THE BOOK OF ISAIAH,
Chapters 1-66
CHAPTER ONE
1:1: “Isaiah” = Meaning, “The Lord Saves.” Isaiah is an artist whose canvas is the soul of his listener.
“Amoz” = Meaning, “strength; strong.” Thus, Isaiah is “the son of strength.”
“Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah” = By mentioning the four kings whose reigns span the period of his prophetic activity, Isaiah ties his Book to the historical and political events of a certain period. This time frame directs us to the accounts of Second Kings, Chapters 15-20, and Second Chronicles, Chapters 26-32, equaling B.C. 821 - B.C. 713.
However, the Jewish Talmud claims that Isaiah was executed by king Manasseh. Its basis for this is found in Second Kings 21:16.
1:2: “Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth” = When an ancient Near Eastern king, such as a Hittite emperor, made a political treaty with a lesser ruler, he invoked his gods as witnesses to emphasize that any violation of the agreement would surely be noticed and punished. However, when God makes a declaration or a covenant with the Israelites , He did not refer to other gods as witnesses. As the Only True God, He called, instead for the heavens and earth to fulfill this role (see Deu. 4:26).
1:5: “the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint” = Herein lies the true state and problem of these people.
1:9: “Sodom. . . Gomorrah” = Even Paul, in quoting this verse (Rom. 9:29) sees the imminent destruction of Israel for the rejection of their Messiah.
“Isaiah, seeing through prophetic vision the apostasy of the Jews, addressed them as rulers of Sodom and Gomorrah. . .” 3SP:22.
1:13: “vain oblations” = These things listed were sanctioned by our Lord. But unless offered in sincerity and truth, they are “an abomination unto” God.
1:18: “let us reason together” = See Isaiah 43:26. You can be unreasonable with me; but you cannot be unreasonable with God.
“they {your sins} shall be as white as snow” = “The God Whom they had been claiming to serve, but Whose character they had misunderstood, was set before them as the great Healer of spiritual disease.” RH, March 25, 1915; PK:315; CC:235.
“red like crimson” = Why not “black as soot?” Because it is a well-known fact that you can get black, or any other color for that matter, out of white, easier than “red” which is the hardest color to get out of white.
“wool” = “Wool” may be very white; but it shows dirt drastically. You cannot keep it clean without God’s help.
1:19: “If” = Our God is a (1) conditional God. In other words, God is an “if” God, not an “iffy” God. Do not be an “iffy” Christian. His ways are (2) non-negotiable and thankfully, righteous to the point that they do not hurt us, but bless us. God never asks more than He requires, not does He require more than He asks. He won’t ask for more, nor will He ask for less. This also means our God is a (3) particular God. He wants things done in a certain way and only that way. And again, you will be blessed for doing so.
1:22: “thy wine mixed with water” = That is, the “wine” is representative of the Divine Word of God, which was mixed and blended with “water,” representing the inventions and doctrines of men. You are supposed to be “drunken” as it were, with the Word of God.
1:24: “the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One” = This might be just for emphasis. But on the other hand, it might be a representation of the Triune Godhead pronouncing this judgment collectively. However, compare to Isaiah 3:1.
1:29: “ashamed of the oaks” = The once coveted places of idol worship shall be exposed for what they really are; false worship. By the word “oaks” our Lord is referencing the trees that were trimmed into the shape of these false gods.
1:31: “tow” = The Hebrew is “ne’oreth,” which is a strand of flax after shaken from the plant when beaten.
CHAPTER TWO
2:3: “out of Zion shall go forth the Law” = Considering this verse is talking of a time when the redeemed will walk the streets of Heaven, consider the fact that God’s Law will still be going “forth” out of “Zion.”
2:7: “Their land also is full of silver and gold” = Made rich by dealing with heathen nations (verse 6), i.e., ill gotten; to the point that they left the worship of the true God to serve false gods (verse 8).
“They plunged into all kinds of presumptuous, foolhardy madness, placed themselves in opposition to the providences of God, and deepened the guilt that was already upon them. They listened to the charges of Satan against the Divine character, and represented God as devoid of mercy and forgiveness.” 4BC:1137.
2:8: “their land is also full of horses” = According the Deuteronomy 17:16-17, Israel was supposed to rely on God, not its own army.
2:10: “fear” = There are 18 different renderings of the phrase, “Fear of the Lord.” Other than the sense of respect, they mostly involve trembling, especially in the major and minor prophets’ admonition to Israel for the breaking of God’s Commandments. See also verse 19.
2:19: “holes of the rocks” = Echoed in Luke 23:30 and Revelation 6:16.
CHAPTER THREE
3:ALL: “Isaiah 3 was presented before me. I was shown that this prophecy has its application to these last days; and the reproofs are given to the daughters of Zion who have thought only of appearance and display.” RH, April 25, 1871.
3:1-8: “Isaiah called the attention of the people to the weakness of their position among the nations of earth; and He showed that this was the result of wickedness in high places.” RH, April 1, 1915; PK:323.
3:4: “I will give children to be their princes” = Meaning, inferior person will take over the rulership. This phrase is really a kind of curse.
“Solomon had written, ‘Woe to thee, O land, when thy king is a child!’ Ecclesiastes 10:16. Thus it was with the land of Judah. Through continued transgression, her rulers had become as children. Isaiah called the attention of the people to the weakness of their position among the nations of earth; and he showed that this was the result of wickedness in high places. ‘Behold,’ he said, ‘the Lord, the Lord of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, the mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient, the captain of fifty, and the honorable man, and the counselor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. . . For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory.’ Isaiah 3:1-8.”
3:10-11: “[10] they shall eat the fruit of their doings [11] the reward of his hands” = Faith without works is dead.
3:12: “women rule over them” = “[15] We are urged by the Spirit of the Lord to bear a pointed testimony against the idolatry of dress in this [16] age. If we are right with God, we will discard everything of a deforming character, such as paniers, bustles, unnecessary plaiting, and fashionable arrangement of the dress upon the body. Ministers and ministers’ wives should be an example in reproving the fashionable display in our sisters who claim to believe the truth. They should have their children dressed in a way that God would approve, presenting them to the Church in simplicity, and modesty of apparel. Far greater pains should be taken to instruct them so that they shall have beautiful characters and keep the way of the Lord than to have them make a stylish appearance, taking the way of the Sodomites. The Scripture says, [verse quoted]. Moreover the Lord saith, ‘Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abominations before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw good.’ I appeal to you in the name of the Lord to study your Bibles, to be doers of the Word, and to educate your children that they may know the way of the Lord, so that the curse of Eli may not come upon you.” PH096:15-16.
“ ‘They which lead thee,’ the prophet continued, ‘cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.’ Verse 12. During the reign of Ahaz this was literally true; for of him it is written: ‘He walked in the ways of the kings of Israel, and made also molten images for Baalim. Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom;’ ‘yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel. And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.’ [2Ch. 28:2, 3; 2Ki. 16:3, 4].” RH, April 1, 1915 par. 5&6.
3:16: “mincing” = Meaning, “grinding; or crushing.”
3:18: “cauls” = A decorative headband or bonnet.
“round tires like the moon” = The Hebrew is “saharon.” In Judges 8:21 & 26 it is simply translated as “ornaments.”
CHAPTER FOUR
4:1: “seven women shall take hold of one Man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name” = For why “seven,” see Revelation, Chapters 2 & 3. The “one Man” is representative of Christ. These “women” want the title of “Christian,” but not the life and duties thereof.
4:2: “the Branch” = A reference to the Messiah (Isa. 11:1; Jer. 23:5; 33:15; see also Isa. 7:4; Zec. 3:8; 6:12; Mat. 25:31; Rom. 1:3).
“them that are escaped of Israel” = Those that do not follow in her sins.
4:3: “written among the living” = The Book of Life.
4:5: “smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night” = Echoing Exodus, Chapter 13.
CHAPTER FIVE
5:ALL: There are listed here 6 “Woes.”
1) Verses 8-10 = Against Materialism = Greed.
2) Verses 11-17 = Against Hedonism = The Philosophy of pleasure.
3) Verses 18-19 = Against the Flaunting of Sin.
4) Verse 20 = Denying The Word Of God = Calling Evil Good.
5) Verse 21 = Against False Wisdom.
6) Verses 22-23 - Lack of Justice.
5:1: “vineyard” = This “vineyard” the Lord is speaking of, obviously represents Israel (see verse 7)
5:2 & 4: “wild grapes” = The Hebrew is “beushiym,” literally meaning, “stinking or worthless things,” “stinkberries.”
5:7: “cry” = Hebrew “tsa’aqah,” meaning “cry,” as in outcry against, or cry of distress, especially as heard by God.
5:8: “join house to house” = To ensure that no one else can afford property but themselves. A greedy people are they.
5:10: “acres” = A Biblical “acre” was considered to be whatever one ox could plow in one day.
5:14: “hell hath enlarged herself” = This is the “second death” by the way.
5:18: “sin as it were with a cart rope” = Sin was the wagon to which they were harnessed as if with a thick cart-rope; even to the point of bragging about it.
5:19: “let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw high and come, that we may know” = This is a dare to the God of Heaven. This is wickedness in all its glory.
5:26: “He will lift up an ensign to the nations from far” = God allowed Assyria to take over the northern kingdom. And a little later He allows Babylon to take over the southern kingdom.
5:28: “flint” = A hard material. The ancients did not usually shoe their horses. Hence, a hard, solid hoof, would add greatly to the value of a horse.
CHAPTER SIX
6:1: “In the year that king Uzziah died” = Uzziah is the same personage as Azariah. According to “Albert Barnes Notes on the Bible,” “The Chaldee, however, reads this: ‘in the year when Uzziah was smitten with the leprosy;’ and most of the Jewish commentators so understand it. . .The rabbis say that the meaning is, that he then became ‘civilly’ dead, by ceasing to exercise his functions as a king, and that he was cut off as a leprous man from all connection with the people, and from all authority.”
“I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne” = “In this vision, Isaiah saw the Lord seated on a throne in the Most Holy Place, above the Ark containing His Commandments.” PUR, July 17, 1902. If this be the case, Isaiah is seeing after 1844 A.D., or this should read “Holy Place.” I believe it should read “Holy Place,” because according to verse 6, “one of the seraphims” took “a live coal” “from off the altar,” which should be the Alter of Incense; located in the Holy Place.
“In the face of such conditions it is not surprising that when, during the last year of Uzziah’s reign, Isaiah was called to bear to Judah God’s messages of warning and reproof, he shrank from the responsibility. He well knew that he would encounter obstinate resistance. As he realized his own inability to meet the situation, and thought of the stubbornness and unbelief of the people for whom he was to labor, his task seemed to him almost hopeless. Should he in despair relinquish his mission, and leave Judah undisturbed to their idolatry? Were the gods of Nineveh to rule the earth, in defiance of the God of Heaven? Such thoughts as these were crowding through Isaiah’s mind as he stood under the portico of the temple. Suddenly the gate and the inner veil of the temple seemed to be uplifted or withdrawn, and he was permitted to gaze within, upon the holy of holies, where even the prophet’s feet might not enter.” RH, March 11, 1915; PK:306-307.
“This was a revelation of the glory of Christ’s Divinity.” RH, February 18, 1896.
“When God was about to send Isaiah with a message to His people, He first permitted the prophet to look in vision into the holy of holies within the sanctuary. Suddenly the gate and the inner veil of the temple seemed to be uplifted or withdrawn, and he was permitted to gaze within, upon the holy of holies, where even the prophet’s feet might not enter. There rose before him a vision of Jehovah sitting upon a throne high and lifted up, while the train of His glory filled the temple. Around the throne were seraphim, as guards about the great King, and they reflected the glory that surrounded them. As their songs of praise resounded in deep notes of adoration, the pillars of the gate trembled, as if shaken by an earthquake. With lips unpolluted by sin, these angels poured forth the praises of God. ‘Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts,’ they cried; ‘the whole earth is full of His glory.’ ” GW:21; AG:72.
6:2: “seraphims” = The Hebrew for “Seraphim” is “saraph,” which literally translates as “fiery one.” The word “Seraphim” is plural already and does not need the added “s.” It is not as though it were a fiery flame, but as meaning “very active.” Some think it applies to burning; but it really means “to burn with fiery zeal.” Many want to translate it as “serpent.” But if we go to Numbers 21:6, which is where this concept comes from, we can clearly see that “saraph” is separated from the Hebrew word for “serpent,” which is “nachash.” Thus, “fiery one” better fits the depiction. See my Bible Study: “ANGELS, A BREAKDOWN OF.”
6:3: “Holy, holy, holy” = Could it be that the reason there are “three” “Holies” used is because of One for the “Father,” One for the “Son,” and One for the “Holy Spirit?”
6:6: “live coal” = Fire is an agent of purification, because it burns away impurity (see Num. 31:23). But the “live coal” is taken from off of the Altar Of Incense, located in the Holy Place, in order to light the incense. Thus, Isaiah’s mouth became like incense; a holy fragrance if you will; spreading a holy message.
6:7: “thy sin purged” = “In the vision that came to Isaiah in the temple court {HERE AGAIN this is incorrect; he would be in the Holy Place], he was given a clear view of the character of the God of Israel. . . {God}“had appeared before him in great majesty; yet the prophet was made to understand the compassionate nature of his Lord. . . In beholding his God, the prophet had found pardon and peace.” RH, March 18, 1915; PK:314; CC:235. SDA’s note the date. Clearly her changed writings were not carefully checked before changing them.
6:8: “us” = Note the word “us.” Is this the Godhead, or does God include all of the Heavenly hoast? Most likely, just the Godhead.
6:9: “Go, and tell this people” = “The prophet’s duty was plain; he was to lift his voice in protest against the prevailing evils. But he dreaded to undertake the work without some assurance of hope. ‘Lord, how long?’ (verse 11) he inquired. Are none of Thy chosen people ever to understand, and repent, and be healed? His burden of soul in behalf of erring Judah was not to be borne in vain. His mission was not be to be wholly fruitless. Yet the evils that had been multiplying for many generations could not be removed in his day. Throughout his lifetime he must be a patient, courageous teacher -- a prophet of hope as well as of doom. The divine purpose finally accomplished, the full fruitage of his efforts, and of the labors of all God’s faithful messengers, would appear. A remnant should be saved.” RH, March 11, 1915; PK:308-309; YRP:266.
6:10: “and be healed” = Isaiah is here told beforehand that his message from God would not be accepted and none would be converted. Indeed, “Woe is me,” verse 5, Isaiah exclaims. According to the Apostle John, in John 12:37-39, quoting this verse, the same is done to Jesus. This verse is quoted seven times in the New Testament. The other six being, Matthew 13:14; Mark 4:12; Luke 8:10; Acts 28:26; and Romans 11:8.
6:13: “so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof” = According to Ezra 9:2, the “holy seed” would be the people of God. Thus, the meaning is that a portion, “a tenth” according to this verse to be exact, would accept the message and remain in the land.
The “Dead Sea Scrolls” translates verses 12 & 13 this way: “Until the LORD removes people far away, and there are many empty places in the middle of the land. Even though a tenth of its people remain in it, it will once again be burned, like a terebinth or an oak tree, the stump of which, though the tree has been felled, still contains holy seed.”
