12 years of age. This is working from the B.C. 606 date, which should make Daniel even older than 16. According to “Easton’s Bible Dictionary,” Daniel was born in “about B.C. 623, during the reign of Josiah,” and taken to Babylon in B.C. 606, making him 17 years old.
“Daniel was but eighteen years old when brought into a heathen court in service to the king of Babylon, and because of his youth his noble resistance of wrong and his steadfast adherence to the right are the more admirable.” 4T:570.
1:6-7: “Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego” = Ancient kings would often recruit some of their best captives to serve in the royal palace, and thereby, in order to help switch their loyalty to the king and to their gods of the empire, they would assign to them names which correlated to their belief system. The entire process of training and name changing was intended to affect some kind of conversion and indoctrination that would result in a change of the captive’s worldview. A new name signals a change of ownership and a change of destiny. Thus, by renaming the captives, the Babylonians intend to assert their authority over them and force them to assimilate the values and culture of the Babylonians. The original Hebrew names, which point to the God of Israel, are thus replaced with names honoring the Babylonians foreign deities.
In addition, the king determines that the young men should eat from his table. Eating from the king’s food had deep implications in antiquity. It meant undivided allegiance to the king and reflected dependence on him. And as the food was usually offered to the god or gods of the empire, eating also had a profound religious meaning. It obviously meant acceptance of, and participation in, the king’s worship system.
Daniel means, “God is my judge.” While Daniel’s Chaldean name, “Belteshazzar,” means “the prince of Bel.” The Chaldean’s would want these Israelites to drop their worship of their God and begin to worship the gods of the Chaldean’s. This is the true purpose of the name given to Daniel. According to Josephus, in “Ant.” 10:10, 1, and “Epiphan. Opp.” 2:242, Daniel was descended from one of the highest families in Judah, and of “royal blood.”
According to Josephus, in “Ant.” 10:10, 1, and “Epiphan. Opp.” 2:242, Daniel was descended from one of the highest families in Judah, and of “royal blood.”

Hananiah means, “God has favored;” whose Babylonian name Shadrach, is probably the Sumerian form of the “Bah Kudurru-Aki,” meaning, “servant of Sin.” Not “sin” as in a “sinful” person. But “servant to the god Sin.”
Mishael means, “who is what God is;” whereas his Babylonian name Meshach meant, “Who is like Aku,” a Babylonian god.
Azariah means, “Jehovah has helped;” whereas his Babylonian name Abednego, breaks down to Abed, meaning “servant,” while “Nego” refers to the Babylonian god Nego, and thus Abednego means, “servant of Nebo.”

After learning this should we not be using their Babylonian names when speaking of them?
“Daniel’s name is placed first on the record because he exerted a strong influence over the other three, who looked upon him as a leader. Had he failed to take a firm stand for the right, had he pleased and indulged self, his companions also would have failed.” 4MR:129.
“When the people of Israel, their king, nobles, and priests, were carried into captivity, four of their number were selected to serve in the court of the king of Babylon. One of these was Daniel, who early gave promise of the remarkable ability developed in later years. These youth were all of princely birth. . . Perceiving the superior talents of these youthful captives, King Nebuchadnezzar determined to prepare them to fill important positions in his kingdom. That they might be fully qualified for their life at court, according to oriental custom, they were to be taught the language of the Chaldeans, and to be subjected for three years to a thorough course of physical and intellectual discipline.” RH, January 25, 1881.
“Horn” = A “horn” in the Bible is a symbol of “power,” my source for this being Habakkuk 3:4 and also Daniel 8:6&7, which is more powerful when coming from the same Book or writer.
1:7: “names” = “The king did not compel the Hebrew youth to renounce their faith in favor of idolatry, but he hoped to bring this about gradually. By giving them names significant of idolatry, by bringing them daily into close association with idolatrous customs, and under the influence of the seductive rites of heathen worship, he hoped to induce them to renounce the religion of their nation, and to unite with the worship of the Babylonians.” PK:481.
1:8: “the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank” = See my two Bible Studies: “BIBLICAL WINE” & “DINNING GOD’S WAY.”
According to verse 4, these slaves must have “no blemish,” and be “well favoured,” that is, “good looking.” It is interesting to note that this was the requirement of the Sanctuary sacrifices (see Lev. 21:16-24 & 22:17-25). Therefore, when Daniel proposed to “Melzar,” verse 11, “prince of the eunuchs,” verse 10, “with the portion of the king’s meat,” is not only a test for the Hebrew worthies, but the “Melzar” himself, of which he states, “I fear my lord the king,” verse 10. And the fact that the “ten” day test (verse 12) is successful, is proof of God’s original design in His dietary Commands, of which we should be obeying today.
Also, this is a great witness to others that by being obedient to our God, He will bless the outcome. Who knows what other effects this had on “Melzar” and his companions, who must have been favorable of these Hebrew slaves in the first place because of something he saw in them.
“The fact that they, the worshipers of Jehovah, were captives to Babylon; that the vessels of God’s House had been placed in the temple of the gods of Babylon; that the king of Israel was himself a prisoner in the hands of the Babylonians, was boastfully cited by the victors as evidence that their religion and customs were superior to the religion and customs of the Hebrews. Under such circumstances, through the very humiliations that Israel’s departure from His Commandments had invited, God gave to Babylon evidence of His supremacy, of the holiness of His requirements, and of the sure result of obedience. And this testimony He gave, as alone it could be given, through those who still held fast their loyalty.” Education, page 54.
1:9: “prince of the eunuchs” = Although the Bible does not specifically mention that Daniel was a “eunuch,” it is well established historically, and agreed upon by most Bible commentators, that Babylon performed this act on captured nations that would serve in the king’s court. However, what is missed by most is the reasoning for this act. Most believe it was to keep the captive’s attention away from all the ruler’s wives and concubines that would be in and around the king’s court. No, No. It was so that these captives would not procreate and thus pass on their values from their old nations they came from. They were to be totally and completely indoctrinated into the Babylonian system of beliefs and teachings.
1:12: “pulse” = This is the same Hebrew word God used in Genesis 1:29 when He told Adam, “I have given you every herb bearing seed [zorea; zera].” However, although this may have been a vegetarian diet here, Daniel was not a vegetarian (see Dan. 10:3).
1:17: “these four children” = “These youth had the Lord as their educator. The golden links of the chain of Heaven connected the finite with the infinite. They were partakers of the Divine nature. They were very careful to keep themselves in touch with God. They prayed and studied and brought into their practical life strictly conscientious, humble minds. They walked with God as did Enoch. The Word of the Lord was their meat and their drink.” SpTA09:60; RC:143; 20MR:116.
CHAPTER TWO
2:ALL: See my Bible Study: “WORLD HISTORY, BIBLICAL.”
2:1: “second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar” = Since all Astronomers agree that Nebuchadnezzar’s 37th regnal year is fixed, beyond doubt, at B.C. 568/567, his “second year” would equal B.C. 603/602.
“dreamed dreams” = These dreams are given in Nebuchadnezzar’s 2nd year of his reign. That doesn’t work out if Daniel had been training for 3 full years. There are two explanations. The record states that these captives trained for 3 years (Daniel 1:5). First of all, the reign in these different countries was determined on a calendar bases. As an example to our system, if you came in to reign in February of 2000, your reign would not begin to be counted until January of 2001.
Therefore, your first year of reign would be January of 2002. But in our system, you would have been considered to have reigned 2 years, instead of what they would consider only one. Therefore, Nebuchadnezzar was probably reigning a good full year before the first year of his reign started. Secondly, one of the difficulties in trying to date these things Biblically is what secular history does. We have what they call the Ascension year, and the regnal year (which is his first full year of reign), etcetera.
“The King of kings was about to communicate great truth to the Babylonian monarch. God would reveal that He has power over the kingdoms of the world, power to enthrone and to dethrone kings. Nebuchadnezzar’s mind was to be awakened, if possible, to a sense of his responsibility to Heaven.” PK:498.
“The power exercised by every ruler on the earth is Heaven-imparted; and upon his use of the power thus bestowed, his success depends. To each the word of the Divine Watcher is, ‘I girded thee, though thou hast not known Me.’ Isaiah 45:5. And to each the words spoken to Nebuchadnezzar of old are the lesson of life: ‘Break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor: if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquility.’ Daniel 4:27. To understand these things, -- to understand that ‘righteousness exalteth a nation;’ that ‘the throne is established by righteousness,’ and ‘upholden by mercy;’ to recognize the outworking of these principles in the manifestation of His power who ‘removeth kings, and setteth up kings,’ -- this is to understand the philosophy of history. Proverbs 14:34; 16:12; 20:28; Daniel 2:21. In the Word of God only is this clearly set forth. Here it is shown that the strength of nations, as of individuals, is not found in the opportunities or facilities that appear to make them invincible; it is not found in their boasted greatness. It is measured by the fidelity with which they fulfill God’s purpose.” PK:502.
2:3-5: “dreamed a dream” = “The Lord in His providence had a wise purpose in view in giving Nebuchadnezzar this dream, and then causing him to forget the particulars, but to retain the fearful impression made upon his mind. The Lord desired to expose the pretensions of the wise men of Babylon.” YI, Sept. 1, 1903.
2:10-11: “[10] There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king's matter [11] there is none other that can shew it before the king, except the gods” = It must be here noticed that the Chaldeans deny their authority with “the gods,” whom they claimed to have access before this event.
2:11: “whose dwelling is not with flesh” = Notice that the Babylonians did not think that “the gods” would ever come down and dwell in human flesh; but Christians know/knew better. Our God want s to Sanctuary with, become part of us, “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” Colossians 1:27.
2:27: “cannot the wise men” = Daniel lets the king know that these people he is employing to speak to their false gods, are not really talking to them.
2:29: “what should come to pass hereafter” = Herein lies the purpose of the dream.
2:30: “this secret is not revealed to me” = He says this in order to give the credit to Who deserves to receive it, i.e., God. That Daniel is attempting to disclose to the king the True God here should not be missed.
2:31: “a great image” = “The inferior value of silver as compared with gold will naturally suggest some degree of decline or degeneracy in the character of the subject represented by the metal; and so in other members, as we proceed downward, as the material becomes continually baser, we naturally infer that the subject deteriorates, in some sense, in the like manner.” Professor Bush, “in loc.” Speaking on the kingdom represented by this, and the propriety of this representation. As found in “Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible.”
“The image revealed to Nebuchadnezzar, while representing the deterioration of the kingdoms of the earth in power and glory, also fitly represents the deterioration of religion and morality among the people of these kingdoms.” YI, September 22, 1903; 1MR:50; 4RH:151.
2:32: “gold” = The Bible’s identification and association of “gold” applying to Babylon is seen in verses 36 and 38, and in Isaiah 14:4; Jeremiah 51:7; and Revelation 18:10 & 16.
“silver” = Although silver cannot be shown to apply to Media-Persia in the Bible, except as being the second of the kingdoms to arise, as such we must go to Daniel 2:39; 5:28; 8:20; 10:20. However, secular history shows us that silver was used in the Persians taxation system.
“brass” = Along with Daniel 8:21 and 10:20 mentioning that “Grecia” would follow Persia, Ezekiel 27:13 portrays the Greeks (“Javan”) as bartering with brass vessels. Secular history tells us of Greek soldiers as being noted for their bronze (brass) armor, as shown by Herodotus, in his book, “The Histories,” 2.152, which tells us that “Psammetichus I of Egypt” saw in invading Greek pirates the fulfillment of an oracle that foretold of “men of bronze coming from the sea.”
2:33 & 42: “iron” = High-School history and world history tells us that the next kingdom is Rome, with Iron being a fit representation of such. From “Albert Barns Notes on the Bible,” we read: “Mr. Gibbon: ‘The arms of the Republic, sometimes vanquished in battle, always victorious in war, advanced with rapid steps to the Euphrates, the Danube, the Rhine, and the ocean; and the images of gold, or silver, or brass, that might serve to represent the nations and their kings, were successively broken by the ‘iron’ monarchy of Rome.’ -- ‘Dec. and Fall,’ p. 642, Lond. ed. 1830, as quoted by Prof. Bush.”
“feet part of iron and part of clay” = This indicates a mixture of the Roman empire; better understood as we move along in this Book, as Pagan Rome (the governmental portion) and Papal Rome (the religious system).
“We have come to a time when God’s sacred work is represented by the feet of the image in which the iron was mixed with the miry clay. . . statesmen will uphold the spurious Sabbath, and will mingle their religious faith with the observance of this child of the Papacy. . . The mingling of church craft and state craft is represented by the iron and the clay. . . They have invested their strength in politics, and have united with the Papacy.” 1MR:51; 15MR:39.
2:34 & 43: “Thou sawest till” = Second Coming text (see Dan. 2:44-45; 7:27; 8:25; 12:1 & 7), the “till” being, “Thou sawest [all the way] until” the Second Coming of our Lord.
“a Stone” = See Daniel 2:45; 7:27; 8:25; 12:1 & 7; Revelation 18:21.
“was cut out without hands” = Whereas, to some extent, the symbolism or the metals and clay are products of human manufacture, the “Stone” in the dream comes untouched by human hands. In other words, although each of the previous kingdoms eventually come to an end, the Kingdom represented by the “Stone,” i.e., Jesus, will last forever.
“smote the image upon his feet” = One cannot stand without ones “feet.” Thus, Christ’s Second Coming and the destruction of the wicked at that event is here seen as well as in Second Thessalonians 2:8.
2:35: “chaff of the summer threshingfloors” = Chaff is the dry, scaly protective casing of the seeds of cereal grains. When they have finished their protection duties, they are good for nothing. Once valued, their true condition, of which this is speaking of, can be found by seeing Psalm 1:4; 35:5; Isaiah 17:13; 29:5; 33:11; Hosea 13:3; Zephaniah 2:1-2; Matthew 3:12; Luke 3:17.
2:38: “Thou art this head of gold” = Speaking of Nebuchadnezzar, with the ultimate meaning and application applying to the Nation of Babylon; as the narrative clearly goes on to prove.
2:39: “after thee shall arise another kingdom inferior” = Since the “thee” is Babylon, then the next king would prove to be Medio-Persia; proved by seeing Daniel 5:28; 8:20; 10:20.
“Inferior to thee” = From Lyman, in his work, “Hist. Chart,” we read: “. . .symptoms of decay and corruption were manifest in the empire; the national character gradually degenerated; the citizens were corrupted and enfeebled by luxury; and confided more in mercenary troops than in native valor and fidelity. The kings submitted to the control of their wives, or the creatures whom they raised to posts of distinction; and the satraps, from being civil functionaries, began to usurp military authority.”
“third kingdom” = This would equal Greece; proved by seeing Daniel 8:21; 10:20.
2:40: “fourth kingdom. . . strong as iron” = This would equal Rome (see Dan. 7:7 & 19 & 23); proved only by succession of the world’s kingdoms.
2:41: “kingdom shall be divided” = This would equal the same thing as Daniel 2:43: “not cleave.” See also Daniel 7:7. In other words, they cannot join together as one kingdom; not in agreement with each other.
2:42: “toes of the feet” = Since there are “ten” “toes” upon our “feet” (note the plural, not the singular “foot”) this would equal “ten kingdoms.” The “ten kingdoms” equate to the: Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, Vandals, Suevi, Alamanni, Anglo-Saxons, Heruli, Lombard’s, Burgundians. If we look at Daniel 7:7, we will also notice that these Nations (or any other Nation) will never again be able to establish a universal empire.
“We need not, and cannot, expect union among the nations of the earth. Our position in the image of Nebuchadnezzar is represented by the toes, in a divided state, and of a crumbling material, that will not hold together.” 1T:361.
“part of iron, and part of clay” = According to Jeremiah 18:6, the “clay” represents God’s people.
“The mingling of churchcraft and statecraft is represented by the iron and the clay. This union is weakening all the power of the churches. This investing the church with the power of the state will bring evil results. Men have almost passed the point of God’s forbearance. They have invested their strength in politics, and have united with the papacy. But the time will come when God will punish those who have made void His Law, and their evil work will recoil upon themselves.” 15MR:39.2.

2:43: “not cleave” = See my Daniel 2:41 Note.
2:45: “Stone” = Again, the “Stone” would equal Christ. Once again, this passage also has reference to, and is speaking of, the Second Coming of our Lord (see also Dan. 2:34; 7:27; 8:25; 12:1 & 7; Rev. 18:21).
2:47: “The king answered” = “[503] The king had acknowledged the power of God, saying to Daniel, ‘Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods. . . and a revealer of secrets.’ Verse 47 [of Chapter 2]. For a time afterward, Nebuchadnezzar was influenced by the fear of God; [504]
“but his heart was not yet cleansed from worldly ambition and a desire for self-exaltation. The prosperity attending his reign filled him with pride. In time he ceased to honor God, and resumed his idol worship with increased zeal and bigotry.” PK:503-504.

CHAPTER THREE
3:ALL: Take particular notice to the phrase, “set up.” We are told in Daniel 2:44 that “the God of Heaven set up a kingdom.” Whereas, in Daniel, Chapter 3 we find that Nebuchadnezzar (used by Satan when evil, used by God when allowed) would counteract that possibility by “setting up” his (Satan’s counterfeit) kingdom, no less than 7 times (Dan. 3:2 [twice] & 3 & 5 & 7 & 12 & 14 & 18). Notice also that this is an endorsement of church and state getting together to force worship practices, which will escalate in the end times (the 666 of the Book of Revelation).
3:1: “made an image of gold” = Notice that Nebuchadnezzar’s image is all of gold, for he intended that his kingdom would last forever.
“Light, direct from Heaven, had been permitted to shine upon King Nebuchadnezzar, and for a little time he was influenced by the fear of God. But a few years of prosperity filled his heart with pride, and he forgot his acknowledgment of the living God. He resumed his idol worship with increased zeal and bigotry.
“From the treasures obtained in war, he made a golden image to represent the one that he had seen in his dream, setting it up in the plain of Dura, and commanding all the rulers and the people to worship it, on pain of death. This statue was about ninety feet in height and nine in breadth, and in the eyes of that idolatrous people it presented a most imposing and majestic appearance.” RH, February 1, 1881, par 10 & 11.
“plain of Dura” = The title “Dura” in Akkadian means “walled place,” and is supposed to five the impression of a vast Sanctuary. The Akkadian language was used until the Babylonian and Assyrian language displaced it. However, it is thought that “Dura” is a carryover from the Akkadian language.
3:5-6: “ye fall down and worship the golden image” = “The advisers of Nebuchadnezzar hit upon the scheme of ensnaring the Hebrew captives and causing them to bow to the idol by leading the king to proclaim that every knee should bow to the image.” 12MR:219.
3:6: “the fiery furnace” = As to “the fiery furnace,” history records, and it is known that Ashurbanipal, king of Assyria, says that his own brother, Shamash-shumukin, was burned in a similar furnace. See also Jeremiah 29:22.
3:8: “certain Chaldeans” = “These men who had thus accused the Hebrews had been saved from death by Daniel’s appeal to the king in their behalf, but they were envious of the three Hebrews, and were desirous of hurting their influence.” ST, May 6, 1897.
“Certain of the wise men, jealous of the honors that had been bestowed upon the faithful companions of Daniel, now reported to the king their flagrant violation of his wishes.” PK:506-507.
3:14: “Nebuchadnezzar spake and said unto them” = “As the three Hebrews stood before the king in their moral dignity, innocence, and purity, he was convinced that they were superior to the men in his kingdom. They had always been faithful in the performance of their duties, and he decided that he would be gracious, and give them a second trial. . . And then, with hand stretched upward in defiance, he asked, [verse 15 end quoted]. . . When the king saw that his will was not received as the will of God, he was ‘full of fury,’ and the form of his visage was changed against these men. Satanic attributes made his countenance of a demon; and with all the force he could command, he ordered that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than its wont, and commanded the most mighty men to bind the youth, and cast them into the furnace. He felt that it required more than ordinary power to deal with these noble men. His mind was strongly impressed that something unusual would interpose in their behalf, and his strongest men were ordered to deal with them.” ST May 6, 1897; 4BC:1169.
3:18: “nor worship the golden image” = “By the Babylonish captivity the Israelites were effectually cured of the worship of graven images.” DA:28; PK:705.
3:19: “seven times more than it was wont to be heated” = See Isaiah 43:2. The number “seven” even in ancient secular societies was considered to be the number of Deity. Thus, in essence Nebuchadnezzar was evoking the Hebrew worthies to worship the Babylonian god[s].
3:25: “the form of the fourth is like the Son of God” = When God sends you to the fire; He doesn’t send somebody else, He comes Himself. It may be possible that Nebuchadnezzar recognized this Individual, in that he had seen Him before in the dream given him of the image of Chapter 2.
“But the Lord did not forget His own. As His witnesses were cast into the furnace, the Saviour revealed Himself to [509] them in Person, and together They walked in the midst of the fire. In the presence of the Lord of heat and cold, the flames lost their power to consume.” PK:508-509.
“When the Son of God manifests Himself to men, an unseen power speaks to the soul that this is God.” RH, February 1, 1881.
“How did this heathen king know what the Son of God was like? Through their steadfast adherence to right principles, the Hebrew captives had been called to fill positions of trust in the courts of Babylon. They were tempted by others to be untrue, in order to gain advantages; but they were faithful in all their business transactions. In life and character they represented the truth; and when they were asked a reason for their course of action, they gave it without hesitation. Plainly and in simplicity they presented the living principles of the truth, and thus those around them were made acquainted with the Source of their strength. In this way the king of Babylon became acquainted with the form of the Son of God.” ST, May 6, 1897; RH, May 3, 1892.
CHAPTER FOUR
4:ALL: This Chapter is actually written by Nebuchadnezzar (see verse 37). Considering that, Nebuchadnezzar mentions “The Most High” 5 times, identifying “The Most High” as being “the King of Heaven,” verse 37.
4:13: “Watcher and an holy one came down from Heaven” = Nebuchadnezzar recognized that the Holy “Watcher” was “similar in appearance to the One who walked with the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace?” RH, February 1, 1881.
4:32: “seven times shall pass over thee” = Nebuchadnezzar’s son Evil-Merodach, regarding a radical change in Nebuchadnezzar’s character in which he is not attending to his responsibilities and has abandoned the worship of Marduk, is thought to have taken over the kingship duties.
According to the “Babylonian Chronicles,” in these Babylonian texts, the “mad king” was Nabonidus, a king who ruled two decades after Nebuchadnezzar and ended up losing the Babylonian Empire to the Persians. According to the records, King Nabonidus replaced the Babylonian gods with a new moon god and then led his troops on a strange campaign into the Arabian Desert to attack some towns, including Yathrib, the later Medina. He then dwelled the next 10 years in the Arabian city of Tayma. However, “This sojourn of Nabonidus in Arabia for 10 years is clearly the background of the story of Nebuchadnezzar in the wilderness,” according to the historian Frahm.
There is even physical proof of the Nabonidus story also being tied to a Hebrew sage. Four fragments discovered among the “Dead Sea Scrolls,” contain what is now known as the “Prayer of Nabonidus,” which reads: “I was afflicted [with an evil ulcer] for seven years... and an exorcist pardoned my sins. He was a Jew from among the [children of the exile of Judah, and said,] ‘Recount this in writing to [glorify and exalt] the Name of the [Most High God].’ ”
4:37: “I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honour the King of Heaven” = “The once proud monarch had become a humble child of God; the tyrannical, overbearing ruler, a wise and compassionate king. He who had defied and blasphemed the God of Heaven, now acknowledged the power of the Most High and earnestly sought to promote the fear of Jehovah and the happiness of his subjects. Under the rebuke of Him who is King of kings and Lord of lords, Nebuchadnezzar had learned at last the lesson which all rulers need to learn -- that true greatness consists in true goodness. He acknowledged Jehovah as the living God,” PK:521.
“those that walk in pride” = “The once proud monarch had become a humble child of God. . . God’s purpose that the greatest kingdom in the world should show forth His praise was now fulfilled. This public proclamation, in which Nebuchadnezzar acknowledged the mercy and goodness and authority of God, was the last act of his life recorded in sacred history.” PK:521.
“King Nebuchadnezzar, before whom Daniel so often honored the name of God, was finally thoroughly converted, and learned to ‘praise and extol and honour the King of Heaven.’ “ 4BC:1170.

