Introduction To The

Book Of Nahum

WHO WROTE:  Nahum.

WHAT TIME PERIOD IS COVERED:  In Nahum 2:18, where “the faces gather blackness,” we have correspondence to Isa. 13:8 and Joel 2:6, with Joel most likely being the originator.  However, the prophecy in Nahum 1:14, “I will make it [namely, “the house of thy gods,” i.e., Nisroch] thy grave,” foretells of Sennacherib’s murder 20 years after his return from Palestine, “as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god,” Isaiah 37:38.  Since this is futuristic, this makes it difficult to establish a time period for Nahum’s prophecies.  The latest possible date of Nahum’s prophecies is fixed, in that it was in B.C. 607-606 [some say B.C. 625] when the city of Nineveh was destroyed; of which Nahum’s Book is prophesying about.

WHEN WRITTEN:  B.C. 607 or 625.  See “WHAT TIME PERIOD IS COVERED.”

INTRODUCTION:  The name Nahum most signifies, “comforter.”  However, it can also mean “consolation” or “vengeance,” or “consoler.”  There are a number of phrases that correspond to those of Isaiah:  Nahum 1:8-9 compare with Isaiah 8:8; 10:23; Nahum 2:10, compare with Isaiah 21:3; 24:1; Nahum 1:15, compare with Isaiah 52:7.

In an interesting note, Nahum came from the Galilee area, Capernaum specifically, which literally means, the “Village of Nahum.”
