CHAPTER ONE

 

 

1:5-9:  “elder” & “bishop” = Paul here gives the requirements and duties of an “elder,” in verses 5-6, and a “bishop,” verses 7-9.

 

1:12:  “slow bellies” = One who is “slothful” and “lazy.”

 

 

CHAPTER TWO

 

 

2:2:  “grave” = The Greek is, “semnos,” meaning, “venerable,” that is, “honorable, honest.”

 

2:3”. “given” = The Greek is, “G1402; douloo,” literally translated as “to make a slave of; to enslave; to reduce to bondage.”  See Acts 7:6; First Corinthians 7:15; Galatians 4:3; Second Peter 2:19.

2:6:  “sober” = Most think of “sober” as meaning, “not drunk.”  But the meaning here is, “be serious,” “sober minded.”

 

2:7:  “gravity” = The Greek is, “semnotes,” meaning, “venerableness,” that is, “honesty.”

 

2:10:  “purloining” = The Greek is, “nosphizomai.”  The fundamental idea of the word being, “to put far away fromanother; to set apart for one’s self.”  Hence, to purloin and appropriate to ones own use.  A better way to think of it would be to “embezzle” one’s neighbor.  Not to appropriate to themselves what belongs to their masters.  The word “purloin” means, literally, “to take or carry away for oneself.”  Here it means that the servant was not to apply to his own use what belonged to his master.

 

2:13:  “Looking” = Notice that ONLY those who are “Looking” for the Second Coming of our Lord will be saved.

 

 

CHAPTER THREE

 

 

3:2:  “To speak evil of no man” = In my opinion, of all of Paul’s instructions, this may be the hardest.

 

3:10:  “after the first and second admonition” = That is, “reject” him only after he has been publicly admonished twice.  It is the same principle as set up by our Lord in the Matthew, Chapter 18’s, instructions of dealing with a brother of Christ.