CHAPTER FIVE
5:2: “ring the golden and silver vessels” = Understand the setting. Belshazzar is about to mock the God of the Israelites.
5:4: “praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone” = That they “praised” these senseless entities for things that they most likely attributed them for accomplishing shows the stupidity of such people. The doctrine of Evolution (see my Bible Study: “EVOLUTION, THE EVIL SOLUTION”) has replaced such nonsense.
It is worth noticing that six materials are mentioned. The Babylonians used the sexagesimal system (a system based on the number 60) in contrast to the decimal system used today (based on the number 10). Thus, the six categories of gods represent the totality of the Babylonian deities and therefore the fullness of the Babylonian religious system. Interestingly enough, the order of the materials follows the order of the components of the statue of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, except that wood replaces the clay.
5:6: “joints of his loins were loosed” = See Isaiah 45:1.
“his knees smote one against another” = “When God makes men fear, they cannot hide the intensity of their terror. Belshazzar was the most terrified of them all.” PK:524.
5:7: “third ruler” = Daniel was to be the “third ruler” in the kingdom; that is, next to the king and the queen mother; or to the king and the heir apparent; or one of the third principal rulers; or one of the three presidents of the kingdom, as Daniel afterwards was. However, officially Belshazzar was only a co-regent, for his father, Nabonidus, had fled south and was still the king of Babylon.
“Admitted to a share in kingly authority at fifteen years of age, Belshazzar gloried in his power, and lifted up his heart against the God of Heaven. He despised the One Who is above all rulers, the General of all the armies of Heaven. ‘Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand.’ On this occasion there was music and dancing and wine-drinking. The profane orgies of royal mirth were attended by men of genius and education. Decorated women with their enchantments, were among the revelers. {YI, May 19, 1898 par. 4}
“Exalted by wine and blinded by delusion, the king himself took the lead in the riotous blasphemy. Reason no longer controlled him; his lower impulses and passions were in the ascendency. His kingdom was strong and apparently invincible, and he would show that he thought nothing too sacred for his hands to handle and profane. To show his contempt for sacred things, he desecrated the holy vessels taken from the Temple of the Lord at its destruction. {YI, May 19, 1898 par. 5}
“A Watcher, who was unrecognized, but whose presence was a power of condemnation, looked on this scene of profanation. Soon the unseen and uninvited Guest made his presence felt. At the moment when the sacrilegious revelry was at its height, a bloodless hand came forth, and wrote words of doom on the wall of the banqueting hall.” YI, May 19, 1898 par. 4-6.
5:10: “the queen” = This would be “the queen-mother.” PK:527. She knows of Daniel and the God that Belshazzar has been rejecting all these years. Now he must face this rejected One and true God (see verse 23) through the merits of Daniel.
5:25: “Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin” = The repetition of the first word is a solemn emphasis, just like Jesus’ words, “verily, verily,” John 3:11; 5:24. The meaning of this statement is revealed in verse 27. However, it is very interesting to note that this was written in the Chaldean language, but the “wise men” of Babylon could not piece their own words together in order to make sense of it. The Divine graffiti consists of three Aramaic verbs, with the first being repeated.
“More than a century before, Inspiration had foretold that “the night of. . . pleasure” {Isa. 21:4} during which king and counselors would vie with one another in blasphemy against God, would suddenly be changed into a season of fear and destruction. And now, in rapid succession, momentous events followed one another exactly as had been portrayed in the prophetic scriptures years before the principals in the drama had been born.” PK:531.
“Mene” = “Mene” signifies “Numeration.
“Tekel” = “Tekel” means, “weighed.”
“Upharsin” = “Upharsin” transfers over to “Peres,” which means, “broken” or “divided,” implying “Division.”
So what they could have, and most likely did read, was, “Numbered, Numbered, weighed and divided.”
Belshazzar’s kingdom was about to be broken and divided between the Medes and the Persians. There is also a play on words here, because the consonants for the word divided are the same as for the name Persian (“paras”), from which we got “Peres” or, “Upharsin.”
5:27: “Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting” = According to the historian Herodotus, the Persians dug a canal to divert the Euphrates River and marched into the city on the riverbed, “Herodotus,” 1.189. See Isaiah 13:17-22 & 45:1-2.
“Then I was shown a company who were howling in agony. On their garments was written in large characters. ‘Thou art weighed in the balance, and found wanting.’ I asked who this company were. The angel said, ‘These are they who have once kept the Sabbath, and have given it up.’ ” LS:117.
“Belshazzar had been given many opportunities for knowing and doing the Will of God. He had seen his grandfather Nebuchadnezzar banished from the society of men. He had seen the intellect in which the proud monarch gloried taken away by the One Who gave it. He had seen the king driven from his kingdom, and made the companion of the beasts of the field. But Belshazzar’s love of amusement and self-glorification effaced the lessons he should never have forgotten; and he committed sins similar to those that brought signal judgments on Nebuchadnezzar. He wasted the opportunities graciously granted him, neglecting to use the opportunities within his reach for becoming acquainted with truth.” Bible Echo, April 25, 1898.
5:28: “Thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians” = Why did Babylon come to an end in the first place? Not really (only) because it was prophesied. But the main reason is because of Jeremiah 25:12: “And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity. . .”
Our God is a just God. If you want to live like a Babylonian, He will see to it that you are moved into Babylon. If you want to live like an Egyptian, He will see to it that you are moved into Egypt. If you want to live like an Assyrian, He will see to it that you are moved into Assyria. The same is true for Sodom, Gomorrah, etcetera. But if you want to live like you belong in Heaven, then. . .
5:30: “the Chaldeans slain” = “those who lived in the centre of Babylon had no idea that the suburbs had fallen, for it was a time of festival, and all were dancing, and indulging themselves in pleasures.” Herodotus, in his work, “The Histories, Tom Holland, Translation,” New York: Penguin, 2015, page 94.
CHAPTER SIX
6:10 & 13: “three times a day” = Here is my Psalm 55:17 Note: How often should we pray? According to Daniel 6:10 we are to pray “three times” a day. And according to Psalm 55:17, the time periods are: “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray.”
“Have a set time, a special season for prayer at least three times a day. Morning, noon, and at night Daniel prayed to his God, notwithstanding the king’s decree, and the fearful den of lions. He was not ashamed, or afraid to pray, but with his windows opened he prayed three times a day.” YI, October 1, 1855.
“Go by yourself and pray, at least three times a day, and do not let it end here, but while about your work, keep your heart uplifted to God for strength and grace, that you may do all to the glory of God. By thus doing you can shut out vain and foolish thoughts, and there will be but little room for the temptation of the enemy.” YI, May 1, 1854.
“Pray three times a day, and like Jacob, be importunate [meaning, “demanding and forceful”].” RH, August 15, 1882; CG:501; 5T:164; AUGA:277.
“It is just as convenient, just as essential, for us to pray three times a day as it was for Daniel. Prayer is the life of the soul, the foundation of spiritual growth.” ST, February 10, 1890; DG:83; RC:207.
“Daniel was a statesman; yet three times a day he sought God, and the Lord gave him of His Holy Spirit.” 20MR:390.
“Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes because an excellent spirit was in him. Fallen angels feared his influence would weaken their control over the rulers of the kingdom, for Daniel was high in command. The accusing host of evil angels stirred up the presidents and princes to envy and jealousy, and they watched Daniel closely to find some occasion against him that they might report him to the king, but they failed. Then these agents of Satan sought to make his faithfulness to God the cause of his destruction. Evil angels laid out the plan for them, and these agents readily carried it into effect.” RH, February 18, 1862.
6:15: “That no decree nor stature which the king establisheth may be changed” = This is also mentioned in Esther 1:19 & 8:8. According to historian Diodorus Siculus, an ancient Greek historian between B.C. 60-30, in his writing “Bibliotheca Historica,” he mentions an occasion when Darius III (not to be confused with the Darius mentioned in Daniel) changed his mind but could no longer repeal a death sentence he had passed on an innocent man.
6:16 & 20: “serve” = The verb “serve” can also be translated as “worship.” It appears nine times in Daniel, Chapters 3-7 (Dan. 3:12 & 14 & 17 & 18 & 28; 6:16 & 20; 7:14 & 27) and conveys the idea of paying homage to a Deity. So, as a consequence of the attempt to change the Law of God, the religious system represented by the little horn corrupts the worship due to God. The judgment portrayed here shows that true “worship” is eventually restored. The “worship” system set by the Papal system, among other elements, places a fallen human being as a mediator between God and humanity. Daniel shows that the only Mediator capable of representing humanity before God is the Son of Man (see 1Ti. 2:5).
It is argued that the Aramaic word used here for “serve” is “pelah,” and literally means “work.” That is true. However, in the Book of Daniel, this word is clearly seen to be used for “worship” if you go to and compare with Daniel 3:14 & 28. Verse 28 in particular, clearly teaches “serve nor worship.” Or better, “worship or worship.” Emphasizing the term. You would not translate it as “work or worship.” You could say “work for,” but the emphasis would be lost. The Aramaic “pelah” is reserved specifically when in contest of gods, for “worship,” whether false gods or not.
6:17: “And a stone was brought, and laid upon the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet, and with the signet of his lords” = For the “stone” see Matthew 27:60; Mark 15:46; Luke 24:2; John 20:1. For the “sealing,” see Matthew 27:65-66. Or, in other words, make sure he cannot come up out of that den. This passage is none other than the foretelling of the conditions before the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
CHAPTER SEVEN
7:ALL: See my Bible Study: “WORLD HISTORY, BIBLICAL.”
7:1: “first year of Belshazzar” = According to Josephus, in his “Antiqu. Jud.” l. 10. c. 11. sect. 4, Belshazzar reigned for 17 years. And according to many Bible commentators, this would be around B.C. 555, “Chronological Tables, cent. 10.”
7:2: “four winds” = According to Jeremiah 25:32-33, “winds” represent “speed.”
7:3: “four great beasts” = We do NOT need to wonder what is going to be explained next, for verse 17 tells us that these following “beasts” are “four kings,” or better, “four kingdoms,” because you cannot have a “king” without a “kingdom,” that will arise one after the other.
7:4: “lion” = Babylon (see Dan. 2:38). The prophet Jeremiah helps us here in establishing that the “lion” is a symbol of the nation of Babylon in Jeremiah 4:7 & 50:17 (see 49:19 also). The historian Hypocatastasis, in his work, “Not Simile of Metaphor,” he identifies the king of Babylon with the figurehead of a “lion.”
7:5: “bear” = Medio-Persia (see Dan. 8:20).
“one side” = This equates to Persia becoming greater than Media.
“three ribs” = Media-Persia conquered the nations of Lydia, Egypt, & Babylon in order to become the new superpower of the world; replacing Babylon.
7:6: “leopard” = Greece (see Dan. 8:21).
“four wings” = Most Bible commentators agree that “wings” in Biblical prophetic language equates to “speed.” And although Babylon was swift in its conquests -- note the “eagle’s wings” which it was accredited to have in verse 4 -- historians all agree that the speed with which Alexander The Great conquered the then known world at the time was remarkable. He did it in just 3 years, while Nebuchadnezzar accomplished it in 13 years. Thus, “four wings” as opposed to one set of “wings.”
“four heads” = This well represents the four generals with which the kingdom of Greece was passed onto when Alexander The Great died; those being Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus, Ptolemy (see Dan. 8:8 & 22).
7:7: “fourth beast. . . iron teeth” = Rome (see Dan 2:33-34 & 40-43 & 45; 7:7 & 19).
“ten horns” = Ten kingdoms = Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, Vandals, Suevi, Alamanni, Anglo-Saxons, Heruli, Lombards, Burgundians (see Dan. 2:42; 7:20 & 24).
The Ostrogoths eventually settled in Africa; The Visigoths settled in Spain; The Franks in France; The Vandals in North Africa; The Suevi are today’s Germans; The Alamanni spread to Alemannic German, encompassing the dialects of the southern two thirds of Baden-Wurttemberg (German State), in western Bavaria (German State), in Vorarlberg (Austrian State), Swiss German in Switzerland; The Anglo-Saxons and Angles settled in Britain; The Heruli and Turingi in Italy; The Lombards at first upon the Danube, afterwards in Italy; The Burgundians in Burgundy.
Now we can see why (in verse 8) three of them did not survive, because they either remained in Italy where the “little horn” would exert its power, i.e. Heruli & Lombards, or as with the Vandals, were overtaken by the Muslims.
7:8: “there came up among them” = Meaning from out of the “ten horns,” or better, ten kingdoms; not one of them.
“before whom” = Does not mean “before” 538 A.D. But rather, fell by Rome’s power against them. It is the same as the expression in Daniel 7:10, “A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him.” And, “stood before Him.”
“little horn” = Papal Rome (see Dan. 8:9).
“three of the first horns plucked up by the roots” = The nations of the Heruli, Vandals, Ostrogoths were conquered by this “little horn.” See Daniel 7:20 where, “three fell,” [of the “ten horns”] and Daniel 7:24 where, “he shall subdue three kings.” Notice that they were not just “plucked up,” but they were “plucked up by the roots,” meaning that they were destroyed, as history confirms. The wars against the “three” nations began in 476 A.D. and ended in 538 A.D. when Pagan Rome passed over to Papal Rome once these “three” enemies were conquered and destroyed. However, more evidence has come forward. See my Notes in Daniel 7:20 & 24.
The Aramaic word for “plucked out by the roots,” is “aqal, H6132,” in its “Hitpael” form, denotes an emphatic action of “tearing out, uprooting out of its place.” No “roots” left, not even a branch.
7:8 & 8:9: “in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things” = Positive Identification of the “little horn” as Papal Rome:
1) It came up from among the “ten horns” placing it geographically in Western Europe (Dan. 7:8).
2) It arises out of Rome just like the ten kingdoms did (Dan. 7:24).
3) According to Daniel 7:7-8 & 24, the 10 kingdoms came “out of this kingdom,” in the area of Rome. Therefore, all 10 kingdoms preceded Rome. So it arouse after the “ten horns” because it “came up among them,” Daniel 7:8, thus it would be establishing itself after (about) 476 A.D. when the “ten horns” (Rome “divided” Dan. 2:41) were already established.
4) It uproots “three of the first horns,” Daniel 7:8 & 20 & 24, as history shows (7 of those 10 tribes are still in existence today), and history also shows that Papal Rome conquered the Heruli, Vandals and Burgundians when it came into power.
5) According to Daniel 8:9, Pagan Rome must be depicted here, for it seeks to conquer earthly territory, while the following verses (10-12) teach a progression (“waxed great,” verse 10) into a spiritual warfare against Heavenly things (“speaking great things,” Dan. 7:8 & 20 = blasphemy against God).
6) It becomes greater than the other kingdoms of divided Rome according to Daniel 7:20, in that it “was more stout than his fellows;” the remaining seven which it did not uproot (Dan. 7:8).
7) Although Daniel 7:23 teaches us that the “fourth kingdom. . . shall be diverse from all [of the other] kingdoms,” Daniel 7:24 teaches us that the little horn “shall be diverse from the first.” The Aramaic word for “first” is “qadmay,” and comes from the Aramaic word “qudam,” meaning, “to project one’s self, precede, come before, prevent.” Thus, it would be better expressed that the “little horn” came “from the former [horns].” So, “he shall be diverse from the first,” Daniel 7:24, indicates that it would be different than all of the other purely politically based powers that preceded it. What is the difference? It is a political as well as a religious power. The Papacy (Papal Rome) was an ecclesiastical kingdom ruled over by a pontiff, while the other kingdoms were strictly political powers, ruled by kings.
8) It has “a mouth speaking great things,” Daniel 7:8, (see also Dan. 7:20 & 25; Rev. 13:1 & 6; 17:3) in that “he shall speak great words against the Most High,” Daniel 7:25. Revelation 13:5, in identifying this power states it thus, “speaking great things and blasphemies.” Only Papal Rome can be associated with these characteristics, which is blasphemy against God.
There are 8 explanations Biblically which are blasphemy against God. See my Bible Study, “BLASPHEMY, WHAT IS BIBLICAL.” For the ones prominent here, see below.
Quickly, Biblical blasphemy is (see my Bible Study: “BLASPHEMY; BIBLICAL”):
A) Claiming to be one with God (see Mat. 26:63-65; Mark 14:61-64; John 10:30-36) -- The Pope claims to be “The Vicar of Christ;”
B) Claiming to forgive sins (see Mat. 9:2-3; Mark 2:7; Luke 5:21) -- The Pope claims to be able to forgive sins;
C) To commit a trespass against God by breaking His Law (Eze. 20:27; Rom. 2:22-24) -- In this case accomplished by the changing, or being able to claim to be able to change God’s Law, i.e., Sabbath to Sunday);
D) Presents a false representation of the character of God (see 1Ti. 6:1) -- Covered in “A” above.
9) He “shall think to change Times and Laws,” Daniel 7:25. No better application of prophecy can adequately apply than Rome’s change of (time) the weekly cycled Sabbath (in God’s Law) from Saturday to Sunday, and the dividing of the Tenth Commandment (“and Laws”) in order to keep the number at 10 (Commandments). See my Bible Study: “SABBATH STILL VALID TODAY, BIBLICAL.”
10) He “shall wear out the saints of the Most High,” Daniel 7:25. See also Daniel 7:21; 8:10 & 24-25. These verses tell us that the “little horn” is a persecuting power (has the Papacy been a persecuting power?) and will “make war,” Daniel 7:25 & Revelation 13:7, against God’s people and will “wear out,” Daniel 7:25, or better, “put them to death.” “In 1252 [Pope] Innocent IV sanctioned the infliction of torture by the civil authorities upon heretics, and torture later came to have a recognized place in the procedure of the inquisitorial courts.” “New Catholic Encyclopedia” (Washington, D.C.: “The Catholic University of America,” 1967), vol. 14, p. 208: “Torture and the Church.”
11) They shall “be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time,” Daniel 7:25. Let’s break that down. “A Time” equals “one year.” “Times” would be “two years.” And “half a time,” would equal “half of a year.” It is elsewhere described as 42 months, Revelation 11:2, where it is explained as equaling 1260 years, in Revelation 12:3 (see also Rev. 12:6) of which the Papal reign fits exactly (538 A.D. – 1798 A.D.).
For the Biblical principle of a prophetic “day” equaling a “year” in prophecy see Genesis 29:27; Numbers 14:34; First Samuel 20:6; Psalm 90:10; Ezekiel 4:5; and then see Genesis 6:3.
12) “Eyes of man, and a mouth” would mean that there is a leader of this group that is the mouthpiece of it (the pope) and would see, or direct the way in which it will go (Vicar of Christ; claiming to be the representative or God Himself).
“The prophet Daniel declared that the Roman church, symbolized by the little horn. . .” 4SP:279.
7:8 & 11 & 20 & 25: “(8) mouth speaking great things. . . (11) great words. . . (20) spake very great things. . . (25) speak great words against the most High” = This is none other than “Blasphemy.” Here is my Revelation 13:1 Note: This term, “blasphemy” will be a key term in understanding what is going to become the theme for the rest of Revelation. The beast is described as carrying “the name of blasphemy,” which means that he claims his name as being the only one worthy of a title; a title, which belongs to God alone.
7:9: “His wheels as burning fire” = See Ezekiel 1:15-2:3.
7:10: “the Books were opened” = Note the plural word, “Books.”
The Book of Remembrance: “a Book of Remembrance was written before Him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His Name.” Malachi 3:16.
The Book of Works: “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” Ecclesiastes 12:14.
“That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” Matthew 12:36.
“And whosoever was not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:15.
The “Book of Life” is not one of them, for those in this Book have already been determined to be saved.
7:13: “like the Son of Man” = Seeing God in human form.
This is a Title that is used of Christ often in the New Testament, with Jesus even using this Title Himself (example, Mat. 8:20). The Arabic word here used for “man” is “enas.” The phrase is often used to differentiate mankind from Deity. That is not the case here. What Daniel saw is what theologians classify as a “Theophany,” or better, “The manifestation of God [Christ] in human form; before He literally becomes human.” An example of this is found in Genesis, Chapter 18. Thus, the phrase, “like the.” Daniel was spiritually developed enough to realize that he was seeing Someone Who looked “like” mankind, but also had Devine qualities.
“the Son of Man came with the clouds of Heaven, and came to the Ancient of Days” = Take note that this is NOT the Second Coming of Christ, for He does not descend towards this earth, but moves “to the Ancient of Days.” In other words, as we will discover in Daniel, Chapter 8, Christ moves from the Holy Place of the Heavenly Sanctuary, to the Most Holy Place. This is also spelled out in Malachi 3:1.
7:13-14: “Son of man. . . the judgment was set. . . given a kingdom” = “Thus was presented to the prophet’s vision the opening of the investigative Judgment. The coming of Christ here described is not His Second Coming to the earth. He comes to the Ancient of days in Heaven to receive dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, which will be given Him at the close of His mediatorial work. It is this coming, and not His Second Advent to the earth, that was foretold in prophecy to take place at the termination of the 2300 days, in 1844 A.D. Attended by a cloud of Heavenly angels, our great High Priest enters the Holy of Holies, and there appears in the presence of God to engage in the last acts of His ministration in behalf of man, -- to perform the work of investigative Judgment, and to make an atonement for all who are shown to be entitled to its benefits.” 4SP:307.2; GC:480.
7:14: “should serve Him” = Here is my Daniel 6:16 & 20 Note: The verb “serve” can also be translated as “worship.” It appears nine times in Daniel, Chapters 3-7 (Dan.
7:17: “four kings” = Babylon, Medio-Persia, Greece, Rome (see Dan. 2:38; 8:20 & 21). The argument is made that the text says “kings,” not “kingdoms.” However, you cannot be a “king” unless you have a “kingdom” to rule over.
7:18: “most High” = This is always assumed as meaning the “Father God.” However, remember that we are dealing with the Aramaic language here. And the Aramaic for “most High” is, “elyon,” which is an Aramaic masculine adjective, meaning, “Most High God.” This we agree upon. However, the term always appears in the plural of majesty, comparable to the Hebrew word “Elohiym.” Furthermore, it always occurs in the construct with “qaddiys,” meaning the holy ones or saints of the Most High God. Also, in the context of Daniel’s interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the four beasts, where four kingdoms were represented, “The Most High” is used 9 times in Daniel 3:26 & 32; 4:14 & 21 & 22 & 29 & 31; 5:18 & 21. By contrast, “The Highest One” is used only 4 times in Daniel, Chapter Seven ONLY (7:18 & 22 & 25 & 27).
Therefore, we must ask, Why is “elyon,” a brand new word for “most High,” or better, ‘The Highest One,” used in this Chapter only? My conclusion would be, that since “The Highest One” term is only used in this Chapter (7), and since it is used ONLY after the vision of Daniel 7:13-14, therefore, “The Highest One” must refer to the Messianic King Who receives “the kingdom for ever,” Daniel 7:18, from “the Ancient of days,” Daniel 7:13. Because “the Ancient of days” would not give it to Someone else, and that Someone else be Himself.
Thus, the interpretation of Who the “most High” is, is affirmed as the Messiah, because it tells us that the saints will receive the Kingdom from “The Highest One,” Aramaic, “elyon,” Who is “one like a Son of Man,” after the beasts are defeated. It’s Jesus!
In a side note, to interpret “the Most High” as being applied to Israel is to say that Israel is to receive “worship.” No, no.
7:19: “fourth beast. . . of iron” = Pagan Rome (see Dan. 2:40; 7:7 & 23).
7:19 & 21 & 23 & 25: “devoured, brake in pieces. . . prevailed. . . shall devour. . . wear out the saints” = This makes it a “persecuting power.”
7:20: “ten horns” = Ten kingdoms = Ostrogoths, Visigoths (uprooted by Islam/Arabs in 711), Franks, Vandals, Suevi, Alamanni, Anglo-Saxons, Heruli (a Germanic people), Lombard’s, Burgundians (see Dan. 2:42; 7:7 & 24).
“the other” = Papal Rome (see Dan. 7:24).
“three fell” = Heruli (Is actually the kingdom of the Gothic general Odoacer, a German mercenary working for the Roman empire, who ruled Italy and Illyricum under the permission of the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno, in 488 A.D.; defeated in 493 A.D. by the Ostrogoths), Vandals (Invaded Rome in 456 A.D., but conquered in 534 A.D. by the Byzantines; this is where we get our word “vandalism” because of the ransacking of Rome); and Ostrogoths (538 A.D. conquer by the Byzantines who took over Rome in 537; however, the Ostrogoths resurfaced in 542, until 553 when the Byzantines finished them off), all being conquered (see Dan. 7:8 & 20).
7:21: “made war with the saints” = A persecuting power.
7:22: “Ancient of days came. . . saints possessed the kingdom” = Christ’s Second Coming (see Dan. 2:34; 44-45; 7:27; 8:25; 12:1 & 7).
“judgment was given to the saints” = During the thousand year period. Confirmed in Luke 22:30; First Corinthians 6:2-3; Revelation 20:4.
7:23: “fourth beast. . . fourth kingdom” = Pagan Rome (see Dan. 2:40; 7:7 & 19).
7:24: “ten horns. . . ten kings” = Here it is in plain text. We are told that the “ten horns” are/equal “ten kings,” or better: “Ten Kingdoms” = Ostrogoths (553 A.D.), Visigoths (uprooted by Islam/Arabs in 711), Franks, Vandals (destroyed by the Byzantines in 534), Suevi, Alamanni, Anglo-Saxons, Heruli (early Germanic people; part of the Huns; better, the kingdom of Odoacer [476-493]), Lombard’s (574), Burgundians (uprooted by the Catholic Franks in 536) (see Dan. 2:42; 7:7 & 20).
Note: This interpretation was accepted by all the Protestant Reformers until the Roman Catholic church infiltrated into all protestant denominations and introduced a futuristic interpretation of these Daniel 7:8-25 Scriptures.
Martin Luther interpreted the “ten horns” as, “Syria, Egypt, Asia (Minor), Greece, (North) Africa, Spain, Gaul, Italy, Germany, England.” Basically, stating these as areas of power as opposed to specific people groups.
Joseph Mede (1643), stating that the “ten horns” came in the year 456 A.D., then identified them as, “The Britons; The Saxons in Britain; The Franks; The Burgundians in France; The Wisigoths in Southern France and parts of Spain; The Sueves and Alans in Gallicia and Portugal; The Vandals in Africe; The Alemanes in Germany; The Ostrogoths whom the Longobards succeeded in Pannonia and afterward in Italy; The Greeks.
Latter, Bishop Thomas Newton (1720), associated the “ten horns” solely with the division of the Western Roman Empire. Instead of the Greek Byzantines, Newton proposed the Huns instead of the Alemanni, suggesting the Heruli and Turingi in Italy.
Josiah Litch (1842) of Seventh-Day Adventist history exactly followed Bishop Newton’s list. Which is: “The Huns in Hungary (356 A.D.); The Ostrogoths in Mysia (377); The Visigoths in Pannonia (356); The Franks in France (407); The Vandals in Africa (407); The Sueves and Alans in Gascoigne and Spain (407); The Burgundians in Burgundy (407); The Heruli and Rugii or Thuringi in Italy (476); The Saxons and Angles in Britain (476)l The Lombards in Germany (483).”
And lastly, Seventh-Day Adventist author Uriah Smith (1885) simplified Newton’s list, in his work, “Thoughts Critical and Practical on the Books of Daniel and Revelation.” Later published in his work, “Daniel and the Revelation,” page 150. “The Huns; The Ostrogoths; The Visigoths; The Franks; The Vandals; The Suevi; The Burgundians; The Heruli; The Anglo-Saxons; The Lombards.”
“another shall arise after them” = This is what will be better known as the “little horn,” Daniel 7:8 and 8:9, equaling Papal Rome. Rome fell in 476 A.D. Papal Rome began to reign in 537 A.D.
“diverse from the first [ten]” = In that Pagan Rome becomes both Pagan and Papal Rome. Having both political and religious power. Complete power in 538 A.D.
“he shall subdue three kings” = Papal Rome “subdue[s]” the nation of the Heruli (Is actually the kingdom of Gothic general Odoacer [476-493], a German mercenary working for the Roman empire, who ruled Italy and Illyricum under the permission of the Eastern Roman Emperor Zeno, in 488 A.D.; defeated in 493 A.D. by the Ostrogoths); Vandals(Invaded Rome in 456 A.D., but conquered in 534 A.D. by the Byzantines; this is where we get our word “vandalism” because of the ransacking of Rome); and Ostrogoths (538 A.D. conquer by the Byzantines who took over Rome in 537; however, the Ostrogoths resurfaced in 542, until 553 when the Byzantines finished them off), all being conquered (see Dan. 7:8 & 20).
Note: Papal Rome only became a “horn,” meaning, it was only a spiritual leader, not yet a “kingdom,” until 538 A.D. Given power over Rome by the Byzantines, granted political control over Italy by Justinian. Therefore, based upon the latest and best information available today, the only kingdoms that existed after 538 A.D., after Rome received its power both politically and religiously, are: “Britons; Anglo-Saxons; Franks; Burgundians; Suevi; Ostrogoths; Lombards; Visigoths; Vandals; Byzantium.”
Thus, the “three” “uprooted” (Dan. 7:8) would be: “The Ostrogoths (defeated by the Catholics, supported by the Byzantines in 552/553 A.D.); The Lombards (Conquered by the Catholic Franks in 774); The Britons, who were gradually subdued by the Anglo-Saxons who converted to Roman Catholicism between the 7th-9th centuries.
7:25: “And he shall speak great words against the most High” = It has “a mouth speaking great things,” in Daniel 7:8. Revelation 13:5 in identifying this power states it thus, “speaking great things and blasphemies.” Thus, a persecuting power.
“wear out the saints” = The Byzantine power pushes the Papacy to enforce Justinian Laws. Now that Papal Rome has been established in 538 A.D. as a “kingdom,” it begins its process of persecuting anyone who disagrees with its doctrines and decrees. With “horn” indicating a “political power.”
“Think to change Times and Laws” = This is none other than the changing of the Biblical Sabbath to Sunday, in which in order to do this, the Roman Catholic church dropped the Second Commandment, then split the Tenth in order to keep the numbering of Ten. This can be the only explanation, for it is the only plausible account of what is consisted in God’s Law of Ten Commandments. In other words, the Sabbath Commandment is the only one of the Commandments in which it both encompasses “Time” and being One of the “Laws” of God.
The Aramaic word “z’man,” the word translated as “Times,” is used to designate “a fixed time” (Dan. 7:12 & 22); an extension of time to accomplish something (Dan. 2:16); a moment (Dan. 3:8); simultaneity of an action (i.e., “at the same time” Dan. 4:33; Ezra 5:3); or “as soon as” (Dan. 3:7); and “time” in general (Dan. 6:10 & 14; Neh. 9:28). Daniel consistently employed “z’man” (“times”) to designate “time” in general (e.g. Dan. 2:16 & 21; 3:7 & 8; 6:10 & 13).
In Daniel, Chapter Seven, the first time it appears is in verse 12: “were allowed to live for a period of time.” This concept is reinforced in verse 22: “and the time [“z’man”] came when they possessed the kingdom.” The noun “z’man” refers to the moment when specific aspects of God’s plan occur. That usage of the term helps us to understand Daniel’s use of it in Daniel 7:25: “set Times [“zeman”] and the Laws [Aramaic: “d_th,” meaning “Law,” singular].
The “Atamaic,” “d_th” emphasizes the royal nature of God’s Law. This power attempts to gain control over that which is under God’s exclusive control, namely the Law of God, and of His plan within “time.” And that plan is God helping us to understand that the “little horn’s” attack is upon God’s (Commandments) Holy Sabbath day, because the only Commandment that deals with “time” is the Sabbath Commandment.
“I saw that the Sabbath was not nailed to the cross. If it was, the other Nine Commandments were; and we are at liberty to go forth and break them all, as well as to break the fourth. I saw that God had not changed the Sabbath, for He never changes. But the Pope had changed it from the seventh to the first day of the week; for he was to change Times and Laws.” WLF:18.
“a time, and times, and a dividing of time” = 1+2+1/2 = 3 1/2 years = 42 months = 1260 days = 1260 years = 538 A.D. to 1798 A.D. See Daniel 12:7; Revelation 11:2 & 3; 12:6 & 14; 13:5.
The Aramaic word “ ‘iddan,” which is translated “time” and “times,” undoubtedly means “a year” or “years,” when comparing to Daniel 4:16 & 23 & 25 & 32 (see also 12:7), in which Nebuchadnezzar was humbled for (the “LXX”rendering of) “seven years.” This word “ ‘Iddan” is translated as a plural, i.e., “times,’ when it follows itself, as in this verse, or as in Daniel, Chapter Four, when more than one “time,” i.e., “seven,” is indicated. Scholars generally agree to this reasoning and therefore consider the second “times” as a dual, thus denoting “two times” as it is rendered in the “RSV.”
The Aramaic word “pelag,” translated “dividing,” also means “half,” as it is also rendered in the RSV. Its counterpart is also rendered thus as well in Revelation 12:14.
An interesting thought is this statement, as found in, “The Presence of the Three and a Fraction: A Literary Figure in the Book of Daniel,” in David Merling, ed., “To Understand the Scriptures: Essays in Honor of William H. Shea,” 1997, p. 201,” by Ddravko Stefanovic: “This expression is defined from the literary point of view as an example of the broken numerical sequence (or progression). That is to say that the career of the horn is expressed by the progressive order of one, two [or twice as brutal], and a natural continuation to reach the climax would normally be three times. Yet, just before the progression reaches its zenith in number three, the power of the horn is broken into ‘a division’ or ‘a fraction’ (understood as a half) of the time unit. . . Thus it becomes evident that the defeat of the horn comes suddenly and unexpectedly.”
“[279]The prophet Daniel declared that the Roman church, symbolized by the little horn, was to think to change Times and Laws. . . [280] The change in the Fourth Commandment exactly fulfills the prophecy.” 4SP:279-280.
As stated in my Introduction: “Since 1798 the book of Daniel has been unsealed, knowledge of the prophecies has increased, and many have proclaimed the solemn message of the judgment near.” GC:356.
7:26: “judgement shall sit” = The “Investigative Judgment” (see Dan. 7:9-10 and my Bible Study upon said subject, i.e. “THE INVESTIGATIVE JUDGMENT”).
7:27: “everlasting kingdom” = Second Coming (see Dan. 2:34 & 44-45; 7:22; 8:25; 12:1 & 7).