“This assurance of the final fulfillment of God’s purpose brought courage to the heart of Isaiah. . . he had the promise that the messages of Jehovah to backsliding Judah would be accompanied by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit; and the prophet was nerved for the work before him. Throughout his long and arduous mission he carried with him the memory of this vision. For sixty years or more he stood before the children of Judah as a prophet of hope, waxing bolder and still bolder in his predictions of the future triumph of the Church.” RH, March 11, 1915; PK:310.
CHAPTER SEVEN
7:2: “Ephraim” = Meaning, the northern kingdom.
7:3: “Shearjashub thy son” = See my Isaiah 8:18 Note and my Introduction. This very name carried in it a sign and pledge of the promised deliverance, signifying, “The remnant shall return;” for “Shearjashub” means, “The remnant shall return.” His name (Isa. 7:3 & 14; 8:3) was a standing memorial to Ahaz and the Jews that the nation should not, notwithstanding the general calamity (Isa. 7:17-25; 8:6-8), be utterly destroyed (Isa. 10:21-22). The prophetic name of Isaiah’s son was also intended to draw the king to Jehovah; signifying as it were, the promise of Jehovah God, the prophetic return of a remnant people devoted to Him.
This name that Isaiah gave his son was for a “sign” to the people, and had been given in order to keep before the nation the great truth that God was their Protector, and that however much they might suffer or be punished, yet the nation would not be totally destroyed, for the great Deliverer was still to come. In short though, Isaiah’s sons name signified that the rest of the people would return out of their captivity after 70 years’ time. In a side note the Targum interprets this not of Isaiah’s natural son, but of his disciples; paraphrasing it thus, “thou, and the rest of thy disciples, who have not sinned, and are turned from sin.”
7:4: “neither be fainthearted for the two tails” = God is telling Isaiah that the coalition of “Rezin,” here and verse 1, and “Pekah,” verse 1, would not succeed. The Assyrian Tiglathpileser would eventually destroy the Rezin-Pekah coalition (2Ki. 15:29).
7:8: “within threescore and five years” = Within 65 years, Esarhaddon replaced Ephraim, northern Israel (2Ki. 17:24; Ezra 4:2 & 10) with colonists, ending the national existence of Ephraim.
7:9: “If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established” = The “Dead Sea Scrolls” puts it this way, “If all of you don’t keep on believing, you’ll never remain loyal.”
7:12: “neither will I tempt the LORD” = This sounds like a great response, until you read Isaiah’s response to this rejection of God attempting to help Ahaz believe in Him.
7:13: “Hear ye now” = Notice the change from “thy God,” in verse 11, to “my God,” here. Plus, Isaiah is no longer just addressing Ahaz, but the entire “house of David.”
7:14: “virgin” = The contested Hebrew word for the translation of “virgin” is, “almah.” It is used six other times:
In Genesis 24:43, where a “virgin,” of “marriageable young woman age,” was sought for by Abraham's servant. We can know this because Genesis 24:16 uses the Hebrew word “bethulah,” for “a virgin,” and follows with “neither had any man known her.” Why would the Scriptures have to clarify “bethulah” as being “a virgin” if the Hebrew word, it-and-of-itself, is all conclusive? Apparently, it isn’t. Therefore, Isaiah’s Hebrew word “almah” is all conclusive as well representing a “virgin.”
In Exodus 2:8, where this is clearly referring to Moses’ sister, who at this age is obviously a “virgin.” No question that this is in reference of “virginity.”
In Psalm 68:25, where it is unclear other than the word itself meaning ‘virgins.”
In Proverbs 30:19, where it could be considered to be unclear. But to do so has a young man wooing a young woman whom he knows to be a non “virgin.” Not likely. Also, verse 20 is or may not be describing the same woman.
In Song Of Solomon 1:3 & 6:8, where harems of “virgins” are clearly described. After Solomon had sexual relations with these, they would then be transferred into the concubine section, where the two terms are clearly identified as to their respective meanings in Song Of Solomon 6:8-9.
Thus, Isaiah used “almah” for a young woman who is mature enough to conceive and is still a “virgin.” Whereas any other word (“bethulah”) he would have to add a description or clarification. Let’s go over that again. Of course, the Matthew 1:23-25 account and Luke 1:27 & 34, clearly describes Mary as being a “virgin.” So why didn’t Isaiah just use the Hebrew word “bethulah,” as in Exodus 22:16 & 49, and other places (except possibly in Joel 1:8), which clearly defines the woman as being a “virgin?” Because in other places it is not as clear and as pointed out in Genesis 24:16 & 43, it had to be defined. Whereas “almah,” does not have to be defined, and in Isaiah’s mind, is more descriptive of a woman being a “virgin.” I say this because if you are going to prove what a particular author means, use the same Author and not go to another Book of the Bible (Matthew or Luke) to interpret what that Author means.
Therefore, if we go to Isaiah 54:1-6, where in verse 4 Isaiah uses a form of “almah,” that being “kalam,” which describes a “virgin,” because of “forget the shame of thy youth,” a young maiden not yet married; shame in those times was a woman without children. Whereas the solution for being baren is the taking of a “husband” in verse 5. By contrast, “the reproach of thy widowhood,” means that she never had a child. Bottom line, Isaiah likes the word “almah” to describe a “virgin” woman.
Also, to better clarify, “almah” refers to a very young “virgin.” Whereas “Kalam” refers to an older “virgin,” or a young woman who has yet to be taken by a “husband.” Thus, Isaiah is being more clear as to the nature of this “virgin.” And thus, we can trust the accounts in Matthew and Luke. For Isaiah’s play on words are clear, for how is it possible for “a virgin [“almah”] to conceive,” if she is not pregnant? Meaning, she is. And this is the “sign” that “Immanuel,” i.e., God has arrived -- is with you. Now we can know for sure that Jesus, The Christ, fulfilled this prophecy of a Coming Messiah. He is the “sign.”
In a side note, it must be remembered that according to Deuteronomy 22:20-21, if a man marries a presumed “virgin” and she be found not to be a “virgin,” she was to be stoned to death. Bottom line, Isaih is clearly refering to this personage as being a “virgin.”
“call His Name Immanuel” = This may sound odd, but hear me out. This was a statement, an understanding, and not necessarily a name, but a title. This is proven by seeing Isaiah’s prophecy in Chapter 8. In verse 3, “the LORD” told Isaiah to (name his child) “Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.” Yet, according to verse 8 the child will be referred to in a different name after Isaiah’s prophecy in verses 4-8 take place, that being, “O Immanuel.” Which is interpreted and used again in verse 10, “God is with us.” Thus, that Jesus is the name of the Messiah, and not “Immanuel,” can be explained as “Immanuel” is just a statement, title, or whatever you would like to call it, as opposed to the actual name. Here is the point. Otherwise, Isaiah is a false prophet and we should throw his writings out of the Sacred Word.
7:15: “Butter and honey” = From “John Gill’s Exposition of the Bible” we read: “As the Messiah Jesus no doubt did; since He was born in a land flowing with milk and honey, and in a time of plenty, being a time of general peace; so that this phrase points at the place where, and the time when, the Messiah should be born, as well as expresses the truth of His human nature, and the manner of His bringing up, which was in common with that of other children [which shows His true humanity].”
The word rendered “butter” Hebrew, “chemah,” denotes not butter, but thick and curdled milk. This was the common mode of using milk as an article of food in the East, and is still. In no passage in the Old Testament does “butter” seem to be meant by the word. The same is true with verse 22.
According to Bochart, in his work, “Hieroz,” P. i. lib. xi. ch. li. p. 630, this was the usual diet proscribed by the prescription of physicians for infants in those days. Barnabas, in his epistle says, “The infant is first nourished with honey, and then with milk.” Paulus says, “It is fit that the first food given to a child be honey, and then milk.” So also Aetius, “Give to a child, as its first food, honey; see Bochart.”
The implication, in my opinion, is that Messiah will be born when there is relative peace in the land. But by verse 23, trouble shall come to the land.
7:18: “shall hiss” = Better, “shall call for” these things to come and desolate the land.
7:22: “Butter” = See my Isaiah 7:15 Note.
7:23: “briers and thorns” = See my Isaiah 7:15 Note.

CHAPTER EIGHT
8:1 & 3: “Mahershalalhashbaz” = “Mahershalalhashbaz” means, “swift is booty, speedy is prey,” or “speed the spoil, hasten the plunder.” Thus, Isaiah’s child’s name intimates that a nation (in this case the Assyrian army) would come upon the Jewish state with great speed and make a great spoil. So it is that they (in this case the Assyrians), would hasten to the spoil (namely, to spoil of Syria and Samaria), and speed to the prey (that is, plunder the people through torture and the scattering of them throughout the kingdom of Assyria). The “Targum” renders it, “hasten to seize the prey, and to take away the spoil.” And some translate this as, “in hastening the prey, the spoiler hastens.” Perhaps it may be better rendered, “hasten to the spoil, hasten to the prey,” as if the words were spoken to the Assyrian monarch to hasten to the spoil of Damascus and Samaria. It is the repetition of the same thing in different words, thus most probably has respect to the spoils of both.
“The accession of Ahaz to the throne brought Isaiah and his associates face to face with conditions more appalling than any that had hitherto existed in the realm of Judah. Many who had formerly withstood the seductive influence of idolatrous practices, were now being persuaded proving untrue to their trust. . . even some of the priests were teaching for hire [Mic. 3:11].” RH, April 1, 1915; PK:322.
8:3: “I went unto the prophetess” = Notice that Isaiah’s wife is a “prophetess.” Unfortunately, we have no record of her prophecies or life events.
8:7: “bringeth up upon them the waters of the river” = Meaning, Assyria’s armies would overflow the land of the northern kingdom.
8:8: “pass through Judah” = Notice that the Assyrian army “pass through Judah,” but don’t harm them, for their close of probation is not yet. Also, Judah did not help, nor could they, in stopping the destruction of its northern family.
8:12: “A confederacy” = The undertone is that “confederacy” of the Church with the world never turns out well.
8:14: “for a Stone of Stumbling and for a Rock of Offence” = A clear reference to the Messiah and Israel’s rejection of Him. See First Corinthians 10:4.
“gin” = The Hebrew is “H6341; pach,” meaning, “a snare; a trap.” As opposed to “a snare,” Hebrew “H4170; moqesh,” meaning, “to ensnare; bait, lure, snare.”
8:16: “testimony, seal the Law” = “The seal of God’s Law is found in the Fourth Commandment. This only, of all the Ten, brings to view both the Name and the Title of the Lawgiver.” 4SP:284.
8:19: “Seek unto them that have familiar spirits” = In an astonishing fact, when people seek materialism and it does not satisfy, where they turn next is spiritualism and necromancy. See my Bible Study: “DEATH, THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT.”
8:20: “To the Law and to the testimony” = The Hebrew word for “Law” here is, “Torah.” In other words, Isaiah is speaking of the five Books of Moses (Deu. 4:44; 31:9). In regards to “testimony,” The Hebrew word used here is “Tudah,” or the “Eudah,” as found in Second Chronicles 23:11. That the “testimony” refers to, and is, the Ten Commandments, see these two Hebrew words as used in Exodus 25:16; 30:6, 36; 31:18; 32:15; 34:29; 38:21; Numbers 17:4; Second Kings 11:2; Psalm 99:7.
“the Testimony” = A “testimony” is whoever is giving it. Thus, the “Testimoner” if you will, in this case, is Jesus.
“if they speak not according to this Word” = “God is displeased with us when we go to listen to error, without being obliged to go; for unless He sends us to those meetings where error is forced home to the people by the power of the will, He will not keep us. The angels cease their watchful care over us, and we are left to the buffetings of the enemy, to be darkened and weakened by him and the power of his evil angels; and the light around us becomes contaminated with the darkness.” EW:125.

CHAPTER NINE
9:1: “Galilee of the nations” = Here is a prophecy of the coming Messiah to the land of “Galilee.”
9:2: “upon them hath the light shined” = The region of Lake Galilee is depicted here (as in the day of Midian,” verse 4) because it was among the first territories of Israel to be conquered. In response to Ahaz’s request for aid, Tiglath-pileser III took the Galilee and Transjordanian regions of northern Israel, carried some of the people captive, and turned the territories into Assyrian provinces (2Ki. 15:29). So, Isaiah’s message is that the first to be conquered would be the first to see deliverance. Matthew quotes from and to the fulfillment of this verse in Matthew 4:13-16. The reason it is a little different in Matthew’s quotation of it is because Matthew is quoting from the “Septuagint,” the Greek translation of the Scriptures, instead of the Hebrew.
9:3: “they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest” = This could very well be in reference to the Second Coming, as many Bible commentators have noted.
9:4: “yoke. . . staff.. . rod” = Possibly a reference to the Satanic trinity. See Revelation 16:13, “dragon; beast; false prophet.” God will eventually “break” this up.
9:6: “unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given” = The Bible writers were very careful to express everything correctly in regards to Divinity, i.e., “Child” equals the Humanity of Christ, while “Son” is equivalent to the Divinity of Christ. Only a “Child” can be “born,” while a “Son” has to be “given” by the Father. That God chose to enter into His creation (Colossians 1:16-17) and become a man (forever) is astonishing. See Hebrews 2:17; Revelation 5:4-5; and others.
“Wonderful” = Just as the Divine Angel of the “LORD,” Judges 13:15-18, described His own name to Samson’s father as being “wonderful,” Judges 13:18. The “KJV” translates it as being “secret.” But the same Hebrew root for “Wonderful” is used in Judges 13:18, as is used in Judges 13:19, for the Angels name. And as he then ascended toward Heaven in the sacrificial flame on Manoah’s altar (Judg. 13:20), he thereby prefigures Christ’s offering of Himself more than one thousand years later.
“Counsellor” = A title more appropriate to the Holy Spirit, which shows that the Three are One.
“The Mighty God” = For Jehovah’s Witnesses, see my Bible Study: “JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES, LETTER TO A,” and these comments). This should be expressive enough that Jesus is God, in that He is the only “God” “born” as “a Child.” However, “everlasting Father” truly expresses this fact in a way which cannot be denied (see my comments below). In reference to “The Mighty God,” so called the Divine God in Romans 9:5 and First John 5:20. Very clear in Colossians 1:16-17.
“everlasting Father” = According to ancient history and the “Targum” (the Aramaic translation of the Old Testament), the “Father of Glory” is “Glorious,” the “Father of Wisdom,” is “Wise,” the “Father of Love,” is “Lovely,” the Father of Eternity,” is “Eternal,” Etcetera. In other words, the Father of anything is the originator and possessor of it. Just as Jabal, “was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle,” Genesis 4:20, and Jubal, “was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ,” Genesis 4:21, so the “everlasting Father,” as expressed here, is teaching us that Jesus, being the Originator, or better, the Creator of everything (Col. 1:16-17), is the “Father of creation;” not God the Father. The verse then, would also teach us that Jesus possesses Deity and is eternal; without beginning and ending. In the ancient Near East, kings and deities had multiple names to show their greatness.
Arguments are contrived against this verse in order to discount the true Biblical FACT that this is speaking of the Coming Messiah, or that the names do not apply to the “child.” One of the arguments is that “a Child is born” and “a son is given” are already in the past tense. This argument goes away by reading further, “His Name shall be called,” which clearly links all to future tense constructive Hebrew language.
Another argument is brought out in the “Chabad” translation, which is Hebrew based but ignores the Hebrew, or uses the Hebrew how they want instead of sticking to the rules of translating Hebrew (verbs in this case). Here is its translation, after “everlasting Father, called his name, ‘the prince of peace.’ ” In other words, by adding a verb incorrectly into the Hebrew text here, God the Father is all the Names of God the Father, but the “child” is “called” “the prince of peace.” When translators take such liberties, the agenda becomes quit clear.
