The Great Controversy Changes Explained
(Might Be Better Seen On My Excel Spreadsheet [Via E-Mail] Along With This Explanation
A) CHANGES WERE REALLY MADE TO THE PROPHETS WRITINGS.
B) WHO WAS/IS DOING THE CHANGES.
C) TO THE CHANGES.
D) THE TIME OF TROUBLE CHAPTER IS ENTIRELY TURNED AROUND.
A) CHANGES WERE REALLY MADE TO THE PROPHETS WRITINGS
First, we must establish that there was the possibility that changes were made. Please see my study called “Ellen Gould White, The Prophet.” Consider also the following statements. Keep in mind that it took Mrs. White 15 years to write, The Spirit of Prophecy, Book 4 (the original Great Controversy). Yet, now she is supposed to write this new book, The Great Controversy, in less than four years; nearly 3 of which (1885-1887) she spent traveling around in Europe. I understand that she was only supposed to edit the original, but if that is the case, why does SP4 have only 492 pages, while the GC has 678? That is a lot of editing!
Second, There Is The Excuse: “Sales had been so good that the printing plates were already showing signs of wear. It was decided to reset the book in larger type.” Ellen G. White in Europe (EGWE), 1885-1887, by D.A. Delafield, p. 257. Fine, but did they leave it alone?
Notice This Date: “Patriarchs and Prophets was in the development stage while Ellen White and her staff were in Basel [Switzerland], but it was laid aside in April, 1887, to give priority to The Great Controversy.” 3BIO:443. Are you watching the dates?
Then This Date: “Work Begins on the Enlargement of The Great Controversy, -- Basel, Switzerland, June 11, 1886. I think you will want to hear some particulars in regard to our family. . . Marian’s [Davis] health is about as it usually is. She is at work on volume 4, ‘Great Controversy,’ -- Manuscript 20, 1886.” 3SM:111.
Then We Are Told Of Another Book She Was Working On, While At The Same Time She Was To Be Working On The Great Controversy: “Having both her trusted helper, Marian Davis, who had come to Switzerland in February, 1886, and he daughter-in-law, Mary White, to assist her, Ellen White looked forward to real progress in book preparation. Before she could turn to the enlarging of the great controversy story, she must do her part in furnishing her sermons and the account of her travels in connection with the European trip for the forthcoming book Historical Sketches of SDA Foreign Missions… By early November, Historical Sketches was completed. It was an attractive, 294-page, illustrated, two-column volume in English and would sell in America for 90 cents. But Marian was a little discouraged. She had come over in February to work on the Spirit of Prophecy volumes, she had been in Europe nearly a year, and Ellen White had up to that time almost no time to write for the new, enlarged books.” EGWE:256.
Yet The Work On The Great Controversy Was Well Along: “The work on the book was well along when Ellen White and her staff returned to the United States in the late summer of 1887. The completion of the work was the first task to which she [rather they] gave attention as she and her helpers settled in her Healdsburg home. Her last writing for the book was for the author’s introduction, carrying the date of May, 1888.” 3BIO:441.
21MR:323 Supports The Above Statement: “We [Who is the real “We”] are pressing with all our might the Volume 4 to its completion. The printers are driving us fast, and I believe we shall have hard work to keep up with them.” Written February 13, 1888, from Healdsburg, California, to S. N. Haskell and Elder and Mrs. Ings.
Which Statement Are We To Believe: “Having both her trusted helpers, Marian Davis, who had come to Switzerland in February, 1886, and her daughter-in-law, Mary White, to assist her, Ellen White looked forward to real progress in book preparation. Before she could turn to the enlarging of the great controversy story, she must do her part in furnishing her sermons and the account of her travels in connection with the European trip for the forthcoming book Historical Sketches of SDA Foreign Missions.” EGWE:256.
Check This One Out: “By early November, Historical Sketches was completed. It was an attractive, 294-page, illustrated, two-column volume in English and would sell in America for 90 cents. But Marian was a little discouraged. She had come over in February to work on the Spirit of Prophecy volumes, she had been in Europe nearly a year, and Ellen White had up to that time almost no time [“no time”] to write for the new, enlarged [the first true statement] books.” EGWE:256.
Again, Which Statement Are We To Believe: “The work on the book was well along when Ellen White and her staff returned to the United States in the late summer of 1887. The completion of the work was the first task to which she gave attention as she and her helpers settled in her Healdsburg home. Her last writing for the book was for the author’s introduction, carrying the date of May, 1888.” 3BIO:441.