CHAPTER EIGHT
8:ALL: Something to notice is how the animals of Daniel, Chapter 7, i.e., “Lion, Bear, Leopard, then Beast,” are wild animals -- or better, unclean animals -- as opposed to the animals of Daniel, Chapter 8, i.e., “Ram” and “Goat,” which are domestic -- or better, clean animals -- of a sacrificial nature, or better, Sanctuary material, which is the stress of Daniel, Chapter 8. Rams and goats were used as sacrificial offerings in the Sanctuary service. But only on the “Day of Atonement” are the two mentioned together. Hence, these two animals are intentionally chosen here to evoke the Day of Atonement, which is a major focus of the vision.
8:1: “third year” = According to “Ptolemy’s Canon,” Belshazzar reigned seventeen years; and so says Josephus, in his work, “Antiqu.” l. 10. c. 11. sect. 4. So, at this point Belshazzar would reign another 14 years before the fall of Babylon.
8:3: “ram. . . two horns” = Media-Persia (see Dan. 2:39; 7:5; 8:20).
“one [horn] was higher than the other” = The Persians become stronger than the Medes.
“the higher came up last” = Persia rules alone instead of jointly as at first.
8:4: “westward, and northward, and southward” = Babylon, Lydia, and Egypt conquered by Persia (see Dan. 7:5).
8:5: “he goat” = Greece (see Dan. 8:21).
“touched not the ground” = This shows the swiftness with which Greece conquered the then known world. This is the winged leopard of Daniel 7:6.
“notable horn” = Alexander the Great.
8:7: “brake his two horns: and there was no power in the ram [Persia] to stand before him [Greece]” = Greece conquers Persia.
“none that could deliver the ram [Persia]” = No other world power could challenge Greece.
8:8: “he goat” = Greece (see Dan. 8:21).
“four notable ones” = Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus, Ptolemy (see Dan. 7:6; 8:22; 11:4).
“Nadab and Abihu were men in holy office; but by the use of wine their minds became so clouded that they could not distinguish between sacred and common things. By the offering of ‘strange fire’ they disregarded God’s Command, and were slain by His judgments. [29] Alexander found it much easier to subdue kingdoms than to rule his own spirit. After conquering nations, this so-called great man fell through the indulgence of appetite, -- a victim of intemperance.
“Notwithstanding thousands of years of experience and progress, the same dark blot which stained the first pages of history remains to disfigure our modern civilization. Drunkenness, with all its woes, is found everywhere we go. In spite of the noble efforts of temperance workers, the evil has gained ground.” CTBH:28-29. = Alexander the Great dies from Drunkenness and his kingdom is split up between his four generals.
8:9: “out of one of them” = Ptolemy. For those who believe this to be Antiochus Epiphanes, See my Bible Study: “ANTIOCHUS IV EPIPHANES.”
The “them” in English has no gender. By contrast, “them” in Hebrew has gender as in “wind,” but not as in “horn.” Examples of “wind” with gender would be as in the four directions in which it goes (Dan. 8:8; 11:4) and as in the strife it creates (Dan. 7:2).
“little horn” = Out of Ptolemy came Pagan Rome, because Rome conquered “toward the south [Egypt], and toward the east [Syria],” in order to become the new world power. Note that according to Daniel 8:8, Ptolemy “waxed very great,” while according to Daniel 8:9, this “little horn” “waxed exceeding great.”
After depicting the four horns spreading towards the four winds of heaven, the Biblical text then states that from one of them arose a “little horn.” The question then comes as to whether this horn/power comes from one of the “four horns,” which represent the four generals of Alexander. or from one of the “four winds.” The grammatical structure of the text in the original language indicates that this “horn” comes from one of the four winds of heaven. And since this power arises after the Grecian Empire and its four offshoots (generals), a common understanding is that this horn is Rome, first pagan and then Papal.
“pleasant land” = Israel (see Dan. 11:16). The mention of “and toward the pleasant land [Judea],” is only because this is where God’s people were at the time (and He always cares enough to mention or acknowledge them), not because they were considered a world power -- they weren’t.
A clue is given that these are indeed a succession of world empires, in that the “ram” (Media-Persia) only “becomes great,” verse 4, while the “goat” (Greece) “waxed [or became] very great,” verse 8, or better, overpowered the great one. We then continue on to the “little horn” (Rome), which “waxed [became] exceeding great,” verse 9. In other words, the next world kingdom concurred the former one[s].
8:10: “them” = The “them” would be the worshippers of Christ. Here is my Revelation 12:4 Note: “third part of the stars of Heaven” = See Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:16-17; Luke 10:18; Second Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6.
The redeemed are to take the place of the once loyal angels who fell from Heaven.
8:10-11: “it” = Papal Rome because “it,” verse 10, shifts from a military/political power, to a religious power; “even to the host of Heaven,” verse 10, “even to the Prince [meaning Christ] of the host,” verse 11. Previous to this “it[s]” conquests were only directed on earthly campaigns (verse 9), while here, “it” shifts “it[s]” efforts towards Heavenly powers. Thus, two phases of the same power are clearly identified in Scripture, that of Pagan Rome, and then shifting to Papal Rome, which will help us to later clearly identify the “little horn” power as Papal Rome.
Since the “little horn” becomes the major focus in the vision, its vertical expansion receives detailed attention. In this regard, this “little horn” corresponds closely to the “little horn” of Daniel, Chapter 7, meaning Daniel, Chapter 8 is just more descriptive and focused upon the same “little horn,” as the following comparison shows:
(1) Both horns are little in the beginning (Dan. 7:8; 8:9).
(2) Both become great later on (Dan. 7:20; 8:9).
(3) Both are persecuting powers (Dan. 7:21 & 25; 8:10 & 24).
(4) Both are self-exalting and blasphemous (Dan. 7:8 & 20 & 25; 8:10 & 11 & 25).
(5) Both target God’s people (Dan. 7:25; 8:24).
(6) Both are delineated by prophetic time (Dan. 7:25; 8:13-14).
(7) Both extend until the time of the end (Dan. 7:25 & 26; 8:17 & 19).
(8) Both face supernatural destruction (Dan. 7:11 & 26; 8:25).
Therefore, because the “little horn” of Daniel, Chapter 7, represents the Papacy, the vertical expansion of the “little horn” in Daniel, Chapter 8, must represent the same power. Thus, as in Daniel, Chapters 2 and 7, the final main power, or fourth kingdom, is Rome, while in Daniel, Chapters 7 & 8, we have both “Pagan,” and finally, “Papal Rome.”
“host of Heaven” = The terms “host” and “stars” can designate God’s people in the Old Testament. Israel is designated the “armies [host]” of the Lord in Exodus 12:4. See also for “host” Genesis 32:2; Deuteronomy 2:14; 23:9. For “stars” see Genesis 22:17; 26:4; 37:9; Exodus 32:13; Deuteronomy 1:10; 10:22; 28:62; Daniel 12:3.
However, since Lucifer (his name in Heaven) took 1/3 of the angles with him (Rev. 12:4), it also refers to him performing that act. In other words, the text is open to both interpretations, and in reality, both apply.
8:11: “him” = The “him” is not “the prince of the host,” which is Jesus, because Jesus is not the one that “magnified himself.” Thus, the “he” in this verse is, “he [Papal Rome that] magnified himself [Papal Rome].”
“Prince of the host” = Jesus, elsewhere mentioned in Daniel 9:25 as “Messiah the Prince.” It is important to note here that for the first time we are given clear evidence that this “him,” which equals Papal Rome, or better, the religious system it represents, attempts to supersede the “priestly” role of Jesus.
Daniel 8:11; 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14; Luke 21:20; Revelation 13:14: “daily sacrifice was taken away. . . Sanctuary was cast down” = For “daily,” see my Daniel 8:12 Note. For “Sanctuary was cast down,” see below.
This prophecy has a triple meaning; i.e., it equals: 70 A.D., Jerusalem and the Temple destroyed; 508 A.D. Pagan Rome taken over by Papal Rome (but not in full power until 538 A.D.); Sunday Law (explained in my Bible Study: “WORLD HISTORY”).
“taken away” = The Hebrew word for “taken away” is “room,” which literally means “lifted up.” “Room” is a primitive root, meaning: “to be high actively to rise or raise (in various applications, literally or figuratively): - bring up, exalt (self), extol, give, go up, haughty, heave (up), (be, lift up on, make on, set up on, too) high (-er, one), hold up, levy, lift (-er) up, (be) lofty, (X a-) loud, mount up, offer (up), + presumptuously, (be) promote (-ion), proud, set up, tall (-er), take (away, off, up).” It occurs 193 times in the “KJV,” and is always translated as one of the above, except here.
In Daniel 11:12 it is translated as “lifted,” and in Daniel 11:36 it is translated as “exalt.” Context appears to be of more value here for the translators to have used “taken away,” which stays in context with “cast down,” the Hebrew being, “shalak,” which occurs 125 times in the “KJV.” It is translated as “cast him down” in Daniel 8:7, and “cast down” again in Daniel 8:12. It is a primitive root meaning: “to throw out, down or away (literally or figuratively): -- adventure, cast (away, down, forth, off, out), hurl, pluck, throw.”
Thus, the meaning would be that the Jewish system of “daily sacrifice[s]” was stopped by this persecuting power, i.e., Rome, in destroying Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
“Sanctuary was cast down” = This is “blaspheming” of God’s Law; of which the Sanctuary contains (see Rev. 13:6).
“[26] When the idolatrous standards of the Romans should be set up in the holy ground. . . [27] then the followers of Christ were to find safety in flight.” 4SP:26-27.
Here is my Matthew 24:15 Note: “Abomination of desolation” = Luke 21:20 = Jerusalem compassed with armies. See also: Daniel 8:11; 9:27; 11:31; 12:11; Mark 13:14; Revelation 13:14. See my Bible Study: “ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION, THE [UNDER SDA].” Which equals passing of the “Sunday Law.”
Explanation: How did the “little horn” take away the “daily sacrifice” and “cast down” the place of Christ’s Sanctuary? By placing the intercession for humans into the hands of the priests through the confessional and by sacrificing Christ anew in every Mass, the Papacy has removed Christ’s Heavenly ministry from the thinking of humanity. This is Satan’s counterfeit.
Even Roman Catholics admit this: “The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist [Mass] are one single sacrifice. . . In this Divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ Who offered Himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and is offered in an unbloody manner.” “Catechism of the Catholic church,” (New York: Doubleday, 1994), number 1367, page 381.
However, we know that where there is “no blood,” there is no real “sacrifice.” The earthly Sanctuary system represented Christ’s intercessory ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary (Heb. 8:2; 9:24). Therefore, as the prophecy predicts, the Papacy exchanges the intercession of Christ for the intercession of earthly priests. By means of such counterfeit worship, the “little horn” takes away Christ’s intercessory ministry and symbolically casts down the place of Christ’s Sanctuary.
8:12: “an host was given” = The Hebrew can mean “an army” or “a large workforce.” This “host” is “against” the “regular/daily” worship of God by attempting to take its place. This can be none other than an earthly priesthood; as opposed to the true worshipers of God who only acknowledge Jesus as their High Priest. Does the Roman Catholic power claim to forgive sins with their “workforce” of priests behind the confessional booth? Not even were the sons of Aaron given this power; God does the forgiving (Lev. 4:20 & 26 & 31 & 35; Mark 2:7).
“the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression” = The literal Hebrew reads “Hat-tah-med be pashag,” which means, “The continual in Transgression.”
Because the word “sacrifice” is a supplied word and not in the original text, one should not make a doctrine from it. To assume this is referring to Christ is to misconstrue the true meaning of the text and to take it “out-of-context.” Look again and see “specifically” where Christ/Messiah is mentioned; i.e., nowhere.
“I saw in relation to the ‘daily,’ that the word ‘sacrifice’ was supplied by man’s wisdom, and does not belong to the text, and that the Lord gave the correct view of it to those who gave the judgment hour cry.” RH, November 1, 1850; EW:74-75.
“. . . her [Ellen Whites] silence as to the taking away of the ‘daily’ and the casting down of the Sanctuary. . . [is evidence] that she received no explanation as to the other parts of the prophecy.” LEY:257.
“daily” = The Hebrew word for “daily” is “H4538; tamid,” and occurs 103 times in the Old Testament. It is used both adverbially and adjectivally. It literally means “continually” or “continual” [“the daily” = “continual,” see EW:74-75.], and is applied to various concepts, such as continual employment (Eze. 39:14), permanent sustenance (2Sa. 9:7-13), continual sorrow (Psa. 38:17), continual hope (Psa. 71:14), continual provocation (Isa. 65:3), etcetera.
It is used frequently in connection with the ritual of the Sanctuary to describe various features of Its regular services, but ONLY in regards to the priests “daily duties.” Examples are: the “continual bread” that was to be kept upon the table of shewbread (Num. 4:7); the “lamp’ that was to burn continually (Exo. 27:20); the ‘fire” that was to be kept burning upon the altar (Lev. 6:13); the “burnt offerings” that were to be offered daily (Num. 28:3 & 6); the “incense” that was to be offered morning and evening (Exo. 30:7-8); and the “daily/continual” sacrifice (Exo. 29:38-42).
Here is the Key: The word itself does not mean “daily,” but simply “continual” or “regular.” Of the 103 occurrences it is translated “daily” only in Numbers 4:16 and in the five incidences of it in Daniel (8:11 & 12 & 13; 11:31; 12:11).
The idea of “daily” was evidently derived not from the word itself, but from that with which it was associated; i.e., the Sanctuary. However, it is the services that go on “continually” in the Sanctuary; and in that sense “daily” is meant, and not a “sacrifice,” which is here meant. In other words, it is not Christ Who is sacrificed every day, i.e., “daily,” but the services of the Sanctuary that are performed on a “daily” basis which are going to be interrupted.
Since “tamid” has the definite article “the” preceding it, it is therefore used adjectivally. Therefore, “tamid” is describing the fact that the “little horn [Papal Rome]” power (“him” in verses 11 & 12), was directing “it[s]” efforts against the Sanctuary services. The verb “was given,” Aramaic “nathan,” often means, “to set someone over” (see Dan. 11:21). Hence, the text directs us to the fact that “it” (Papal Rome), “set over,” or appointed “it[s]” own “host” over “the daily” ministrations. In other words, the Roman Catholic church asserted itself over God’s established Church in order to take the place of God.
In Daniel 11:31, this is called “The Abomination of Desolation,” i.e., setting itself up as God on earth. And the “it” will make desolate His Law and all who would obey God’s Law.
“I turned to look at the company who were still bowed before the throne; they did not know that Jesus had left it. Satan appeared to be by the throne, trying to carry on the work of God. I saw them look up to the throne, and pray, ‘Father, give us Thy Spirit.’ Satan would then breathe upon them an unholy influence; in it there was light and much power, but no sweet love, joy, and peace. Satan’s object was to keep them deceived and to draw back and deceive God’s children. I saw one after another leave the company who were praying to Jesus in the Holiest [meaning, Most Holy Place], go and join those before the throne [meaning, in the Holy Place that Christ had evacuated] and they at once received the unholy influence of Satan.” DS, March 14, 1846; Broadside 1, April 6, 1846; EW:56; ExV:43 [SDA’s NOTE: Last sentence left out of EW and ExV].
“Cast down the truth to the ground” = Jesus declares Himself to be the “truth,” John 14:6, and also points to the Word of God as “truth,” John 17:17. By contrast, the Papacy prohibited the translation of the Bible into the language of the people, put the interpretation of the Bible under the authority of their church, and placed tradition alongside the Bible, in theory, but, in practice, tradition is placed above the Bible as the supreme rule of faith.
8:13: “one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that Certain Saint” = There are many texts that tell us that “saints” are humans (Psa. 16:3; Mat. 27:52; Rom. 1:7; 8:27; Php. 1:1; Heb. 6:10; Rev. 18:24). With that said, that we know of Biblically, only Moses, Enoch, Elijah, and those raised at Christ’s resurrection who could fulfill this roll. Because the ones at Christ’s resurrection are not alive yet.
However, the Hebrew word used here for “saint” is, “H6914; qadosh,” which should be translated as, “Holy one;” or “holy,” as it is majorly translated elsewhere. See Exodus 19:6; 29:31; Leviticus 6:16 & 26 & 27; 7:6; 10:13; 11:44 (twice) & 45 (twice); 16:24; 19:2 (twice); 20:7 & 26 (twice); 21:6 & 7 & 8 (twice) & 9; Numbers 5:17; 6:5 & 8; 15:40; 16:3 & 5 & 7; Deuteronomy 7:6; 14:2 & 21; 23:14; 26:19; 28:9; Joshua 24:19; First Samuel 2:2; 6:20; Second Kings 4:9; 19:22; Second Chronicles 35:3; Nehemiah 8:9 & 10 &11; Job 6:10; Psalm 22:3; 46:4; 65:4; 71:22; 78:41; 89:18; 99:3 & 5 & 9; 111:9; Proverbs 9:10; 30:3; Ecclesiastes 8:10; Isaiah 1:4; 4:3; 5:16 & 19 & 24; 6:3 (three times); 10:17 & 20; 12:6; 17:7; 29:19 & 23; 30:11 & 12; 30:15; 31:1; 37:23; 40:25; 41:14 & 16 & 20; 43:3 & 14 & 15; 45:11; 47:4; 48:17; 49:7 (twice); 54:5; 55:5; 57:15 (twice); 58:13; 60:9 & 14; Jeremiah 50:29; 51:5; Ezekiel 39:7; 42:13; Daniel 8:24; Hosea 11:9; Habakkuk 1:12; 3:3.
By contrast, it is translated as “saints,” plural, in Deuteronomy 33:3; Job 5:1; 15:15; Psalm 16:3; 34:9; 89:5 & 7; Hosea 11:12; Zechariah 14:5.
It is translated as “saint,” singular, in Psalm 106:16; (and here in Daniel 8:13, twice).
My conclusion is, since it is also translated as “holy” in the same Book (Daniel 8:24), then it should have more weight in its translation using the same author here (Daniel 8:13). Thus, “saint” should be translated where it appears twice in this verse as “holy one.” “Then I heard one Holy One speaking, and another holy one said. . .”
With this breakdown, “that Certain” would equal Christ. For only Christ knows the future. The Hebrew for “that Certain” is, “H6422; palmoniy,” meaning, “The Wonderful Numberer.” The other “saint/holy one” asking Christ is most likely the angel Gabrial. Compare with Zechariah 1:12.
Here is “Young’s Literal Translation” of this verse: “And I hear a certain holy one speaking, and a certain holy one saith to the wonderful Numberer Who is speaking.”
“daily sacrifice” = The fact that “sacrifice” is a supplied word does not detract from the truth that that is the subject of the text. That the “sacrifices” took place on a daily basis, see Exodus 29:38-39. One in the Morning and one in the Evening. One at the break of the day and one just before sunset. This is not speaking of a 24-hour period. Whereas, verse 14 is. Verse 14 answers in relation to the “vision.” One is spiritual, verse 14; one is physical (Exo. 29:39). When we get to Daniel 8:26, Gabriel is explaining the “evening and morning” vision of Daniel 8:14, not the “daily” of verse 13. Verse 13 back tracts. Whereas Daniel 8:14 is speaking of the future. We can know this because Gabriel tells Daniel in verse 19, “for at the time of the end shall be the vision.”
“transgression of desolation” = The Hebrew word for “transgression” is, “H6588; pesha,” which is better related to “rebellion,” as in Job 34:37. However, “transgression” is very appropriate. The Hebrew word for “desolation” is, “H8074; shamem,” meaning, “to desolate; be appalled.” Thus, it could be thought of the “little horn” doing “appalling” acts that cause “desolation.”
“Sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot” = How can the Heavenly “Sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot?” The same manner in which Christ is “crucified afresh” in Hebrews 6:6, and “trodden under foot the Son of God,” in Hebrews 10:29. The “host” would be the worshippers. Also, the entire Sanctuary service eludes of Christ’s mediatorial position of which Papal Rome has obscured this Sanctuary truth, through claiming to be able to absolve a subject of his sins.

