EGW ON DINOSAURS

A) INTRODUCTION

The word “dinosaur” is not found in the classic “King James Version” of 1611 A.D.  This is to be expected since the term “dinosaur” was not invented until two hundred years after the “King James Version” was translated.

It is thought that “Behemoth” in the Book of Job is/was a Dinosaur, possibly a “Brachiosaurs.”  See Job 40:15-18.  Also “Leviathan,” Job 41:1 (see also Psa. 74:14; 104:26; Isa. 27:1).

B) TO THE BIBLE

Many Bible Scholars believe that in the Book of Job, the words “behemoth,” Job 40:15, and “leviathan,” Job 41:1(see also Psa. 74:14; 104:26; Isa. 27:1), refer to creatures known as “dinosaurs” today.  “Behemoth” was possibly a “Brachiosaurs.”  Whereas “Leviathan” is incredible.  Take the time to read Isaiah, Chapter 41, and you will find that there is nothing like it on our earth today.  Whatever “Leviathan” was we will never know (some think and believe it was and is a dragon; and I will not argue with them, as we simply don’t know nor have any geological bones to prove anything like it).

Although “dragons” are steeped in mythology (see the “Wikipedia” article on them), they are somewhat similar to the Biblical account and makes for interesting discussions.  How they came to be extinct would be the real discussion for the Biblically minded person.  Job was either describing an animal he heard about from descendants of Noah and their pre-flood descriptions (see my Bible Study:  “CHRONOLOGICAL CHART” to understand that Shem was still alive well after Abraham was born), or he had seen this creature.

In Genesis 6:4 we have the Hebrew word, “nephiyl,” which is translated as “giants.”  Some Bible commentators have run away with this word by calling and claiming that these “giants,” were a race of men called the “Nephilim,” and teaching that they came from angels mating with human women.  The Biblical fact that angels do not procreate (see Mat. 22:30; Mark 12:25; Luke 20:34-36) should put an end to that discussion right away.  And if you still have questions about that, see my Bible Study:  “SONS OF GOD, THE TRUE.”

However, these “giants” are not just referring to mankind.  It is referring to the animal kingdom also.  And I believe that these were destroyed in the global flood.  For those who argue that Goliath came from this race, fine; for the genes of taller mankind were still in the Blood of Noah, and Noah was probably about 9 feet tall himself.  It was not until after the allowing of the eating of meat in mankind’s diet that men began to have a shortened lifespan, and therefore (I conclude) a smaller stature.

C) EGW

Here is what I have come to conclude on the entire matter of dinosaurs, based upon my favorite Bible Commentator:

“I was shown that very large, powerful animals existed before the flood which do not now exist.”  1SP:87; 3SG:92.

“God so ordered that men, beasts, and trees, many times larger than those now upon the earth, and other things, should be buried in the earth at the time of the flood, and there be preserved to evidence to man that the inhabitants of the old world perished by a flood.”  1SP:90; 3SG:95; LHU:59.

“But if there was one sin above another which called for the destruction of the race by the flood, it was the base crime of amalgamation of man and beast which defaced the image of God, and caused confusion everywhere.”  1SP:69; 3SG:64.

“Every species of animals which God had created was preserved in the ark.  The confused species which God did not create, which were the result of amalgamation, were destroyed by the flood.  Since the flood, there has been amalgamation of man and beast, as may be seen in the almost endless varieties of species of animals, and in certain races of men.”  1SP:78; 3SG:75.

D) HISTORIC SIGHTINGS

These mention them as “Dragons.”

Herodotus, known as the “Father of History,” in the 5th century B.C., spoke of them.

Alexander the Great, in B.C. 326, reported, that when he conquered parts of what is now India, “his soldiers were scared by the great dragons that lived in caves.”

Pliny the Elder (23-79 A.D.), Roman historian and author of “Naturalis Historia,” mentions them in his work, “Pliny’s Natural History.”

Cassius Dio, a Roman Historian, in 150-235 A.D., who published 80 volumes, mentions them.

Marco Polo, in 1271 A.D., in his work, “The Travels of Marco Polo,” mentions them.

Athanasius Kircher (1601-1680), a German Jesuit Scholar, who published 40 major works and taught at Roman College for over 40 years, mentions them.

An “Alter Cloth” depicting Saint George slaying a Nothosaurus dragon, is displayed in the At Palau De La Generalitat, in Barcelona, Spain, which is an original

for the 15 hundreds.  Note.  This is depicted 400 years before the first dinosaur bones were excavated.

Pictographs all over the globe, in particular one in the Grand Canyon in Arizona, of an Edmontosaurus, are found.  In Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada, on the Agawa Rock Art from Misshepezhieu and Three Rivers State Park near Alamogordo, New Mexico, depict a Stegosaurus.  In the Amazon rainforest is depicted a Brachiosaurs surrounded by nine men with spears or swords.

The ancients also illustrated dinosaurs on their pottery, carvings, statues, and paintings.  These were all produced before any dinosaur bones were dug up.  How would they know what these creatures looked like unless they physically saw them?  Plus the many legends.