Support For The Above Statement: “We are pressing with all our might the Volume 4 to its completion. The printers are driving us fast, and I believe we shall have hard work to keep up with them. I have next the Volume 1 to get out, then to revise Volumes 2 and 3.” 21MR:323. Written February 13, 1888.
Then We Have This Contradicting Statement: “I am not inclined to go to California Conference unless I decide to spend the winter there, and Marian means to be with me wherever I am that we can work together. You know that I have not done any of my book writing to speak of since I came from Europe [Did you catch that? Since she came from Europe!] because of this terrible burden upon my soul of seeing men who are connected with our institutions so blinded by the enemy they cannot distinguish the voice of the True Shepherd from that of a stranger.” 1888M:691. Letter to W.C. White, written August 19, 1890.
If this statement is true, and this author believes that it is, SINCE SHE REALLY WROTE THIS ONE, that means from August 1887 to August 1890, when she wrote this letter, she had not been working on the preparation of, or the writing of books. Yet the changed 1888 Edition of The Great Controversy, copyrighted in 1888, and Patriarchs and Prophets, published in 1890, were supposed to have been written by her.
B) WHO WAS/IS DOING THE CHANGES
Who Was Really Writing The 1888 Edition We Shall Never Truly Know. However, We Have These Statements: “C.H. Jones, the manager of Pacific Press, in California, had written that there was a need for a new edition of volume 4, The Great Controversy.” EGWE:257; Ellen G. White in Europe, 1885-1887, by D.A. Delafield, p. 257. “W.C. White talked the situation over with his mother and wrote to C.H. Jones that they [we have at least two up to this point, i.e., “they”] would give the book a careful examination, smooth out some [“some” REALLY; it turned out to be “a lot”] expressions that were not as clear as they might be, and add [DID YOU CATCH THAT, “add” proof that they added] some more references at the foot of the pages [LIARS, that added more than just “references”]. By mid-April, 1887, Ellen White had laid aside her work on volume 1 and had turned to volume 4 [now she is supposed to finish this book in 1 year; something she has NEVER done nor will do again], and was working diligently to get the latter book ready.” EGWE:257.
“We shall receive the most fierce opposition from the Adventists [FROM WHO] who oppose the Law of God. But, like the builders of the walls of Jerusalem, we should not be diverted and hindered from our work by reports, by messengers desiring discussion or controversy, or by intimidating threats, the publication of falsehoods [OR CHANGED WRITINGS; NEW “publication{s}”], or any of the devices that Satan may instigate.” 3T:574.2.
Again, “Patriarchs and Prophets was in the development stage while Ellen With and her staff were in Basel, but it was laid aside in April 1887, to give priority to The Great Controversy.” 3BIO:443. “In the meantime, J. H. Waggoner, who was to work in Europe for a time, arrived in Basel. He joined Marian, working with her on the chapters for volume 4 and also on the chapters for volume 1 that had been laid aside.” 3BIO:440. And here may be the rest of our list of writers: “The enlarged edition, which came to be known as the 1888 edition, carried twenty-six full-page illustrations and at the close devoted thirteen pages to general notes and thirteen pages to biographical notes. These notes were prepared by several authors, including J.H. Waggoner, Uriah Smith, and M. C. Wilcox. Marian Davis assisted.” 3BIO:442.
So we are supposed to be so stupid that our math adds up, i.e. SP4 has only 492 pages, while the GC has 678. So if we add “ twenty-six full-page illustrations,” and “thirteen pages to general notes and thirteen pages to biographical notes,” that equals 52 pages added to the original 492 pages, which equals “678” [actually 544; I can add since they believe you cannot] to our NEW Great Controversy!
And A Disturbing Statement For All This: “Sister Davis has solicited a conversation with me and with deep feelings confessed that she had not had a correct appreciation of the work which she was handling. She felt that she had not had the sympathy for, and felt the sacredness of the work as she should have done. Now she saw it in altogether a different light, and she was determined to make thorough work, for her soul’s sake and for Christ’s sake, that the work should never be marred in her hands.” 1888M:869. [A little to late].
