METHUSELAH

(THE OLDEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED; AND THE GRANDFATHER OF NOAH)

A) INTRODUCTION.

B) ADAM TO NOAH.

A) INTRODUCTION

As you most likely already know, Methuselah was a descendant in the line of Seth.  Methuselah was the son of Enochand the grandfather of Noah.  Methuselah lived 969 years (Gen. 5:27), meaning he is therefore the oldest of the patriarchs and the oldest man in the Bible, or that we know of; i.e., he is the oldest man of whom we have any record.

What you may not know, is that his name was given to him by his father Enoch, as a prophecy.  In other words, his name was prophetic, meaning, “he dies and it [the flood] is sent.”  “Phoenician Inscriptions” use as his name, “methu,” or “betha,” meaning, “a man.”  Moreover, as prophecy would have it, he died in the very year of the flood.  See my Bible Study:  “CHRONOLOGICAL LAYOUT (ADAM TO 2000 A.D.).”  A literal translation of his name is, “man of the dart,” or better, “man of the dearth,” or “man of the flood.”

B) ADAM TO NOAH

Now if you are a studier of the meaning of names in the Bible, or have an interest in the meaning of people’s names, you may find this of most important interest in your quest to find out more about Methuselah.  The Jews understood the importance of names, and therefore so should we.

Note the antediluvian genealogy, from Adam to Noah.  Here are their names and their meanings:

Genesis 2:23:  “And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh:  she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”  Adam = Man.

Genesis 4:25:  “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth:  For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”  Seth = Appointed.

First Chronicles 1:1:  “Adam, Sheth, Enosh.”  Enosh is another form of Enos, with Enosh meaning, “Mortal.”  Enos = Mortal Man.

First Chronicles 1:2:  “Kenan.”  Kenan is another form of Cainan and both are derived from “Canah,” meaning, “to possess.”  Cainan = Possessor.

First Chronicles 1:2:  “Mahalaleel.”  Mahalaleel is a compound word coming from “Hillel,” meaning, “to praise El [God].”  Mahalaleel = Praise God.

First Chronicles 1:2:  “Jered.”  Both Jered and Jared are from the Hebrew, “yeredh” and “yaredh,” meaning, “he comes down,” or, “he descends.”  Jared = He Comes Down.

Jude 1:14:  “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied [or taught] of these, saying, Behold, the Lord Cometh with ten thousands of His saints.”  Enoch comes from Henoch, which means, “consecrated, disciplined, dedicated.”  Enoch = Consecrating.

Genesis 5:21:  “Methuselah.”  Methuselah broken down is, “Methu,” meaning, “a man,” while “Selah,” means, “rest.”  But with “Methu” in front of “Selah,” the meaning of “Selah,” is more like a permanent “rest,” i.e., “Death.”  Methuselah = A Man’s Death.

Genesis 4:23:  “And Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech:  for I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.”  Lamech = Hurting.

Genesis 5:29:  “And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us.”  Noah = Comfort.

Putting it altogether we read:  Man is Appointed Mortality a Possessor of it; but Praise God, He Comes Down, Consecrating [or Prophesying] that A Man’s Death brings the Hurting Comfort.
