PASSION WEEK BREAKDOWN

A) INTRODUCTION.

B) BREAKDOWN.

A) INTRODUCTION

Of the four Gospel writers, Matthew devotes 7 Chapters out of his 28 to these last 7 days of our Lord’s life; while Mark devotes 6 of his 16 Chapters; Luke devotes 6 of his 24 Chapters; and John devotes 10 out of his 21 Chapters.  However, John only depicts Nisan 10 & 14-16; with Chapters 13-19 devoted to Nisan 14.  The implications are clear:  As important as the life and teachings of Jesus were, His death and resurrection were even MORE IMPORTANT.  To sum it up:  Matthew devotes 1/4th of his Gospel to it; Mark devotes better than 1/3rd of his; Luke devotes 1/4th of his; and John devotes basically 1/2 of his.

B) BREAKDOWN

SUNDAY (Nisan 9):  According to Exodus 12:3, the Passover Lamb was to be selected on the 10th day of the month.  This correlates with Christ’s entry into Jerusalem which happened on Nisan 10.  If, as I have shown in my Bible Study:  “THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS,” Christ was Crucified on the 14th of Nisan, a Friday, then let’s work from there.  Friday the 14th, Thursday the 13th, Wednesday the 12th, Tuesday the 11th, and Monday the 10th.  Jesus was anointed at Bethany by Mary of Bethany on Nisan 10 (according to John 12:1; see my Bible Study:  “MARY MAGDALENE”).  Thus, there is no importance to SUNDAY.

“On the first day of the week, Jesus resumed His journey to Jerusalem to join in the feast of the Passover.”  2SP:383.  In other words, Jesus was still traveling on this day, SUNDAY.

MONDAY (Nisan 10): (Matthew 21:1-17; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-48; John 12:12-50) The triumphal entry (see my Exodus 12:3 Note above); Jesus cleanses the Temple; Jesus weeps over Jerusalem; His return to Bethany; Anointing of His feet by Mary of Bethany (Note:  Not Mary of Magdala).

TUESDAY (Nisan 11): (Matthew 21:18-22:14; Mark 11:12-26; Luke 20:1-8) The fruitless fig tree cursed; Second cleansing of the Temple; Jesus heals the afflicted there; Authority of Jesus challenged; He returns to Bethany in the evening.

WEDNESDAY (Nisan 12): (Matthew 22:15-25:46; Mark 11:27-13:37; Luke 20:9-21:36) Last day in the Temple; Greek believers meet with Jesus in outer court; Jesus’ last day of public teaching; Woes against religious elite; Teaching on the widow’s offering and destruction of the Temple; Lesson of the fig tree; Retirement to the Mount of Olives and discourse there on the Second Coming.

THURSDAY (Nisan 13): (Matthew 26:2-16; Mark 14:1-11; Luke 21:37-22:6) Judas plots betrayal bargain with priests this night.

FRIDAY (Nisan 14): (Matthew 26:17-27:56; Mark 14:12-15:41; Luke 22:7-23:49; John 13:1-19:37) The Preparation for the Passover; Institution of the Lord’s Supper [THIS IS FRIDAY NIGHT; according to Exodus 12:8 the Passover meal was to be eaten that night (Friday night).  Here is where Westerners become confused, because they are still thinking in non-Biblical terms, that this is Thursday night]; Jesus foretells Peter’s Denial; Judas’s betrayal; Jesus’ farewell discourse for the disciples and high-priestly prayer; Gethsemane; His arrest.  The events following the Lord’s Supper were after sundown (making that Friday night).  Jesus led to Annas, then to Caiaphas, and then to the Sanhedrin; Peter’s denial [ALL FRIDAY NIGHT]; The day of Friday begins and was now the fourteenth of Nisan, or Friday (the day of Friday; remembering a Biblical day begins at evening).  Jesus is brought to Pilate, then to Herod’s palace, and back to Pilate; Judas Hangs Himself; Crowd chooses Barabbas; Passover Lamb Sacrificed [Leviticus 23:8] = Jesus is scourged, condemned, and crucified.

SABBATH (Nisan 15): (Exodus 13:3-7 & 15; Leviticus 23:5-8): (Matthew 26:17; 27:57-66; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42) The Passover Feast and Feast of Unleavened Bread = Jesus (God) rested [Just as in Genesis 2:1-3]; Joseph of Arimathaea begs the body of Jesus.

SUNDAY (Nisan 16): (Exodus 23:16; 34:22; Leviticus 23:7 & 10-14): (Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-20; Luke 24:1-32; John 20:1-18) The Wave-Sheaf or First Fruits Festival = The Resurrection of Christ.  Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene; Then to His Disciples; Then to the two on the road to Emmaus.