C) TO THE CHANGES
The best way to know if the book has been changed is to look at the changes. Let’s compare:
Comparing THE GREAT CONTROVERSY - with - THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY BOOK FOUR:
In the first chapter of the new GC she is a Historian not a Prophet as with SP4: “looked (looks) -- was (is) -- rose (rise) -- seemed (seems) -- then (now) -- were (are) -- lighted (light) -- gleamed (gleam) -- stood (stands) -- occupied (occupy) -- waved (wave) -- awoke (awake) -- declared (declare) -- was (is) -- had (has)” -- et cetera.
PAGE 37 / 38: “so He has warned the world” / “so He has warned His people.” Apparently we Adventists don’t know the difference between, “the world,” and or, “His people.”
Page NONE / 215-221: ENTIRELY LEFT OUT OF 1888 and 1911 GC / The opposition to William Miller. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? It means that even more “uninspired” pages were added.
PAGE 334-335 / NONE: “The event exactly fulfilled the prediction.” These are the words of Josiah Litch, and not that of EGW, as found in Signs of the Times and Expositor of Prophecy, Aug. 1, 1840 (see the Appendix). / Ellen G. White NEVER discussed the Ottoman Empire. HERE IS A SECTION OF ADDED PAGES!
PAGE 383 / 232: “cannot refer to the Roman Church alone.” Note: Adding “alone” makes it plural, whereas the original was singular. / “It cannot be the Romish church which is here meant.” Must I explain the implications here?
PAGES 328, 329, 368, 391 / 206, 223, 241, 247: “1844” or “spring of 1844” / “1843.” Now we’re changing our own history.
PAGE 445 / 278: LEFT OUT!!! [LEAVING ROOM FOR MORE ADDED MATERIAL] / “The image is made to the first or leopard-like beast, which is the one brought to view in the third angel’s message. By this first beast is represented the Roman Church, an ecclesiastical body clothed with civil power, having authority to punish all dissenters. The image to the beast represents another religious body clothed with similar powers. The formation of this image is the work of that beast whose peaceful rise and mild professions render it so striking a symbol of the United States. Here is to be found an image of the Papacy.” 4SP:278; SR:381. But in SR:381, the first sentence is left out! Now try to understand “By this first beast,” without the statement above. What “first beast?” DID A CATHOLIC do some editing here?
PAGE 445 / 278: “The ‘mark of the beast’ still remains to be defined.” Also in GC88:445. Defined on page 448. / NOT MENTIONED, in the original!!! BECAUSE she did “define” it clearly, until the fake 1888/1911 GC came out.
PAGE 457 / 291: “1843” & “1844.” Here they forgot to change this because 1843 is a direct reference to the original Spirit of Prophecy, Book 4 / “1843” & “1844.” That “1843” is the correct date can be proven by reading statements from William Miller: “I was thus brought, in 1818. . . to the solemn conclusion that in about twenty-five years from that time, all affairs of our present state would be wound up [OH WAIT; I forgot that they believe that you cannot add].” The Midnight Cry by Francise D. Nichol, pp. 34-35, and 1T:73: “The great test on time was in 1843 and 1844.”
PAGE NONE / 338-340: LEFT OUT -- Not important for end times. / Dialogue of Satan -- Chapter, The Snares of Satan. We would not want to know “The Snares of Satan” now would we?
PAGE 588 / 405: “they will reach over” -- Again making something plural when she was specific. / “she will reach over.”
PAGE 627 / 431, 446: God’s plagues fall when Jesus leaves the Sanctuary. / Jesus leaves the Sanctuary then begins the Time of Trouble (Note: 446 = God’s plagues). IF ANYONE [me; I’ve done it for you in another study] would take the time to put “Last Day Events In Their Order,” taking SP4 and comparing it to the new GC, anyone can see that the NEW one is messed up.
PAGE 615 / 432: Death Decree issued before the Time of Trouble. / Jesus leaves the Sanctuary then the Time of Trouble is imminent.
PAGE 614 / 441: “Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble.” This statement is not in the original Spirit of Prophecy, Book 4. / Satan cannot yet plunge the inhabitants of earth into the final trouble for: “The same destructive power exercised by holy angles when God commands, will be [future tense] exercised by evil angels when He allows.” This is the statement that is in the Original Spirit of Prophecy, Book 4, and helps us to understand correctly.
PAGE 615 / 442: Death decree issued before Satan personates Christ, which happens on page 624. / Death decree issued after Satan (NOTICE) “attempts” to personate Christ, pages 442-444-5.
