A) INTRODUCTION
Regarding the title, we might also state: “Why Do Good Things Happen To Bad People.” But better: “Why Do Good Things Happen At All To Good Or Bad People?” For “There is none good but . . . God,” Matthew 19:17; Mark 10:18. Or, “Why Do Bad Things Happen To Bad People?”
B) EXPLANATION
One of the best Bible Chapters to show that while bad things do happen to good people, it is usually caused most often by the bad influences around them, and not because of the good people themselves (note also how our Lord regards them; think of the prophet Daniel); and that Chapter is in Jeremiah, Chapter 24. It's short; so give it a read. The main point brings out why in verses 5 & 6, “(5) I have sent out of this place into the land of the Chaldeans for their good. (6) For I will set mine eyes upon them for good.”
The Apostle Paul certainly knew sufferings (Second Corinthians 4:7-11, 16-18; 11:23-28; Hebrews 11:32-40). However, he regarded them as opportunities. There are many reasons why Christian’s face trials. The following are just a few, keeping in mind that God uses all disciplines for both the good and evil for their ultimate benefit.
To glorify God (Daniel 3:16-18, 24-25).
Discipline for known sin (Hebrews 12:5-11; James 4:17; Romans 14:23; First John 1:9).
To prevent us from falling into sin (First Peter 4:1-2).
To keep us from pride. Paul was kept from pride by his “thorn in the flesh” (Second Corinthians 12:7-10).
To build faith (First Peter 1:6-7).
To cause growth (Romans 5:3-5).
To teach obedience and discipline (Acts 9:15-16; Philippians 4:11-13).
To equip us to comfort others (Second Corinthians 1:3-4).
To prove the reality of Christ in us (Second Corinthians 4:7-11).
For a testimony to the angels (Job 1:8; Ephesians 3:8-11; First Peter 1:12).
When faced with times of trouble remember that God loves you, He knows what is best for you, and He has a plan for your life (Jeremiah 29:11).
