introduction to the

book of SECOND peter

WHO WROTE:  Peter, the Apostle.

WHAT TIME PERIOD IS COVERED:  If we go with the traditional date of Peters crucifixion, in 64 A.D., this Epistle would have to have been written before that time.

WHEN WRITTEN:  The Epistle of Jude was written sometime after 68 A.D. or 69 A.D. according to “Fausset’s Bible Dictionary.”  Or between 63 and 67 A.D., focusing upon 65 A.D., according to “Smith’s Bible Commentary.”  However, Dr. Philip Schaff [be cautious of anything from Schaff] and “The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia,” they date it as late as 75-80 A.D.  Whereas, “The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia,” has the First Epistle of Peter being written in 64 A.D. along with the Second.

INTRODUCTION:  This Second Epistle claims to have been written by Peter Himself (2Pe. 1:1; 3:1 & 2).  Peters object in writing this Epistles was to “stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance,” Second Peter 3:1. “Remembrance” of what?  Of “the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the Commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour.”  Second Peter 3:2.

The genuineness of this Second Epistle was at first questioned, in that it found no place in the catalogues of the New Testament Scriptures of the 2nd and 3rd Centuries.  The first Church employing it was at Alexandria, Egypt.  But subsequently the Church at large became satisfied from internal evidence of its genuineness and inspiration, and when the Canon was pronounced complete in the 4th Century, It was without hesitancy received.  To reject this Book is to also reject the entire Book of Jude, which is basically so similar to Chapter Two of this Epistle, that you would believe them to be written by the same author (Divine comes to my mind).
