INTRODUCTION TO

THE BOOK OF PHILEMON

WHO WROTE:  Paul.

WHAT TIME PERIOD IS COVERED:  57 A.D. or 58 A.D.

WHEN WRITTEN:  This Epistle was written from Rome at the same time as the Epistles to the Colossians and Ephesians (about 57 or 58 A.D.), and was delivered to Philemon by Onesimus, who had deserted his master Philemon, in whose “house,” verse 2 (see also verse 22), the Church of God met.

INTRODUCTION:  Any Book written by Paul must be classified with this important statement from Peter, that all the writings of Paul are “hard to be understood,” Second Peter 3:16.

This brief letter is considered by most Bible commentators to have been written by Paul during his Roman imprisonment as described in Acts 28:30-31.