8:14: “two thousand and three hundred days” = 2300 years = B.C. 457 -- 1844 A.D. See Daniel 9:25, which explains how the B.C. 457 date is the starting point for the “2300 Days Prophecy.” See my 2300 Days Chart via E-Mail.
According to EW:63.2, “But such subjects as the Sanctuary, in connection with the 2300 days, the Commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, are perfectly calculated to explain the past Advent movement and show what our present position is, establish the faith of the doubting, and give certainty to the future. These, I have frequently seen, were the principal subjects on which the messenger should dwell,”
According to verse 17, this “vision” is “for at the time of the end” Thie “vision” is also correlated with verse 26, telling us that the “vision. . . is true” and it is comprised with “evening and the morning.” This is important in that it corresponds with the Genesis, Chapter One account, letting us know that this is speaking of not just “days,” but “many days,” verse 26, which in prophecy equals “years.”
By contrast, to calculate the visions “evenings and mornings” as referring to evening and morning sacrifices, thus equaling 1,150 days, does not work out to any historical event. Let alone, that “evening and morning” has always meant a full day (Gen. Chp. One) should be clear.
Plus, the “2300 days” prophecy cannot be literal “days,” which would be a little over 6 years, and the kingdoms mentioned in verses 20 and 21 lasted a lot longer than that. Also, to attempt to correlated “evening and the morning” to sacrifices, which are not mentioned in the text, does not make sense when a time prophecy is given. Plus, when speaking of sacrifices, the Scriptures state “morning and evening,” not the other way around. See First Chronicles 16:40; Second Chronicles 2:4; 31:3; Ezra 3:3.
It must be understood that Daniel 8:14 is answering the question of verse 13, i.e., “How long the vision?” And that question comprises four things: “the daily sacrifice;” “the transgression of desolation;” “the Sanctuary;” “the host,” to be trodden under foot.
For a day equaling a year in Biblical principle (Day = Year), see Numbers 14:34; First Samuel 20:6; First Kings 1:1; Psalm 90:10; Ezekiel 4:5-6; Revelation 11:9; where “years” is translated as “days.” Also see Genesis 6:3; PK:698; DA:233.
There are three views concerning this prophecy:
1) Preterist. Preterist eschatology is the theological view that Biblical end-times prophecies, including those in Revelation and the Olivet Discourse and here, were fulfilled in the past. Which leads to the false assumption that Antiochus Epiphanies is the fulfillment of this prophecy.
2) Futuristic. The futuristic view of eschatology holds that most Biblical prophecies, particularly the majority of Revelation (Chapters 4–22) and Daniel 8:14 and Chapter 9, describe literal, catastrophic events that will occur at the end of history.
3) Day For A Year; or the Historicism Approach. The view that when speaking of prophetic time periods, a day in prophecy equals a year and that history confirms the timing given.
4) The Idealist View. Is the view that all of these prophecies are just speaking in very general, abstract terms, and none of these events are speaking historically and have just a basic time and place reference (to nothing). This view does not work, since as example Daniel 8:20 specifically identifies the animals as being “Media and Persia,” with Daniel 8:21 equals “Greece.” This is why I reject this view as possibly being even relevant.
That the third view is correct can be easily seen by having the prophetic time periods line up with the First Coming of our Lord. Thus, the 2300 days of prophetic time, which is the full extent of the prophecy should not be ignored as extending to 1844. Each Chapter of Daniel (2 & 7 & 8 & 9 &11) explains the other Chapter and is a succession of prophetic events with more information added to the other.
If you take the Preterist view, the 2300 days would equal six and one-third years. Meaning, nothing in history matches and the 490-day prophecy in Chapter 9, which is part of the 2300 days prophecy, and the entire prophecy (490-year prophecy) goes by the wayside. Plus, none of the monarchs that these believers site lasted less than six and a third years. Thus, this prophecy cannot be referring to literal days; for the historical account of the following kingdoms covers many centuries and well exceeds any time period they come up with as referring to literal days.
The Futuristic view refuses to even look for something in prophetic time, as they will be looking for the Coming of Christ with whatever event is mentioned does not matter; since they will not need to figure out what it is referring to since Christ has already Come.
Not that it matters, but for the CRITICS, who will not do this kind of research, regarding the 2300 day for a year principle established way before modern theologians, this Biblical principle was known for centuries. As many as SEVENTY-SIX people are listed before William Miller came on the scene. I have listed below some whom I have found quotes for. In a side note, throughout Jewish history we have many early Jewish scholars who interpreted the 2300 days as years. Nahawendi, Saadia, Jeroham, Hakohen, Jephet Ibn Ali, and Rashi. Plus, for those CRITICS that insist the Miller claimed himself to be a prophet, from the book, “Sketches of the Christian Life and Public Labors of William Miller,” we read, “I am not a prophet. I am not sent to prophesy, but to read, believe, and publish what God has inspired the ancient prophets to administer to us, in the prophecies of the Old and New Testaments.”
Here is a quote from Origen (185-253), in the book titled, “Origen,” by “Paulist Press,” quoting, “Also, the weeks of years up to the time of Christ the leader that Daniel the prophet predicted were fulfilled (Dan. 9:24).”
Also, Eusebius Of Caesarea (260-339), in the book, “The Book of Eusebius #3,” paragraph 156-157, “[156] Now the whole period of our Saviour’s Teaching and working of Miracles is said to have been three-and-a-half years, which is half a week. . . [157] One week of yeas therefore would be represented by the whole period of His association with the Apostles.”
The Jewish scholar Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, best known as “Rashi,” (1040 to 1105), using the 2300 day-year principle writes, “Let us return to the earlier matters, how the computation of “evening and morning, two thousand and three hundred,’ fits exactly with the time commencing from the descent to Egypt to terminate at the end of 1,290 years until the day that the daily sacrifice was abolished.” Labeled EDR.94, in the Vatican Library.
Arnald Of Villanova (Arnaldus De Villa Nova), (1240-1311), wrote, “When he says ‘two thousand three hundred days’ it must be said that by days he understands years. This is clear through the explanation of the angel when he says that in the end the vision will be fulfilled, from which he gives it to be understood by clear expression that in that vision by days are understood years.” Vatican Library 3824, Follo 7v & 8r.
Even a Catholic Bishop, Nicholas Cusa (1400-1464), understood the significance, coming to the date of “before 1750,” which can only be done using the day/year principle, when he wrote, “This is 2300 days from the hour of the word’s going forth. Whence, in the third year of King Balthasar, this revelation was first made to him in the year of King Cyrus/ CHRIST according to Jerome/ Africanus/ and Josephus about the 559th year has passed: Then the resurrection of the church according to the aforementioned number/ on the first day of the year/ according to the revelation made by Ezekiel/ after the year of CHRIST 1700/& before 1750.” Nicholas Cusa, BSB-Hss Clm 18239, Folio 221R.
Note: Other copies of this manuscript have the “559” date as “459,” which actually would fit better with the prophecy; which in better calculations is B.C. 457.
Others such as John Tillinghast, and English Clergyman (1604-1655), in his work, “Knowledge of the Times, or, The Resolution of the Question, how long it shall be unto the end of Wonders,” page 117 & 152-153, “In the judgement (faith he) of a learned Author, the two thou (and three hundred days are unapplicable to Antiochus Epiphanes. . . [152] enter upon Daniels seventy weeks, Chap. 9.24,25,26,27. This seventy weeks is a lesser Epoch comprehended within the greater of two thousand and [153] three hundred years, consisting of four hundred and ninety days; for seventy weeks being reduced into days, amount to the aforesaid number, which according to the Prophetical way of speaking is so many years, vix. four hundred and ninety years.”
Johann Petri (1497-1550), a German theologian, in his work, “Explaining the 3 Stories of Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar’s Dream According to the Prophet,” paragraph 4, he writes, “The angel Gabriel showed the thirtieth year of Christ or the 483rd year of the 70 weeks and therefore the 453rd year as the birth of Christ, so that was the correct explanation of the sealed vision of the 2300 days. 453 yeas of the 2300 had passed at the birth of Christ and the remainder of this number continues from that date to A.D. 1847, as 1847 plus 453 makes 2300.”
Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727), in manuscript 7.3OR, states, “Therefore the 2300 years not end before the years 2132 nor after 2370.” Although his calculations are wrong, they clearly show the usage of the 2300 day/year principle.
William Sherwin (1676), in his work, “Saints First Revealed And Covenanted Mercies Shortly Approaching,” he states, “those said Gentile Kingdoms reach through the 2300 years of their continuance.”
Philip Burton (1790), in his work, “Seven Prophetical Periods, or, A View Of The Different Prophetical Periods,” wrote, “Daniel’s 2300 days, without doubt, are to be taken agreeably to the stile of Daniel in other places, not for natural, but for prophetical days or years.”
William Whiston (December 9, 1667 -- August 22, 1752), in his work, “Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Mr. William Whiston,” he writes, “And if the author expected the restoration of the Jews fifteen years too soon, it was by following our present copies of Daniel, in the date of the famous 2300 days and years, viii. I, 14. Which I had discovered twenty-five years ago to be a gross mistake, I mean, of the 3rd of Belshazzar, instead of the first of Darius the Mede.”
Beverley (1684), in his work, “A Scripture-Line Of Time,” he writes, “But this is not All: There are fourty Days for fourty Years, 290 and 40 Days for so many years; Seventy Weeks for 490 years; 1260 Days for so many years, and Months proportionable: But 2300 Ev. Mor, taken for so many years, is very august [impressive], and speaks a Divine Zeal to grasp that great End of putting down all Rule, and Authority, and Power, and Christ taking His Power to Himself, and Reigning.”
Keach (1689), in his work, “Antichrist Stormed,” writes, “Gods worship there, therefore not properly rendered Sacrifices, as Dan. 9. 27. But by way of Supplement; so I shall rather offer my thoughts of them under that of the Witnesses Prophesying, only all mustard do fall in within the time of this great number of 2300 years, and from what hath been spoken to it, we may guess how long it will be before it will expire.”
Clark (1694), in his work, “Sederolam: Or, The Diser of Ages,” he writes, “. . .compare this Prophecy with that of Daniel, concerning 2300 years, and thou shalt plainly perceive that both extend unto the Sabbatick Millenium.
“94. But because those 1335 Days (Dan. 12, I2.) contain 1335 years, to wit, the whole time of the Apostacy after the Apostles, to the beginning of the Millenium; therefore from 2300 years; 1335 years are deducted, and the remainder 965, contains the time from the beginning of the Babylonian Captivity.”
Drue Cressener (1699), in his work, “The Mysteries of God Fulfilled,” writes, “I conceive this Number of 2300 we headed, or doth take its beginning from the Year God translated the Babylonian Monarchy to the Medes and Persians, which was the third and last of Belshazzar’s Reign, who was also the last of the Babylonian Kings. . . Dan.8. in the Description of the three that were to reign the 2300 Years yet to come.”
Joseph Jacob (1705), in his work, “ Desolations Decyphered And The Kingdom of Christ Discovered, “ writes, “He shall have a third overturn, which will do his Business (as we say) forth five Year after the last blow, or 1335 Years after his Usurpations over the Church of Christ, which will be given in the Laodicean of 7th Church-Starte, and will be the 3d. or Consuming Woe; and now will be Finish or Compleated [correct spelling in those days] that Great round number of 2300 Years, which Daniel heard in his days, to be the Time Limited for Antichrist’s Dominion.”
Marwick (1728), in his work, “Stricture Lucis: To The Jews, God’s Ancient and Beloved People,” he writes, “According to this Computation then, if we shall reckon the Beginning of the 2300 Years from A. D. 133, the Desolations of Jewry, and the Time for scattering and bringing to nothing the Power of the Holy People, will end in A.D. 2433, or rather in A.D. 2400. because the 2300 Prophetical Years being each year.”
Bishop Patrick, in his work, “A Commentary Upon The Larger And Lesser Prophets,” as quoted by William Lowth, states, “It is the Opinion of some learned Men, that these two thousand three Hundred Days are a Line of Time that is to be extended to the End of the Times of Antichrist: taking each Day for a Year, according to the Genius of the Prophetical Writings.”
Benjamin Holloway (1753), in his work, “Letter And Spirit, or Annotations Upon The Holy Scriptures According To Both,” he writes, “Daniel, fore-telling, in the clearest and most distinct Manner, the Profanation of the Temple at Jerusalem by Antiochus Epiphanes, which was 170 Years before the Christian Era (putting Days for Years) informs us, it was to be 2300 Years, from the Time of the said Profanation, to the Consummation of all Things. Ch. 8. vs. I3.”
Presbyter (1753), in his work, “An Explanation Of Some Prophecies Contained in the Book of Daniel,” he writes, “All Christians, I suppose, will readily grant this: For, as in other Places of Daniel, a Week, that is, seven Days, signifies seven Years, so here 2300 Days must signify 2300 Years; and so of the rest.”
R. Moody (1787), in his work, “Observations On Certain Prophecies In The Book of Daniel, And The Revelation of St. John, Which Relate To The Second Appearing of Our Lord,” he states, “In his days, however, the mystery of God shall be finished, the 2300 years shall terminate, and Zion shall put on her beautiful garments, and as a bride, adorned in her attire, she shall be ready to meet her bridegroom.”
James Bicheno (1789), in his book, “The Signs Of The Times: On The Overthrow Of The Papal Tyranny In France,” he writes, “Daniel’s time, times, and half a time (1260 years) begin and end with the five numbers in the Apocalypse, and as they are 1260 years, and supposed to end at the French revolution, they must begin A.D. 529, and end in 1789. Daniel’s 2300 years begin 481 years before Christ, and end in 1819, when some other great event, or events, will take place.”
Samuel Osgood (1794), in his work, “Remarks on the Book Of Daniel, And On The Revelations,” wrote, “The 2300 days are a plain confirmation of that construction : for, from the destruction of imperial Babylon by Cyrus, to the death of Darius Codomannus, there are 210 years computed. But it is most probable that the Persian empire lasted 210 years: and, from the observations before made with respect to the chronology of Cyrus, it may be probable, and Darius, and of Alexander; the first is 2520 years, the latter is 2300 years; both end at the same time.”
Triebner (1794), in his work, “A Key To The French Revolution; Or, An Account Of Modern Jesuitism,” he explains, “If according to Archbishop Usher, Annales, page 87, Rome has been built 748 years before Christ, Daniel’s 2300 years, chap. viii. 14. exactly coincide with the year 1552, the establishment of the Protestant religion. The application of three times 666 and a half, to Daniel’s time, times, an half a time, i.e. 2331, is thereby confirmed, and reaches the year 1583.”
John Finlayson (1797), in his work, “An Admonition To The People Of All Countries,” he explains, “This year, 538, appears to have given birth to several great events; and when I consider that the forty and two months, which is 1260 days, meaning years, added to 538, reach to 1798, the memorable year in which Daniel’s 2300 years expire in, I cannot allow myself to doubt, for a moment, but the forty and two months commenced in 538.”
David Dick (1799), in his work, “An Explanation Of The Revelation Of St John The Divine,” he admits, “. . . end of the Roman Antichristian State. Now, I am to consider the partial numbers that is mentioned in Daniel, and in St John’s Revelation, and what I can borrow from the Roman history, and see how they agree with this total number of 2300 years.”
“The Connecticut Evangelical Magazine,” Volume IV, edition July 1803 TO June 1804, states, “So extensive is the term affixed for the continuation of this distressing and affecting scene, 2300 days, which prophetically computed are 2300 years. [Too bad for them on this next statement]. From what period to compute this term, it is very difficult to ascertain.”
In “The Christian Observer,” (1810), it mentions, “2300 years; the very year from which the seventy weeks of Daniel are calculated; the year 457 B.C., his 33rd year; and 1810 years, the remaining portion of the period of 2300 years, bring us to the hear 1843, the precise period pointed out.”
William Cummins Davis (1810-11), in his work, “The Millennium, or, A Short Sketch on the Rise and Fall of Antichrist,” he writes, “It must be evident that to the cleansing of the Sanctuary, means, to the commencement of the Millennium, when the true worship of God will be restored to the church. It is also evident that the 2300 days, are 2300 years, and consequently the end of these 2300 years must close the reign of popery.”
Adam Clark, of “Adam Clark’s Commentary Upon The Bible” fame (1832), breaking down Daniel 8:14, he comments, “Though literally it be two thousand three hundred evenings and mornings; yet I think the prophetic day should be understood here, as in other parts of this prophet, and must signify so many years.”
In the publication “The Morning Watch; Or Quarterly Journal On Prophecy, And Theological Review,” 1833 edition, we read, “The decree of Artaxerxes for restoring the Jewish polity is given at length in the vii th chapter of Ezra, and it was issued in the seventh year of that monarch’s reign, which was the hear A.C. 457. From which if we reckon the 2300 days, according to prophetic analogy, a day for a year, we shall fin that this period also terminates in A.D. 1843, when, without presumption, we may hope that the sanctuary will be cleansed and the kingdom be restored to Israel.”
Adam Hood Burwell (1835), in his work, “A Voice Of Warning And Instruction,” he writes, “We must therefore seek another and later period for the commencement of the 2300 days: and this we find in a subsequent vision concerning the events of the same great period, recorded in the ninth chapter, a part of which great period, recorded in the ninth chapter, a part of which great period is divided off into the seventy weeks, within which Messiah was to be cut off, namely, in the middle of the last week. The angel dated the commencement of the seventy weeks in the going forth of the commandment to restore and to rebuild Jerusalem. But as there were three such commandments, we are forced to take the last one, i.e. that given by Artaxerxes in the year 453 before Christ, the true date of which we find by counting back from the year of our Lord 37, the conclusion of the seventieth week.”
Note: Although 2300 days and not years is mentioned, the only way he could get from the Ezra decree to the time of Christ is to use the day for a year principle.
Bishop Wilson (1836), in his work, “On The Numbers In Daniel,” wrote, “To prove the single point, that the 2300 years of Daniel, chap. viii. come to their conclusion in 1847, we have needed no other data than those found in the prophecy itself, combined with the acknowledged fact, that Christ was born 1835 years ago, and crucified in the middle of the week.”
Not to mention German writers, such as Heinrich Richter (1837), for which I need a translator, it is a fact, by the time we get to William Miller (February 15, 1782 -- December 20, 1849), he is found on the list of those using the day/year principle, in order by date, to be the 77th known person to come to the conclusion that the 2300-day prophecy meant 2300 years. And of course, there were more after him which I will not list any of; for I’m sure my CRITICS have stopped reading by now.
I have great respect for the many people that attempted to place their 2300-year events to world events. One in particular was John Bacon, who in 1799, predicted that the starting event was in B.C. 334, focusing upon the return of the Jews and Alixander the Great, in the “Battle of the Granicus,” which was the first of three major battles between him and the Persian empire. This would extend to 1966 for the return of the Jews as nation. Amazing, since he did not live to see his prediction come true. Too bad he didn’t understand the Sanctuary truths of the Bible.
Although these calculations were incorrect, it still shows the day-for-a-year principle being understood and used in Biblical prophetic reasoning.
To properly understand the Daniel 8:14 statement (question), one needs to focus upon “when” the prophecy began, and “then” when it ENDS; which is more important than on how long the prophecy lasted. The “cleansing” didn’t begin during the “2300” years; but at the end of the prophecy.
Despite the FACT that this is prophetic language, and should be interpreted as such, this prophetic period should be calculated on the basis of the day-year principle, which means that the 2,300 “evenings and mornings” correspond to a timespan of 2,300 years. Otherwise, the 2,300 days would amount to a bit more than just six years, which would be an impossibly short time for all the events of the vision to transpire. Hence, the day-year principle must be in effect.
However, CRITICS argue that according to Daniel 8:26, this passage should be translated as, “two thousand and three hundred evenings and mornings.” This does not present a problem if you consider what an “evening and morning” is. According to the creation account in Genesis, Chapter One, “and the evening and the morning were the” whatever, “day,” clearly refers to a literal “day,” or 24-hour period. In other words, an “evening and a morning” equal “one day.” This should be granted. But as mentioned before, to have all these events fit into less than 7 years is out of line with reason. Thus, the prophetic Day / Year principle of Bible prophecy must be in place here.
The Adventists at the time, continued to set dates for the Second Coming, believing they were a few months or years off. Therefore, in 1845 Ellen White received a vision from the Lord and wrote this: “Different times were set for the Lord to Come, and were urged upon the brethren. But the Lord showed me that they would pass by, for the time of trouble must take place before the Coming of Christ, and that every time that was set, and passed, would weaken the faith of God’s people. For this I was charged with being the evil servant that said, ‘My Lord delayeth His Coming.’ ” 1T:72.2.
“Jesus entered the Most Holy of the Heavenly [Sanctuary], at the end of the 2300 days of Dan. viii, in 1844, to make a final atonement for all who could be benefited by His mediation, and to cleanse the Sanctuary.” 1SG:162.
“The history of ancient Israel is a striking illustration of the past experience of the Adventist body. God led His people in the Advent movement, even as He led the children of Israel from Egypt. In the great disappointment their faith was tested as was that of the Hebrews at the Red Sea. Had they still trusted to the guiding hand that had been with them in their past experience, they would have seen of the salvation of God. If all who had labored unitedly in the work in 1844 had received the third angel’s message, and proclaimed it in the power of the Holy Spirit, the Lord would have wrought mightily with their efforts. A flood of light would have been shed upon the world. Years ago the inhabitants of the earth would have been warned, the closing work completed, and Christ would have come for the redemption of His people.” 4SP:291.1; GC:457.2.
“The Lord has shown me in vision that Jesus rose up, and shut the door, and entered the holy of holies, at the seventh month, 1844,” WLF:12. “Thus the prophecy. . . unquestionably points to the Sanctuary in Heaven.” GC:417.

“The tenth day of the seventh month, the great day of atonement, the time of the cleansing of the Sanctuary, (Lev. 16:29-34) which in the year 1844 fell upon the twenty-second of October, was regarded as the time of the Lord’s Coming.” GC:400.
“the Sanctuary be cleansed” = This is “Day of Atonement” language and symbolizes Christ moving from the Holy Place into the Most Holy Place. This is confirmed by seeing Revelation 11:18, where judgment is taking place, and Revelation 11:19, shows us that that judgment is in the Most Holy Place, where “the Ark of His Testament” is. This is echoed in Revelation 15:4 (judgment) and 15:5 (in Most Holy Place).
We must bear in mind that the “cleansing of the Sanctuary” mentioned in Daniel 8:14, corresponds to the judgment scene depicted in Daniel 7:9-14. And since that judgment takes place in Heaven, the Sanctuary mentioned here in Daniel 8:14 must be located in Heaven also. Thus, while Daniel, Chapter 7, portrays God’s intervention in and relationship with human affairs from a judicial perspective (or earthly), Daniel, Chapter 8, describes the same event from a Sanctuary (Heavenly) perspective.
Here is my Leviticus 16:16 Note: “Holy Place” = From, “The Complete Word Study Dictionary,” on, the Hebrew word, “qodes.” “A masculine noun meaning a holy thing, holiness, and sacredness. [Interrupting, here is my Leviticus 16:3 Note: “come into the holy place: with a young bullock” = The supplied word is “place.” The Hebrew word for “holy” used here and in verses 2 & 3 & 4 is, “qodesh,” and strictly means, “holy,” and not “holy place.” In verse 2 we have, “within the vail before the Mercy Seat,” definitely meaning we can add the words, “Most Holy Place,” but not “Holy Place,” as in verse 2. In verse 4 it is plainly translated correctly as “holy.”
My point is, the High Priest did not bring the animals themselves into the “Holy Place,” or the “Most Holy Place;” only their blood. Verse 15 makes this analogy very clear.]. The word indicates something consecrated and set aside for sacred use only; it was not to be put into common use, for if it was, it became profaned and common (hol), not holy. This noun described holy offerings or things used in Israel’s cult; it described the holy offerings which only the priest or his family could eat (Lev. 22:10). Some of the offerings of the Lord were described as Most Holy (Lev. 2:3, Lev. 2:10; Num. 18:9); various things could be consecrated as holy: warriors (1Sa. 21:6); food (Exo. 29:33); and the places where the holy ark had been located (2Ch. 8:11). Only holy priests could go into the Temple (2Ch. 23:6). Many vessels and items used in the Tabernacle or Temple areas were holy (Ezra 8:28; Exo. 30:32, Exo. 30:35). The Sabbath was, of course, holy (Exo. 31:14).”
CRITICS claim that the phrase “the Sanctuary be cleansed” should be translated as “the Sanctuary will be justified,” and refers to the restoration of the Jerusalem Temple from what Antiochus IV Epiphanes did to It. However, the Niphal of “s-d-q” verb for “will be justified” in Daniel 8:14 does not appear in the Old Testament in regards to the Day of Atonement. For Antiochus IV Epiphanes not fitting this prophecy, see my Bible Study: “ANTIOCHUS IV EPIPHANES.”
“Sanctuary” = The Hebrew word for “Sanctuary” is “H6944; qodesh,” meaning, “to set apart; apartness, holiness, sacredness, separateness.” It also designates Divine Holiness, as in the Lord alone can swear by His Own Holiness (Psa. 89:35 [36]; Amos 4:2); and His ways are holy (Psa. 77:13 [14]). In fact, God is marvelous in holiness (Exo. 15:11).
Since the Lord is Holy, He expected Israel to be holy. This word described the essence of the Israelites. They were His holy people (Exo. 22:31 [30]; Exo. 28:36).
“Qodesh” also describes “holiness” when it relates to various things. “Holiness” adhered to the Lord’s house and beautified it (Psa. 93:5). The Lord’s Name is “Holy” (Lev. 20:3; Lev. 22:2; Eze. 39:7, Eze. 39:25; Amos 2:7). The Lord will establish His “Holy Mountain” when all the earth will know Him (Isa. 11:9; Isa. 56:7). Zion is God’s “Holy hill” (Dan. 9:20; Joel 3:17 [4:17]).
This word is also used when referring to “holy places.” God’s presence is what makes any place, anything, or anyone “Holy” (Exo. 3:5). The Holy Place in the Tabernacle (Exo. 26:33; Exo. 28:29) was separated from the Most Holy Place by a curtain (Exo. 26:33). Thus, the word refers to the Most Holy Place in the Temple as well (1Ki. 6:16). This word, when used with the definite article, refers to the entire Tabernacle (Exo. 36:1, Exo. 36:3-4; Exo. 38:27). And later, it refers to the Temple Solomon built (1Ki. 8:8). Literally, the word “H6944; qodesh” can designate the Holy Place (Psa. 60:6 [8]; Psa. 63:2 [3]).
Therefore, “Holy Place” [or in our text here, “Sanctuary”] should be translated here as, “Most Holy Place.” In addition, the Hebrew word can also mean, “Holy Places,” referring to every “Holy Thing” that needed to be cleansed. To translate it as “Most Holy Place” would be accepted in that by cleansing the “Most Holy Place” you have essentially cleansed everything, making them all Holy again.
“cleansed” = CRITICS claim that the Hebrew word used for “cleanse” in Leviticus 16:19, is “H2891; taher,” meaning, “to be pure; to cleanse; to be whole.” It can literally mean, “To be Levitically uncontaminated.” While the Hebrew word for “cleansed” in Daniel 8:14, is “H6663; tsadaq,” meaning, “to be just; to be justified; to be righteous; to cleanse; to clear oneself; to make right,” and is not the same, and as such, it thus refers to a different event then the “cleansing” of the Heavenly Sanctuary. Take note that there were many “cleansings” of the earthly Sanctuary (see 2Ch. 29:16 as an example), which are and will be different from the “cleansing” of the Heavenly Sanctuary.
The “cleansing” done by the “taher” form, “to be clean,” lacks to “cleansing” of the “tsadaq” form, in that the later pronounces the Sanctuary to be “righteous.” In like manner, the Heavenly Sanctuary can never be “tahered,” because man -- the Levitical system -- can never “cleanse” the Heavenly. Only God Himself, the Son of Man, can perform that duty.
Simply put, mankind needs to be “righteous.” Whereas, the Sanctuary is not a person but a place, or object. It would need to be cleaned, but not made “righteous” as a man would be. It is an item, not a person.
Take note that most Bible translations translate Daniel 8:14’s “cleansed” as “reconsecrated,” or “made right again,” or “properly restored,” or something different then the proper translation of “cleansed,” in the effort to continue with their false assumption of Antiochus Epiphanes being the fulfilment of this prophecy after the Maccabean revolt. See my Bible Study upon him to see how this cannot possibly be the case. Some versions do stick with the proper way to translated it: “LSB,” is “made righteous.” “SLT,” is “justified.” “YLT,” is “declared right.” These capture the true meaning of “tsadaq,” just as the “KJV” does.
In every instance of the Hebrew word “taher” being used (95 times), it is a ritualistic type of cleansing. Either of an individual or of the Sanctuary Itself; facilitated by the High Priest, or priestly duties of the day or hour. By contrast, in Daniel 8:14, “tsadaq” could be translated as “justified,” which it is mostly translated as in the Old Testament. Herein is brought out the true concept of “justification.” That being, “the event or process by which sinners are made or declared to be righteous in the sight of God.” Thus, so is the “cleansing” of the Sanctuary, in that It will be declared “cleansed” from sin. Not by the earthly Levitical system, but by the Son of God Himself. Thus, “taher” is “justified” here in Daniel 8:14, as a final judgment to take place to “cleanse” the Heavenly Sanctuary (and Cosmos) of sin for all eternity.
The Hebrew related word to “tsadaq,” is the verb “H6664; tsedeq,” and is usually rendered: “be restored; be cleansed; be vindicated; be just; be righteous.” See Job 15:14; 25:4; Psalm 51:4. It normally comes from a root that refers to the restoration of the rights of an individual who has been falsely accused, such as in Psalm 7:8 and 9:4, where “tsedeq” is translated as “righteousness” and “right.” A form of it is also used as a synonym for salvation in Isaiah 1:27 (H6666; tsedaqah). The point being, that in Hebrew parallelism, cleanliness is often correlated with justice (cleansing and judgment go hand-in-hand). See Psalm 106:3.
When we come to our Hebrew word for “cleansed” in Daniel 8:14, in the context of being used as a verb, “H6663; tsadaq,” it conveys the concept of “cleansing,” and is a synonym for “purity” (as in Job 4:17), from which the restoration or vindication of sinners takes place through the “cleansing” process (see Isa. 53:11). If we go to Job 4:17, “more just” correlates to “pure.” The Hebrew word used for “pure” is “H2891; taher,” meaning “pure; sound; clear; unadulterated; morally innocent; CLEAN; CLEANSE.” A related word, “H2889; tahor,” is used in Job 17:9, meaning “clean; pure; purge.”
Thus, combined in the Hebrew verb “H6663; tsadaq,” it comprises legal salvation and cleansing concepts, which indicates that our Lord wanted to convey the broadness and all-encompassing character of what this “cleansing” was really affecting. In other words, the entire sanctification (cleansing) of everything (the Cosmos made new).
The Greek word for “cleansed” is “katharizo,” which is the same word translated that way in the “Septuagint,” (the Greek translation of the Old Testament), of Daniel 8:14. It also appears in Hebrews 9:23, translated as “purified,” also meaning “cleansed.”
Looking at the Hebrew word “H6664; tsedeq” again, we know that it has its origin in the Hebrew word “H6663; tsadaq,” which has several meanings, and is variously translated as “right; righteous; just; justified (see particularly Isa. 53:11); purged; purified; cleansed.” The “Septuagint” translates this word as “purified.” Therefore, it must be recognized that “purification; cleansing; purging,” may have approximately the same meaning.
The “Septuagint’s” translation of “katharizo,” is where we acquire our English word, “cathartic” from. Cathartic is a synonym for “purge.” And “katharizo” appears in Leviticus 16:30 twice, and this is dealing with the “Day of Atonement.” What is taking place is that the High Priest was “purging,” i.e., “cleansing” the people from their sins. Also, in Hebrews 9:23, we find the apostle Paul using “katharizo” in the sense of one being “purified.”
Looking at Leviticus 16:19, which Leviticus, Chapter 16, is dealing with the Day of Atonement, and is dispensing with the “cleansing of the Sanctuary.” The Hebrew word for “cleansing; cleanse; purify,” is a related word to “tsedeq,” which is “H2891; taher,” and is used in the sense of to “hallow” and “cleanse” the Sanctuary of Its “uncleanness.”
However, in Isaiah 53:11, we have our great High Priest “justifying” many, while in the typical service the High Priest was to “H6663; tsadaq,” i.e., “cleanse” the people from all their sins. Therefore, we must pay close attention to the context and structuring of the sentences. In these two cited cases, one is the type, the other is the antitype. Therefore, to conclude, the “cleansing,” or “justifying” of the Sanctuary is the work of “purifying,” or “purging” It from sin.
The judgment scene in Daniel 7:10 -- which arises after the 1,260 years (538-1798 A.D.) -- of Papal Rome, directly parallels the cleansing of the Sanctuary, which in Daniel 8:14, arises after Rome as well. In short, this Heavenly judgment in Daniel 7:10, equals the judgment that leads to the end of the world and is the same thing as the cleansing of the Sanctuary in Daniel 8:14. Thus, we are given here two different depictions of the same event and both occur after the 1,260-year period of persecution perpetrated by the “little horn” power.
Why the October 22nd date? According to Exodus 12:2 and 13:4, the first Jewish month is called “Abib.” This is when the barley was supposed to have been ripened. However, if the barley was not yet ripe by the end of the 12th month, a 13th month was added before the starting of the next year.
The Millerites, in checking with Palestine, indicated that the barley was not ripe, and the new moon had not been sighted. Therefore, instead of using the established September month, they determined to use the next month of October for Christ’s Second Coming.