The Biblical Hebrew supports the FACT that all the Names given apply to the “Child.” Why? Because in every other instance that the Hebrew verb “qara” is used, when it is followed next by a “name,” plus a predominant suffix, such as “his name,” her name,” “their name,” and then immediately after that, a proper name. The proper name always then becomes the object, and NEVER the subject. Examples are: Genesis 11:9; 16:11; 19:37-38; 25:25-26 & 30; 26:21-22; 27:36; 29:32-35; 30:6 & 8 & 18; 31:48; 35:8 & 18; 38:29-30; 50:11; Exodus 2:10; 15:23; 17:15; Judges 1:26 15:19; Ruth 4:17; First Chronicles 4:9; 7:16; Isaiah 7:14; 8:3; Hosea 1:4 & 6 & 9. Thus, to argue that the names apply to the Father God and not to the Child is to go against Hebrew syntax (which equals “History of Jewish Interpretation”) and the verses context.
But the real problem here is that Jewish scholars did not want the “child” to be “called” either “Mighty God,” or “Everlasting Father.” The “Septuagint,” which is the Jewish translation of Hebrew into Greek, even goes so far as to translate this passage as, “his name is called the Messenger of great counsel, for I will bring peace upon the princes, and health to him.” Thus, even before the time of Christ, the Jewish scholars were not ready, nor are they now ready, to call this future “Child,” -- “Mighty God.” See Isaiah 10:21 & Daniel 7:14, where Divinity is assigned to the “Son.”
Another argument is that this “child” is referring to king Hezekiah, for Isaiah 9:4 speaks of a “rod,” and Isaiah 10:27 speaks of “his yoke,” and Isaiah 14:25 refers to “his yoke” again, meaning, in Hezekiah’s day the Assyrian “yoke” would be broken by this “child,” being Hezekiah, staying in context. Plus, in Isaiah 10:8-11 and 37:11-13, the “kings of Assyria” ask in taunting, “where is your God against the power of our gods?”
This argument ignores Isaiah 9:7 (staying in context), which states that this “Child’s” “government” will be “establish[ed]” “even for ever.” And we know that Hezekiah’s kingdom was not set up forever; but a Coming Messiah’s would. And to counteract the context verses given for this argument, if we look at Isaiah 2:2-4 & 11:3-9, these are futuristic (no disagreement; nor do they apply AT ALL to Hezekiah; for these promises cannot apply to him). Thus, context used from different Chapters is pushing the envelope for agenda. See also First Chronicles 17:11-14, which is promised to the “Son” Who Comes through the house of David. Even the post Hezekiah prophets understood that this promised “Child” had not yet appeared (see Zec. 9:9-10). That Hezekiah is a Messianic prototype can be well argued however.
“Jesus is not only our shepherd; He is our ‘everlasting Father.’ ” DA:483.
From the “Advent Review and Sabbath Herald,” June 6, 1871, James White writing, “We have not as much sympathy with Unitarians that deny the Divinity of Christ, as with Trinitarians who hold that the Son is the eternal Father, and talk so mistily about the three-one God. Give the Master all that Divinity with which the Holy Scriptures clothe Him.”
“The Prince of Peace” = This is how Messiah was presented to the world by the Heavenly angels (Luke 2:14).
9:10: “we will build” = The meaning is, “We will rebuild again better than before.” In a miss-used sense, this verse was used after “911” and the falling of the “Twin Towers” in New York City. The builders did not realize that this verse was speaking in arrogance against God. Or did they?
9:12 & 17 & 21 (& 5:25 & 10:4): “For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still” = God still offers redemption by putting forth His hand to you; but you must take it.
CHAPTER TEN
10:8: “Are not My princes altogether kings” = God will now list the nations and cities He will use to demolish His unrepentant people.
10:14: “his fat ones” = The “his” not meaning God’s, but Assyria’s army that had become fattened with the spoils of victory.
10:22: “a remnant of them shall return” = We see this in the Book of Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah, that only a few return to the land of Israel.
10:24: “be not afraid of the Assyrian” = “The boastful Assyrian, while used by God for a season as the rod of His anger (see Isa. 10:5) for the punishment of the nations, was not always to prevail. [Verses 24-27 quoted and Isa. 14:24-28]. The power of the oppressor was to be broken. Yet Hezekiah in the earlier years of his reign had continued to pay tribute to Assyria, in harmony with the agreement entered into by Ahaz.” RH, May 20, 1915; PK:349-350.
10:27: “because of the anointing” = Better, the “Dead Sea Scrolls” has it as, “because you’ve become obese.”
10:34: “shall fall by a Mighty One” = I believe this to be a reference (dual application; one for the destruction of Assyria and one referencing) to the Second Coming of Christ.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
11:1 & 10: “(1) a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his [Jesse’s] roots & (10) Root of Jesse” = Identification of this personage has never been in doubt by any reputable Bible commentator, until Bible versions after 1881 A.D. (see my Bible Study upon that subject). Therefore, let’s establish Whom this personage is without question.
Let’s break down some Hebrew terminology first:
“Rod” = Hebrew, “kho’ter,” meaning, “a shoot; a twig.” Job 14:7-9.
“Stem” = Hebrew, “geh’zah,” meaning, “a stump (indicating the decaying remains of a felled tree).” Yet out of it shall Come forth the “Root of David,” Romans 15:12.
“Branch” = Hebrew, “netser,” meaning, “a sprout, a branch (indicating a sprout that grows from a decaying tree’s root system to become a new tree).” Isaiah 4:2; Jeremiah 23:5; 33:15; Zechariah 3:8; 6:12. The Holy Spirit may be using “netser” as a play on words to indicate that our Lord would be known as coming from Nazareth. “Jesus of Nazareth,” Matthew 26:71; etcetera.
“Grow out” = Hebrew, “paw’raw,” meaning, “to bear fruit, to be fruitful, to flourish.”
“Root” = Hebrew, “sheh’resh,” meaning, “a root, roots, depths (a metaphor for family or people group, ones descendants, family roots).”
According to Luke 4:21, Jesus claims, “This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears.” Speaking of verse 2. But let’s look further. In Psalm 52:8-9, king David identifies himself as “a green olive tree in the house of God.” So David is the tree out of the “roots” of the line of Jesse. Then we go to Jeremiah 11:9-10 &16-17, where the “green olive tree” is cut down and “its branches are broken.” Meaning, David’s lineage is broken up because of sin. Or better, the Israelite nation as a whole. So now, only the “stump” is left. But out of that “stump,” the “root” system, will come the Messiah, according to Matthew 1:1-2 & 6 & 16; confirmed again in Acts 13:21-23. See also the Messiah Chapter, in Isaiah 53, specifically verse 2.
Now if we go to Matthew 2:23, we have this prophecy, “that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.” However, nowhere do we find this prophecy in the Old Testament, unless we go to the root word for “Branch,” which is, “ney’tser,” which is where we get our root term for “Nazareth,” Greek, “Nazoraios,” or better, “ney’tser,” which was founded by the descendants of king David. In referance, “Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth?” John 1:46. Also, according to Revelation 22:16, Jesus claims to be “the Root and offspring of David.”
Now to the lovely “green olive tree” that was cut down. If we go to John 15:1 & 4, Jesus is claiming to be the “true vine,” the “Branch,” that “shall grow out of his [Jesse’s] roots,” which are still alive. Basically, everyone knew Whom the Isaiah, Chapter Eleven, prophecy was referring to (The Messiah). Here is a ancient interpretation of the Hebrew Bible, i.e., the “Aramaic Targum,” which translates Isaiah 11:1 as, “And a king shall proceed from the sons of Jesse, and the Messiah from his sons’ sons shall arise.” See also Romans 15:8-9 & 12.
11:2: “And the Spirit of the Lord (1) [Center shaft of the seven branched Candlestick] shall rest upon Him, the spirit of wisdom (2) and understanding (3), the spirit of counsel (4) and might (5), the spirit of knowledge (6) and of the fear of the Lord (7)” = Herein is seen a breakdown of the seven characteristics of the Holy Spirit and identification of His ministry. These are referred to in Revelation 1:4; 3:1; 4:5; 5:6.
11:4: “with the breath of his lips shall He slay the wicked” = Without God’s breath (Gen. 2:7), connected to the body, man dies. “The wicked” could be translated as “the wicked one,” meaning Satan. But I believe it is all conclusive.
11:6: “a little child shall lead them” = “There man will be restored to his lost kingship, and the lower order of beings will become gentle, and the timid trustful.” RH, July 1, 1915; ED:304; Mar:353.
11:10: “Root of Jesse” = See my Isaiah 11:1 & 10 Note.
“ensign” = Meaning, “standard.” The Law of God being that.
11:11: “the second time” = The Books of Esther, Ezra, and Nehemiah describe the first time. We are living in the “second time,” just before the Second Coming of Christ. See Revelation 14:12 for who they are.
11:12: “four corners of the earth” = Here is my Revelation 7:1 & 20:8 Note: “four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth” “four quarters of the earth” = Isaiah (11:12) and John are just using figurative language. To make this mean anything other than that is to miss the main point of the text. Focusing on “four corners” however, they are just using the expression as we do today when we say, for example, that “the sun is setting,” or that the wind “rose from the east.” To insist on a literal interpretation of these prophetic texts, when the context indicates a figurative idea of north, south, east, and west, is to take these passages out of context and make them teach something that they are not teaching.
In Matthew 24:31 we find our Lord “gather[ing] together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” This is done while these “four angels” hold events, “that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.” In Matthew 15:19, Jesus was not talking about human physiology, or the literal human heart. He was using a figure of speech to make a moral point.
In regards to the prophecy in Isaiah, Israel is to be gathered and protected from its enemies (upon condition of obedience; of course; and as verse 16 shows, only a “remnant” will be delivered). In regards to Revelation 7:1, the “four winds” are held in check in order for “till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads,” Revelation 7:3. Check this with Ezekiel, Chapter 9, verses 1-6. In Jeremiah 23:19-20 (see also Dan. 7:2) we learn that “winds” stand for Gods method of using destructive forces (judgments) upon the wicked. Therefore, this description has nothing to do with a flat earth. See my Bible Study: “FLAT EARTH.”
CHAPTER TWELVE
12:ALL: Isaiah, Chapter 12, is a short psalm of praise to God for His merciful and powerful comfort. Actually, it is a song.
12:2: “draw water out of the wells of salvation” = During the Feast of Tabernacles the priest “bore the flagon to the altar, which occupied a central position in the court of the priests. Here were two silver basins, with a priest standing at each one. The flagon of water was poured into one, and a pipe which communicated with the Kedron, and was conducted to the Dead Sea. This display of the consecrated water represented the fountain that at the command of God had gushed from the rock to quench the thirst of the children of Israel. Then the jubilant strains rang forth, [verses quoted].” DA:449.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
13:4: “the kingdoms” = Plural. According to Daniel, Chapters Two, Five, Seven, and Eight, Babylon was conquered by more than one nation, Media-Persia, in B. C. 539.
13:6: “the day of the Lord is at hand” = “In his vision of the great judgment day, Isaiah witnesses the consternation of those unprepared to meet their Lord in peace.” RH, July 1, 1915.
13:9: “He shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it” = This correlates with Second Thessalonians 2:8 and the Second Coming of Christ.
13:10: “not give their light” = Here is my Matthew 24:29 Note: “shall the sun be darkened” = “At the close of the great papal persecution, Christ declared, the sun should be darkened, and the moon should not give her light. Next, the stars should fall from heaven.” DA:632.
Stars = November 13, 1833: From “The Journal Of Commerce,” November 14, 1833, by Henry Dana Ward: “No philosopher of scholar has told or recorded an event, I suppose, like that of yesterday morning. A prophet 1800 years ago foretold it exactly, if we will be at the trouble of understanding stars falling to mean falling stars; or ‘hoi asters tou ouranou epesan eis teen geen,’ is the only sense in which it is possible to be literally true.”
From “Wikipedia,” under, “Leonids:” “Because of the storm of 1833 and the recent developments in scientific thought of the time (see for example the identification of Halley’s Comet) the Leonids have had a major effect on the development of the scientific study of meteors which had previously been thought to be atmospheric phenomena. Though it has been suggested the meteor shower-storm has been noted in ancient times it was the meteor storm of 1833 that broke into people’s modern day awareness -- it was of truly superlative strength. One estimate is over one hundred thousand meteors an hour, but another, done as the storm abated, estimated in excess of 240,000 meteors during the nine hours of the storm over the entire region of North America east of the Rocky Mountains.”
“This prophecy received a striking and impressive fulfillment in the great meteoric shower of November 13, 1833.” GC:333.
“The signs in the sun, moon, and stars have been fulfilled.” RH, November 22, 1906; AURA:35 & 248; SW, December 1, 1909.
Sun & Moon = First fulfilled on May 19, 1780: From “Noah Webster’s Dictionary, 1869 Edition:” “The dark day, May 19, 1780 -- so called on account of a remarkable darkness on that day extending over all New England. In some places persons could not see to read common print in the open air for several hours together. Birds sang their evening songs, disappeared, and silent; fowls went to roost; cattle sought the barn-yard; and candles were lighted in the houses. The obscuration began about ten o’clock in the morning, and continued till the middle of the next night, but with differences of degree and duration in different places. For several days previous, the wind had been variable, but chiefly from the south-west and the north-east. The true cause of this remarkable phenomenon is not known.”
From The “Journal Of The Connecticut House Of Representatives,” Friday, May 19, 1780: “A solemn gloom of unusual darkness before ten o’clock, -- a still darker cloud rolling under the sable curtain from the north and west before eleven o’clock, -- excluded the light so that none could see to read or write in the House, even at either window, or distinguish persons at a small distance, or perceive any distinction of dress in the circle of attendants; wherefore, at eleven o’clock adjourned the House till two in the afternoon.”
From The “Massachusetts Spy, Correspondence,” 1780: “During the whole time a sickly, melancholy gloom overcast the face of nature. Nor was the darkness of the night less uncommon and terrifying than that of the day, for notwithstanding there was almost a full moon, no object was discernible but by the help of some artificial light, which seen from the neighboring houses and other places at a distance appeared through a kind of Egyptian darkness which seemed almost impervious to its rays. This unusual phenomenon excited the fears and apprehensions of many people.”
“On the 19th of May, 1780, this prophecy was fulfilled.” GC:306.
“May 19, 1780, stands in history as ‘The Dark Day.’ Since the time of Moses, no period of darkness of equal density, extent, and duration has ever been recorded.” GC88:308; GC:308.
“On May 19, 1780, the sun was darkened. That day is known in history as ‘the dark day.’ In the eastern part of North America, so great was the darkness that in many places the people had to light candles at noonday. And until after midnight the moon, though at its full, gave no light.” SJ:176.
“These signs were witnessed before the opening of the nineteenth century. In fulfillment of this prophecy there occurred, in the year 1755, the most terrible earthquake that has ever been recorded. Though commonly known as the earthquake of Lisbon, it extended to the greater part of Europe, Africa, and America. . . [305]
“Twenty-five years later appeared the next sign mentioned in the prophecy, -- the darkening of the sun and moon. What rendered this more striking was the fact that the [306]
“time of its fulfillment had been definitely pointed out. In the Saviour’s conversation with His disciples upon Olivet, after describing the long period of trial for the Church, -- the 1260 years of papal persecution, concerning which He had promised that the tribulation should be shortened, -- He then mentioned certain events to precede His Coming, and fixed the time when the first of these should be witnessed: ‘In those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light.’ {Mark 13:24} The 1260 days, or years, terminated in 1798. A quarter of a century earlier, persecution had almost wholly ceased. Following this persecution, according to the Words of Christ, the sun was to be darkened. On the 19th of May, 1780, this prophecy was fulfilled.” GC88:304 -306.
