A) MY SOURCES

Sources other than God’s Word that I have used are Josephus, in his “Antiquities and Jewish War,” and Strabo and Dio Cassins.

B) HEROD THE GREAT

“Herod The Great” was the Herod that was visited by the “wise men” from the East (Matthew, Chapter 2; Luke, Chapter 1).  He is the one who killed all the male children in Bethlehem from two years old and younger (Matthew 2:16).  He had four sons (listed below).  He Reigned from B.C. 37 to B.C. 4.  Most Historians believe he died in B.C. 4, by the hand of God or coincidence, you decide.  I have him charted out as dying in B.C. 2, the same year our Lord was born.

C) HEROD THE GREAT’S, SONS

The sons of Herod The Great, of which there are four, are:

HEROD ANTIPAS/ANTIPATER;

ARISTOBULUS IV;

PHILIP;

HEROD ARCHELAUS.

D) HEROD ANTIPAS/ANTIPATER

One of the four sons of Herod the Great, Antipas’ original (first) wife (Malthace or some say Phasaelis) was the daughter of Aretas, King of Arabia.  After divorcing Phasaelis, he was married to Herodias (whom was his brother Philips wife; Matthew 14:3).  This is the Herod, whom “the daughter of Herodias” (See Aristobulus), danced for at his “birthday,” Matthew 14:6, which in turn ended up with the beheading of John The Baptist (Matthew 14:8-11).  This is also the Herod whom Pilot sent Jesus to (Luke 23:7).  He was appointed by Roman leadership to be the Governor (Tetrarch) of Galilee and Peraea (Luke 3:1).  He ruled from 4 [or my 2] B.C. to 39 A.D.  He bore the title of Tetrarch, which equals, “Ruler of a Quarter,” and is referred to as both “Herod the Tetrarch,” Matthew 14:1, and “King Herod,” Mark 6:14-29.

E) ARISTOBULUS IV

One of the four sons of Herod the Great.  His mother was Mariamne I, who was one of the last women of the Hasmonean dynasty.  He was married to his cousin Berenice, the daughter of Costobarus and Salome I.  In Matthew 14:6, we are not given the name of the “daughter of Herodias,” but we learn from Josephus, in his work, “Antiquities,” XVIII, v, 4, that her name was Salome, whom was also the daughter of Aristobulus, meaning that Salome would be Herod Antipas’ niece.  Salome is the one whom danced for the head of John The Baptist (Matthew 14-8-11; Mark 6:17-28).  Not much else is known (Biblically) of Aristobulus.

F) PHILIP

One of the four sons of Herod the Great, he was the original husband of Herodias (Matthew 14:3; Luke 3:19).  He was appointed Tetrarch of Trachonitis; Gaulonitis; and Paneas.  He is the Philip of whom was mentioned as having had his wife stolen from him by is brother Herod Antipas (Mark 6:17-18).

G) HEROD ARCHELAUS

One of the four sons of Herod the Great, he ruled along with his brother Herod Antipas (Matthew 2:22) in a different region.  He was appointed by Roman authorities to be the Governor “King” of Judea; Samaria; and Idumaea.  Not much else is known (Biblically) of him.

H) HEROD THE GREAT’S, GRANDSON & GRANDDAUGHTER

I) HEROD AGRIPPA I

Herod Agrippa I, was the grandson of Herod The Great and the son of Aristobulus IV.  This is the Herod that beheaded James, imprisoned Peter, and was eaten by worms (Acts, Chapter 12).

J) SALOME

See D & E above.  Salome bequeathed her inheritance to Jamnia; Ashdod; and Phasaelus.

K) HEROD THE GREAT’S, GREAT GRANDSON

L) HEROD AGRIPPA II

Herod Agrippa II, is the great grandson of Herod the Great and the son of Herod Agrippa I.  This is the Herod that interviewed Paul (Acts, Chapter 26).