8:16: “Gabriel” = Meaning, “The Greatness of God.”
8:17: “for at the time of the end shall be the vision” = This is a clear statement that the 2300-day vision will conclude near the last days of this earth. Thus, as some Bible commentators have concluded, Antiochus IV Epiphanes cannot be anywhere the subject of this prophecy.
8:20: “ram. . . having two horns” = Media-Persia (see Dan. 2:39; 7:5).
8:21: “rough goat” = Greece (see Dan. 8:5).
“great horn. . . the first king” = Alexander the Great.
8:22: “four kingdoms” = Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus, Ptolemy (see Dan. 7:6; 8:8; 11:4).
“that” = Alexander the Great.
8:23: “in the latter time of their kingdom” = Speaking of Greece. “In the latter time of their kingdom” correlates to “At the end of their rule.” Note that according to Daniel 8:8, Ptolemy “waxed very great,” while according to Daniel 8:9, this “little horn” “waxed exceeding great.”
The “their kingdom” would be the end of the four generals of Alexander the Great.
“a king of fierce countenance. . . shall stand up” = Papal Rome (see Dan. 8:9; Note how this section skips Pagan Rome and moves right into Papal Rome, focusing on the “blasphemous,” i.e., religious part of its power instead of its political power). To say that this “king” comes out of or from “Greece” and is a “Greek” power, is to miss the “blasphemous” part it now plays as described in the Book of Daniel. Plus, no Grecian Monark is found to fit this prophecy and this power supersedes all of the powers of the previous (four generals) power. Compare with Daniel 8:9. This is just more information and a recap. Because none of the four Grecian generals expanded like this power did.
Plus, Rome could be said to have come out of the four Greek (horns) generals conquests, because it first took over Antigonid Macedonia (MW of Israel) in B.C. 168 at the “Battle of Pydna.” Rome then proceeded to conquer the other Greek kingdoms one by one. In B.C. 129, Attalid Pergamon; B.C. 63, Seleucid Syria; and B.C. 30, Ptolemaic Egypt.
The “fierce countenance” indicates the persecuting power that it (the “Little Horn”) will have.
8:24: “his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power” = Shifting from a strictly political power, Rome now accepts the (“mystery of iniquity,” 2Th. 2:7-10) power of Satan and becomes Papal Rome.
“destroy the mighty and the holy people” = For 1260 years (see Dan. 7:25).
8:25: “he shall magnify himself” = Blasphemy; see my Daniel 7:8 Note.
Here is my Revelation 13:6 Note: “he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, and His tabernacle, and them that dwell in Heaven” = This parallels Daniel 7:25’s “little horn,” and thus should be identified as the same character. There is a key point given us here in this verse. The only way anyone could “blasphemy against God” and “His Name” and “them that dwell in Heaven,” while being here on earth, would be to attack His “tabernacle.” And just what is this “tabernacle?” Since, in previous Chapters leading up to this point in time, according to Revelation 11:19, we have moved into the Most Holy Place of the “tabernacle.”
Also, according to Revelation 12:17, “the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the Commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Thus, it becomes clear that this “beast” commits blasphemy against God. In other words, by the breaking, or CHANGING of God’s Law. And as we shall see, he has this power to do so: “and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations,” Revelation 12:7.
“he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes” = By changing of “Times and Laws,” Daniel 7:25, this “little horn,” i.e., Papal Rome, seeks to change the Seventh-day Biblical Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday, thus going against the Laws of Jesus.
“broken without hand” = Nothing man does can break this power; it is spiritually done; Divinely accomplished.
“broken without hand. . . Stone was cut out. . . without hands” = Second Coming (see Dan. 2:34 & 44-45; 7:22 & 27; 12:1 & 7).
Therefore, “The Worship Of The Beast” = Violation of Commandment Number One.
Making “The Image To The Beast” = Violation of Commandment Number Two.
Taking “The Name Of The Beast” = Violation of Commandment Number Three.
While, “The Mark Of The Beast” = Violation of Commandment Number Four.
8:26: “the vision of the evening and the morning” = Speaking NOT of verse 13 (see my explanation there), but of Daniel 8:14, which cannot be referring to “sacrifices,” verse 13, for “sacrifices,” rather, “burnt offerings” were offered “morning and evening,” according to Exodus 29:38-39; First Chronicles 16:40; Second Chronicles 2:4; 13:11; Ezra 3:3.
“for it shall be for many days” = Here we can clearly see that Gabriel is telling Daniel “it,” the vision, is speaking of literal “days.” And prophetically, years.

CHAPTER NINE
9:1: “Medes” = The kingdom of Media. According to “John Gills Bible Commentary:” “This is the same with Darius the Median, that took the kingdom after the death of Belshazzar; so called, to distinguish him from Darius the Persian [mentioned in Neh. 12:22].”
“which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans” = According to Xenophon: Darius was “made king” “by Cyrus his [Darius’] nephew; who having taken Babylon, and settled his [Cyrus] affairs, undertook a journey to Persia, and made Media in his [Cyrus’] way; where he met with his uncle Cyaxares, the same with this Darius [Cyaxares = Darius; as “Darius the Mede” is not mentioned in secular history], and delivered the kingdom of Babylon to him [Darius], and married his [Cyrus married Darius’] daughter, with whom he [Cyrus] had for her dowry the kingdom of Media.” “Cyropaedia,” l. 8. c. 36.
It was no unusual thing for the kings of the East to have several names, and one writer might refer to them under one name, and another under another.
According to “Albert Barns Bible Commentary:” “The king here referred to under this name was Cyaxares II, who lived between Astyages and Cyrus, and in whom was the title of king. He was the immediate successor of Belshazzar, and was the predecessor of Cyrus, and was the first of the foreign princes that reigned over Babylon.
“There are three Medo-Persian kings of the name of Darius mentioned in the Old Testament. One occurs in the book of Ezra Ezr 4:5; Ezr 6:1, Ezr 6:12, Ezr 6:15, in Haggai Hag 1:1; Hag 2:10, and in Zechariah Zec 1:7, as the king who, in the second year of his reign, effected the execution of those decrees of Cyrus which granted the Jews the liberty of rebuilding the temple. . .
“It appears from the passage in Dan 5:30-31; Dan 6:28, that Darius the Mede obtained the dominion over Babylon on the death of Belshazzar, who was the last Chaldean king, and that he was the immediate predecessor of Koresh (Cyrus) in the sovereignty.”
9:2: “by Books the number of the years. . . accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem” = See Second Chronicles 36:21; Ezra 1:1; Isaiah 23:15 & 17; Jeremiah 25:11-12; 29:10; Zechariah 1:12; 7:5.
What is interesting to note is that Daniel took these 70 years to be literal years, whereas, the 70 weeks prophecy (Dan. 9:24) we take to be a day for a year. The key is, “by books the number of the years” must be a literal prophecy. Plus, we are told these years are specific to the anger of the Lord “until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths” (see referenced verses above) that were not observed properly in Israel for 490 years. Thus the literal punishment.
9:22: “I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding” = That this Chapter is a continuation of the explanation of the vision in Chapter 8, is evident by the statement, “I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding,” because according to Chapter 8, verse 27, “but none understood it.” Then Daniel, Chapter 9, verse 23states: “consider the vision.” What other vision but the one Gabriel was commissioned to make Daniel to “understand” (see Dan. 8:16 & 19; 9:23), since no other vision had been given since the vision of Chapter eight.
In fact, the Hebrew root verb “bin,” translated “understood,” Daniel 8:27, is the same root word that appears in Daniel 9:22, wherein Gabriel says that he came to give him skill and “understanding [from “bin”].” Also, according to Daniel 8:27, “Daniel fainted” before Gabriel was able to finish the explanation of the vision given to Daniel. When Gabriel says, “understand the matter, and consider the vision,” verse 23, he does not use the general word “chazon,” which refers to the vision as a whole, as in Daniel 8:1 & 13; 9:21. Instead, he uses the Hebrew verb “maren,” which is used specifically for the vision of the 2,300 days -- the only part of Chapter 8 that Daniel did not understand.
In Chapter 8, Gabriel tells Daniel specifically that the vision, the “mareh” of the 2,300 days, was “true,” Daniel 8:26. However, Daniel states that he didn’t understand that “mareh,” verse 27; that is, the “mareh” about the 2,300 days. In Daniel 8:1-2, Daniel three times makes reference to the “vision” of the Chapter. And each time Daniel uses the same Hebrew word, “hazon.” By contrast, when Daniel talks specifically about the 2,300 days, Daniel uses a different word for “vision” in Daniel 8:26-27, i.e., “mareh.”
Thus, we have two words for “vision” in Daniel, Chapter 8: “hazon,” for the whole vision, and “mareh,” Daniel 8:14, for the vision about the 2,300 days and the Sanctuary being cleansed (the only part that Daniel didn’t understand, see Dan. 8:27). Now these two words appear again in Daniel, Chapter 9, when Gabriel again appears to Daniel: “Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision [hazon] at the beginning. . . touched me. . . therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision [mareh].” Daniel 9:21-23.
Consider what “mareh?” There is only one: the “mareh” of the 2,300 days that Daniel specifically said he didn’t understand. In fact, the word translated “consider” comes from our Hebrew word “bin,” which also links this “vision” to the “mareh” of Daniel 8:26, in which Daniel needed understanding, “bin,” about. Clearly, the explanation of Daniel 9:24-27 is linked to the 2,300 days of the previous Chapter. Thus, Gabriel came to give Daniel “understanding” about the “mareh” of the 2,300 days and not some new “hazon.”
An Orthodox Jewish commentary, referring to Gabriel’s words in Daniel 9:23, “understand the matter, and consider the vision,” points right back to Daniel 8:14, stating: “This refers to Daniel’s vision in Chapter 8 in which the part which disturbed him so (v. 14) is characterized in vs. 16-26 as a mareh.” “Daniel, Art Scroll Tanach Series,” (Brooklyn, New York: “Mesorah Publications,” Ltd., 1988, page 258).
9:23: “greatly beloved” = It is interesting to note that the most “greatly beloved” of the Old Testament, Daniel, and the most “loved” of the New Testament, John (see John 13:23; 20:2; 21:7), are the ones who have the most apocalyptic visions.
“consider the vision” = What “vision?” The “vision” of Chapter 8.

