CIRCUMCISION BIBLICALLY
A) OUR LORD’S EXAMPLE.
B) SOME LAWS DO CHANGE AFTER THE CROSS.
C) TO BE CLEAR.
D) THE BOTTOM LINE.
E) IF YOU ARE GOING TO CIRCUMCISE.
A) OUR LORD’S EXAMPLE
The fact that our Lord Himself, Who instituted the act of circumcision, was circumcised on the eighth day according to His Own Law (see John 7:22; Lev. 12:3), should be plain enough that this act should be performed. However, see below.
B) SOME LAWS DO CHANGE AFTER THE CROSS
However, apparently, after the death of our Lord, Paul instructs us that the institution has been canceled, or made of none effect, and that the true circumcision that our Lord is/was looking for all along is that of a heart transformation:
Romans 2:25: “For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the Law: but if thou be a breaker of the Law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision [no profit].
Romans 2:26: “Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the Law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision [as if he were circumcised]?
Romans 2:27: “And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the Law, judge thee [judged righteous], who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the Law [the circumcised dies, the uncircumcised lives]?
Romans 2:28: “For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly [circumcised meaning nothing]; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:
Romans 2:29: “But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly [heart transformation]; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, and not in the letter [of the Law]; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
Romans 3:1: “What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?” [Apparently None].
Thus, the surprise of the circumcised (Jews) in Acts 10:45: “And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
And it is God Who is the final Judge: “Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.” Romans 3:30. Therefore, the person is judged by his faith in God and not his circumcision (physical).
C) TO BE CLEAR
Paul points this out even more clearly, without my need of explanation, in:
Romans 4:8: “Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Romans 4:9: “Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
Romans 4:10: “How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Romans 4:11: “And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
Romans 4:12: “And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
Romans 4:13: “For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith.”
D) Which brings us to the BOTTOM LINE
Acts 15:5-9: “And put no difference between us [those who are circumcised] and them [those who are not].”
Romans 2:29: “But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.”
First Corinthians 7:18-19: ““Is any man called being circumcised? let him not become uncircumcised. Is any called in uncircumcision? let him not be circumcised. Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the Commandments of God.”
Galatians 5:6: “For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.”
Galatians 6:15: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.”
Philippians 3:3: “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the Spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”
Colossians 3:11: “Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
E) IF YOU ARE GOING TO CIRCUMCISE
It is a sign between you and God that your child (or you if older) is dedicated to Him: Genesis 17:11.
It must be done on the eighth day (for health reasons; ask your doctor and he/she will verify this): Genesis 17:12 (even if it falls on the Sabbath Day; John 7:22-23).
Because it is a commitment “to the oracles of God,” Romans 3:1-2.