This is a dual prophecy in that it will again take place just before Christ’s Second Coming as described in Revelation 16:10 & 16:18.
13:11: “I will punish the world” = This will only happen at the Second Coming.
13:13: “I will shake the heavens” = Here is my Matthew 24:29 Note: “the powers of the heavens shall be shaken” = “I saw that when the Lord said ‘heaven’ (in giving the signs recorded by Matthew, Mark and Luke), He meant heaven, and when He said ‘earth’ He meant earth. The powers of heaven, are the Sun, Moon and Stars; they rule in the heavens. The powers of earth are those who bear rule on the earth. The powers of heaven will be shaken at the voice of God. Then the Sun, Moon, and Stars will be moved out of their places. They will not pass away, but be shaken by the voice of God.” PT:24; Broadside2, January 31, 1849; CET:111; EW:41; ExV:23; RH, August 1, 1849.
“in the day of His fierce anger” = At the Second Coming.
13:20: “It shall never be inhabited” = A little before the “Iraq War,” or “Persian Gulf War,” or shortened, “Gulf War,” Saddam Hussein, fifth president of Iraq, attempted to rebuild Babylon. It has yet to be done. Jeremiah parallels this in Jeremiah 50:13 & 39; 51:26 & 29 & 37.
13:21: “doleful creatures” = The Hebrew is “oach,” and might better be translated, “howling animal.”
“satyrs” = No one really knows what this is. Bible commentators have translated it as “hairy; rough long-haired ones; he-goat;” and even “goat-demon.” It might better be translated as, “wild animal.” However, I go with “satyrs” as in Leviticus 17:7 and Second Chronicles 11:15, where the word is translated as “demons.”
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
14:9: “Hell from beneath is moved for thee” = Isaiah’s taunting rhyme against the King of Babylon is a parable, in which the characters, personified trees and fallen monarchs, are fictitious. It is an example of personification, when certain objects are assigned personal attributes. They serve not to reveal the punishment of the wicked in “sheol,” but to forecast in graphic pictorial language God’s judgment upon Israel’s oppressor and his final ignominious destiny in a dusty grave where he is eaten by worms (verse 11). To interpret this parable as a literal description of hell means to ignore the highly figurative, parabolic nature of the passage. In fact, the passage is simply designed to depict the doom of a self-exalted tyrant, not to teach the state of the dead. See my Bible Study, “DEATH, THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT.” However, this could be referring to after the 1,000-year millennium at the Third Coming of Christ.
14:12: “thou fallen from Heaven” = “. . .to pry into the unsearchable plans of God, which Satan had been guilty of,” 1SG:19-20.

14:13: “I will ascend into Heaven” = In the preceding verse, Satan is cast out from “Heaven.” Therefore, the meaning here is that he will aspire to return there; but not with his prior position; he will seek to even, “be like the Most High,” verse 14.
“Instead of seeking to make God supreme in the affections and allegiance of His creatures, it was Lucifer’s endeavor to win their service and homage to himself. And coveting the honor which the infinite Father had bestowed upon His Son, this prince of angels aspired to power which it was the prerogative of Christ alone to wield. {DD:2.1}
“All Heaven had rejoiced to reflect the Creator’s glory and to show forth His praise. And while God was thus honored, all had been peace and gladness. But a note of discord now marred the celestial harmonies. The service and exaltation of self, contrary to the Creator’s plan, awakened forebodings of evil in minds to whom God’s glory was supreme. The Heavenly councils pleaded with Lucifer. The Son of God presented before him the greatness, the goodness, and the justice of the Creator, and the sacred, unchanging nature of His Law. God Himself had established the order of Heaven; and in departing from it, Lucifer would dishonor his Maker, and bring ruin upon himself. But the warning, given in infinite love and mercy, only aroused a spirit of resistance. Lucifer allowed jealousy of Christ to prevail, and he became the more determined. DD:2.1-2.
“exalt my throne” = See Colossians 1:16 that there were “thrones” made in Heaven.
“When Satan rebelled, there was war in Heaven, and he, with all his sympathizers, was cast out. He had held a high office in Heaven, possessing a throne radiant with light. But he swerved from his allegiance to the blessed and only Potentate, and fell from his first estate. All who sympathized with him were driven from the presence of God, doomed to be no more acknowledged in the Heavenly courts as having a right there. Satan became the avowed antagonist of Christ. On the earth he planted the standard of rebellion, and round it his sympathizers rallied.” Manuscript 78, 1905; 7BC:973.8.
“In great mercy, according to His Divine character, God bore long with Lucifer. The spirit of discontent and disaffection had never before been known in Heaven. It was a new element, strange, mysterious, unaccountable. Lucifer himself had not at first been acquainted with the real nature of his feelings; for a time he had feared to express the workings and imaginings of his mind; yet he did not dismiss them. He did not see whither he was drifting. But such efforts as infinite Love and wisdom only could devise, were made to convince him of his error [GOD pleaded with him]. His disaffection was proved to be without cause, and he was made to see what would be the result of persisting in revolt. [GOD showed him the consequences/future]. Lucifer was convinced that he was in the wrong. He saw that ‘the Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works [Psalm 145:17]; that the Divine statutes are just, and that he ought to acknowledge them as such before all Heaven. Had he done this, he might have saved himself and many angels. [Just as God gives us a probation period, so Satan had his]. He had not at that time fully cast off his allegiance to God. Though he had left his position as covering cherub, yet if he had been willing to return to God, acknowledging the Creator’s wisdom, and satisfied to fill the place appointed him in God’s great plan, he would have been reinstated in his office. The time had come for a final decision; he must fully yield to the Divine sovereignty or place himself in open rebellion. He nearly reached the decision to return, but pride forbade him. It was too great a sacrifice for one who had been so highly honored to confess that he had been in error, that his imaginings were false, and to yield to the authority which he had been working to prove unjust.” PP 39.1; TA:40; FLB:70.
“upon the mount of the congregation” = According to Isaiah 2:2 and Ezekiel 28:14, this would be somewhere in Heaven. According to the “Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges,” “We have here apparently an allusion to Babylonian mythology which is partly elucidated by Assyrian inscriptions. There the chief gods are spoken of as born in ‘the house of the mountain-summit of the lands, the mountain of Aralu’ (Schrader, Cuneif. Inscr., ad loc.).” Therefore, this was just another attempt of Satan to replace God (in Babylon).
However, the Hebrew word for “congregation” is, “H4150; moed; moadah,” meaning, “Appointed Place.” In truth, God’s Throne.
“sides of the north” = According to Leviticus 1:1; Job 37:22; Psalm 48:2, and possibly others that various other Bible commentators use to prover this point, this refers to the dwelling place of God in Heaven. However, what it really has reference to is that there was a time a place for the Heavenly creatures to meet together with God.

Isaiah 14:14; Ezekiel 28:15: “like the Most High” = “Had Lucifer really desired to be like the Most High, he would never have deserted his appointed place in Heaven; for the spirit of the Most High is manifested in unselfish ministry. Lucifer desired God’s power, but not His character.” DA:435.
“His heart was filled with love and joy in serving his Creator, until he began to think that his wisdom was not derived from God, but was inherent in himself, and that he was as worthy as was God to receive honor and power. When he found that he could not be as God, he was filled with rebellion, and would not submit his will to the will of God.” ST, September 18, 1893; TA:29, 31.
“Although very exalted, he aspires to be equal with God; and unless the Lord gratifies his ambition, determines to rebel, and refuse submission.” 3SG:36.
Satan “urged that he should be equal with God.” 3SG:37.
“Satan boldly speaks out his rebellion, and points to a large company who think God is unjust in not exalting him to be equal with God, and in not giving him command above Christ. He declares he cannot submit to be under Christ’s Command, that God’s Commands alone will he obey.” 3SG:38.
14:16: “Is this the man” = After the 1000-year resurrection, at the Third Coming of Christ, all will look upon Satan and be astonished that such a personage could so easily fool (deceive) so many.
14:20: “Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial” = Satan is to walk this desolate earth for 1000 years, and not be permitted to enter the grave (die).
14:23: “bittern” = The Hebrew is “qippowd,” which could be a “porcupine” or “hedgehog.”
14:26: “upon the whole earth. . . all the nations” = Once again, Third Coming language.
14:29: “cockatrice” = A “cockatrice” means a “viper” which is a clear reference to Satan. Notice that the serpent could at one time fly! See Genesis 3:14.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
15:1: “Kir of Moab” = “Kir” is actually Kerak, and lies on a mountain peak about ten miles from the southeast corner of the Dead Sea.
Dated to about B.C. 840, more than 100 years before Isaiah’s prophecy, Mesha, King of Moab, erected a stele which was discovered in 1868 A. D. in the city of Diban, which is about 3 miles east of the Dead Sea. It is now labeled as “The Moabite Stone,” and is in the “Louvre” in Paris, France. With the exception of a very few variations, the Moabite language in which the inscription is written on, is identical with the Hebrew language. It was set up by Mesha as a record and memorial of his victories. One of which is his war with Omri, Israel’s king (northern kingdom). See Second Kings 3:4-27.
15:2: “Nebo” = A high mountain in the land of Moab (Deu. 32:49). They were “howling” because, according to “Albert Barns Notes on the Bible,” “Jerome says that the idol Chamos, the principal idol of Moab, was on mount Nebo.”
“baldness” = Shaving off hair was a form of morning.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
16:1: “Send ye the lamb” = A form of paying tribute (2Ki. 2:4).
16:14: “Within three years” = According to Second Kings 18:9, this happened when Shalmaneser came up against Samaria.
CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
17:1: “Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap” = According to Adam Clark’s Commentary On The Bible: “If we credit Midrash, the Damascenes were the most extensive and flagrant of all idolaters. ‘There were in Damascus three hundred and sixty-five streets, in each of these was an idol, and each idol had his peculiar day of worship; so that the whole were worshipped in the course of the year.’ This, or any thing like this, was a sufficient reason for this city’s destruction.”
Some Bible commentators (quoting Adam Clark) mention that this, “prophecy, as it relates to Damascus, was executed in the beginning of the reign of Ahaz, probably about the third year.” We find that fulfilment in Second Kings 16:9. And if you read Second Kings 16:10, Ahaz even fell for one of “flagrant of all” idols. However, do to wars, riots, internal fighting and famine brought on by factions and others, Damascus is even today basically in ruins. If it weren’t for Hizballah and Iran, Damascus would probably not even be in the news.
Many denominations believe the prophecy of Damascus not to have been fulfilled yet, attributing these statements in Chapter 17 to apply to the end times. Or, staying with that theme, Damascus in the end times (dual prophecy) will rise again, only to be destroyed again. The problem is that when focusing upon Israel too much takes away from what will really take place in the last days. See my Bible Studies: “LAST DAY EVENTS IN THEIR ORDER.” And, “ISRAEL’S REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY DOCTRINE.”

From Charlie Kirk: “The most important question instead is ‘What should I do?’ And instead of just looking at the signs of the times saying Jesus is going to zap me up next Thursday, what’s the point in fighting? We should say, ‘We’re going to occupy until He Comes. To be salt and light. And to be a force for goodness.’ So I intentionally avoid the end time talk. Because I find it to be unhelpful. So I’m going to be on the welcoming committee not the planning committee when Christ returns. . . Instead, we should be focused upon being as holy and good and faithful as we can.
17:7: “At that day” = “. . . in the dark days that were to come in the history of Judah, when only a remnant were to be left in the land, the prophet’s words were to continue bearing fruit in decided reformation.” RH, March 25, 1915; PK:320.
17:8: “either the groves” = The “Dead Sea Scrolls” has this, “no regard for Asherah poles.” Trees in groves fashioned into their god Asherah.
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
18:1: “shadowing with wings” = Full of flies; a constant annoyance.
18:2: “scattered and peeled” = Of the many meanings of the Hebrew for “scattered,” that being “maw-shak,” and “peeled,” that being “mo-rawl,” if we attribute the fact that the text is identifying the Ethiopian people, it could be translated as, “tall and smooth-skinned.”
18:3: “All ye inhabitants of the world, and dwellers on the earth” = Everyone is to take notice, especially “earth dwellers” as opposed to Heavenly seekers.
CHAPTER NINETEEN
19:20: “a Saviour” = Notice I have capitalized the word “Saviour.” Why? Because it is the same Hebrew word used, speaking of Christ, in Isaiah 43:3; 45:15 & 21; 49:26; 60:16; although the context there is VERY clear as that of being the Lord. Still, my take is that these passages (16-25) are speaking of the New Earth, after the Third Coming of Christ; our Lord only using “Egypt and Assyria” metaphorically such that we can relate now.
CHAPTER TWENTY
20:1: “Sargon” = Bible critics of believing there was no such “Sargon,” were silenced in 1843, when Paul-Emil Bottadiscovered, “Sargon’s Fortress,” at Khorsabad, in Iraq.
20:2-3: “naked” = It is not probable that the prophet walked uncovered and barefoot for three years; his appearing in that manner was a sign that within three years the Egyptians and Cushite’s (and the ten Northern tribes) should be in the same condition, being conquered and made captives by the king of Assyria. The time was denoted as well as the event; but his appearing in that manner for three whole years could give no premonition of the time at all. It is probable, therefore, that the prophet was ordered to walk so for three days to denote the accomplishment of the event in three years; a day for a year, according to the prophetical rule, Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6.
The word “naked” is used in the Scriptures, not to denote an absolute destitution of clothing, but that the “outer” garment was laid aside. Thus, it is said of Saul that he “stripped off his clothes also, and prophesied before Samuel, and lay down naked all that day,” First Samuel 19:24, that is, he stripped off his royal robes, and was “naked or unclothed” in that respect. So Michal, King David’s wife, accused David of being “uncovered,” Second Samuel 6:20, and it is implied as if she said that he danced “naked” before the ark. But verse 14 reveals that he “was girded with a linen ephod;” that is, with his royal robes laid aside.
Therefore, in looking closer at verses 2 and 3 we find that Isaiah was only to take off the “sackcloth” garment, and his shoes. Sackcloth was commonly worn as an emblem of mourning. But there is reason to believe that it was worn also by the prophets, and was regarded, in some degree, as their appropriate dress. It was made usually of the coarse hair of the goat (in John’s case, camel’s hair), and was worn as a zone or girdle around the loins. That this was the dress of Elijah is apparent from Second Kings 1:8: “He was an hairy man, and girt with a girdle of leather;” that is, he was clothed in a garment made of hair. The same was true of John the Baptist in Matthew 3:4. That the prophets wore “a rough garment” is apparent also from Zechariah 13:4: “Neither shall they [the false prophets] wear a rough garment [Hebrew, “sahar,” meaning, “a garment of hair”] to deceive;” that is, the false prophets shall not assume the dress of the true prophets for the purpose of deluding the people, or to make them think that they are true prophets.
It is evident, therefore, that this hairy garment was regarded as a dress that pertained particularly to the prophets. It is well known, also, that the ancient Greek philosophers had a special dress to distinguish them from the common people.