9:24-27:ALL: BELIEF OF THE FOUR GROUPS.
Evangelicalism = The Rapture & Second Coming Of Messiah & The Anti-Christ & Building Of Third Temple.
Catholicism = Second Coming Of Messiah & The Gospel To The World.
Judaism = Setting Up Of The Third Temple & Reintroduction Of The Sacrificial System.
SDA’s = First Coming Of The Messiah & The End Of Jewish Probation.
All agree that this prophecy covers 490 years. However, Evangelicalism and Catholicism are the only groups to separate week 70 from week 69. By contrast, only the SDA’s are consistent in understanding that a “Day Equals A Year” in Biblical prophecy. Also, this is the only place [Dan. 9:24-27] where the other groups apply this principle to; ignoring other places such as Daniel 8:14, where it should also apply.
Evangelicalism ignores the Sacrifice of Messiah in 31 A.D. and as such creates the false “Rapture Theory” and false seven year “Time of Trouble” interpretations. You cannot have the “Time of Trouble” period being at the end of time while at the same time ignoring that Messiah is “cut off,” in the midst of that time period. You also cannot move from the 69th week ending somewhere back in history and move the 70th week to the end of time, separating it from the 69th week. In other words, 70 comes after 69 always. Daniel 9:24, “finish the transgression” means, end of rejection of God. And “to make reconciliation for iniquity,” means, to accept Jesus’s blood on the cross. While “to bring in everlasting righteousness” means, Messiah to reign on earth, which is totally incorrect. Since the righteous meet Him “in the air,” First Thessalonians 4:17, and go to Heaven, not earth. Then, “seal up the vision and prophecy,” means, no more prophecies of Messiah, which is how they ignore Messiah being “cut off” in the midst of their false interpretation of the 7-year tribulation period. While, “to anoint the most Holy” means, Second Coming of Jesus and/or, the Millennium Temple set up. Consider, the Scriptures would not give you all of these warnings about the Tribulation if you were not going to go through it?
Catholicism ignores the First Coming of Messiah as is clearly prophesied here. Daniel 9:24 means, “to finish the transgression and to make an end of sins,” equals, end of rebellion and deviation from God’s Will. And “to make reconciliation for iniquity,” means, to accept Jesus Sacrifice. While, “to bring in everlasting righteousness” means, to proclaim an eternal standard of righteousness that surpasses the temporary righteousness under the law of the Papacy [ever changing, aren’t they?]. Plus, “to seal up the vision and prophecy” means, to confirm and conclude all prophecies concerning Christ’s Advent. While, “to anoint the most Holy” means, to sanctify and consecrate Christ as the ultimate fulfillment of Divine promises and prophecies. Thus, this is not Christ’s righteousness coming in; but Catholic righteousness being set up.
Judaism ignores the Messiah entirely. Messiah is to Come at the end of the world for Jews only “upon thy people,” Daniel 9:24. Messiah will set up the Third Temple “upon thy holy city,” Daniel 9:24, in Jerusalem, and make war against the Non-Jewish Nations. What they ignore is that the prophecy says, “restore and to build Jerusalem,” Daniel 9:25, NOT “restore and to build” the third Temple!!! Continuing Daniel 9:24, “to make reconciliation for iniquity” is understood as, “to atone for their past transgressions.” And “to bring in everlasting righteousness” means, that the Temple service renewed will bring in righteousness. Question, can the Temple services bring in righteousness? And “seal up the vision and prophecy,” means promises of the prophets are fulfilled and the end of the prophetic era. While, of course, “to anoint the most Holy,” means, the third Temple set up. The point is, the Jewish nation had 490 years to fulfill these conditions; but of course, they did not repent, nor accept their Messiah. Thus, their probation period ended in 34 A.D. as this prophecy should be understood.
Judaism takes he 490 years as being the time span between the destruction of the first Temple (B.C. 586) to the destruction of the second Temple (70 A.D.). Note: That’s a problem of an 166 year gap. Jewish Ideology now has the destruction of the first temple in B.C. 420-423, (421 being the only date to work for them), with NO historical data for proof; knowing that the 70 A.D. date is unarguable (and the B.C. 586 to be unarguable also).
Let’s explore why the B.C. 586 date is correct. Keep in mind Jeremiah 52:12-13. According to Second Kings 25:2, in the 11th year of king Zedekiah, Jerusalem was besieged. The prophet Jeremiah lived through 4 main kings. King Josiah, about B.C. 640-609; King Jehoiakim, about B.C. 609-598; King Jehoiachin, about B.C. 598-597; and King Zedekiah, about B.C. 597-586. The B.C. 586 date of the 11th year of King Zedekiah is based upon Jewish records, historical records, and archeological evidence. If Jewish ideology wants to change this date to B.C. 421 in order to make this Daniel prophecy fit their time line, it will ruin all of their kings and other historical events so much so that nothing can be reconciled.
Back to Jeremiah 52:12-13. Does the 19th year of Nebuchadnezzar line up? According to “The Canon of Ptolemy,” based upon an eclipse in Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, he reigned from B.C. 605-562. That means the 19th year would be B.C. 586. IF Judaism would accept their Messiah, they would not have to change history in order to support their false doctrines.
Besides “The Canon of Ptolemy,” we have “The Babylonian Chronicles,” “The Astronomical Diaries,” and “The Library of Ashurbanipal,” all backing up or are close to the B.C. 586 date. Thus, basically, most of Judaism ignores the 166-year gap.
Before we delve into Daniel, Chapter 9, verses 24-27, let me first state that Origen of Alexandria (185-253), and Eusebius of Caesarea (260-339), and John Tillinghast, an English Clergyman (1604-1655), and Johann Petri (1497-1550), agree with the SDA’s and my findings.
Origen = From “Origen; An Exhortation To Martyrdom Prayer; First Principles Book IV,” page 175, “Also, the weeks of years [Day For A Year Bible Principle] up to the time of Christ [Start of Christ’s Ministry] the Leader that Daniel the prophet predicted were fulfilled (Dan. 9:24).”
Eusebius = From “The Book of Eusebius #3; The Proof of the Gospel being the Demonstatio Evangelica,” pages 342-343, under “155,” [342] But after the prophecy of the events that happened to the Jewish nation in the intermediate period between the seven and sixty-two weeks, there follows the prophecy of the new Covenant announced by our Saviour. So when all the intermediate matter between the seven and the sixty-two weeks is finished, there is added, ‘And He will confirm a Covenant with many one week,’ and in half the week [3 1/2 years; Christ crucified] the sacrifice and the libation shall be taken away, and on the Holy Place [Christ ascended to the Holy Place] shall come the abomination of desolation, and until the fullness of time fullness shall [343]
“be given to the desolation. Let us consider how this was fulfilled.
“156. Now the whole period of our Saviour’s Teaching and working of Miracles is said to have been three-and-a-half years, which is half a week. John the Evangelist, in his Gospel, makes this clear to the attentive.
“157. One week of uyears therefore would be represented by the whole period of His association with the Apostles, both the time fbefore His Passion, and the time after His Resurrection.
“158. For it is written that before His Passion He shewed Himself for the space of three-and-a-half years to His disciples and also the those who were not His disciples.”
John Tillinghast = From his book, “Knowledge of the Times,” page 152-153, “[152] This seventy weeks is a lesser Epock comprehended within the greater of two thousand and [153] three hundred years, consisting of four hundred and ninety days; for seventy weeks being reduced into days, amount to the aforesaid number, which according to the Prophetical way of speaking is so many years, viz. four hundred and ninety years [Day For A Year Bible Principle].”
From page 173, Part 3, “In the judgement (faith he) of a learned Author, the two thousand three hundred days’ are unappliable to Antiochus Epiphanes. . . and therefore it cannot fill up exactly the measure of two thousand three hundred days, which space containeth six years, three months, and twenty days; for the three months, and twenty days, would over-abound.”
Johann Petri = From his book, “Johannes Petreivs Langendorfenlis,” in German, page Nine, “The angel Gabriel showed the thirtieth year of Christ or the 483rd year of the 70 weeks and therefore the 453rd year as the birth of Christ, so that was the correct explanation of the sealed vision of the 2300 days. 453 years of the 2300 had passed at the birth of Christ and the remainder of this number continues from that date to A.D. 1847 [Actually 1844; his starting date being off by 3 years], as 1847 plus 453 makes 2300.”
9:24: “Seventy weeks are determined [B.C. 457 -- 34 A.D., dates discussed later, “determined” better translated as, “H2852; cut off,” or “marked off” from the “vision” of Daniel 8:14] upon thy people and upon the holy city, to finish the transgression [fill up the cup of your iniquity -- end of Israel’s probation, 34 A.D., Stephen was stoned; Acts 7:59]” = The word “determined,” as found here, literally means, “cut off.” Although the Hebrew word “H2852; chathak” is translated as “determined,” it is not used anywhere else in the Bible. However, it is found in Jewish literature and it means, “cutting off” from something that was longer. It is quite clear, and no one should argue, that these 70 years were “cut off” from the 2300-year prophecy of Daniel, Chapter Eight. Even if you don’t agree, no one has come up with a theory of it being “cut off” from some other prophecy -- because there is none.
Plus, it is generally agreed that the only Personage that fits this prophecy is Jesus Christ. And the only way to make the prophecy work is to extend it to Jesus; making the only logical explanation for this prophecy to work is to use the “Day For A Year” principle. Meaning also, that since this prophecy is “cut off” from the Daniel 8:14, 2300-year prophecy, therefore it logically is a “Day For A Year” application to it.
For more confirmation of the 34 A.D. date, here is my Acts 18:12 Note: “Gallio” = History confirms that Gallio was the “deputy of Achaia” in 51-52 A.D. At the stoning of Steven, Acts 7:58, Paul was in Jerusalem. According to Galatians 1:18, after returning to Jerusalem from his journeys (Damascus), “three years” had elapsed. Then, according to Acts 15:2, Paul again returns to Jerusalem from his other journeys, because of disputations in the Church, and what is now known as the Jerusalem council. And according to Galatians 2:1, this was “fourteen years” later. If we take 14 plus 3 we get 17. And when we subtract 17 from 51 A.D., we get 34 A.D.
For the “Close of Probation” for the Jewish nation, see Deuteronomy 32:26-38 [39-42 is if they repent]; Jeremiah 31:35-37; Matthew 3:10 & 12; Luke 3:9; Acts 7:43 & 58; 13:46; Romans 11:25.
Jesus Himself makes it clear that Israel no longer represents His values and failed in the mission given to them when He states, speaking of the then upcoming destruction of Israel and the reason for it and their ultimate “Close of Probation:” “And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; [HERE IS WHY] because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.” Luke 19:44.
Back to our Hebrew word used here for “determined,” which is “chathak,” and is only used once in the Bible. Figuratively it means “to decree,” meaning it has an ending point. Thus, to translate it as “cut off” could also be acceptable. However, why not use the Hebrew word “karath” for “cut off,” as Daniel used in verse 26? Either way, according to the Biblical text, the “seventy weeks” are “determined,” or “cut off.” This indicates that the time period of 490 years has been “cut off” from a larger time period, that is, from the 2,300 years designated in the vision of Chapter 8. It follows from this that the 2,300 years and the 490 years, must have the same starting point (namely, B.C. 457; discussed later).
Therefore, we will need to determine the starting point of the 2,300-day prophecy (discussed further down), which will give us the starting point of the 490-year (70 weeks) prophecy. Then we can separate (“cut off”) the 70 weeks prophecy from the 2,300-year prophecy (for year-for-a-day in prophetic time, see Genesis 29:27; Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:5-6; PK:698; DA:233 [For additional Day/Year principles see First Samuel 20:6; Psalm 90:10; Then see Genesis 6:3.]).
There are many reasons why the 70-week prophecy of Daniel 9:24-27, and the 2,300 evenings and mornings prophecy of Daniel 8:14 belong together:
1) Both are time prophecies;
2) The specific terminology of “vision” and “understanding” links them together (see Dan. 8:26, 27 and 9:23);
3) Both interpretations of the prophecies were given by the angel Gabriel (see Dan. 8:16 and 9:21);
4) The only part of the vision not explained in Daniel, Chapter 8, was the vision given about the 2,300 evenings and mornings (sometimes translated as “days”) in Daniel 8:14;
5) Daniel, Chapter 8, contains the vision and then a partial interpretation of it, while Daniel, Chapter 9, has an interpretation only, in this case, the interpretation of the only part of Daniel, Chapter 8, which was not interpreted and which was the 2,300-day prophecy of Daniel 8:14. Again, the one part of the vision that Daniel had not understood (see Dan. 8:27).
From 1SG:107 we learn: “Yet I saw that God marvelously preserved this people, and had scattered them over the world, that they might be looked upon as especially visited by a curse from God. I saw that God has forsaken the Jews as a nation; yet there was a portion of them who would be enabled to tear away the veil from their hearts. Some will yet see that prophecy has been fulfilled concerning them, and they will receive Jesus as the Saviour of the world, and see the great sin of their nation in rejecting Jesus, and crucifying Him. Individuals among the Jews will be converted; but as a nation they are forever forsaken of God.”
That the “seventy weeks” were devoted to ministering to the nation of Israel, i.e., “upon the people and upon the holy city,” until their iniquity was full, i.e., “to finish the transgression,” can be seen in our Lord’s ministry. However, after that time -- at the end of the “seventy weeks” -- the Jewish nation would see its “Close of Probation” for its rejection of its Messiah. That ended with the stoning of Steven (Acts, Chapter 7), in 34 A.D.
According to Humphryprital (17th century), in his work, “The Old and New Testament Connected in the History of the Jews and Neighboring Nations,” Volume 1, pages 362-363, we read, “That this prophecy doth relate primarily and especially to the Jews. For it expresseth the time that was determined upon the people of Daniel, that is, the Jews, and upon thy holy city, that is Jerusalem, the whole of which was seventy weeks; that is, that this was the time which God had fore-ordained and determined upon the Jews for their being His peculiar people, and upon Jerusalem for its being His holy city; after the expiration of which an end being put to the Mosaic economy, they should be no longer God’s peculiar people, and the worship which He had established at Jerusalem being to be abolished, that city should be no longer a city holy unto Him.”
From the book, “Messiah In His Sanctuary,” page 140, by F.C. Gilbert, we read: “Although the Saviour was no respecter of persons, and although during His ministry He supplied the needs of all classes of people, yet He told the woman of Canaan, who asked for help for her daughter, ‘I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of Israel.’ Matt. 15:24. His ministry was devoted to Daniel’s people, for the seventy weeks were ‘cut off’ upon that people.
“Before the Saviour left His disciples to return to Heaven, He gave them their commission as follows: ‘Ye shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.’ Acts 1:8. They were to confine their work at first to the Jewish people. This they did. For three and a half years after the Saviour’s ascension, not a sermon was preached outside of Judean territory. While the disciples were fulfilling Christ’s Command to preach in Jerusalem and in Judea, they were also fulfilling the prophecy of the angel Gabriel, when he said that the seventieth week was to be confined to the Jewish people. The first half of that prophetic week the Saviour Himself used in His ministry; the last half of the week the disciples spent in and about Judea.”
Gilbert goes on to point out that it was not until Stephen was stoned in 34 A.D., that Philip was sent forth into Samaria (Acts 8:1-5) and that the Jews started fleeing from Jerusalem for fear of persecution and death, which, of course, resulted in the further spreading of the Gospel in regions beyond Jewish territory.
It is also interesting to note that Jesus confirmed this when He just didn’t haphazardly pick the forgiveness of sins as “seventy times seven,” Matthew 18:22, “and to make an end of sins [Christ makes the last offering for sins on the cross] and to make reconciliation for iniquity [we are reconciled to God by the death of Christ, Rom. 5:10], and to bring in everlasting righteousness [through the grace of Christ], and to seal up [make sure, fulfill] the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the Most Holy [in the Heavenly Sanctuary, i.e., cleanse the Sanctuary {Dan. 8:14}, moving from the Holy Place to the Most Holy Place].”
What we have here, i.e., “Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon the holy city,” is more internal proof of the day/year principle. The command to restore and rebuild Jerusalem occurred many centuries before Christ. If taken as literal time, 70 weeks is just a year and a few months; hardly enough time to reach down to our Lord Jesus being crucified in 31 A.D. Application, however, of the day/year principle solves the problem. It covers the time span from the rebuilding of the city to the First Advent of Jesus. In short, the First Advent of Jesus proves the validity of the day/year principle. It is to be noted that the B.C. 457 -- 34 A.D. time period was first proposed by Johann Funck, in 1566 A.D., during the Reformation era, and was accepted by all at that time.
“determined” = Back to our translated word “determined,” the Hebrew verb “H2852; chathak,” only occurs here. However, in secular documents of the time, “determined” or “decreed” are viable translations. By contrast, “chatak” usually expressed the more concrete idea of separation by “cutting” or “cutting off” from something. In the majority of its usages in historical Jewish literature it literally meant, “cut off.” The root meaning of the Hebrew word “chatak,” here translated “determined,” is “to cut” or “divide.” The extended meaning is “to determine” or “allot to.”
Although this is the only occurrence of “chathak” in the Hebrew Bible, it does appear in later Jewish writings with its predominantly meaning as “to cut off.” And although various translations are used for the verb “chathak,” the basic meaning is that of “cut off,” which is how most Hebrew lexicons define it. In Ugaritic, a language similar to Hebrew, scholars have noted that the parallel word in that language for “chathak” means “cut off” as well. Thus, the basic rendering of the text is “Seventy weeks are cut off.” The question is, Cut off from what? And the obvious answer is, from the 2300-days vision of Daniel 8:14.
“The word here translated ‘determined,’ literally signifies ‘cut off.’ Seventy weeks, representing 490 years, are declared by the angel to be cut off, as specially pertaining to the Jews. But from what were they cut off? As the 2300 days was the only period of time mentioned in Chapter Eight, it must be the period from which the seventy weeks were cut off; the seventy weeks must therefore be a part of the 2300 days, and the two periods must begin together.” GC:326.
Six purposes are mentioned in this verse. They describe primarily the results of Christ’s life and work here on earth:
1) “to finish the transgression” = Transgression refers to the break in relationship between God and humankind. Through His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus brought to an end the broken relationship and restored us to God.
2) “to make an end of sins” = The Hebrew word, “chattength,” translated “sins,” can also mean “sin offering.” Therefore, more appropriately it would refer here to our Lord’s death upon the Cross, and the sacrificial service coming to an end, or culmination with this event. Gabriel here announces that the Messiah would take care of humankind’s failures. Christ would take their sins upon Himself and thereby make an “end” of them. Thus, one will put God’s Law into one’s inner soul (Jer. 31:33) and no longer break His Law.
3) “to make reconciliation for iniquity” = Man’s sin brought death upon this earth. By contrast, Christ’s sacrifice brought about a means for “reconciliation” towards our Heavenly Father and the opportunity for everlasting life. “Iniquity” is sin as in a perversion of what is right, like what we would call a “white lie.” Through the atoning sacrifice on the cross, Jesus Christ took care of sin in all its forms.
4) “to bring in everlasting righteousness” = This occurs by reason of our Lord’s Coming to this earth in person and living the righteous life that is demanded by the Law of God. Fulfilling this, the apostle speaks of this in First Corinthians 1:30: “Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” Through the fall, humanity has become unrighteous. The Messiah, says Gabriel, will bring in a righteousness from God that will be everlasting for those who make it their own through faith that results in obedience.
5) “to seal up the vision and prophecy” = The original Arabic is “chatham,” meaning, to “fulfill.” In Daniel 8:26, the meaning is, seal up the prophecy, or make a permanent record of it, that when it is fulfilled, the event may be compared with the prophecy, and it may be seen that the one corresponds with the other. So it may be interpreted here. The idea of sealing here doesn’t mean, in the sense of “shutting up,” but of “confirming,” or “ratifying,” and in a sense, “finishing” it. The fulfillment of the predictions connected with the First Coming of the Messiah at the time specified in the prophecy gives assurance to us that the other features of the prophecy, notably the 2300 prophetic days, will be as fulfilled just as precisely. For instances where our Lord uses “days” in the sense of meaning “years” in prophetic language (see Num. 14:34; 1Sa. 20:6; Psa. 90:10; Eze. 4:5; and then see Gen. 6:3).
In a side note, the Hebrew word for “prophecy” used here is “nabiy,” and can also be translated as, “a prophet,” or generally, an “inspired man.” If we translated the word as “The Prophet,” referring to “The Messiah,” as spoken of in the following verses (25-27), it would make more sense, prophetically speaking.
6) “to anoint the Most Holy” = Temples were anointed to inaugurate their services (see Exo. 30:23-28; 40:8-11). The Hebrew words translated “Most Holy” are “kodesh ka-doshim,” i.e., “Holy of Holies.” This term is invariably applied to things and not to persons. Never in the Scriptures do we find the words “kodesh ka-doshim” to individuals. They are recognized as applying to the “Holy of Holies” of the Sanctuary only (see Exo. 30:25-28; Lev. 8:10; Num. 7:1). Thus, after the resurrection of Christ, He went into the Holy Place in Heaven (see in the Book of Revelation where He stands “in the midst of the seven candlesticks,” Rev. 2:1 & 7).
Now we need a starting date for the “seventy weeks.” Therefore, we must receive it from Daniel 9:25, which states: “Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks.” Jump there and come back here if you need to.
Now since we have learned that the “seventy weeks” equal from B.C. 457 until 34 A.D., we should know that the “Holy of Holies” of the earthly Sanctuary should not be applied to this prophecy; because it was to be applied to 34 A.D. Therefore, the anointing foretold in this verse points to the dedication of the Heavenly Sanctuary, which would later bring on the inauguration of Christ’s priestly ministry in the Heavenly Temple after His ascension (Heb. 9:21). In other words, the Heavenly Sanctuary had to be anointed before Christ could begin His work as High Priest there. Thus, from 31 A.D., when Christ was crucified (“in the midst of the week,” Dan. 9:27, discussed later), to 34 A.D., when Jewish probation closes and Stephan is stoned, Christ was anointing (or dedicating) the Heavenly Sanctuary for His service there.
To conclude then: “finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy” = Most will argue that none of this happened at the end of the 490-year (70th week) prophecy. However, they are looking at the world and not the spiritual application that was fulfilled by Christ and His ministry upon this earth. Did He not die for our “sins?” Did He not “make reconciliation for iniquity?” See Colossians 1:19-20. Will He not “bring in everlasting righteousness?” Did He not “anoint the Most Holy?”
“to finish the transgression” = The Hebrew word for “transgression,” “pesha’,” suggests the willful violations by an inferior against a superior (for example, see Pro. 28:24). This word also occurs in the Bible with regard to open defiance towards God by humans (see Eze. 2:3). The Sacrifice of Christ, ends “transgression” of His Law, when that Sacrifice is accepted. The gift is there; few will acknowledge It, nor take It. It will finally be fulfilled at the Executive Judgement. See my Bible Study: “JUDGEMENTS, THE THREE FINAL [Under SDA].”
“to make an end of sins” = The Hebrew verb “chatham” carries with it the meaning of “to seal,” and as such here it means that sin is forgiven. It is a dual prophecy in that when you ask for forgiveness, you are under the blood of Christ. And, when the “Close of Probation” takes place and Satan is finally destroyed, sin will be no more. Also, Christ made “an end of sins” if you accept His gift He gave upon the cross.
“to make reconciliation for iniquity” = Accomplished by Christ on the cross.
“to bring in everlasting righteousness” = The purpose of Christ’s Sacrifice. To be totally accomplished after the Executive Judgement.
“to seal up” = The Hebrew is “H2856; chatham,” meaning, “to seal up, affix a seal; fasten by sealing, establish.” If we go to Job 4:12; 9:7; 33:16; 37:7; and specifically, Jeremiah 32:14, a better understanding and translation here would be “to establish.”
“to seal up the vision and prophecy” = That being of the First Coming of Christ. No more time prophecies of this event would from now on be given.
“to anoint the Most Holy” = This was done when Christ became our High Priest in the Heavenly Sanctuary (see Heb. 8:1).
9:25: NOTE: Before we get started (a little history): Judaism interpretation. It is well known that the current Jewish calendar was constructed by Rabbi Yose Ben Halafta, who died in 160 A.D. He left out 164 years on purpose to make this text (Daniel 9:25) point in prophesy to Simon Bar Kokhba. The Reason? To exclude any references to the true purpose of this prophecy being the prediction of the death of and the Coming of the Messiah (Jesus). Thus, Judaismrejects all the decrees because they First, don’t see or want to acknowledge Messiah in them, and Second, because none of them line up with their interpretation of the destruction of the First Temple around B.C. 586.
Evangelicalism. They go with the 4th decree of B.C. 445, but do not use the 70th week. They only run out to the 69th week. Rapture Theorists (see my Bible Study: RAPTURE THEORY, THE”) and many other Christian denominations of today “(Dispensationalists”), misapply Daniel, Chapter 9, verses 25-27, to a 7-year tribulation theory and the such like. That these verses could have shown the Jewish nation the true appearing of, the crucifixion of (“in the mist of the week”), and the ministry of their Messiah, is to their shame that they missed it. And so the shame continues to this day when Christian denominations refuse to attribute the true meaning of fulfilled prophecy to the ministry and death of Christ in these verses instead of coming up with false assumptions of Rapture theories. And NO, this is not a dual prophecy, for Christ died once and for all.
Both Judaism and Evangelicalism agree with having the third Temple built before Christ Comes. The difference is Judaism believes this will be the setting up of Messiah as “King of kings, and Lord of lords,” and the resetting up of the sacrificial services (since Messiah hasn’t Come yet). While Evangelicalism believes in the FALSE “Rapture Theory,” with after the third Temple is built, they will be raptured, with the Second Coming being 7 years later. None of that makes sense, since they ignore Christ being “cut off,” i.e., crucified “in the midst of the [70th] week,” which they separated from the 69th week. Again, 70 comes after 69, not hundreds of years later. Otherwise, you must make the same time differences between weeks 1 and 2, 2 and 3, 3 and 4, etcetera.
Catholicism uses the 4th decree of B.C. 445 (“Catholic Encyclopedia”), and also separates the 70th week from the 69th. Very silly. Catholicism quotes from Sextus Julius Africanus, an early church historian (160-240 A.D.), to finally get to the end of the 490-year prophecy. But Africanus is unclear as to when the 490-year prophecy ends. At the First or Second Coming of Christ? If he meant the First, then Catholic dates are wrong. If Catholics go with the Second Coming, they must again separate the 69th week from the 70th. Jerome comes along later and adjusts the destruction of the First Temple from 586 to 446 B.C.; basing Nehemiah 2:1, “twentieth year of king Artaxerxes,” as applying. However, we can know that the math still does not work. If we calculate 446 B.C., plus 490 years, it works out to 45 A.D.; way too late for Christ appearing the First time. Thus, Catholicism calls Africanus to the rescue, in that he states that one should not us the sun for calculation, but the moon as the Judaism does. This problem is, if you apply that principle here (in Daniel), you must then apply it to every other place in the Scriptures, which Catholicism is admittedly unwilling to do. However, by using the Luner adjusted calendar, the 483-year lunar prophecy would be 490 solar years, bring the First Coming of Christ to 36 A.D.
“going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem” = Judaism ignores all the decrees. Catholicism and Evangelicalism both accept the 4th decree.
Three (3) decrees dealing with the repatriation of the Jewish Nation are recorded in the Book of Ezra:
The first (1) is in the first year of Cyrus, about B.C. 537/538 (Ezra 1:1-4, see also Isa. 44:28 and 2Ch. 36:22-23). This decree allowed the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. It did not include full autonomy to the Jews as a state. It also marked the end of the Babylonian captivity.
The second (2) is in the reign of Darius I (Darius Hystaspes) in B.C. 520 (Ezra 6:1-12). In Darius the Great’s decree, he granted permission to the Jews to finish the Temple, which was dedicated four years later in B.C. 516. In their decrees, neither Cyrus nor Darius I, made any genuine provision for the restoration of the civil state as a complete unit, and only a restoration of both, could the religious and the civil government be fulfilled as promised in the prophecy of Daniel (“restore and to build”).
The third (3) decree of the seventh-year reign of Artaxerxes Longimanus (B.C. 457; see PK:607 & 698) was the first to give the Jewish state full autonomy, subject to Persian over-lordship (Ezra 7:1-26, verses 6-14 being specific to this subject). This is also confirmed, in that, in the Bible, only this decree is followed by thanksgiving and praises to God for influencing the king (Ezra 7:27-28). Another indicator is Isaiah 1:26, where God states that He would “restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors.” See Ezra 7:25. This gives the authority to execute laws. Something the other decrees did not address.
Note: Of all these decrees, only the Hebrew word “Devar,” “H1697,” is used in Daniel 9:2 & 25, preceding the “commandment.” So also is “Devar” used in the third decree of Artaxerxes in Ezra 7:11. Thus, this is the true and only decree that matches to the proper decree we should be looking for, for the fulfilment of this prophecy. The very definition of a government is the ability to define and enforce its own laws. This is the only decree to fulfil these requirements. See Ezra 7:25-26. Also, Isaiah 1:26 teaches us that even Israels “judges” and “counsellors” will be restored. That only occurs with this particular decree.
There is a fourth (4) decree in Nehemiah 2:1-8, which is Artaxerxes Longimanus second decree (B.C. 444/445; 20th year of his reign), which allowed for the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s city walls, but does not fulfill both requirements.
Note: In actuality, this was just Artaxerxes allowing Nehemiah to go help with Artaxerxes first decree. Thus, we should not even consider this to be a full-on decree.
Furthermore, only with the B.C. 457 date as a starting point do the seventy weeks (that is, 490 years) reach to the time of Christ, the “Messiah, the Prince,” of Daniel 9:25-27. No matter which decrees you accept or favor, it MUST line up with the timing of Messiah’s ministry.
According to Flavius Josephus, in his work, “Antiquities,” 15.380, he records, “And now Herod, in the eighteenth year of his reign, and after the acts already mentioned, undertook a very great work, that is, to build of himself the Temple of God.” This can be calculated. Herod’s accession year was B.C. 39. Therefore, his year one Regnal year would have been B.C. 38, making his Regnal 18th year as being B.C. 20. Then if we go to John 2:20, we learn that 46 years later is when Christ’s ministry began. Since Historians have no zero-year calculation, this brings us to 27 A.D. Thus, our needed, matching decree, must extend to and not exceed somewhere within those parameters.
To establish the date of B.C. 457 the Astronomical Tablet of Nebuchadnezzar’s 37th year is used. Among the thousands of public and private documents, written on clay tablets that have been unearthed by archeologists in Mesopotamia, two astronomical texts are of outstanding importance to chronology, for they fix the B.C. dating of the reigns of Nebuchadnezzar II and Cambyses, respectively. The one most valuable for the later period of the Hebrew kings is concerned with the 37th year of Nebuchadnezzar. It contains a series of observational data on the positions of various heavenly bodies throughout a complete year, running from Nisan 1, year 37, to Nisan 1, year 38 of the reign. Modern astronomers who have checked this information by astronomical computation say that the combination of data for the sun, moon and planets, which all move in differing cycles, cannot be duplicated in any other year within centuries, if ever.
Thus, Nebuchadnezzar’s 37th regnal year is fixed beyond all doubt at B.C. 568/567; and all other years in his reign are established also: the 1st year was B.C. 604/603 and the 7th year, in which he captured Jehoiachin, was B.C. 598/597. Since there are several Biblical synchronisms with Nebuchadnezzar’s reign, the end of the kingdom of Judah is anchored to this B.C. dating (do you see the hand of God in this?).
Also, the synchronisms between the Hebrew kings and Assyrian rulers must be located by means of Assyrian chronological lists which are linked with Nebuchadnezzar’s reign through the Ding list known as “Ptolemy’s Canon” (Ptolemy’s Canon is fixed by eclipses). It is however, better known by its Arabic title, the “Almagest,” because it was preserved for posterity by the Arab civilization and was the authoritative treatise on astronomy for 1,400 years, until superseded by the theory set forth by Copernicus, containing data for numerous eclipses and other celestial phenomena.
The Babylonian cuneiform tablet, labeled “BM32234,” in the British museum, is dated to the 14th or 18th day of the 5th month in the 21st regnal year of king Xerxes; which belongs to a class of astronomical records known as “18-year texts,” or “Saros texts.” The precise astronomical data preserved on the tablet allows scholars to fix it date to B.C. 465. Most strikingly, the text on the tablet includes the entry, “Month V 14 (+x): Xerxes was murdered by his son.” This notation not only confirms that Xerxes ruled for 21 years, but also that his final regnal year was B.C. 465; corroborating historical accounts of his assassination and succession of Artaxerxes in B.C. 464 (his regnal year of ascension); where seven years later (Ezra 7:7) he decrees the restoration of Jerusalem; equaling B.C. 457. See also tablets “BM32299,” dated from B.C. 463 to B.C. 392; and tablet “BM45674,” dated from B.C. 463 to B.C. 392 also, which alien to B.C. 457, using the astronomical Venus and lunar data.
“to restore” = The restoration of the Law of God as being the Law of the land in Judea. The Hebrew word for “restore” is, “H7725; shub,” and is not what is normally assumed to mean, “bring back to the way it looked; fix up; rejuvenate.” Rather, the true meaning is to “return or restore to its original owner” when speaking of property, which this is. In other words, give it back to the Jews.
Critics claim that according to Isaiah 44:28, Cyrus decreed that Jerusalem shall be rebuilt. Therefore, that Cyrus’s decree in about B.C. 536 should be the starting point instead of the decree of Artaxerxes I in Ezra, Chapter Seven, which went into effect in B.C. 457.
That Cyrus played an important role in the restoration process ordained by God (Isa. 45:13) is undeniable. However, Cyrus’s work only led to the culmination of the decree of Artaxerxes I. Plus, unlike the earlier decrees of Cyrus (Ezra 1:1-4; 6:3-5) and Darius (Ezra 6:6-12), the decree of Artaxerxes (Ezra 7:11-26) explicitly included the restoration of the city of Jerusalem and not just the Temple itself. Artaxerxes mandated the restoration of Jerusalem as the judicial and civil center of the Jewish people; and not under the total control of the Assyrian empire.
The Critics then continue with that Nehemiah received authorization for rebuilding the walls in Artaxerxes’s twentieth year (Neh., Chp. Two), which would be in B.C. 444. However, the Jews were not at that time given permission to govern their own territory. Thus, this could not be the starting point of the fulfilment of the prophecy.
“Messiah” = The Hebrew word used here for “Messiah,” is “H4899; Messuah” or “mashiach,” and comes from the verb “mashach,” meaning “to anoint,” or “anointed.” Hence, “mashiach” describes an “anointed one” such as the high priest (Lev. 4:3 & 5 & 16), Israel’s kings (1Sa. 24:6 & 10; 2Sa. 19:21), Cyrus (Isa. 45:1), etcetera. However, in this verse, and the context of this verse, only allows this term “meshiach” to be applied to the expected Deliverer Who was to Come (see John 1:41; 4:25-26); the True Anointed One.
That Jesus would show up in 27 A.D. is also established in Ezekiel 1:1-2, here the “thirtieth year” of king Jehoiachin would mean the “jubilee year.” This “fifth year of king Jehoiachin’s captivity” would be around B.C. 594. And 12 jubilees later would equal 27 A.D. See Luke 4:18. Nebuchadnezzar began to reign in B.C. 605, the captivity began in B.C. 597, Ezekiel first vision was in B.C. 594, the jubilee began in B.C. 574, bringing us to 12 jubilees later to 27 A.D. This tells us when the jubilee began and stopped.
Plus, the Romans were very particular in their reckonings. According to Luke 3:1, “in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,” that being 12 A.D. If we add 15 years to 12 A.D., we come up with 27 A.D. for Christ’s baptism. And according to John 2:20, “the Jews [state], Forty and six years was this Temple in building.” If we go to Flavius Josephus work, “Antiquities,” 15.380, states that in the “eighteenth year of his [Herod’s] reign,” thus giving us that Herod’s accession year was B.C. 39, with his regnal year being B.C. 38, and 18 years later would be B.C. 20, adding “the Jews, Forty and six years,” (no zero year), brings us to 27 A.D.
“seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks” = Daniel predicted that the long-looked-for Prince Messiah would appear at a specified time. To this time Jesus referred when He declared, “The time is fulfilled,” Mark 1:15. Jesus was anointed at the time of His baptism in the autumn of 27 A.D. (see Mat. 3:15; Luke 3:21-22; 4:18; Acts 10:37-38).
According to Matthew 2:1, Jesus was born when Herod was both alive and king. According to Flavius Josephus (37-100 A.D.), born in Jerusalem, in his work, “The Antiquities of the Jews,” he sites many separate accounts and one eye witness of the death of Herod in B.C. 4 (see my Bible Study: “CHRIST, BIRTH MONTH OF”). He also cites a lunar eclipse and a Passover. This eclipse has been astronomically dated to March 13, B.C. 4. I have Jesus’ birth at B.C. 2, if He is about 30 years old when His ministry began. But using this information, just make Christ 32 years old when He begins His ministry if you like. Either way, 27 A.D. works mathematically. Josephus used as his “eye witness” Nicolaus of Damascus, who was a trusted ambassador and historian, who worked in Herod’s court in Herod’s final years.
By contrast, Josephus stated that “Herod died 37 years after he was recognized as king of the Jews by Mark Anthonyand the Roman Senate in 40 BC.” That moves the date to B.C. 3. There were two consuls administering in the Roman Senate at the time of Herod’s appointment. They were Gnaeus Calvinus and Gaius Pollio. With the common practice known then as “Eponymous Dating,” we can know the date they served. According to “The Fasti Capitolini,” which lists all the magistrates with notable events in chronological sequence for B.C. 483 to B.C. 19, we can find when they operated; which was B.C. 40.
Josephus also mentioned that “Herod reigned for 34 years after overthrowing and executing his rival Antigonus,” which occurred in the same year Marcus Agrippa and Caninius Gallus were consuls (B.C. 37). Subtracting 34 from 37 gives us B.C. 3.
BACK TO THE BIBLE. Beginning with the autumn of B.C. 457, when the decree went into effect (69 = 7 + 62; Note, for the Day = a Year principle in Biblical prophecy), we go to First Samuel 20:6 and First Kings 1:1 (see also Gen. 6:3), where “years” is translated as “days,” meaning these are prophetic weeks, or 483 years, which reach to the baptism of Jesus in 27 A.D. If the 483 years had been reckoned from the beginning of B.C. 457, they would have extended to the close of 26 A.D. However, due to the fact that historians (unlike astronomers) never count year zero, this brings us to 27 A.D.; meaning Christ was born in about the year B.C. 2. See my Bible Study: “CHRIST’S BIRTH MONTH.”
Some have been puzzled as to how Christ could begin His work in 27 A.D., when the record says that He was about 30 years of age when He started His public ministry (Luke 3:23). This is due to the fact that when the Christian era was first computed, an error of about four years occurred. That Christ was not born in 1 A.D. is evident from the fact that when He was born Herod the Great was still alive and Herod died in arguably 4 or 1 B.C. (see Mat. 2:13-20). It is argued that Evangelicals want the 1 A.D. date because the calendar is based upon Christ’s birth. However, my B.C. 2 date has nothing to do with that or the 1 A.D. date.
The 27 A.D. date is further established by the fact that Tiberius Caesar (see Luke 3:1) began to reign in 12 A.D., plus Luke’s 15 years = 27 A.D. This is the only thing we really need to focus upon. Ideally, Herod’s death has nothing to do with Christ’s death. It is somewhat relevant to Christ’s birth, because then we can eliminate Lukes (3:23) statement of “about 30,” to exactly whatever.
Why does the Bible separate the “seven weeks” out? It has been estimated that it took “seven years” for Jerusalem to be rebuilt. But mainly, it establishes the beginning of Christ’s ministry (31 A.D.) to the close of probation for the Jewish nation in 34 A.D.
9:26: “after threescore and two weeks” = Don’t forget to add before this 62-week prophecy, the “seven weeks” of Daniel 9:25; totaling the 69 weeks prophecy again; bringing it to the beginning of Christ’s ministry in 27 A.D.
“and the people of the Prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the Sanctuary” = Since the “Prince” is Messiah (see verse 25), then we can understand that God’s people were to recognize that after the “cutting off” of Messiah (see verse 27), the Sanctuary services depicting the Coming Sacrifice of Messiah would no longer be necessary; and therefore were to cease. However, this prophecy takes upon itself even more meaning, in that the Jews (God’s people at that time) did not discontinue the Sanctuary services in acknowledgement that our Lord had sacrificed Himself for us. Therefore, both the “city” of Jerusalem, and the “Sanctuary” housed within it, were destroyed by the occupying Roman army in 70 A.D., and the Sanctuary services have never been able to be re-established again.
“with a flood” = Not of actual water, but spiritually speaking, a “flood” of “people.” We can find other places in the Bible which uses this concept of a “flood;” meaning “people” in Isaiah 8:7-8 & Revelation 17:15. When the Roman army came in and destroyed Jerusalem along with the Sanctuary in 70 A.D., many “people,” or better soldiers, is a well representation of the city being overthrown by a flood of people.
9:26-27: “[26] Messiah be cut off. . . [27] in the midst [31 A.D.] of the week [27 A.D. -- 34 A.D.]” = Christ crucified (see Dan. 11:22). Attempts have been made to make this prophecy a “Dual Prophecy.” However, to have “Messiah be cut off,” or better, “Crucified” again, is un-Biblical and inappropriate to the context and meaning of the text. All Jewish rabbis and Christian denominations have understood the timing and meaning of this text to mean Messiah dies. When that happens/happened is the question. To push it into another time frame or meaning is to “push too hard against the pricks (Acts 9:5 & 26:14).”
The establishment of the 31 A.D. as the date of the crucifixion of Christ should not be argued over. However, most Christian denominations have this date as 33 or 34 A.D. By contrast, there is only one year in history, that even most historians agree upon, that all three of these following characters overlap, and that is the year 31 A.D. Here they are: Pontius Pilot; Herod Antipas [or Herod the Great], and Tiberius Caesar. That all three of these persons cannot be established as overlapping for any other date than 31 A.D., all are in agreement.
Tiberius Caesar’s reign can be calculated by the coins of his day. The coin labeled “RPC, 4270,” identifies the Alpha (A) year (One) of Tiberius as in the 45th Actian year following the “Battle of Actium” in September 2nd, B.C. 31, which is in 14 A.D. Then we have the coin labeled “RPC, 4330,” which identifies the Gamma year (Three) of Tiberius as in the 47th Actian year following the “Battle of Actium” in September 2nd, B.C. 31, which was in 16 A.D. With Luke’s statement of the “fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar,” Luke 3:1, in relation to the “Battle of Actium,” that brings us to 27 A.D., because, with simple math, Tiberius began to reign in 12 A.D. (12 plus 15 = 27).
According to the “Babylonian Chronicle,” “BM 21946,” in relation to “Jubilee Years,” if we go to Ezekiel 1:1-2, we learn, “(1) in the thirtieth year. . . (2) [in] the fifth year of king Jehoiachin’s captivity.” The “fifth year” of “Jehoiachin’s captivity” was around B.C. 594, which had begun around B.C. 597-598, which is the seventh (7th) year of king Nebuchadnezzars Reign. 30 years into the Jubilee cycle brings us to about B.C. 574. If we use Luke 4:18 as Christ claiming this to be a Jubilee year, that is 12 cycles later, bringing us to 27 A.D.
“but not for Himself” = In other words, “Not only for Himself.” Christ is our perfect sacrifice for our sins. He died for us.
9:27: “He” = That the “Messiah” is still the “He,” or the subject here, and the main theme throughout our Bibles, should not be disputed. Nor should it be argued here that the “He” is anyone else. The “He” can only be referring to the “Messiah” and not another entity, To make the “He” refer to anyone else is only argued by Rapture theorists; which comes from their false interpretations and dual applications of Daniel 9:24-27. To ignore Christ being crucified “in the midst of the week,” and make the 7 years apply to a future event is out of line.
Also, according to Luke 19:44, the Jewish nation should have known from this prophecy “the time of thy visitation,” that their long-looked-for Messiah was near. And according to Luke 19:44, Jesus will hold them accountable for not having known. Therefore, let us not apply this prophecy for any other event (such as all the “Rapture Theories” out there; or the “Tribulation” time period theories out there), other than the First Coming of our Messiah.
“He [Christ] shall confirm the covenant with many” = A more literal translation would be, “He will make a strong covenant.” And the fulfillment of this statement is in the New Covenant firmly established through and by the blood of Christ (see Mat. 26:28 and Luke 22:20). Notice, Christ does not “confirm the covenant with” all, for not “all” accept Christ as their sacrifice for their sins.
“confirm the covenant” = According to Romans 15:8, the “promises” referred to there, are those “confirmed” here, and are those particularly which related to the Coming of the Messiah. The clearest determinant that Christ, the Messiah, is meant here, can be found unmistakenly in Galatians 3:17.
“midst” = Hebrew, “chasi,” meaning either “middle” (Exo. 27:5; 38:4; etcetera) or “half” (Exo. 24:6; 25:10 & 17; etcetera). This “midst of the week,” and verse 26’s, “shall Messiah be cut off,” lines up perfectly for Christ’s crucifixion in the Passover season in the spring of 31 A.D., 3 1/2 years after the baptism of Christ in the autumn of 27 A.D. The 31 A.D. crucifixion of Christ should be confirmed astronomically by the Passover of that year falling on a Sabbath (Saturday), making it a “High Sabbath” as would be required. However, this has yet to be established astronomically.
For religious organizations to move the 70th week away from the 69th week (70 has always followed 69 when I was in school) is utterly ridiculous. The 70th week is obviously the ministry of Christ, in which He was “cut off” in the “midst” of that 70th week. But to attempt to place this 70th week as a tribulation week sometime after 2000 A.D. is outrageously dumb. Why in their minds does 69 & 68 & 67 & 66 & 65, etcetera, follow in successive order for these religious zealots, but the 70th week is sometime in the future? Plus, by moving it anywhere other than where it belongs, has Christ crucified again “in the midst of the week,” and just as the Jews could not know the timing of Messiah their prince, so denominations today make this prophecy of non-effect by making it a tribulation period; ignoring that Christ would have to be crucified again in the “midst” of it.
“week” = The Hebrew here is, “shabua,” and literally means, “seven years.” For a day equaling a year Biblical principle (Day = Year), see Genesis 6:3; Numbers 14:34; First Samuel 20:6; First Kings 1:1; Psalm 90:10; Ezekiel 4:5-6; Revelation 11:9.
“[327] The ‘week’ here brought to view is the last one of the seventy; it is the last seven years of the period allotted especially to the Jews. During this time, extending from 27 A.D. to 34 A.D., Christ, at first in person and afterward by His disciples, extended the gospel invitation especially to the Jews. . . [328] In 31 A.D., three and a half years after His baptism, our Lord was crucified.” GC:327-328.
“He shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease” = 31 A.D. See Mark 15:37-38; Hebrews 8:13; 10:10-12. Jesus brings the sacrificial system to an end -- in the sense that it no longer has any more prophetic significance -- by offering Himself as the final and perfect Sacrifice of the New Covenant, thus avoiding the need for any more animal sacrifices.
“abominations he [Rome] shall make it desolate” = This occurred in 70 A.D., when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem along with the Temple. See Daniel 8:11; 11:31; 12:11; Matthew 23:38; 24:15; Luke 21:20; Revelation 13:14.
However, this has a stronger meaning (dual prophecy). If we understand what our Lord was referring to in Matthew 23:38 & Luke 13:35, i.e., this prophecy here, in that when Israel crucifies and rejects their Messiah, their house would be left unto them “desolate.” In other words, the good news of the Gospel would be given (entrusted) to others, because the Jewish people as a nation will be “cut off” for rejecting their Messiah and not teaching other nations to follow Him. Their time of probation is over.
NOTE: See my Bible Studies: “ISRAEL, THE RETURN OF,” and “ISRAEL’S REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY DOCTRINE.”
“consummation” = The act of “consummating” something is to reach an ultimate goal or end; it is a fulfillment of that event. What “consummation” is referring to here is the earlier word in this sentence -- “confirm.” So what was consummated was previously confirmed, that being the promises of our Lord’s Sacrifice and everything that is tied to it (see Rom. 15:8).
“and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate” = In other words, “and that [being] determined,” once this, the sacrifice of our Lord is accomplished or fulfilled, it “shall be poured upon the desolate.” “Desolate” is in reference to a people who were devoid of hope. But now, through the Sacrifice of their Lord, they shall receive the pouring out of His salvation, freely offered, freely given. In that context it could also be referring to not only Jews, but mostly Gentiles. By contrast, Jewish rabbis have always associated this prophecy to refer to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. as mentioned by Luke in 21:20 & 24. Once again, they miss the point of this entire passage (Dan. 9:24-27), the Coming and Sacrifice of their promised Messiah.

CHAPTER TEN
10:1: “Persia” = Persia.
10:2-3: “three full weeks” = “While Satan was striving to influence the highest powers in the kingdom of Medo-Persia to show disfavor to God’s people, angels worked in behalf of the exiles. The controversy was one in which all Heaven was interested. Through the prophet Daniel we are given a glimpse of this mighty struggle between the forces of good and the forces of evil. For three weeks Gabriel wrestled with the powers of darkness, seeking to counteract the influences at work on the mind of Cyrus; and before the contest closed, Christ Himself came to Gabriel’s aid.” PP:571-572.
10:5-6: “a certain man clothed” = “This description is similar to that given by John when Christ was revealed to him upon the isle of Patmos. No less a personage than the Son of God appeared to Daniel.” BS:42; RH, February 8,1881.
10:8: “this great vision” = “And when at a later time the Son of God appeared in answer to his prayers to give him instruction, he declares, {verse 8 quoted}.” 4SP:302.
10:9: “heard I the voice” = This is a new voice and not Christ’s, for this voice was “now sent,” verse 11, to Daniel. This is none other than the angel Gabriel, for Christ would not have been “withstood,” verse 13, by Satan.
“Gabriel then appeared to the prophet, and thus addressed him;” RH, February 8, 1881.
10:13: “Prince of of the kingdom of Persia” = Satan.
“For three weeks Gabriel wrestled with the powers of darkness, seeking to counteract the influences at work on the mind of Cyrus; and before the contest closed, Christ Himself came to Gabriel’s aid.” PK:572.
“Michael” = Christ (see DA:99). See my Bible Study: “Michael,” & Daniel 10:21; 12:1. Michael literally means, “Who is like God?” Note, in question form.
“Michael, one of the chief princes” = Since “Michael” is Christ, He is not “one of the chief princes,” He is, “The Chief Prince.” A more literal translation would read, ‘Michael, One in rank, at the head.” The three Hebrew words involved are: “echad,” meaning, “one (as an original), first;” and “rishon rishon,” meaning, “first in rank;” and “sar,” meaning, “head person; captain.” The main point to consider would be that this phase is speaking singular, not plural, i.e., the mistranslation, “princes.” Thus, this Michael IS The Chief of the princes, NOT one of them. More literally, “The Chief Prince.”
An example of “echad” meaning only “one,” as in the “only one of a kind,” is found in Deuteronomy 6:4: “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one [“echad”] LORD.” It can also mean “first in rank,” depending upon context of course, as in Genesis 2:11; Exodus 28:17; Etcetera.
10:20: “prince of Persia. . . Grecia” = Satan.
10:21: “Michael your Prince” = Christ (see DA:99). See my Bible Study: “MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL,” & Daniel 10:21; 12:1.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
11:ALL: That this Chapter has more of a spiritual application (although the historical is quite enlightening and true to course) has yet to be even more discovered.
“The prophecy of the Eleventh Chapter of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment.” T9:14.
11:1: “I. . . I” = I believe this to be the same personage of Daniel, Chapter 10. According to Daniel 10:11 this personage states, “am I now sent,” meaning some other personage sent him. And according to Daniel 10:13, “the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me,” meaning this could not be Christ (Michael, see my Bible Study, “MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL.”), but most likely the angel Gabriel.
“Darius the Mede” = Cyaxares II, uncle of Cyrus.
“him” = Daniel.
11:2: “three kings in Persia” = “Babylon was besieged by Cyrus, nephew of Darius the Mede, and commanding general of the combined armies of the Medes and Persians.” PK:523.
The current reign of Cyrus will shortly come to an end, and three more kings will arise to rule over the kingdom, as well. Within just four years (by B.C. 530) the next king, Cambyses, will begin to reign (B.C. 530-522). His reign will last for about eight full years before he too will be replaced by another king, False Smerdis (also known as Gaumata/Pseudo-Smerdis/Sphendadates) who takes the throne (B.C. 522) by impersonating a member of the ruling family and only reigns a few months.
The next king, Darius I (B.C. 522-486), crushes him and will remain for 36 years. It is during this time that a “Second Decree” will be given for the nation of Israel to be restored (Ezra 6:12). In a side note, some Bible Commentators do not count False Smerdis (whose Babylonian name was Bardiya), because of the Biblical Hebrew term for “stand up,” verses 2 & 3, which seems clearly to make reference to “endure, establish, confirm, continue, remain, stand firm and stand fast,” of which False Smerdis did not last long. Therefore, they count Cyrus, whereas I do not. It did not mater the length of time for the listing of the Jewish kings, nor do I believe our Lord changes His sequences here. However, most all Commentators list and agree with the same “fourth” king, however they come to that conclusion.
“fourth” = Xerxes (B.C. 486; Biblical name of Ahasuerus, husband of Queen Esther). Through his wealth and power, he will arouse a large army of surrounding nations to march on the growing kingdom of Greece. This in turn will stir up the Grecians to unite themselves in preparation for war. Thus, in B.C. 480 through B.C. 479, at the battles of Salamis and Plataea, the Persians will suffer utter defeat on both land and sea. From that time forward, Greece will continue to grow in strength and power over the ever-decreasing empire of Persia.
“I” = Gabriel. See my Daniel 11:1 Note.
“thee” = Daniel.
11:3: “a mighty king” = Alexander the Great = Greece around B.C. 336-323. On October 1, B.C. 331, at the battle of Gaugamela, the Persian Empire was utterly defeated. That this is the next successive kingdom (Greece) has already been confirmed in the Book of Daniel, Chapters 2, 7, 8, & 9. However, an even more convincing statement to the fact that this is speaking of Greece is found in Daniel 10:20: “I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.”
11:4: “divided toward the four winds” = Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus, and Ptolemy. Specifically, Cassandertakes the far West (Macedonia and Greece), Lysimachus the North (Thrace and portions of Asia Minor), Seleucus the East (Syria and Mesopotamia), and Ptolemy the South (Egypt). See Daniel 7:6; 8:8, 22.
Alexander the Great, in June of B.C. 323, at the age of 32, dies. His kingdom is broken up between four generals. Having exhausted his army, his supplies, and his own life, he becomes sick until death. Part of his sadness comes from a well- known statement being expressed, “that he had no other kingdoms to concur.” However, before he dies, he will declare that “his kingdom is to be given to the strongest.” This final declaration will cause a continual division and strife throughout the remainder of the Grecian period (the four generals).
“not to his posterity” = Alexander the Great had no children to pass the kingdom to. Further concluding that this prophecy is about Alexander.
Important Spiritual Note: It is important to note that at this point most Bible Commentators can basically agree upon the following historical events associated with who, and which is, the “king of the north,” and the “king of the south.” However, what must be understood spiritually is that Israel (God’s people) are always in the middle of these struggles between any of these kings. Thus, a true representation would be, as I later mention in my Daniel 11:40-41 note: “Wherefore, if we consider Psalm 48:2 and Isaiah 14:13, they explain that our God sits in the ‘north,’ while the south would be the opposite of ‘north,’ therefore, opposed to God, or better, Satan.”
11:5: “king of the south” = Ptolemy I, around B.C. 323-282 = Egypt.
“one of his princes” = Seleucus I Nicator. Specifically, Seleucus will ultimately become the stronger, as his territory will greatly expand to include the north. For it will come to pass, that before the establishment of the four territories, Seleucus will temporarily lose his claim to the eastern portion by another rival and take refuge with Ptolemy, his friend and king of the south. There he will be restored to his special status and be given an army and power once again. This will enable him to return and conquer his rival in the east, where he will fully be able to establish the fourth portion of the kingdom. Yet, within a short time, Seleucus will also turn against Lysimachus of the north and will conquer his territory, as well. And from that point on, there will begin a contentious rivalry between the king of the north and the king of the south.
11:6: “they shall join themselves together” = Syria and Egypt, Antiochus II Theos (grandson of Seleucus) and Ptolemy II Philadelphus, B.C. 285-246 (son of Ptolemy I). Through an effort to make peace, this results in the marriage of Antiochus II Theos to Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy II Philadelphus. Approximately B.C. 261 -- B.C. 246.
“king’s daughter” = Ptolemy II Philadelphus’s daughter Berenice.
“south” = Egypt, Antiochus II Theos.
“king” = Seleucus.
“king of the north” = Syria = Seleucus.
“neither shall he stand” = Antiochus II Theos dies.
“nor his arm” = A better translation would be, “seed” = Offspring; which is later killed.
“she shall be given up” = Berenice killed. Antiochus II Theos recalled his former wife Laodice and her children, and she, fearing that he might recall Berenice, caused him to be poisoned and her to be murdered, and set her son Callinicos upon the throne.
“he that begat her” = The “he” = Ptolemy II Philadelphus; “her” = Berenice.
“he that strengthened her” = Antiochus II Theos attempts to strengthen Berenice. Antiochus II was already married at that time and will have to divorce his current wife, Laodice, to complete the alliance mentioned above. This will result in even further strife between them all. Although Berenice will bare her husband Antiochus II Theos a son, their marriage will not last, and Laodice will have her revenge. In the end, Antiochus II, Berenice, their son, and all who supported them in this union will be destroyed.
11:7: “her roots” = Berenice’s offspring.
“one stand up” = Ptolemy III, the brother of Berenice, in approximately B.C. 246-225.
“king of the north” = Seleucus II, B.C. 246-225 = Syria. Ptolemy III comes to avenge his sister Berenice’s death by invading the king of the north, Seleucus II. He will lead his armies deep into the regions of Mesopotamia, dominating all the Mediterranean seaports along the way.
11:8: “he” = Ptolemy III.
“king of the north” = Seleucus II, B.C. 246-225 = Syria.
11:9: “king of the south” = This passage should read: “So the king of the north [Syria, Seleucids II, B.C. 225-223]shall come into his [Egypt’s, Ptolemy III, B.C. 246-221] kingdom, the king of the south [Egypt, Ptolemy III, B.C. 246-221], and shall return into his [Seleucids II] own land [Syria].” Seleucids II is defeated by Ptolemy III.
11:10: “his” = Seleucids II.
“sons” = Seleucus III, B.C. 225-223 and Antiochus III the Great, B.C. 223-187.
“one. . . he. . . his” = Antiochus III the Great, in approximately B.C. 223-187.
Specifically, his two sons try once again to conquer the king of the south [Ptolemy VI, B.C. 221-203]. Though his first son [Seleucus III] will only reign two years and fail to penetrate the southern kingdom, Antiochus III the Great will eventually succeed, retaking Seleucia, the port of Antioch, passing through into the land of Egypt. Then he [Antiochus III the Great] will seek his revenge, leading his strong army to the very fortress of Ptolemy IV himself.
11:11: “king of the south” = Egypt = Ptolemy IV, B.C. 221-203.
“him. . . king of the north. . . he” = Syria = Antiochus III, B.C. 223-187.
“his” = Egypt.
Specifically, Ptolemy IV gathers his army to go out and fight against this invasion of Antiochus III. And although Antiochus III unifies the entire strength of his army of 70,000 men, he will still end up defeated by the hand of Ptolemy IV at the battle of Raphia, on June 27, B.C. 217.
11:12: “he. . . his. . . he. . . he shall not be strengthened by it” = All of these apply to Ptolemy IV, in approximately B.C. 221-203 = Egypt. Having overthrown the entire army of Antiochus III, along with killing 10,000 soldiers and capturing 4,000, yet he gains no ground.
11:13: “king of the north” = Syria = Antiochus III, in approximately B.C. 223-187.
“certain years” = Approximately B.C. 217-201.
Specifically, Antiochus III the Great, by B.C. 201, finally prevails against the kingdom of the south and its new king, Ptolemy V, in B.C. 203-181.
11:14: “in those times” = Roman rule, in approximately B.C. 176 -- B.C. 164. Specifically, Phillip V of Macedonia takes advantage Ptolemy V while he is weekend and divides and spoils even more of Ptolemy V’s (Egypt) country.
Bible students have typically put Greece as ending in B.C. 168, at the battle of Pydna, where the Greeks basically knew their days were numbered. However, secular history seems to date the full rise of Rome more around B.C. 50, during what is known as the “Glory Days” of Julius Caesar. It was during his rise in B.C. 64 that history again bares record of the final fall of the Grecian king (the king of the north), Antiochus the XIII, of Syria.
“king of the south” = Ptolemy V, in approximately B.C. 203-181 (boy king who began to reign at the age of 5) = Egypt.
“robbers of Thy people” = Jewish informers. Other Bible versions translate this passage as, “the violent men from among your own people.” Within thirty years a new king will sit on the throne in Syria, Antiochus IV (Epiphanes), who will also suppress the people of God, through idolatry and pagan sacrifices. Some of the “violent men from among the Jews,” namely the Maccabees (Mattathias, Judas, and Jonathan), will turn and revolt against Antiochus IV Epiphanies. See my Bible Study: “ANTIOCHUS IV EPIPHANES.”
11:15: “chosen people” = The Jewish Nation (Hebrews).
“king of the north” = Rome or Syria = Antiochus IV Epiphanies, or Demetrius I, in approximately B.C. 162-150. More likely the “king of the north” applies to the new king of Syria, Demetrius I, who come to the throne and reestablishes his territory. He leads an army and clears out the sacred strongholds of the remaining Jewish rebels. He also fights against the encampments of the Cappadocians and reoccupies the regions of Babylonia. He is called “Soter,” meaning, “The Savior of the Greeks.” It is at this point in history that no army of the southern kingdom (Egypt) will ever again have the power or strength to stand against the north.
“south” = Ptolemy VII, in approximately B.C. 181-145.
11:16: “he. . . his. . . him. . . he. . . his” = Julius Caesar = Pagan Rome. It might be argued by some that Syria was technically taken by Pompey the Great, in B.C. 63. Yet, in referring once again to the Hebrew meaning for “by his hand,” we discover that this is still in complete harmony with that of his fellowship, borders, state, dominion, and power of Rome, and that Julius Caesar is the one who stands “in the glorious land.”
“him” = The first “him” = Syria.
A more accurately rendering would be, “But he [Julius Caesar] who comes after him [Demetrius, called Soter, B.C. 187[?]-150, king of Syria] will do and accomplish all which is according to his own will and purpose.”
“stand in the glorious land” = Pagan Rome in Palestine (see Dan. 8:9).
11:17: “He. . . his. . . his. . . him. . . he. . . him. . . his. . . him” = Julius Caesar. In B.C. 60, Julius Caesar will join himself together with two other prominent men, Pompey and Crassus, in a threefold union called the “First Triumvirate.” Thus, his strength and power will continue to grow. As an added attempt to secure his position, he will give his daughter Julia in marriage to Pompey. But this union will not last. For within just a few short years, after having her life marred for mere political gain, Julia will die in B.C. 54. Crassus, too, will die the very next year. Thus, he will have to forge a new way in continuing his rise of power, as his advantage with Pompey will be broken forever.
“upright ones” = The Hebrews. According to “John Gill’s Commentary on the Bible,” One’s “which Antiochus approved of; and had now a great opinion of them, and had bestowed many favours upon them, as before observed; wherefore he might take some of them, and they might choose to go with him on this expedition, and especially to assist in his intended agreement with the king of Egypt, and the marriage of his daughter to him.”
“he” = The last “he” = Egypt = Ptolemy Auletes. Julius Caesar ultimately forces Pompey into defeat, for after fleeing to Egypt, Pompey will be slain on September 28, B.C. 48.
“daughter of women” = Cleopatra = Julius Caesar’s daughter. He hopes to make an alliance with Ptolemy but see below.
“she shall not stand on his side, neither be for him” = Cleopatra falls in love with Pompey and Egypt and does not support Julius Caesar.
11:18: “he. . . [first] his. . . him. . . him” = Julius Caesar.
“prince. . . his. . . his. . . [last] he” = Pharnaces I. Pharnaces I ascended to the throne definitely before B.C. 183 (the date cannot be fixed for sure). He was of Persian and Greek ancestry, and the son of King Mithridates III of Pontus, and his wife was Laodice, of whom he succeeded on the throne (refer to Justin, Epitome Of Pompeius Trogus, xxxviii. 5, 6). Pharnaces I had two siblings; a brother named Mithridates IV of Pontus, and a sister who was also calledLaodice. Both of these succeeded him on the throne (Refer to McGing, in his work, “The Foreign Policy Of Mithridates VI Eupator, King of Pontus,” page 90).
11:19: “he. . . his. . . his. . . he” = Pagan Rome = Julius Caesar.
“fall, and not be found” = Julius Caesar assassinated on March 15, in B.C. 44.
11:20: “his” = Julius Caesar.
“raiser of taxes. . . he” = Caesar Augustus (real name Octavius, grandnephew of Julius Caesar) in B.C. 4, when our Lord is born (see Luke 2:1 & Acts 5:37). See my Bible Study: “CHRIST’S BIRTH MONTH.”
“but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle” = Caesar Augustus died peacefully on his bed in Nola, August 19, 14 A.D.
Important Biblical Timeline Note: It is this verse and verse 22 that let us know that we are on track as far as the history of these verses go, for they line up perfectly with the events of our Lord’s First Coming transactions upon this earth.
11:21: “his” = Caesar Augustus.
“vile person. . . he” = Caesar Augustus’ adopted son, Tiberius (Claudius Nero) Caesar.
Note: Christ is crucified during this time period.
“they” = The Roman hierarchy.
11:22: “they. . . shall be broken” = Jews subdued by Pagan Rome. The “shall be broken” most likely has a better reference to Christ being crucified in 31 A.D.
“him” = Tiberius (Claudius Nero) Caesar.
“also the Prince of the Covenant” = CHRIST CRUCIFIED 31 A.D. See Daniel 9:26. THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT EVENT, BECAUSE IT GIVES US A “MARKER,” INFORMING US THAT THE HISTORY WE HAVE SKETCHED OUT SO FAR IS CORRECT.
That this is none other than the Messiah, the Christ, we can know this from Daniel 9:27, which tells us Jesus “shall confirm the Covenant.” And according to Hebrews 9:22, “without shedding of blood” there is no ratification of the “Covenant.” Therefore again, we can know this to be speaking of Messiah. In the “Last Supper” scene, Jesus, speaking of the symbolism of the wine, He states, “this is My blood of the New Testament,” Testament being/meaning also “Covenant.” Mattew 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20; First Corinthians 11:25.
Plus, in a side note, this is presenting a future event, after the death of Messiah, which means it is referring to the “New Covenant” of having God’s Laws written in your heart (Jer. 31:31-33) and not the Old Covenant. If you believe it refers to both, I have no problem with that because you are at least agreeing that the “New Covenant” is involved.
From “Albert Barns Notes On The Bible” we read: “There has been some diversity of opinion as to who is meant by ‘the prince of the covenant’ here. Many suppose that it is the high priest of the Jews, as being the chief prince or ruler under the ‘covenant’ which God made with them, or among the ‘covenant’ people. But this appellation is not elsewhere given to the Jewish high priest, nor is it such as could with much propriety be applied to him.”
Barns goes on to believe it refers “to the king of Egypt;” along with others. To miss here the identity of Jesus as “the Prince of the Covenant,” is to then stray away from the true identification going forward of the “little horn.”
11:23: “after the league made with him” = From “Albert Barns Notes On The Bible:” “A treaty of peace and concord. The great subject of contention between the kings of Syria and Egypt was the possession of Coelo-Syria and Palestine [the first “he”]. This they often endeavored to settle by conquest as each of them claimed that in the original partition of the empire of Alexander this portion of the empire fell to himself; and often they endeavored to settle it by treaty. Consequently this region was constantly passing from one to the other, and was also the seat of frequent wars. The ‘league’ here referred to seems to have been that respecting this country -- file successive promises which had been made to the king of Egypt that Coelo-Syria and Palestine should be made over to him. These provinces had been secured to Ptolemy Lagus by the treaty made 301 b.c., and they had been again pledged by Antiochus the Great, in dowry, when his daughter Cleopatra should be made queen of Egypt. -- Jahn, ‘Heb. Commonwealth,’ p. 260.”
“him. . . [last] he” = Tiberius (Claudius Nero) Caesar or Antiochus Epiphanes = Pagan Rome.
“he shall work deceitfully” = This first “he” = the Jews (see above). Antiochus Epiphanes, however, was by no means disposed to confirm this grant, and hence, the wars in which he was involved with the Egyptians.
From “Albert Barns Notes On The Bible:” “In reference to the covenant or treaty above referred to. He shall endeavor to evade its claims; he shall refuse to comply with its conditions; he shall not deliver up the provinces according to the terms of the compact. The history accords exactly with this, for he did not intend to comply with the terms of the treaty, but sought every means to evade it, and finally waged a succession of bloody wars with Egypt. In reference to the terms of this treaty, and to secure their respective interests, both parties sent ambassadors to Rome to urge their claims before the Roman Senate. -- Polybius, ‘Legat.’ Sections 78, 82; Jerome, ‘Com. in loc.’ As soon as Ptolemy Philometor had reached his fourteenth year, he was solemnly invested with the government; and ambassadors from all surrounding countries came to congratulate him on His accession to the throne. ‘On this occasion Antiochus sent to Egypt Apollonius, the son of Mnestheus, apparently to congratulate the king on his coronation, but with the real intention of sounding the purposes of the Egyptian court. When Apollonius, on has return, informed Antiochus that he was viewed as an enemy by the Egyptians, he immediately sailed to Joppa to survey his frontiers toward Egypt, and to put them in a state of defense.’ -- Jahn, ‘Heb. Commonwealth’ p. 260; 2 Macc. 4:21.
“The purpose of Antiochus was undoubtedly not to surrender Coelo-Syria and Palestine according to the treaties which had been made; and yet he designed to secure them if possible without an open rupture, and hence, his arts of diplomacy, or his efforts to evade compliance with the terms of the compact. Even when he had invaded Egypt, and had obtained possession of the king, Ptolemy Philometor, he still ‘pretended that he had come to Egypt solely for the good of king Ptolemy, to set the affairs of his kingdom in order for him; and Ptolemy found it expedient to act as though he really thought him his friend. But he must have seen,’ says Jahn, ‘that Antiochus, with all his professions of friendship, was not unmindful of spoil, for he plundered Egypt in every quarter.’ -- ‘Heb. Commonwealth,’ p. 263.”
11:24: “He. . . he. . . his. . . his. . . he. . . he. . . his” = Tiberius (Claudius Nero) Caesar or Antiochus Epiphanes = Pagan Rome.
11:25: “he. . . his. . . his” = Tiberius (Claudius Nero) Caesar or Antiochus Epiphanes = Pagan Rome.
“king of the south. . . he. . . him” = Mark Antony = Egypt.
11:26: “they [the allies]. . . shall destroy” = Mark Antony’s allies desert him.
“his. . . him. . . his” = Mark Antony.
11:27: “both these kings. . . they” = Augustus Caesar and Mark Antony.
11:28: “he return into his land” = Augustus Caesar = Pagan Rome.
“his. . . he. . . his” = Vespasian (69 A.D. to 79 A.D.).
“against the Holy Covenant” = Against God’s Law (or to stay with history, against God’s people).
It was Vespasian, who when he was a general of the Roman armies (before he became the ruler of Rome), who subjugated Judaea during the Jewish rebellion of 66 A.D. (See Levick, in his work, “Vespasian,” pages 29-38).
11:29: “At the time appointed” = This is very important. What “time appointed” is meant here needs more study. However, it may just simply refer to the put down of the Jewish rebellion in verse 28 (or better, spiritually speaking, God’s people). This also may be (I believe) to be a dual prophecy.
“he” = Vespasian returns to Rome and becomes emperor.
“shall not be as the former, or as the latter” = This is an excellent statement indicating that there is a change in Roman philosophy, i.e., from Pagan Rome to Papal Rome.
11:30: “the ships of Chittim” = Chittim is well known to mean the Roman empire. According to many Bible commentators, who are still back in B.CH.E. dating for historical events, Antiochus was about to besiege Alexandria and was within seven miles of the city when he got word that war-ships were arriving from Rome.
From “Adam Clarke’s Commentary on the Bible,” we learn: Antiochus “heard that ships were arrived there from Rome, with legates from the senate. He went to salute them. They delivered to him the letters of the senate, in which he was commanded, on pain of the displeasure of the Roman people, to put an end to the war against his nephews. Antiochus said he would go and consult his friends; on which Popilius, one of the legates, took his staff, and instantly drew a circle round Antiochus on the sand where he stood, and commanded him not to pass that circle till he had given a definitive answer. Antiochus, intimidated, said, he would do whatever the senate enjoined; and in a few days after began his march, and returned to Syria. This is confirmed by Polybius, Livy, Velleius, Paterculus, Valerius Maximus, and Justin.”
However, more likely this is when the Papacy (Papal Rome) comes to power and does this:
“have indignation against the Holy Covenant” = Against God’s Law. Papal Rome will “think to change times and Laws,” Daniel 7:25. Specifically, Papal Rome, or better, Roman Catholicism will change God’s Law, “times” equaling the day, and “Laws” equaling God’s Law, i.e., the Sabbath Law from Saturday, the seventh-day of the week, to Sunday, “Sun Worship,” to the first day of the week.
11:31: “the abomination that maketh desolate” = See Daniel 8:12; 9:27; 12:11; Matthew 24:15; Mark 13:14; Luke 21:20; Revelation 13:14. Also, see my Bible Study: “ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION, THE.”
“arms shall stand on his part” = We are now moving into the Papal Rome period; whereas the verses before are Pagan Rome period. Clovis of the Franks (France), used his army to help establish the dominance of the Papacy in western Europe in 508 A.D.
“take away the daily sacrifice” = See my explanations in Daniel 8:11 & 12 & 13.
11:32: “by flatteries” = Papal Rome used/uses any method to violate “the covenant,” i.e., God’s Law, corrupted by good words and fair speeches, by gifts and presents; by which people and princes became/become his tools, to do his pleasure, until they themselves become his instruments to seduce others.
“people that do know their God” = Better, that understand God’s Word over man’s word, will resist Papal Rome’s changing of God’s Law.
“and do exploits” = Adding the word “exploits” diminishes away from the true meaning, which is, “keep His Commandments.”
11:33: “they shall fall by the sword” = This has always been and may very well apply to the “Dark Ages.”
“many days” = This has reference to the 1260-year period of Papal Rome supremacy.
11:34: “they shall be holpen with a little help” = Faithful believers flee to the wilderness which helps them stay safe.
11:35: “to the time of the end” = The statement in this verse about “to make them white” means, “make them righteous,” as “white” has always been a symbol of righteousness with our Lord. Thus, I believe this to be speaking of the “Time of Trouble,” spoken of by Daniel (12:1) and Matthew (24:21). However, most time this to the time of the “Reformation.” Here is where we could have a dual prophecy going onward if we are to go with the persecuting power of the “little horn,” i.e., Papal Rome. And or, the “threefold union” in the future.
11:36: “magnify himself above every god” = In Daniel 8:11 the “little horn” exalts himself as high as the “Prince of the host.” Thus, I believe we have now reached into the timing of the “little horn” power coming back to life in the “last days.”
“and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods” = I believe this to be referring to when Satan appears “to be by the throne” (see Dan. 8:12 Note where DS, March 14, 1846; Broadside 1, April 6, 1846; EW:56; ExV:43 is quoted). The reason is because this is the one time when Satan, i.e., Antichrist attempts to sit in the seat of God, claiming to be God, is above every God, i.e., “God of gods.” In other words, he is above Allah, he is above Buddha, et cetera. Therefore, he is exalted above all gods, or anything or one claiming to be a god, i.e., “above every god.”
“shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods” = In Daniel 7:25 the “little horn” speaks pompous words against the Most High. See my Bible Study: “BIBLICAL BLASPHEMY.” This is Satan’s final attempt to seize all he can deceive before the Second Coming of Christ.
11:37: “nor the desire of women” = The Papacy vows a vow of celibacy. Here is “A Brief History of Celibacy in the Catholic Church,” by “FutureChurch.”
“First Century:
Peter, the first pope, and the apostles that Jesus chose were, for the most part, married men. The New Testament implies that women presided at eucharistic meals in the early church.
Second and Third Century:
Age of Gnosticism: light and spirit are good, darkness and material things are evil. A person cannot be married and be perfect. However, most priests were married.
Fourth Century:
306-Council of Elvira, Spain, decree #43: a priest who sleeps with his wife the night before Mass will lose his job.
325-Council of Nicea: decreed that after ordination a priest could not marry. Proclaimed the Nicene Creed.
352-Council of Laodicea: women are not to be ordained. This suggests that before this time there was ordination of women.
385-Pope Siricius left his wife in order to become pope. Decreed that priests may no longer sleep with their wives.
Fifth Century:
401-St. Augustine wrote, Nothing is so powerful in drawing the spirit of a man downwards as the caresses of a woman.
Sixth Century:
567-2nd Council of Tours: any cleric found in bed with his wife would be excommunicated for a year and reduced to the lay state.
580-Pope Pelagius II: his policy was not to bother married priests as long as they did not hand over church property to wives or children.
590-604-Pope Gregory the Great said that all sexual desire is sinful in itself (meaning that sexual desire is intrinsically evil?).
Seventh Century:
France: documents show that the majority of priest were married.
Eighth Century:
St. Boniface reported to the pope that in Germany almost no bishop or priest was celibate.
Ninth Century:
836-Council of Aix-la-Chapelle openly admitted that abortions and infanticide took place in convents and monasteries to cover up activities of uncelibate clerics.
St. Ulrich, a holy bishop, argued from scripture and common sense that the only way to purify the church from the worst excesses of celibacy was to permit priests to marry.
Eleventh Century
1045-Benedict IX dispensed himself from celibacy and resigned in order to marry.
1074-Pope Gregory VII said anyone to be ordained must first pledge celibacy: priests [must] first escape from the clutches of their wives.
1095-Pope Urban II had priests wives sold into slavery, children were abandoned.
Twelfth Century:
1123-Pope Calistus II: First Lateran Council decreed that clerical marriages were invalid.
1139-Pope Innocent II: Second Lateran Council confirmed the previous councils decree.
Fourteenth Century:
Bishop Pelagio complains that women are still ordained and hearing confessions.
Fifteenth Century:
Transition; 50% of priests are married and accepted by the people.
Sixteenth Century:
1545-63-Council of Trent states that celibacy and virginity are superior to marriage.
1517-Martin Luther.
1530-Henry VIII.
Seventeenth Century:
Inquisition. Galileo. Newton.
Eighteenth Century:
1776-American Declaration of Independence.
1789-French Revolution.
Nineteenth Century:
1804-Napoleon.
1882-Darwin.
1847-Marx, Communist Manifesto.
1858-Freud.
1869-First Vatican Council; infallibility of pope.
Twentieth Century:
1930-Pope Pius XI: sex can be good and holy.
1951-Pope Pius XII: married Lutheran pastor ordained catholic priest in Germany.
1962-Pope John XXIII: Vatican Council II; vernacular; marriage is equal to virginity.
1966-Pope Paul VI: celibacy dispensations.
1970s-Ludmilla Javorova and several other Czech women ordained to serve needs of women imprisoned by Communists.
1978-Pope John Paul II: puts a freeze on dispensations.
1983-New Canon Law.
1980-Married Anglican/Episcopal pastors are ordained as catholic priests in the U.S.; also in Canada and England in 1994.”
Thus, you may pick the timing that works best for you; but it must be before 1798 A.D. and after 325 A.D.
“nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all” = Again, regarding verse 36’s Note, in Daniel 8:11, the “little horn” exalts himself even higher than the “Prince of the host.”
11:38: “honour the god of forces” = This is none other than honoring Satan. Through the arm of force, he will be able to pursue and punish to death all those who disobey his will. This is the Roman Papal church persecuting power.
“a god whom his fathers knew not” = The first pope of the Roman Catholic church is said to be Peter. With that in mind; Peter did not know of this “god” whom they worship.
11:39: “divide the land for gain” = The Roman Papal power enriches itself by confiscating righteous people’s lands.
11:40: “at the time of the end” = The rest of this Chapter should be understood in reference to these prophecies being just after “a time, and times, and half a time,” Revelation 12:14, which would be after 1798 A.D. Or better, events just before the “Time of Trouble,” and after the fall of Papal Rome.
“king of the south” & “king of the north” = If we stay with history, the king of the south would be the false prophet Mohammed, who made war on the Greek emperor Heraclius and with amazing rapidity took Egypt, Syria, and many other of Heraclius provinces.
Therefore, the “king of the north” would be the Turks, who were originally Scythians, and they took over what remained of the Grecian empire.
However, I believe we have a clear definition of who these two are in the Book, “The Great Controversy,” pages 268-269: “In many of the nations of Europe the powers that ruled in church and state had for centuries been controlled by Satan through the medium of the Papacy [This would be our “king of the north.”]. But here is brought to view a new manifestation of satanic power [Our “king of the south,” identified later]. [269]
“It had been Rome’s policy, under a profession of reverence for the Bible, to keep it locked up in an unknown tongue and hidden away from the people. Under her rule the witnesses prophesied ‘clothed in sackcloth.’ But another power -- the beast from the bottomless pit -- was to arise to make open, avowed war upon the Word of God.
“The ‘great city’ in whose streets the witnesses are slain, and where their dead bodies lie, is ‘spiritually’ Egypt. Of all nations presented in Bible history, Egypt [equals our “king of the south”] most boldly denied the existence of the living God and resisted His Commands. No monarch ever ventured upon more open and highhanded rebellion against the authority of Heaven than did the king of Egypt. When the message was brought him by Moses, in the name of the Lord, Pharaoh proudly answered: ‘Who is Jehovah, that I should hearken unto His voice to let Israel go? I know not Jehovah, and moreover I will not let Israel go.’ Exodus 5:2, A.R.V. This is atheism [Here we have it, here is our “king of the south”], and the nation [that “nation” being latter identified as France, but for the prophetic future, we are to stay focused upon the point of it being “atheism”] represented by Egypt would give voice to a similar denial of the claims of the living God and would manifest a like spirit of unbelief and defiance.”
Wherefore, if we consider Psalm 48:2 and Isaiah 14:13, they explain that our God sits in the “north,” while the south would be the opposite of “north,” therefore, opposed to God, or better, Satan.
“push” = In verse 40, it is interesting to note that the Hebrew word “nagach,” translated as “push,” in the original Hebrew actually means “to gore.” In addition, the definition to the word “gore” literally means “to receive a bloody wound.” So, in continuing forward with Daniel’s prophetic time line, it would seem fairly clear that this “time of the end” is the period of 1798 A.D., when the Papacy received its deadly wound.
“like a whirlwind” = According to Jeremiah 25:32-33; 30:23-24; 49:46-47, “whirlwind” always has a connection to war.”
“with horsemen” = According to Proverbs 21:31, horses are understood to mean being used in “battle.”
“and with many ships” = According to Second Chronicles 9:21; Psalm 107:23; Proverbs 31:14; “ships” have to do with trade; or economic might.
In 1798-1801, we have the French invasion of Egypt and Syria, in what is known as “The Battle of the Pyramids.” In may 1798, Napoleon’s fleet, comprising of around 36,000 troops departed from Toulon, headed to Alexandria, Egypt, landing on June 28th, defeating the ruling Mamluks and securing control of Cairo, Egypt.
“overflow and pass over” = Meaning domination of all countries. Or better, “every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,” Revelation 14:6.
11:41: “glorious land” = Usually thought of as Israel. Another possibility is that the Hebrew word “tsbiy,” translated as “glorious” here, could be better translated as “beautiful,” and students of the Bible see the rise of the United States of America as being one of those who “escape out of his hand,” and the “beautiful land” as referring to America, which ties into the future light and history of this period that we receive from the Book of Revelation, Chapter 13, which will later “speak as a dragon” and be as “even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.”
Also, after the Cross, God’s people are no longer defined along ethnic and geographical lines. Therefore, the “glorious land” must be a symbolic designation of God’s people spread throughout the world.
Also, after the Cross, God’s people are no longer defined along ethnic and geographical lines. Therefore, the “glorious land” must be a symbolic designation of God’s people spread throughout the world. According to Ezekiel 30:6 & 15, this land is a nation that is blessed. And according to my favorite Bible commentator, “The greatest and most favored nation upon the earth is the United States. A gracious Providence has shielded this country, and poured upon her the choicest of Heaven’s blessings.” 4SP:398.1. Also, “The Lord has done more for the United States than for any other country upon which the sun shines.” MAR:193.1. “Republicanism and Protestantism. These principles are the secret of our power and prosperity as a nation.” 14LtMs, Ms. 51,1899, paragraph 5.
“many countries shall be overthrown” = According to Jeremiah 18:23, people who are “overthrown” are not forgiven of their sins because they remain in them. In other words, for this placement, they receive the Mark of the Beast.
“Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon” = Since “Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon,” no longer exist, this could be referring to God’s Church that will be used of Him to conquer spiritual “Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.” Many will come out of groups once opposed to the truth of God and join God’s people in “the time of the end.” Thus, “the king of the north” could be spiritual Babylon, while the “king of the south” could be spiritual “Egypt,” verse 43. However, continuing in the line of history, this “time of the end” may refer to 1798 A.D., when Rome receives its deadly blow. It can also mean that the anti-Christ takes over many nations (see verse 42).
In reality, these are the people who escape Babylon and join with the keepers of God’s Law. According to Hebrews 12:16, Esau, who is Edom, “sold his birthright,” and Moab and Ammon were conceived out of wine drinking, thus, “fornicators” and “wine bibbers (false doctrine),” see the errors of their ways and “shall escape out of his [Roman Catholicism] hand.” Compare with Revelation 18:4.
Perhaps, we can then interpret the events like this:
(1) The king of the South attacks the king of the North. The French Revolution attempted to eradicate religion and defeat the Papacy, but failed.
(2) The king of the North attacks and defeats the king of the South: the forces of religion headed by the Papacy and its allies will eventually overcome the forces of atheism and will form a coalition with the defeated enemy.
(3) Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon will escape: some of those not counted among God’s true people (Muslims) will join the fold in the last hour.
(4) The king of the North prepares to attack the “glorious land,” but comes to his end: the forces of evil are destroyed, and God’s kingdom is established (Second Coming).
11:43: “he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver” = Anti-Christ controls the worlds monetary systems.
11:44: “tidings out of the east and out of the north” = “Tidings” means “news,” or “information.” If you are staying in line with the “king of the north” being Turkey,” news from the “east” would be from Iran, the Persian empire. And news from the “north” would be from Russia. To bring this up to date, Russia has offered Iran ade in their nuclear program. And according to verse 45, Iran is stopped by Israel and the U.S.A. for attacking “the glorious holy mountain,” Israel, and “none shall help him.” No nation came to the aid of Iran.
However, James White rebuked Uriah Smith for believing “the king of the north” equals “Turkey.” To assert that Turkey is the prophetic “changer of God’s Holy Law,” instead of the clear emphasis Biblically fulfilled by the Papacy, is to stray from the identifications already established.
Consider, if Israel and Islam war with each other, neither nation has faith is Jesus Christ. Thus, to ascribe to either nation a Biblical prophecy concerning the attack upon God’s Holy Law, is to stray from proper identification of the Papacy.
According to Ezekiel 9:1-4 and Revelation 7:2, the “tidings out of the east and. . . north,” would be the sealing message. Here is where God’s people will be sealed. By calling people out of Babylon, the Papacy will be angered and cause them to institute the Death Decree.