The Sackcloth was an upper garment (in Isaiah’s case, worn over a tunic; he was to wear no upper garment, no mantle, cloak, or coat, but only that which was next to him), as slaves and prisoners used to wear, whose posture Isaiah was to represent by the removal of it. He was to lay aside the dress of a mourner (see 2Sa. 3:31), and a preacher of repentance, and to have nothing on but his tunic; and in this, as well as being barefooted, he was to show himself in public. This was the costume of a man who had been robbed and disgraced, or else of a beggar or prisoner of war. Probably the custom of wearing “hair cloth” among the monks of later ages took its rise from this example of the prophets.
Finally then, Isaiah’s removing of this garment was designed to be a sign, or an emblem, to show that the Egyptians (and the northern ten tribes) should be stripped of all their possessions, and carried captive to Assyria.
CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
21:11: “Seir” = Which had its name from Seir the Horite, who first possessed it; and was succeeded in it by Esau and his posterity, the Edomites (see Gen. 14:6; 36:8-9; Deu. 2:12; Eze. 35:2), so that the country of Edom or Idumea is here intended.
21:11-12: “The morning cometh, and also the night” = The true watchman is looking for his Lord’s Second Coming.
“The morning and the night are both at hand -- the opening of endless day to the righteous, the setting down of eternal night to the wicked.” GHA:110.
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
22:2: “thy slain men are not slain with the sword, nor dead in battle.” = Isaiah is prophesying to king Hezekiah of the impending siege coming upon Jerusalem (see verse 7).
CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
23:15: “Tyre shall be forgotten” = Shall cease to be a place of importance in commerce, since it will have been captured by Babylon (see below).
“Seventy years, according to the days of one king” = The Hebrew word used for “king” here is “Lowth,” and may denote a “dynasty,” or “kingdom.” The duration of the Babylonian monarchy was properly but seventy years. Nebuchadnezzar began his conquest in the first year of his reign, and from thence to the taking of Babylon by Cyrus was seventy years later. At that time the nations that had been conquered and subdued by the Babylonians would be restored to liberty.
Tyre was taken toward the middle of that period, and its subjugation referred to here was only for the remaining part of it. This passage becomes clearer when linked with Jeremiah 25:11, in which Jeremiah prophecies: “And this whole land [which includes Tyre] shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.” Of course, some of them were conquered sooner, and some later; but the end of this period was the common time of deliverance to all of them.
In defense of my concept of “king” meaning a “dynasty,” Nebuchadnezzar founded the Babylonian empire and is regarded as its founder. He was succeeded by his son Evil-Merodach, and then his grandson Belshazzar, in whose reign the kingdom terminated. According to Jeremiah 27:7: “And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son’s son.” The period of seventy years (see below) is mentioned several times as a period during which the nations that were to be subjected to Babylonian rule and would be oppressed. After the 70-year period, they would be set at liberty (see also Jer. 46:26).
23:15 & 17: “seventy years” = See Second Chronicles 36:21; Ezra 1:1; Jeremiah 25:11-12; 29:10; Daniel 9:2; Zechariah 1:12; 7:5.

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
23:3: “Sihor” = Meaning “black.” This is referring to the silt and fertility of the Upper Nile river in Egypt.
23:15: “Tyre shall be forgotten” = Shall cease to be a place of importance in commerce, since it will have been captured by Babylon (see below). The destruction of Tyre is one of the things that helped to cause the downfall of Egypt, for most of its goods came from there.
23:15 & 17: “seventy years” = See Second Chronicles 36:21; Ezra 1:1; Jeremiah 25:11-12; 29:10; Daniel 9:2; Zechariah 1:12; 7:5.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR
24:ALL: Chapters 24 & 25 & 26 & 27, are known to most Bible commentators as, “The Little Apocalypse.”
24:1: “maketh the earth empty” = Compare with Jeremiah 4:23-31.
24:5: “because they have transgressed the Laws” = Here is the reasoning for ANY judgment coming from our Lord.
“everlasting covenant” = See my Bible Study: “COVENANTS, THE OLD AND NEW.” Which equals agreeing to keep God’s Law[s].
24:6: “burned” = At the Third Coming of Christ.
24:14: “from the sea” = This echo’s Isaiah 17:5-6.
24:20: “it shall fall, and not rise again” = “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth,” Revelation 21:1.
24:21: “punish the host of the high ones that are on high” = The “that are” is supplied and badly so. For this is a judgment against the evil angels at the Third Coming of Christ, and they are not in Heaven at that time.
24:23: “when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem” = In the “New Jerusalem” after the Third Coming of Christ.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
25:ALL: This Chapter is a hymn.
25:7: “The face of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations” = This veil symbolizes the veil of ignorance that covers the world.
“Such was the prospect that greeted Isaiah when he was called to the prophetic mission; yet he was not discouraged, for ringing in his ears was the triumphal chorus of the angels surrounding the throne of God, ‘The whole earth is full of His glory,’ Isa. 6:3. And his faith was strengthened by visions of glorious conquests by the Church of God, when ‘the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.’ Isa. 11:9. ‘The face of the covering cast over all people, and the veil that is spread over all nations’ (Isa. 25:7), was finally to be destroyed. The Spirit of God was to be poured out upon all flesh. Those that hunger and thirst after righteousness were to be numbered among the Israel of God.” RH, June 17, 1915; PK:371.
25:8: “He will swallow up death in victory” = See First Corinthians 15:54.
25:9: “it shall be said in that day” = “And as Isaiah beholds the Lord of glory descending from Heaven, with all the holy angels, to gather the remnant Church from among the nations of earth, he hears the waiting ones unite in the exultant cry, [verse quoted].” RH, July 1, 1915.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX
26:3: “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” There are a lot of supplied words in the “KJV.” The “Dead Sea Scrolls” puts it this way: “You will keep perfectly peaceful the one whose mind remains focused on You, because he remains in You.” I’m not sure if the translators were influenced by the popular “KJV.” Here it is with very little help: “Thou wilt keep perfect peace the mind stayed, because he trusts in You.”
26:14: “dead, they shall not live. . . destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish” = The term “second death” in the Book of Revelation should be clear enough. But if not, re-read this again. See my Bible Study: “DEATH, THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT.”
26:16: “prayer” = The Hebrew is “lachash,” meaning “whisper.” In other words, “silent or private prayer.”
26:19: “Thy dead men shall live” = See Matthew 27:52. Also, this is Second Coming language.
“The voice of the Son of God is heard calling forth the sleeping saints; and as the prophet beholds them coming from the prison house of death, he exclaims: [verse quoted along with Isa. 35:5-6].” RH, July 1, 1915; PK:728.
26:20: “thy chambers” = “What are the chambers in which they are to hide? They are the protection of Christ and holy angels. The people of God are not at this time all in one place. They are in different companies and in all parts of the earth, and they will be tried singly, not in groups. Everyone must stand the test for himself.” HP:264.
26:21: “no more cover her slain” = This cries of Second and Third Coming language.
CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
27:5: “he may make peace with Me; and he shall make peace with Me” = This is the ONLY place in Scripture where man can “make peace with God,” as opposed to God being the Instigator of that peace.
27:12: “one by one” = Not as a group are we to be saved, but as individuals.
CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
28:10: “precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and ther a little” = Isaiah is giving us a lesson on how to study the Scriptures. In other words, the truth of God is found all throughout the Scriptures and not a particular doctrine can be established in one Chapter alone.
28:11: “stammering lips and another tongue” = “This means those who have not received instruction, but have cherished their own wisdom, and have chosen to work themselves according to their own ideas. The Lord gives these the test, that they shall either take their position to follow His counsel, or refuse and do according to their own ideas, and then the Lord will leave them to the sure result. In all our ways, in all our service to God, He speaks to us, ‘Give Me thine heart.’ It is the submissive, teachable spirit that God wants. That which gives to prayer its excellence is the fact that it is breathed from a loving, obedient heart. God requires certain things of His people. If they say, I will not give up my heart to do this thing, the Lord lets them go on in their supposed wise judgment without Heavenly wisdom until this Scripture is fulfilled.” 20MR:111.
28:13: “line upon line” = Many have access to the Word of God. Many have the Word of God. Most do not “study” the Word of God. There is the old adage, “Give a man a fish and he will have food for a day (and not appreciate it). But teach him to fish and he will now work for his own food.
28:15: “a covenant with death, and with hell” = Here is my Revelation 20:14 Note: Temporal death does not hinder eternal life; for all die (= “death”). However, those who die without loving God (= “death and [those who will go to] hell”) will be “cast into the lake of fire,” which means they will experience “the second death,” equaling never to live again. It is amazing the things that people convene with. They would rather worship anything other than a Holy God.
28:16: “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a Stone” = This is used by Peter to point out what Isaiah already knew in First Peter 2:6-8, that Messiah (Christ) can be counted on and is a “foundation,” not moved, a “tried Stone.”
28:18: “death. . . and. . . hell” = Here is my Revelation 20:14 Note: Temporal death does not hinder eternal life; for all die (= “death”). However, those who die without loving God (= “death and [those who will go to] hell”) will be “cast into the lake of fire,” which means they will experience “the second death,” equaling never to live again.
28:21: “strange work” / “strange act” = The Lord’s “strange work,” “strange act,” is strange to us to think of God as a killer. See Lamentations 3:33.
28:22: “the whole earth” = Apparently everyone knew about this event. Noticing the day or night being extended, depending upon where on the earth you were, is not unimaginable.
28:27: “fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument” = Isaiah is saying, “right tool for the right job.”
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
29:1: “Ariel” = The meaning is, “Lion of God,” and is in reference to Jerusalem.
29:11-12: “[11] one that is learned. . . it is sealed” [12] that is not learned. . . I am not learned” = The first person’s excuse is that the vision of verses 1-10, he could not understand it, because although it he “is learned,” he does not understand it because of his excuse that the vision “is sealed;” which in reality it is not, but they don’t want to serve God. Whereas, the second personage in verse 12’s simple excuse is he “is not learned,” or cannot read, even though it was verbally prophesied to him. Bottom line, they are lying to God.
29:14: “wonder” = When “wonder” ceases, worship ceases.
CHAPTER THIRTY
30:4: “Hanes” = Tanis, in lower Egypt.
30:15: “In returning and rest shall ye be saved” = Return to the Lord and you will find rest and salvation.
30:20: “adversity” = “Often the Church militant is called upon to suffer trial and affliction; for not without severe conflict is the Church to triumph.” RH, July 1, 1915; PK:723.
30:26: “the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold” = In Heaven, for this is when ‘the LORD bindeth up the breach of His people.”
30:27: “devouring fire” = Second Coming language. See Second Thessalonians 2:8.
30:29: “Mighty One” = The Hebrew is “tsur,” which literally means, “Rock.” Thus, it should be translated as, “The Rock of Israel.”
30:33: “Tophet” = Tophet was located in the lowest part of the Valley of Hinnom; on the southern side of Jerusalem. It was a place of burning garbage. However, it was turned into a place of worship to the idol Molech; the god that child sacrifice was offered to. See Second Kings 23:10; Jeremiah 7:31; 19:6 & 11.
“king” = the idol god Molech.
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
31:5: “so will the LORD of host defend Jerusalem” = The LORD is saying, don’t turn to and put your trust in “Egypt for help,” verse 1. By contrast, when Israel did not trust in the LORD, He leaves them to their folly.
“pass over He will preserve” = In Genesis 1:2, when “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters,” this is the same movement as described here.
CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
32:2: “a Man” = “Centuries before the Advent of Christ, Isaiah described Him as a ‘hiding-place from the wind,’ a ‘covert from the tempest,’ as ‘the shadow of a great Rock in a weary land.’ ” 2SP:347.
32:5: “liberal” = Meaning, “generous.” Or possibly, “bountiful.” But “generous” fits best.
“churl” = Literally, a “scoundrel.”
32:9: “careless” = Couldn’t-Care-Less.
CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE
33:1: “when thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled” = The “spoiler” here is Sennacherib, king of Assyria. When Israel finally acknowledges her guilt, it will be too late.
33:8: “he hath broken the covenant” = Sennacherib breaks the “covenant” with Hezekiah.
33:16: “bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure” = HERE IS WHERE BREAD AND WATER ARE PROMISED IN THE TIME OF TROUBLE.
33:20: “not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed” = When an angle wipes out Sennacherib’s army this was true. However, for it to be “ever” more, we must remember that ALL prophecy is conditional upon obedience.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
34:2: “He hath utterly destroyed them, He hath delivered them to the slaughter” = The “Dead Sea Scrolls” has it this way, “He has doomed them to destruction, and given them up to be slaughtered.” This is “Close Of Probation” language.
34:4: “all the host of heaven shall be dissolved” = After the Third Coming of Christ. And then shall there be a New heaven and a new earth.
34:5 & 6: “Idumea” = This is the Greek term for the land of Edom. My Isaiah 21:11 Note, makes them out to be “dumb.” It is also used a a term implying all the enemies of Israel.
34:6: “Bozrah” = Meaning a place of narrow passage. Where one could be trapped.
34:7: “unicorn” = A “rhinoceros.” ST, December 9, 1880.
34:14: “satyr” = Here is my Isaiah 13:21 Note: “satyrs” = No one really knows what this is.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
35:2: “It shall blossom abundantly” = “The missionary activities of the Church of God on earth are bearing rich fruitage, and soon the gospel message will have been proclaimed to all nations.” RH, March 18, 1915; PK:313.
35:3: “Strengthen ye” = “The day of wrath to the enemies of God is the day of final deliverance to His Church.” RH, July 1, 1915; PK:727; Mar:279.
35:8: “the highway” = Of the Lord. For “strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” Matthew 7:14.
CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
36:7: “whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away” = Rabshakeh had misunderstood, in that he thought Hezekiah had torn down the altars to force the people to worship at Jerusalem. He was not spiritually minded enough to understand that this honored the true God. He didn’t realize the difference in gods and God. Thus, because he refused to believe in the One True God, he thought that the tearing down of the altars had offended the gods he worshiped.
CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
37:7: “Behold” = The “Dead Sea Scrolls” has this intriguing phrase, “Watch this.” In other words, “Watch what the Great I Am is going to do.”
37:16: “that dwellest between the cherubims” = The word “between is a supplied word but may be correct. If so, this would be in the Most Holy Place.
37:23: “against the Holy One of Israel” = Bible students should know this answer to the previous question before reading it here.
37:36: “smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand” = According to the Rabis, there were 250,000 soldiers. Keep in mind only “one angel” did this.
CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
38:5: “I will add unto thy days fifteen years” = Be careful what you ask for. It is after this that Hezekiah shows the Babylonian princes the riches of the temple (Isa. 39:2), which they later pillage. His son Manasseh is born and later has Isaiah cut in half, and turned out to be one of the most wicked kings of Israel (2Ki. 21:2).
38:8: “ten degrees backward” = This account makes it seem as though God made the decision to send the sun “backward.” However, according to Second Kings 20:10, it was Hezekiah who requested it so.
38:18: “the grave cannot praise Thee” = The dead are dead. They neither go to Heaven or hell at death. See my Bible Study: “DEATH, THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT.” Consider, if you die and go to Heaven at death, are you seriously and honestly going to tell me you will not praise God when there?
38:20: “all the days of our life” = “Restored to his wonted strength, the king of Judah acknowledged in words of song the mercies of Jehovah, and vowed to spend his remaining days in willing service to the King of kings.” RH, May 6, 1915; PK:342.
CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE
39:2: “shewed them the house of his precious things” = Big mistake. Pride goeth before the fall. Proverbs 16:8.
39:8: “For there shall be peace and truth in my days” = This may explain the change in Hezekiah’s attitude before given the extra fifteen years. For this statement is pure selfishness.
CHAPTER FORTY
40:1: “Comfort ye, comfort ye” = Notice that “Comfort ye, comfort ye” is twice repeated to give a double assurance. Having announced the coming captivity of the Jewish Nation in Babylon, God now desires His servants, the prophets, to comfort them. Read Isaiah 52:7.
40:2: “comfortably” = The Hebrew word in verse 2, translated in the KJV as “comfortably,” is comprised in two words, i.e., “al leb,” which brings with it the implication to speak to the heart of the people. In other words, God wanted His prophets to speak comfortable words that would reach down into the hearts of the people of Jerusalem, God’s Holy city.
40:3: “voice of him that crieth in the wilderness” = A four of the Gospels refer to this verse as applying to John the Baptist.
40:4: “shall be exalted” = The spiritual application as applied to man points to the encouragement of those that are cast down, the humiliation of the self-righteous and self-secure, the changing of dishonesty into simplicity, and of unapproachable haughtiness into submission. In general then, the meaning is that Israel is to take care that the God Who is coming to deliver them is to find them in such an inward and outward state of character as is appropriate to His exaltation and His purposes in man’s life.
“every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain” = In the days of the kings, ruff, pot-holed and rock-filled roads, servants were sometimes sent ahead of the king to level the surfaces of roadways and to take out sharp turns so as to smooth the way for the king. So, in fulfillment of prophecy, John the Baptists came before Christ in order to prepare the hearts of the people for Jesus.
40:5: “it” = What is the “it” that they shall see? Many believe that Isaiah 52:10 is related to this verse.
40:6: “All flesh is grass” = In regards to all flesh being as grass the connection is that anything to do with humanity, however goodly, is transitory and only God’s promises alone will stand and be steadfast.
40:7: “spirit of the Lord” = As the “spirit,” or the “breath” of God the Creator is used in the generating of life, and in the sustaining of life, so it is that when the “spirit,” or “breath” returns to God, life is destroyed, just like that of the eastern winds of Israel that blast the Palestinian flower, destroying its life.
40:18 & 25: “whom then will ye liken God” = “The Jews, after their long captivity, would not make any image. The image on the Roman ensign or banner, they called an abomination, especially when their emblems were placed in a prominent place for them to respect. Such respect they regarded as a violation of the Second Commandment. When the Roman ensign was set up in the Holy Place in the temple, they looked upon it as an abomination.” 4BC:1145; 2SAT:182.
40:22: “circle of the earth” = The Hebrew word for “circle” here is “chug,” meaning “circle, sphere.” Well before man questioned this earth being round, in the 14th century, around the time of Christopher Columbus, men of God had prophesied that it was. And in Job 26:7, Job knew that God “hangeth the earth upon nothing.”
“that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain” = This explains how we see light from the distant stars (they were at first not that distant). See Job 9:8; Psalm 104:2; Jeremiah 10:12; Zechariah 12:1. See also Isaiah 45:12.
40:27: “Why sayest thou” = “To those who feared they would not be received if they should return to God, the prophet declared: [verses 27-31 quoted].” RH, March 25, 1915; PK:316.
CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
41:2: “righteous man from the east” = This is speaking of Cyrus the Great. He is listed as “righteous” because he inflicts justice upon God unrepentant people, Israel.
41:4: “the first, and with the last, I am He” = That this is Jesus Christ, especially when speaking to a Jehovah’s Witness, first go here; then Isaiah 44:6; then 48:12; then Revelation 1:11; then Revelation 11:17; then Revelation 22:13; then the kicker, Revelation 2:8. Still again, Revelation 1:8.
41:10: “Fear thou not” = “The heart of Infinite love yearns after those who feel powerless to free themselves from the snares of Satan; and He graciously offers to strengthen them to live for Him.” RH, March 25, 1915; PK:318; CC:235.
41:12: “shalt not find them. . . as a thing of nought” = The unrighteous dead will eventually turn to “ashes,” Malachi 4:3. See my Bible Study: “DEATH, THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT.”
CHAPTER FORTY-TWO
42:2: “nor cause His voice to be heard in the street” = “The voice of Christ was not heard in the street, in noisy contention with those who were opposed to His doctrine. Neither was His voice heard in the street in prayer to His Father, to be heard of men. His voice was not heard in joyful mirth. His voice was not raised to exalt Himself, and to gain the applause and flattery of men. When engaged in teaching, He withdrew His disciples away from the noise and confusion of the busy city to some retired place more in harmony with the lessons of humility, piety, and virtue, which He would impress upon their minds.” 2SP:30; RH, Dec. 31, 1872.
42:3: “A bruised reed. . . smoking flax” = Here is my Matthew 12:20 Note: This comes from Isaiah 42:3. The reed is an emblem of feebleness, as well as of fickleness or want of stability (see Mat. 11:7). Therefore, “A bruised reed” would be in even a worse condition, such as Pharaoh, in Egypt, who couldn’t even help himself, let alone anyone else (see 2Ki. 18:21).
“smoking flax” = This refers to the wick of a lamp when the oil is exhausted. This person is on their last breath (last chance to repent).
But Isaiah 42:3 is really about Jesus not “break[ing] a bruised reed” or “quench[ing] a smoking flax.” In other words, Jesus is so compassionate that He is careful not to “bruise” unnecessarily someone who was just coming to faith, or to “quench” the slightest embers of faith in their hearts. Yet He shall “bring forth judgment unto truth,” -- be a righteous Judge and punish those that need to be punished, and bless those who are forgiven.
42:6: “for a light of the Gentiles” = See Isaiah 11:10; Luke 2:32; Acts 13:47-48; Romans 15:12; Ephesians 1:23.
42:21: “He will magnify the Law” = “To magnify is to make larger, to raise to a higher position. Christ magnified the Law by showing in every part its wonderful meaning. He showed that it is to be obeyed, not only in the actions, which are seen by men, but in the thoughts, which are known only to God.” GHA:56; SJ:70.
CHAPTER FORTY-THREE
43:4: “therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life” = This is better understood by reading Proverbs 21:18: “The wicked shall be a ransom for the righteous, and the transgressor for the upright.”
43:7: “I have created him for My glory” = According to this verse: MAN WAS CREATED FOR GOD’S GLORY.
43:10: “before Me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after Me” = We need to realize the exclusiveness that God is placing upon His creation.
Isaiah 43:11; Hosea 13:4: “beside Me there is no saviour” = Since we know that Jesus is our one and Only “Saviour,” than it stands to reason that Christ is the One stating this. See Luke 2:11.
43:14: “Chaldeans” = This prophecy is about one hundred years even before Babylon rises to power.
43:16: “a path in the mighty waters” = Echoed in Psalm 8:8. Matthew Fontaine Maury, regarded as the “Father of Oceanography,” upon reading this passage, devoted his life to finding the “paths,” and found them.
43:26: “let us plead together” = See Isaiah 1:18.
CHAPTER FORTY-FOUR
44:2: “Jesurun” = This is just a poetical name for Israel. Meaning, “The upright ones.”
44:6: “I am the first, and I am the last; and beside Me there is no God” = See Isaiah 41:4 (43:10-11). That this is Jesus Christ, especially when speaking to a Jehovah’s Witness, first go to 41:4; then go here; then Isaiah 44:6; then 44:8; then Revelation 1:11; then Revelation 11:17; then Revelation 22:13; then the kicker, Revelation 2:8. Still again, Revelation 1:8.
44:8: “Is there a God beside Me? Yea, there is no God; I know not any” = Again and again God is hammering this FACT home. See Isaiah 43:10-11 again.
44:23: “Sing” = It has been stated that, “Nowhere in the Bible can you find were angels sing.” Here is a place.
“God’s gift of Christ to man filled all Heaven with amazement, and inspired at his birth the angelic song, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.’ ” RH, December 11, 1879.
44:28: “That saith of Cyrus” = This is written about 150 years before Cyrus is even born. Jerusalem and the Temple has yet to be destroyed.
“to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid” = Under Cyrus the Great, the Jews were allowed to back to Jerusalem with material to rebuild the destroyed Temple. See my Isaiah 21:2 Note.
CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE
45:1: “anointed” = The Hebrew word for “anointed” here is “mashiyach,” the word from which we get the word “Messiah.” Elsewhere in the Old Testament, this word could refer to an anointed high priest (Lev. 4:3 & 5 & 16; 6:22),an anointed Israelite king (1Sa. 16:6; 24:6 & 10; 2Sa. 22:51), or the Messiah, a future ideal Davidic king and deliverer (Psa. 2:2; Dan 9:25, 26). Cyrus is given this title because he ultimately does God’s Will, whether or not he knew of It. Doing the right thing has merit with God.
“loose the loins of kings” = This prophecy was fulfilled when Belshazzar, king of Babylon, by the handwriting on the wall, was thrown into a panic; “and the joints of his loins were loosed,” Daniel 5:6.
“to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut” = Babylon was considered impregnatable. But Daniel, Chapter 5, tells how it was not.
45:4: “I have surnamed thee” = Later, when Cyrus reads this, 150 years later, he (you should be) had to be amazed.
45:5 & 6: “[5] I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside Me [6] that there is none beside Me. I am the LORD, and there is none else” = Again and again God is hammering this FACT home. See Isaiah 43:10-11 & 44:8 again.
45:7: “I form the light, and create darkness” = Here is my Genesis 1:14-19 Note: “day” = The use of the word “day” in these verses alludes to the fact that a 24-hour period of time equals one day and is established by another fact that it existed before there was even a sun or moon, which were created on day 4.
In an interesting point made in Isaiah 45:7, i.e., “I form the light, and create darkness,” our Lord tells us that He had to “create darkness.” This makes perfect sense, in that our Lord is surrounded by light and most likely this light fills the entire universe. Therefore, He would have had to “create darkness” in order for there to be any “darkness” at all.
“create evil” = Note that the verse does not say, “created evil,” but “create evil,” or in other words, God causes or allows “peace” or “evil” depending upon the obedience of His people. The text becomes clearer in its cross-reference, Amos 3:6: “Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the Lord hath not done it?” However, the reason for God causing “evil in a city” is found in verse two of Amos, Chapter 3: “I will punish you for all your iniquities.” See also Habakkuk 1:13; Second Timothy 2:13; Titus 1:2; James 1:13; First John 1:5.
In life and the majority of the Bible, opposites are true. Where there was darkness, God added light. When God sad that everything He had created was good, He also exposed the fact that evil was in existence. Some Christians are either hot or cold.
The Hebrew word for “create” is “H1254; bara,” and as you can see from this verse alone, it depends upon the context as to whether or not we should consider the entity to be the Creator, as in originator, or as in the instigator or cause of. “I form [bara] the light, and create [bara] darkness: I make [bara] peace, [just as He also “allows” evil, or punishment because He loves us] and create [“bara,” a better translation would have been “make”] evil: I the Lord do [bara] all these things.”
So, we can see that the reason for God to “create [make; or allow] evil” is for judgmental purposes and in order to encourage His people to come back to following Him.
Another way to think of it is that the Hebrew for “evil” is “H7451; ra’ah” and is most often translated as “evil.” By contrast, it is also translated as “trouble, displeasure, sorrow, wretchedness, adversity, afflictions, calamities,” and most likely, because we are talking about a “Loving” God (1Jo. 4:8) it should have been translated as such in this verse. As such, the concept is not one of morality, where our God is given the moral responsibility of “creating evil,” but rather, that He allows it when His people are going astray in an effort to bring them to their senses.
God “created,” or better, “caused” the “evil” only in the sense that He made “trouble, wretchedness, etcetera,” to be the sure fruits of sin, such that man could better understand his error it choosing that way of life. And just as in this case, people who fight with this verse tend to forget or ignore, that our Lord also forms the “light,” which also means that all comforts and peacefulness also comes from His hand.
More than just the light of nature, our Lord forms the moral light, or the rational understanding in man; spiritual light; or the light of grace, by which things spiritual and supernatural are known; the light of joy and consolation from Christ, Who is the Son of Righteousness; and the light of eternal glory and happiness. Therefore, darkness is His creature [or creation], just like natural darkness which was upon the face of the earth at the beginning. It is what arises from the absence of the sun, until the true Son of righteousness is in one’s own life.
The fact that “I the Lord do all these things,” is therefore substantial proof that He must be the true God. Still another way to think of it is that these words are directed to Cyrus, king of Persia, and must be understood as spoken in reference to the Persian sect of the magicians who then held that light and darkness, or good and evil, were the possession of the supreme beings, without acknowledging the great and only Supreme Being; our God as being superior to all. Therefore, the Hebrew word “bara” carries with it the inference that this Supreme Being is able to “create” something from nothing, as at the beginning of our world; while the magicians can create nothing.
Thus, Isaiah refers also to the Oriental belief in two coexistent, eternal principalities, ever struggling with each other, light or good, darkness or evil, always in opposition to each other. By contrast, Isaiah asserts the true God as having sovereignty over both, any, or all, because He is the Only One, any, or all. Proof thenceforth is furnished that “Yahweh” is the true God. In fact, the passage could be limited to this interpretation and design; the statement being that all of these things are under His direction.
A fascinating thought and Biblical truth is, that “God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all,” First John 1:5, and therefore He had to “create darkness” in order for there to be darkness anywhere in the cosmos at all [since God is omnipresent].
Thus, the passage does not prove that God is the author of moral evil, or sin, or “evil” for the sake of “evil,” and such a sentiment is abhorrent to the general strain of the Bible and to all just views of the character of a Holy, Loving God; “for God is Love,” First John 4:8.
45:11: “and His Maker” = The Hebrew is, “yatser,” literally meaning “and the Maker of them,” or better understood as (but not a literal translation), “Israel’s Maker.”
45:12: “stretched out the heavens” = This explains how we see light from the distant stars (they were at first not that distant). See Job 9:8; Psalm 104:2; Jeremiah 10:12; Zechariah 12:1. See also Isaiah 40:22.
45:13: “him up” = Back to speaking of Cyrus the Great.
45:18: “not in vain” = The Hebrew is “tohu,” meaning, “without form.” In other words, God created the earth from nothing.
“He formed it to be inhabited” = God wants your company.
“I am the LORD; and there is none else” = Do you understand this yet? Again and again God is hammering this FACT home. See Isaiah 43:10-11; 44:8; 45:5-6 again.
45:21-22: “[21] and there is no God else beside Me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside Me [22] I amGod, and there is none else” = Again and again God is hammering this FACT home. See Isaiah 43:10-11 & 44:8; 45:5-6; 45:18 again.

CHAPTER FORTY-SIX
46:1: “Bel” = The same as Ba-al.
“Nebo” = Meaning, “a talker.” A Babylonian god.
46:9: “I am God; and there is none else” = Again and again God is hammering this FACT home. See Isaiah 43:10-11 & 44:8 & 45:5-6 again.
46:10: “Declaring the end from the beginning” = This is one of the main reasons we can know that the Bible is the Word of God, in that It writes history before it happens with a precision that is unmatched. God doesn’t necessarily give us prophecy the define the future. He gives us prophecy to define its Source. You can know it is Divine.
CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN
47:3: “I will not meet thee as a man” = God is coming with all His power to exact vengeance upon idyllic Babylon; remembering that this will not take place for another 100 years or so; for Babylon is just a little settlement at this time.
47:8 & 10: “[8] that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me [10] thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me” = Are you kidding me? Again and again God is hammering this FACT that He alone has this title. See Isaiah 43:10-11 & 44:8. But Babylon has the audacity to claim to be or have Divine attributes!
CHAPTER FORTY-EIGHT
48:9 & 11: “[9] For My Name’s sake [11] For Mine Own sake” = “The inhabitants of Judah were all undeserving, yet God would not give them up. By them His name was to be exalted among the heathen. Many who were wholly unacquainted with His attributes, were yet to behold the glory of the divine character. It was for His name’s sake that He kept sending His servants the prophets.” RH, March 25, 1915; PK:319.
48:12: “I am He; I am the first, I also am the last” = That this is Jesus Christ, especially when speaking to a Jehovah’s Witness, first go to Isaiah 41:4; then Isaiah 44:6; then here; then Revelation 1:11; then Revelation 11:17; then Revelation 22:13; then the kicker, Revelation 2:8. Still Again, Revelation 1:8.
48:16: “there am I: and now the Lord God, and His Spirit, hath sent Me” = Herein lies the Trinity: “there am I [the Speaker; Jesus, The Christ]: and now the Lord God [God The Father], and His Spirit [God The Holy Spirit], hath sent Me [ the Speaker; Jesus, The Christ].”
CHAPTER FORTY-NINE
49:6: “I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be My salvation unto the end of the earth” = Here was the purpose of Israel; here they were to show the world what they must do in order to be saved; yet Israel failed herself. See my Bible Studies: “ISRAEL, THE RETURN OF.” And “ISRAEL’S REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY DOCTRINE.”
49:12: “Sinim” = This is China, according to Hudson Taylor, the renowned missionary to inland China. The Chinese Bible translates this name as “Qin Guo,” (English rendering), meaning, China. For, “Qin” emerged as one of the 14 major states. It was not until almost 500 years after Isaiah prophesied this, that the “Qin” dynasty was established, and the name “Qin” represented the Middle Kingdom of China. According to the Bible Commentator John Gill (“An Exposition of the Old Testament”), Ptolemy, an Egyptian scientist and geographer (90-168 A.D.), identified “Sinim” as China.
This prophecy is speaking of a gathering of the people of God from the entire earth.
49:16: “Thy walls are continually before Me” = What are walls for? For protection. He knows the weaknesses of our own walls. Thus, He protects where we are weak.
CHAPTER FIFTY
50:4; “morning by morning” = Our Lord’s way of saying “continually.”
50:6: “My cheeks to them that plucked off the hair” = They ripped of Christ’s beard. There are occasions where Jesus was not recognized by those He was with after He was resurrected (examples are: Luke 24:15-16; 36-37; John 20:14-15), and He had to show them His “hands,” and His “side,” and His “feet,” Luke 24:39-40; John 20:20 & 25 & 27, in order for them to accept that it was He that was talking with them. My conjecture here is that we may have a clue as to why they did not. If someone you know has always worn a beard and they were to shave it off, you most likely would not recognize them except by their movements and actions; like the breaking of the bread in Luke 24:31, when the two disciples recognized Jesus from His behaviors. According to John the Revelator, he did not even recognize Jesus in Heaven, for he sees Jesus as He “stood a Lamb as it had been slain.”
Note that the Lamb is standing. Isaiah is more explicit in 52:14: “His visage was so marred more than any man, and His form more than the sons of men.” The “KJV” is kind in that the literal rendering is so terrible: “His visage, so marred from the form of man was His aspect, that His appearance was not that of a son of man,” i.e., not recognizable from the effects of the appalling brutalities described in Matthew 26:67 and Matthew 27:27-30. Thus, my conjecture here is that since our Lord kept the scars of the nails in His “hands” and “side” and “feet,” so also His face without a beard and the scaring that that would produce.
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONE
51:3: “will make her wilderness like Eden” = A description of Heaven is going on here.
51:9: “Rahab” = Here is my Psalm 89:10 Note: This equals Egypt. The reference here is to the Exodus of the Hebrew people, when God destroyed the power of Egypt (see Psa. 87:4). The “Targum” explains it as, “Rahab or the proud one, this is Pharaoh the wicked.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO
52:4; “the Assyrian” = This equals the Egyptian Pharoah, who was at that time of the Exodus, an Assyrian. Steven, in Acts 7:18 (34-36), refers to the fact that Pharoah was “of a different kind.” Here is my Acts 7:18 Note: “another king arose” = In the Greek there are to ways to say “another.” The Greek word “allos” means, “one of the same kind; or another of the same kind.” But “heteros” means, “one of a different kind; or another of a different kind.” By Seven using the later, he is letting us know that the Egyptian Pharoah of the Exodus of verses 34-36, was of Assyrian background.
52:5: “My name continually every day is blasphemed” = “Because of the weakness and apostasy of Israel and Judah, the name of God was no longer feared among the nations, but had become a subject for continual blasphemy.” RH, May 27, 1915; PK:352.
52:6: “behold, it is I” = “To the prophet was given a revelation of the beneficent design of God in scattering impenitent Judah among the nations of earth. [Verse quoted]. And not only were they themselves to learn the lesson of obedience and trust; in their places of exile they were also to impart to others a knowledge of the living God.” RH, June 17, 1915; PK:371.
52:12: “For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward” = This is a clear reference to the Exodus (see Exo. 12:39), but this new Exodus will not be “with haste, nor go by flight.” Not sure how this plays out. I need more insight.
52:13-53:12: This section is known as the “Suffering Servant Poem.”
52:14: “His visage” = See my Isaiah 50:6 Note.
CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE
53:ALL: It is interesting to note that this Chapter is never read in any Jewish synagogue, even though they may contest this remark by stating the truth that it is in their Pentateuch. However, there are two Jewish groups (belief systems in Judaism today). One is the Ashkenazi, and the other is the Sephardic Jews. The Ashkenazi actually remove this portion (what we know as Chapter 53) from their Bibles, for it cannot be true of a triumphant Messiah (the flavor of which is brought out in the previous Chapters). However, in 1947, when the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered and translated, the Sephardic Jews had vindication of their Bibles being whole and the Ashkenazi were embarrassed.
Also, the prophet Jeremiah, in 11:19, applies the prophecy of Isaiah, Chapter 53, to an individual. Thus establishing the prophecy of Isaiah to the foretold Messiah that would be persecuted by the people of Israel. Even more telling, is that it points out a rejected prophet – singular -- by the Jews. I point this out because the Jewish people do not believe in the New Testaments affirmation of Isaiah, Chapter 53, as pertaining to Jesus. Therefore, the confirmation from Jeremiah is very relevant.
The two strongest arguments of Jewish rabbis is one (1), that since the “servant of the LORD equals the Jewish nation in Isaiah 41:8; 44:1 & 21; 45:4, therefore the “servant of the LORD” in Isaiah 52:13 & 53:11-12, must refer to that nation. Then two (2) in Isaiah 53:1-12, the Gentile nations confess that “Israel is the servant of the LORD.”
The problem with these arguments is that this would make the nation of Israel as becoming the Messiah and dying for the Gentiles sins. This would make our God out to be immoral; calling into question the justice of God.
There is a Rabbinic principle known as “Ma’asei Avot Siman Labanim,” which translates as, “The deads of the fathers, are signs for the sons.” This is also used as a Biblical principle called “Narrative Analogy.” An example would be that when Abraham was in Egypt, Pharoah asked him to leave; which correlates to the Exodus of Israel from Egypt during Moses’ time. Thus, it is understood that Isaiah intentionally compares the first Exodus of Israel from Egypt with the future redemption of Israel. Therefore, Isaiah, Chapters 53 and 54, are seen as Israels grand Exodus.
Isaiah 52:13 through 53:12 is called, “The Fourth Servant Psalm.” In Isaiah 52:10-12 are the verses that exalt the “Servant” that shows up in Isaiah 53:12. They are filled with illusions to the Mosaic Exodus. Exampled are, Isaiah 52:10 to Exodus 14:13; Isaiah 52:11 to Exodus 12:31; Isaiah 52:12a to Exodus 12:11; Isaiah 52:12b to Exodus 13:21a; Isaiah 52:12c to Exodus 14:19. In observation, Isaiah is quoting the Mosaic Exodus as a build up to the final Exodus, in which the Messiah Comes. This is a/the prophetic pattern.
Exodus 14:29-31 is the climax of the Mosaic Exodus. Then we have Joshua (4:12-14) exiting the wilderness into the promised land; which many Rabbis regard as a reference to the crossing of the Red Sea; in reference to the exaltation of Moses and then Joshua. Thus, in the build up by Isaiah of a prophet like Moses, we can be looking for a Coming Savior (Messiah). Now we can better understand Isaiah 52:10-13.
The Exodus ends with a new song (Exo. 15:1); just as Isaiah, Chapter 53, ends in a new song (Isa. 54:1). Thus, Isaiah, Chapter 53, hast to apply to the new Moses, the Savior of Israel (the world). However, some object at this point that the Messiah of Isaiah is “Cyrus,” in Isaiah 45:1.
Throughout Scripture the term “Messiah” is used as a technical term for Israel’s great eschatological redeemer. It is most often used in a non-technical sense to refer to any king, and or, a priest, either good or bad. Examples are Leviticus 4:3 & 5 & 18; First Samuel 24:7. It just means anointed. Thus, calling “Cyrus” a “Messiah” does not make him the ultimate Messiah/Savior of Israel. Compare Exodus 8:22 to Isaiah 45:3, “that you may know that I, the LORD/God.” The exact same phrase. Thus, since “Cyrus” is the new Pharoah, the suffering Survant of Isaiah, Chapter 53, has to be the new Moses; the Coming Messiah.
To try to deny that Isaiah never speaks of the Messiah as “suffering,” see Isaiah 50:6-7. Also, most assume that it is a prophecy of Israel’s rejection of the Messiah. Rather, it is about Israel’s realization that the Man Whom they rejected was actually their promised Messiah. Compare with Exodus 4:1. Then, let the day come when what is spelled out in the last verse (31).
“This Chapter [Isaiah 53] should be studied. It presents Christ as the Lamb of God. Those who are lifted up with pride, whose souls are filled with vanity, should look upon this picture of their Redeemer, and humble themselves in the dust. The entire Chapter should be committed to memory. Its influence will subdue and humble the soul defiled by sin and uplifted by self-exaltation.” 4BC:1147.
53:1: “Who hath believed our report?” = No matter the evidence, no matter the truth, don’t confuse those who don’t want the facts with the facts. See Joh 12:38-40.
53:2: “He hath no form nor comeliness” = “Before Christ left Heaven and came into the world to die, He was taller than any of the angels. He was majestic and lovely. But when His ministry commenced, He was but little taller than the common size of men then living upon the earth. Had He come among men with His noble, heavenly form, His outward appearance would have attracted the minds of the people to Himself, and He would have been received without the exercise of faith.” RH, December 31, 1872.
“no beauty that we should desire Him” = “. . . they discerned in Him no beauty that they should desire Him.” PK:710.
53:5: “bruised” = The Hebrew word translated “bruised,” is “daka.” In the context of the Hebrew it carries with it the idea that Christ was the most beaten up of all.
“Christ was hated by evil men because His character was spotless, His works righteous.” RH, September 20, 1881 par. 2.
53:6: “All. . . us all” = The Hebrew for “All” and for “us all” is “cullanu” in both places. The concept is that “All” our sins in this text are “all” placed upon Christ, completely, none missing, totally covered by His blood.
“iniquity” = The Hebrew word used here and elsewhere in the Book of Isaiah, is “Avon,” which translates to “Moral Sin.” Thus, we learn from this particular passage that there is NO SIN of which our Lord cannot cover. Praise God. See Second Corinthians 5:21.
53:8: “He was taken from prison and from judgment” = The “prison” of death “He was taken from,” through the power of the resurrection. And “from judgment,” in that no sin was found in Him.
53:10: “bruise” = See my verse 5 note, then understand that again, the Hebrew word translated “bruise” is “daka,” and really means, “too crush.” It is a primitive root of “dakah,” meaning, “to crumble; transitively to bruise (either literally or figuratively), as in to beat to pieces, to break (in pieces), to crush, destroy, humble, oppress, to smite.
“He shall see His seed” = Obviously Jesus did not have any physical “seed.” Therefore, this can only refer to spiritual “seed;” those who shall believe upon Him as the true Messiah. Else, if you must believe Jesus somehow had physical children from which the Scriptures are silent, then you and I are not in a position to be saved; still waiting upon His “seed.”

CHAPTER FIFTY- FOUR
54:1: “for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife” = The “married wife” would be Israel. Therefore, “the desolate” would be the Gentiles.
54:3: “thy Seed shall inherit the Gentiles” = The “Seed” of Israel would be Christ.
54:8: “I hid My face from thee” = Even our God will not be around sin without a reprieve.
CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE
55:1: “he that hath no money; come ye, buy” = What our Lord offers cannot be bought with money. However, what He does offer will cost you your undivided (individuality) attention and love. It will cost you everything to follow Him.
55:4: “Leader” = Referring to Christ; see (H5057) Daniel 9:25 & 26 & 27, where it is translated as “Prince.”
55:6: “Seek ye the LORD while He may be found” = Here is my Psalm 32:6 Note: “in a time when Thou mayest be found” = This same expression is found in Isaiah 55:6: “Seek ye the LORD while He may be found.” The implication in both places is that there is a time when He cannot be found. By contrast, the “Targum” states this passage as, “in an acceptable time.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX
56:5: “an everlasting name” = Revelation 2:17 & 3:12, talk of “overcomers” receiving a “new name” in Heaven.
CHAPTER FIFTY-SEVEN
57:10: “There is no hope” = For people that do these things.
CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT
58:1: “shew My people their transgression” = “God said to Isaiah, ‘Show My people their transgression’ -- Let their sins appear as they are, whether or not they confess them, that the message of reproof sent them may be vindicated, and that God’s faithfulness in warning them and condemning their wrong course of action may be shown.” GHA:105.
58:1-2: “Yet they seek Me daily” = “Here is brought to view a class who think themselves righteous, and appear to manifest great interest in the service of God; but the stern and solemn rebuke of the Searcher of hearts proves them to be trampling upon the divine precepts.” 4SP:285.
58:7: “cast out” = The margin for “cast out” is “afflicted.” The Hebrew is “marud,” which is a masculine noun indicating “restlessness, wandering, homelessness.” See my Bible Study (Under SDA): “EGW ON THE POOR AMONG US.”
“It is impossible for you to fasten upon the arm of God with one hand, while the other is employed in administering to your own pleasure.” RH, August 16, 1881 par. 18.
“hide not thyself from thine own flesh” = “No one can practice real benevolence without self-denial. Only by a life of simplicity, self-denial, and close economy is it possible for us to accomplish the work appointed us as Christ’s representatives. Pride and worldly ambition must be put out of our hearts. In all our work the principle of unselfishness revealed in Christ’s life is to be carried out. Upon the walls of our homes, the pictures, the furnishings, we are to read, ‘Bring the poor that are cast out to thy house.’ On our wardrobes we are to see written, as with the finger of God, ‘Clothe the naked.’ In the dining room, on the table laden with abundant food, we should see traced, ‘Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry?’ ” MH:206.
58:8: “Then shall thy light break forth” = “If the mind is free and happy, from a consciousness of right-doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others, it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system, causing a freer circulation of the blood, and a toning up of the entire body.” ST, January 27, 1909; CTBH:13; 1MCP:59.
58:12: “The repairer of the breach” = “This prophecy refers to the Fourth Commandment, which has been broken down and laid waste.” 3ST:43.
“What is this breach? -- It is the broken Sabbath of the Lord.” ST, June 12, 1893.
58:13: “If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath” = “ ‘If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath’ (no longer trample it under your feet).” 17MR:8.
“doing thy pleasure” = The Hebrew word for “pleasure here is “hepes,” which signifies delight in or (in an unrealized sense) a desire for earthly goods, such as Solomon’s desire for timber (1Ki. 5:8-10, 22-24]); a delight in fruitful land (Mal. 3:12); or the delight of hands in their own labor (Pro. 31:13). The word can also refer to people’s delight in God’s Law (Psa. 1:2); and His Works (Psa. 111:2). The point is, leave off earthly pursuits for one day a week and worship the Lord Who made the week.
The “Damascus Document,” which is a Jewish interpretation (commentary) of Scripture, in 10:17-19 (par. 4q270 6v 3-4), in resighting it definition of Isaiah 58:13, states it this way: “[17] And on the Sabbath, et no man speak [18] A vile and empty word: He shall not demand any payment from his fellow; [19] He shall not enter into a dispute concerning money or profit; [20 19] He shall not speak about matters relating to work and labor that need to be done on the following morning.” Jassen, Alex P. “Scripture and Law in the Dead Sea Scrolls (p.73).” “Cambridge University Press. Kindle Edition.”
Therefore, early Jewish tradition believed this verse meant that, you were not allowed to work, you were not allowed to talk about work, and you are not allowed to speak anything in anger. The “Targum,” on speaking, renders it this way, “And from speaking words of wickedness.”
Even as early back as 474 A.D., the Church fathers interpreted the meaning of this text as, “So no one might be willing to send one word out of his mouth in anger on the day of the Sabbath.” According to James Donaldson, in his work, “The Ante-Nicene Father, Volume 7.” See also “Buffalo: Christian Literature Company, 1886.”
To speak in anger, according to Rabbinical tradition, means to light a fire where it could have been easily dismissed.
“delight” = The Hebrew is “oneg,” which implies more than just “delight,” but an “exquisite delight; a luxury or extravagance of delight.”
CHAPTER FIFTY-NINE
59:2: “your iniquities have separated between you and your God” = One of the most profound statements in the Bible. Sin does not necessarily drive God away from us; but it for sure drives us away from God. But you say, “Well all have sinned, Romans 3:23.” Redemption, although based on a lack of sin, knows that sin has occurred in everyone’s life; and therefore it must be based on forgiveness for that sin (Jer. 31:34), with the redeeming blood of Christ.
59:17: “was clad” = See Ephesians 6:13-17, to see what you should be “clad” with. Fear the Lord in this passage that is “clad” for vengeance against those who oppressed the helpless.
CHAPTER SIXTY
60:6: “gold and incense” = The Magi brought to Jesus as gifts three items (Mat. 2:11). After the Millennium, Myrrh, which speaks of Christ’s death, and that is past, will not be needed.
60:7: “Kedar” = Was the second son of Ishmael (Gen. 25:13; 1Ch. 1:29).
“Nebaioth” = Was the firstborn son of (Gen. 25:13; 1Ch. 1:29). The point is, according to “John Gills Commentary on the Old Testament,” “Ishmael’s twelve sons, of which Nebaioth was the eldest, inhabited all the country from Euphrates to the Red sea, calling it the Nabatene country, as Josephus (Antiquities I, 1. c. 12, Section 4) says; these design the Turks and Saracens, who shall now be converted.” The “Targum” states it is such, "all the sheep of the Arabians shall be gathered unto thee.''
60:10: “sons of strangers” = This speaks of the favor Cyrus the Great would have upon the Jews.
60:11: “forces of the Gentiles” = The Hebrew for “forces” is, “chayil,” which here would be better translated as “wealth.” See Isaiah 61:6.
60:12: “nation and kingdom” = Here is my First Kings 18:10 Note: What is the difference between a “nation” or a “kingdom?” I believe our Lord is attempting to point out something very important here and everywhere else He mentions a “nation or kingdom” in the same sentence or phrase. When God mentions “nation” in this phrase He is meaning those composed of mankind. By contrast, when He mentions “kingdom” in the same phrase, He means the spiritual realm which is composed of those who Satan drew away from God and those who are loyal to God. In fact, when speaking of “nations,” God’s Word is not nor ever referring to the spiritual realm of God. By contrast, when speaking of “kingdoms” the Word of God often refers to the spiritual realm of Deity. Examples would be, “Kingdom of God,” Matthew 6:33; 12:28; 19:24; 21:31 & 43; Mark 1:14 & 15; 4:11; etcetera, etcetera. Which side will you choose?
60:12: “nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish” = Speaking either of Spiritual Israel (see my Bible Studies: “ISRAEL, THE RETURN OF.” And “ISRAEL’S REPLACEMENT THEOLOGY DOCTRINE.”), or, the condition of this prophecy (obedience) was never met.
60:14:“bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet” = Either after the Third Coming of Christ (most likely), or see my verse 12 Note.
60:16: “shalt suck the breast of kings” = The “Targum” states it this way. “in the spoil of kings ye shall delight yourselves.” However, again, conditional.
60:19: “The sun shall be no more thy light” = Obviously Heavenly language.
60:21: “Thy people also shall be all righteous” = Of course, ONLY the “righteous” will inherit Heaven.
CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE
61:1: “to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound” = Those who are “captives” and in “prison” and are “bound,” are those who are trapped in sin.
61:2: “To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” = Here is my Luke 4:19 Note: This refers to the Sabbatical year, i.e., the year after the seventh, that is, the seventh year, i.e., the Jubilee year; which is the fiftieth year after the seven Sabbaths of years, i.e., Pentecost. On the Sabbath for the land see Exodus 23:11; Leviticus 19:9-10; 25:6; Deuteronomy 24:19-22. On the remission of debts owed by fellow citizens see Deuteronomy 15:16.
On the release of slaves see Exodus 21:2-6 & Deuteronomy 15:12-18. On the restoration of land to its original owner see Leviticus 25:8-17 & 23-55; 27:16-25; Numbers 36:4. That this text that Christ read from the Book of Isaiah (61:2) refers to these Sabbatical institutions is clear by the context, which Jesus surely emphasized; that being the liberation of the “poor,” “brokenhearted,” “captives,” “blind [better -- prisoners],” and “bruised.”
“the day of vengeance” = This part is left out by Jesus because it was not the time for that at His First Coming.
61:8: “For I the LORD love judgment” = Being a righteous God, this only makes sense. In the end, He will make all things right.
CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO
62:4: “Hephzibah” = Meaning, “My delight is in thee.” It was the name of Hezekiah’s mother (2Ki. 21:1). Which fits with, “for the LORD delighteth in thee,” this verse.
“Beulah” = Meaning, “married,” as is seen further in this verse, “thy land shall be married.” The “land shall be married” to “righteousness,” verse 1.
62:7: “Jerusalem a praise in the earth” = Notice Jerusalem is not just planted (after the Third Coming of Christ) “on the earth,” but “in the earth.” It becomes a part of it.
62:8: “sworn by His right hand” =.If you’ve ever been to court, you may be familiar with the phrase, “Raise your right hand,” which is ware this phrase and procedure originated from. However, this is the only place where God “swears by using His right hand.” Otherwise, He swears by Himself.
CHAPTER SIXTY- THREE
63:1 & 2: “[1] Bozrah [2] winefat” = Bozrah means, “sheepfold.” From Isaiah 34:6, we learn that the garments are red with blood. But here, Bozrah’s garments are red because of stomping grapes in the “winefat.”
63:4: “For the day of vengeance” = This is the finishing of what was started in Isaiah 61:1-2 (see my notes there).
“the year of My redeemed is come” = The Second Coming.
63:8: “children that will not lie” = Children that will not prove false. Dedicated.
63:16: “from everlasting” = Has no beginning.
CHAPTER SIXTY-FOUR
64:6: “filthy rags” = The Hebrew is even more graphic: “used menstrual cloths.”
CHAPTER SIXTY-FIVE
65:1: “I AM sought of them that asked not” = Here God turns from His people that no longer sought after Him to a people who will seek after Him once they know Him.
65:4: “swine’s flesh. . . [is] abominable” = Here, and specifically in Isaiah 66:17, will be destroyed.
65:11: “That number” = The Hebrew is, “Meniof Manai. Mani,” which equals the moon divinity, as observed by the Arabians on the 24th of December. See “The Two Babylon’s,” by Alexander Hislop, page 94.
65:17: “I create new heavens and a new earth” = See Revelation 21:1.
65:18: “be ye glad and rejoice for ever” = “In the visions of the prophets, those who have triumphed over sin and the grave are seen happy in the presence of their Maker, talking freely with Him as man talked with God in the beginning.” RH, July 1, 1915.
“I create” = The Hebrew for “create” is “bara.” It literally means, “nothingness.” God needs no material with which to work with.
65:20: “There shall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed” = Before I explain this verse, let’s explore the obvious.
No one “dies” in Heaven (Rev. 21:4).
No one is “old” in Heaven (new resurrected bodies; 1Co. 15:50 & 52; 2Co. 5:1).
No Child is a child at one hundred years of age.
According to verse 19, “the voice of weeping shall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.” If there were death in Heaven this would not be true. Compare to Isaiah 25:8.
The context from verse 11 to here (verse 20), discusses what God’s “servants” shall have and what the “they that forsake the LORD,” verse 11, will get. And what the wicked will get is “the Lord GOD shall slay thee,” verse 15.
My translation: “There shall be no babies dying when only a few days old; nor men who have not lived over an hundred years; for children shall live past an hundred; but the sinner, even if reaching an hundred years old shall be accursed (and die).”
Tackling the phrase “but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed” first. According to verse 15, the ones that have “a curse” will be “slain” by God. Therefore, let’s move on.
The phrase, “an infant of days,” is literally, “an infant who lives only a few days.” All will have their thought processes beyond that of a youth. Though they died at infancy or childhood, their intellectual values will be brought up to speed. While those who reached the older stages of life, even though they may have not had great intellect as should come with that age, 100 years, counted as a “sinner,” “For all have sinned,” and, “accursed” as it where, will also be brought up to speed.
The “Septuagint,” the “Syriac,” and the “Vulgate,” read thus, “Nor shall there be there,” instead of “There shall be no more thence.” The change requires the omission of a single letter in the present Hebrew text, and the sense seems to demand it. The design of the prophet here is to describe the times of happiness and prosperity which would succeed the calamities under which the nation had been suffering. This he does by a great variety of images, all denoting substantially the same thing: bliss and prosperity.
Let’s look at the “Septuagint’s” rendering of it: “Nor shall there be there anymore an untimely death (Hebrew “aoros”) and an old man who has not filled up his time.” The idea is not that there should be no infant in those future times -- which would be an idea so absurd that a prophet would not use it even in poetic fiction -- but that there will not be an infant who shall not fill up his days, or better, that would be short-lived. All shall live long, and all shall be blessed with health, and continual vigor and youth.
Continuing on with this Jewish type of reasoning and understanding, Isaiah than states: “but the sinner being an hundred years old shall be accursed.” The real meaning is that even though one should live with others in this happy state, if they continue in their transgressions, they will die in their sins, though they made it to the age of one-hundred. The poetical Jewish thought in relation to a real new Heaven and new earth, is that, being “accursed” they will not even be there; they will be dead.
Therefore, the true meaning of this verse is that there would be no weakness of youth, nor infirmities of age, but all would be fresh and flourishing. As to the child dying, none shall die without attaining a full old age (die to their childhood and become an adult), and none shall become old in age (as far as body is concerned). What we are dealing with, in this two-fold meaning passage, is the ultimate destruction of the power of death, and or, here it is merely to the limitation of its power.
65:22: “as the days of a tree” = Staying in the context of “They shall not build, and another inhabit,” from “John Gill’s Bible Commentary,” we read: So “the Lord’s people should live as long as the trees planted by them, and so should eat the fruit thereof, and not leave them to others to partake of. The Targum, Septuagint, and Arabic versions, render it.”
According to Jeremiah 17:7-8, “[7] the man that trusteth in the LORD. . . [8] neither shall cease from yielding fruit.” In other words, in Heaven, you and the tree shall never die. Compare with Job 14:7-9.
65:23: “their offspring with them” = Those they have converted to share the bliss of Heaven.
65:25: “dust shall be the serpent’s meat” = How is it that “dust shall be the serpent’s meat?” To “lick the dust” is figurative of the utter and perpetual degradation of Satan and his emissaries. Satan fell self-tempted, falling by his own temptation; therefore, no atonement was contrived for him as there was for man. To leave the serpent in his crawling state will forever symbolize this, and remind us of the price of sin. God wanted to raise manhood into union with Himself. This has always been His goal. God’s declaration that human nature was to be raised into union with the Godhead has always brought forth from Satan hatred for both The Son of God and for mankind. But to raise Satan back to his former state could not be achieved once he passed his point of probation, just as man can do now.
CHAPTER SIXTY-SIX
66:1; Acts 7:48-50: “Heaven is My throne” = “The place of God’s highest worship is in Heaven.” RH, February 23, 1911.
66:10: “As the prophet beholds the redeemed dwelling in the city of God, free from sin and from all marks of the curse, in rapture he exclaims: [verse quoted along with Isa. 60:18-21].” RH, July 1, 1915; PK:729; AG:369.
66:17: “eating swine’s flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together” = Notice that those found eating swine and mice at the Second Coming of Christ will be slain. Leviticus 11:7 has stood as the bulwark for the Bibles stance against the use of “swine” as food. For those who believe that God does change His mind about what He Commands, I can’t help you. For those who are new to God’s ordained Biblical Diet, see my Bible Study: “DIET, DINNING GOD’S WAY.”
Some think by the “abomination” is meant the “weasel,” since it would be included in the Leviticus 11:7 passage; although it may be better applied to things offered to idols, or blood, which are here designed or designated. Mice have been eaten, at least some sort of them, such as the dormouse, by some people, particularly the Romans who counted it as delicious food.
66:21: “take of them for priests and for Levities” = According to this verse (see verse 20 for who the “them” is) our Lord changes the priestly duties, which were only given to the line of Aaron and the Levities. Gentiles could not literally become descendants of Aaron or Levi, but God would authorize some to serve in these capacities, which had previously been forbidden even to most Jews. Therefore, the distinction between Jews and Gentiles will become functionally irrelevant (Gal. 3:28-29).
66:22: “new heavens and the new earth” = See Revelation 22:1.
66:23: “from one Sabbath to another” = God’s Holy Sabbath is to be observed FOREVER in Heaven. That this is the Seventh-Day Sabbath is clear from comparing this verse with Ezekiel 46:1 & 3.
“And when Eden shall bloom on earth again, God’s holy rest day will be honored by all beneath the sun.” RH, August 18, 1910; DA:283; FLB:37; Mar:371; ML:364; SD:59.
66:24: “neither shall their fire be quenched” = See my Bible Study: “DEATH, THE BIBLICAL TRUTH ABOUT.”