11:45: “seas” = Meaning “peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” Revelation 17:2. Compare with Ezekiel 28:2.
“plant the tabernacles of his palace” = The “tabernacles of his palace” refers to his governing powers. The Hebrew word for “tabernacles” is “H168; ohel,” meaning “tent.” Turkey fashions its Mosques and government buildings after “tents.”
However, this is Sanctuary talk again and therefore could be referring to the fact that the “little horn” is once again behind the desecration of God’s Law; “planting” his “Sunday Law” enactment in its place. “Tabernacles” is a place of worship. Whereas, “palace” is a place where kings rule. Thus, what we see here is a “union of church and state.”
“between the seas in the glorious holy mountain” = God’s “glorious Holy Mountain” would be Jerusalem (Isa. 66:20 & Dan. 9:16), which lies “between the seas.” Muslims interpret this as destroying Isreal “From The River To The Sea.”
However, according to Psalms 48:1-2, the “glorious holy mountain” refers to mount Zion. And specifically, in Joel 2:32, “mount Zion” is where “the remnant” are. Thus, this is referring to the group just before probation closes, i.e., the 144,000. Confirmed in Revelation 14:1.
“We may have less to say in some lines, in regard to the Roman power and the papacy, but we should call attention to what the prophets and apostles have written under the inspiration of the Spirit of God. The Holy Spirit has so shaped matters, both in the giving of the prophecy, and in the events portrayed, as to teach that the human agent is to be kept out of sight, hid in Christ, and the Lord God of Heaven and His Law are to be exalted.” Letter 57, 1896; CW 65.1.

CHAPTER TWELVE

12:1: “Michael” = Christ (see Dan. 10:21; DA:99). See my Bible Study: “MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL.”
“stand up” = Close of Probation (see Mat. 24:21; Rev. 8:5). Stand up means, “a new ruler; takes over the kingdom” (see Dan. 11:2 & 3 & 4 & 7 & 20 & 21).
The Hebrew verb used for “stand up” is “amad,” which comes with the connotation of describing an action. It has been used to indicate the evoking of the rise of kings or kingdoms to conquer and rule. But its primary use is a military sense, such that “Michael” acts as a military leader Who protects His people and leads them in a special (spiritual) way. We see the illustration of this in Daniel 8:22, where “four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation,” meaning, a new “kingdom” is taking over. It is clearly then shown that at this point in time Christ will be setting up His eternal “kingdom.” Also confirmed in Daniel 11:2 & 3 & 4 & 7 & 20 & 21.
Lastly, it also can point towards a judgmental setting. As Michael “stands up,” He acts as an advocate in the Heavenly tribunal, being the “Son of Man,” Daniel 7:13, coming before the “Ancient of days,” Daniel 7:13, with and being the “Prince of the host,” Daniel 8:11, and as “Messiah the Prince,” Daniel 9:25.
Therefore, Michael’s “standing up” well represents the military and judicial aspects of His work. He is invested with the power to defeat God’s enemies by closing their probationary period (judgmental aspect), and He has the authority to represent God’s (His) people before His Father in the Heavenly tribunal. In other words, Christ’s ministry in the Heavenly Sanctuary is over and He begins a new ministry; that of taking His place as “Lord of lords, and King of kings,” Revelation 17:14.
“[431] Every case has been decided for life [432] or death. Christ has made the atonement for His people, and blotted out their sins. The number of His subjects is made up; ‘the kingdom and dominion and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven,’ is about to be given to the heirs of salvation, and Jesus is to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
“When He leaves the Sanctuary, darkness covers the inhabitants of the earth. In that fearful time the righteous must live in the sight of a holy God without an intercessor. The restraint which has been upon the wicked is removed, and Satan has entire control of the finally impenitent. The power attending the last warning has enraged them, and their anger is kindled against all who have received the message. The people of God are then plunged into those scenes of affliction and distress described by the prophet as the time of Jacob’s trouble.” 4SP:431-432; GC:614; LDE:265-266.
“Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the Sanctuary above are to stand in the sight of a holy God without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own diligent efforts, they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the Investigative Judgment is going forward in Heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from the Sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting away sin, among God’s people on earth.” RH, January 17, 1907 paragraph 4; GC:425.
“time of trouble” = The “Time of Trouble,” i.e., “Tribulation” of Job 38:23 & Matthew 24:21.
During the “time of trouble” our God promises to protect us (Psa. 27:5; 37:39; 41:1; Isa. 26:20; 33:2).
The “Time of Trouble” is to be “shortened,” Matthew 24:22; Mark 13:20.
“In the time of trouble, just previous to the Coming of Christ, the lives of the righteous will be preserved through the ministration of holy angels. Those who come up to that trying time neglecting to obey God’s Commands, will have no security of their lives. Angels cannot protect them from the wrath of their enemies while they are living in neglect of any known duty, or express Command of Jehovah.” 1SP:176.1.
“Bread and water is all that is promised to the remnant in the time of trouble.” 1SP:224; 3SG:252.
“To stand in defense of truth and righteousness when the majority forsake us, to fight the battles of the Lord when champions are few – this will be our test. At this time we must gather warmth from the coldness of others, courage from their cowardice, and loyalty from their treason.” 5T:136.
“As Satan influenced Esau to march against Jacob, so he will stir up the wicked to destroy God’s people in the time of trouble.” 4SP:435.
“Yet for the elect’s sake, the time of trouble will be shortened.” 4SP:447. (See Rev. 22:11).
“Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human passion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old.” GC:614.
“Thy people shall be delivered” = Second Coming of Christ (see Dan. 2:34; 44-45; 7:22 & 27; 8:25; 12:7).

12:2: “them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake” = The Special Resurrection. Here is my Revelation 1:7 Note: “they also which pierced Him” = This verse covers and gives credence to the Special Resurrection doctrine (see also Dan. 12:2; Mat. 26:64; Mark 14:62). This resurrection covers those who were at the arresting, sentencing, and torture of Christ.
From 1SG:48-49: “[48] Many companies of holy angels, with each a tall commanding angel at their head, were sent to witness the scene. They were to record every act, every insult and cruelty imposed upon the Son of God, and to register every pang of anguish which Jesus should [49] suffer; for the very men should see it all again in living characters.”
From 4SP:454 we read: “Graves are opened, and ‘many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth’ ‘awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.’ {Dan. 12:2.} All who have died in faith under the third angel’s message come forth from the tomb glorified, to hear God’s covenant of peace with those who have kept His Law. ‘They also which pierced Him,’ those that mocked and derided Christ’s dying agonies, and the most violent opposers of His truth and His people, are raised to behold Him in His glory, and to see the honor placed upon the loyal and obedient.”
And from 4SP:460-462 we read: “ ‘And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every freeman, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains, and said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of His wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand?’ {REV. 6:15-17} The derisive jests have ceased. Lying lips are hushed into silence. The clash of arms, the tumult of battle, ‘with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood,’ {Isa. 9:5} is stilled. Naught now is heard but the voice of prayer and the sound of weeping and lamentation. The cry bursts forth from lips so lately scoffing, ‘The great day of His wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?’ The wicked pray to be covered by the rocks of the mountains, rather than meet the face of Him Whom they have despised and rejected. Those who mocked Christ in His humiliation are in that throng. With thrilling power come to their minds the Sufferer’s Words, when, adjured by the high priest, He solemnly declared, ‘Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and Coming in the clouds of Heaven.’ {Mat. 26:64} Now they behold Christ in His glory, and they are yet to see Him sitting on the right hand of power. That voice which penetrates the ear of the dead, [461]
“they know. . . Those who derided His claim to be the Son of God are speechless now. There is the haughty Herodwho jeered at His royal title, and bade the mocking soldiers crown Him king. There are the very men who with impious hands placed upon His form the purple robe, upon His sacred brow the thorny crown, and in His unresisting hand the mimic scepter, and bowed before Him in blasphemous mockery. The men who smote and spit upon the Prince of life, now turn from His piercing gaze, and seek to flee from the overpowering glory of His presence. Those who drove the nails through His hands and feet, the soldier who pierced His side, behold these marks with terror and remorse. With awful distinctness do priests and rulers recall the events of Calvary. With shuddering horror they remember how, wagging their heads in Satanic [462]
“exultation, they exclaimed, ‘He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He be the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him.’ {Mat. 27:42-43} Vividly they recall the Saviour’s parable of the husbandmen who refused to render to their lord the fruit of the vineyard, who abused his servants and slew his son. They remember, too, the sentence which they themselves pronounced: The lord of the vineyard will miserably destroy those wicked men. In the sin and punishment of those unfaithful men, the priests and elders see their own course and their own just doom. And now there rises a cry of mortal agony. Louder than the shout, ‘Crucify Him! crucify Him!’ which rang through the streets of Jerusalem, swells the awful, despairing wail, ‘He is the Son of God! He is the true Messiah!’ They seek to flee from the presence of the King of kings. In the deep caverns of the earth, rent asunder by the warring of the elements, they vainly attempt to hide.”
Note: The rest of the righteous dead are not raised until page 463.
From 1SG:62-63: “[62] They will behold that face again, bright as the noon-day sun, and will seek to flee from before It. Instead of that shout of brutal triumph, in terror they will wail because of Him. Jesus will present His hands with the marks of His crucifixion. The marks of this cruelty He will ever bear. Every print of the nails will tell the story of man’s wonderful redemption, and the dear price that purchased it. The very men who thrust the spear into the side of the Lord of life, will behold the print of the spear, and will lament with deep anguish the part they [63] acted in marring His body.”
Revelation 1:8: “I Am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty” = That this is Jesus Christ, and not the Father speaking (although it could be both; not likely based upon context), can be clearly seen by following the context and sentence structure of the entire passage. If we go to verse 11, we see the same statement without “the Almighty,” discussed later. Then when we go to verses 12 & 13, we can know for certain that this is “the Son of man,” i.e., Jesus. In regard to the statement “the Almighty,” this is also stated of Jesus in Isaiah 9:6. Remember, a better command of the Old Testament will help you better decode the Book of Revelation.
This problem of interpretation arose by insisting that this text is speaking of God the Father, when it was discovered that some manuscripts, which instead of using what most manuscripts inscribe to, which is the use of the Greek word “kurios,” meaning, “Lord,” instead inserting “Theos,” meaning “God,” as adopted by Griesbach, Tittman, and Hahn. However, even a layman can ask the question, “Which God do you mean? God the Father, God the Son, or God the Holy Spirit?” And the only way to answer that correctly is to determine the contextual evidence.
Is this not “The Revelation of Jesus Christ,” Revelation 1:1? Is this not “the testimony of Jesus Christ,” Revelation 1:2? Is this not “from Jesus Christ, Who is the Faithful Witness,” Rev. 1:5? Is it not “Him [that we should be giving the] be glory,” Revelation 1:6? Is it not going to be “He cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see Him,” Revelation 1:7, remembering that no one sees God the Father and lives? Thus, this could only be referring to Jesus Christ.
Why ignore all of these proceeding verses (the context), pointing directly to Jesus Christ as the main Speaker, and then apply it to a different Deity? Verse 9 even continues on with “the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Consider what you may be doing here as did Griesbach, Tittman, and Hahn. Here is my John 14:8 Bible Commentary Note: “shew us the Father” = Philip may not have totally understood what he was doing here with this statement. He was acting just like the Pharisees in Chapter 8, verses 13-29 (especially see verses 13 &19). I’m sure Philip didn’t understand fully what he was doing here, but it is like you or I saying to the clerk, “Let me see the manager.” It’s in a small way, disrespecting the person in front of you.
Revelation 1:9: “companion in tribulation” = The Biblical teaching is that if you have not experienced “tribulation” as a Christian, then you are not a Christian (see John 16:33; Acts 14:22; Rom. 8:17; 2Ti. 1:8). The ultimate purpose of the tribulation period then, is to learn entire dependence upon our Lord.
From AA:574-575 we read: “In the experience of the apostle John under persecution, there is a lesson of wonderful strength and comfort for the Christian. God does not prevent the plottings of wicked men, but He causes their devices to work for good to those who in trial and conflict maintain their faith and loyalty. Often the gospel laborer carries on his work amid storms of persecution, better opposition, and unjust reproach. At such times let him remember that the experience to be gained in the furnace of trial and affliction is worth all the pain it costs. Thus God brings His children near to Him, that He may show them their weakness and His strength. He teaches them to lean on Him. Thus He prepares them to meet emergencies, to fill positions of trust, and to accomplish the great purpose for which their powers were given them.”
See also Matthew 26:64; Mark 14:62; 4SP:454, 460-462. Note that the rest of the righteous are not raised until 4SP:463.
The expression translated as “dust of the earth” in the original language of Daniel 12:2, reads “earth of dust.” This unusual word sequence points back to Genesis 3:19, the only other Biblical passage where the word “earth” precedes the word “dust.” This implies that the death pronouncement made at Adam’s fall will be reversed and death will no longer hold sway. As Paul states: “death is swallowed up in victory,” First Corinthians 15:54.
12:4: “seal the book” = “In the Revelation all the Books of the Bible meet and end. Here is the complement of the Book of Daniel. One is a prophecy; the other a revelation. The book that was sealed is not the Revelation, but the last days.” AA:585.
12:5: “river” = Interestingly, this final scene takes place at the Tigris “river,” or the place of Daniel’s last major vision (Dan. 10:4). However, the word used here is not the common Hebrew word for “river” (as used in Daniel 10:4, “nahar”), but the term “ye’or,” which usually designates a mainstay river, such as the Tigris of Assyria. However, “ye’or” is of Egyptian origin, and as such, it would have more implications towards the “Nile River” of Egypt. This would then remind us of the Exodus and shows us just as the Lord redeems Israel from Egypt, He will redeem His end-time people from the earth.
12:7: “sware by Him” = That this is Jesus doing the “swaring” by the authority of His Father, let’s discover that mankind is not to “sware.” See Matthew 5:33-37; James 5:12. Whereas, Jesus Himself can “sware,” “because He could swear by no greater, He sware by Himself.” Hebrews 6:13. See also Revelation 10:6.
“a time, times, and an half” = 1+2+1/2 = 3 1/2 years = 42 months = 1260 days = 1260 years = 538 A.D. to 1798 A.D. See Daniel 7:25; Revelation 11:2 & 3; 12:6 & 14; 13:5.
“shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people” = God’s people shall be gathered out of all nations where they have been disperse and be delivered.
“shall be finished” = Second Coming (see Dan. 2:34; 44-45; 7:27; 8:25; 12:1).
12:9: “the words are closed up and sealed” = See Revelation 10:6 Note.
12:11: “daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up” = See Daniel 8:11; 9:27; 11:31; Matthew 24:15 Note; Mark 13:14; Luke 21:20; Revelation 13:14 Note.
12:11-12: “a thousand two hundred and ninety days” & “the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days” = In regards to the 1290 days / years, both the 1290 and the 1335 start in 508 A.D. This time period is mentioned in close connection with the “time, times, and an half,” verse 7, or the 1260 days, and the events to occur at the end of these periods are presumably identical. It seems reasonable to understand then, that these two periods cover approximately the same historical era. The excess of the 1290 over the 1260 is probably to be understood in view of the fact that the beginning of the 1290 days is focused on the taking away of the “daily sacrifice,” verse 11, preparatory to the establishment of the “abomination,” of verse 11.
Subtracting 1290 from 1798 we arrive at the date 508 A.D. That this date carries with it the implication of “paganism being overthrown,” is seen in the events surrounding this date; such as the conversion of Clovis, the king of the Franks, to the Catholic faith, and in the victory over the Goths, an important stage in the establishment of the supremacy of the Roman Catholic church in the West.
It is also possible that the “daily” refers to the continual priestly ministry of our Lord in the Heavenly Sanctuary. If so, we can find no satisfactory explanation of this text. I believe that this is one of those Scriptural passages on which future study will shed further light. This prophecy could probably start at 70 A.D., ending in 1405 A.D. However, nothing notable in history -- unless it is in the Waldense’s history -- can be identified with this date. More study, and or, more revelation needs to be performed.
12:12: “the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days” = “We [Mrs. White and others] told him. . . that the 1335 days were ended.” 5MR:203 (written in 1850 A.D.).
