Definitions Of
Biblical Blasphemy

There are nine (9) forms of blasphemy listed in the Bible (see if you can find more).

1) CLAIMING TO BE ONE WITH GOD, OR GOD HIMSELF (Matthew 26:63-65; Mark 14:61-64; John 10:30-36; Second Thessalonians 2:4; Revelation 13:1; 17:3).

“When Christ declared Himself the Son of God, Caiaphas, in pretended horror, rent his robe, and accused the Holy One of Israel of blasphemy.”  CC:323.

“[207] The whole nation of the Jews called God their Father, therefore they would not have been so enraged if Christ had represented Himself as standing in the same relation to God.  But they accused Him of [208] blasphemy, showing that they understood Him as making this claim in the highest sense.”  DA:207-208.

2) CLAIMING TO FORGIVE SINS (Matthew 9:2-3; Mark 2:7; Luke 5:21).

“The Pharisees caught at these words as blasphemy, and conceived that they could present this as a sin worthy of death.  They said in their hearts, ‘He blasphemeth:  who can forgive sins but One, even God?’ Mark 2:7, R. V.”  DA:269.

3) TO COMMIT A TRESPASS AGAINST GOD BY BREAKING OR DISREGARDING [DISRESPECTING] HIS LAW (Ezekiel 20:27; Romans 2:22-24).

“This spurious character of religion is on the increase, and many whose hearts are carnal prate of the grace of Christ, while at the same time they openly blaspheme the Name of the God of Heaven by casting contempt upon the Law of God, which rebukes their inconsistent course and detects their unchristlike character.”  RH, August 28, 1894.

“It was a hard struggle for Paul -- heretofore able to say of himself, as far as outward acts were concerned, as ‘touching the righteousness which is in the Law, blameless’ -- to see himself a transgressor, all his supposed goodness swept away.  It was a hard struggle for him to give up his supposed righteousness, and cast himself for salvation on the One he had despised.  But he yielded to the convictions of the Spirit.  The far-reaching claims of the Law of God took hold of his life, reaching to the thoughts and emotions of his sin-corrupted heart.  With eyes anointed by the grace of God, he saw the mistakes of his life.  From a proud Pharisee, who thought himself justified by his good works, he was changed to a humble suppliant for mercy.  The tongue, once so ready to blaspheme the Name of Christ, became eloquent in sounding the praises of Him Who had called him out of darkness into His marvelous light.”  RH, June 3, 1902.

“They disregard God’s Law, enacting man-made laws, and trying, by their cruel inventions, to compel men to blaspheme God, as they themselves are doing.”  ST, March 21, 1900.

4) UNWORTHY CONDUCT THAT MISREPRESENTS THE CHARACTER OF GOD (Exodus 20:7; Second Samuel 12:14; [something Paul, when he was Saul, attempted to have Christians do in Acts 26:11]; Mark 7:22; Romans 2:24; Colossians 3:8; [and possibly First Timothy 1:20]; First Timothy 6:1; Titus 2:5; Revelation 2:9).

“Ever remember what is due to our Christian profession as God’s peculiar people; and beware lest in the exercise of personal independence your influence may work against the purposes of God, and you, through Satan’s devices, become a stumbling block, directly in the way of those who are weak and halting.  There is danger of giving our enemies occasion to blaspheme God and heap scorn upon believers in the truth.”  1MCP:266; 5T:477-478 (1889).

“[378] Nathan tells David that, because of his repentance and humble confession, God will forgive his sin, and avert a part of the threatened calamity, and spare his life; yet he should be punished, because he had [379] given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.”  1SP:378-379.

“He [David] thus acknowledges, before his people and chief men, that this is the punishment God has brought upon him because of his sin, which has given the enemies of the Lord occasion to blaspheme; that the enraged Benjamite might be accomplishing his part of the punishment predicted, and that if he bore these things with humility, the Lord would lessen his affliction, and turn the curse of Shimei into a blessing.”  1SP:383; 2BC:1024.

“The closing years of David’s life were marked with faithful devotion to God.  He mourned over his sins and departure from God’s just precepts, which had darkened his character, and given occasion for the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.”  1SP:387.

“Cease to dwell upon the shortcomings of others.  Keep the tongue sanctified unto God.  Refrain from saying anything that might detract from the influence of another; for by indulging in these words of criticism, you blaspheme God’s holy name as verily as you would were you to swear.”  5BC:1093; 1SAT:367.

“[477] Ever remember what is due to our Christian profession as God’s peculiar people; and beware lest, in the exercise of personal independence, your influence may work against the purposes of God, and you, through Satan’s devices, become a stumbling block, directly in the way of those who are weak [478] and halting.  There is danger of giving our enemies occasion to blaspheme God and heap scorn upon believers in the truth.”  5T:477-478.

“Brother Day, you were not as careful as you should have been to abstain from all appearance of evil before Sister Johnson left her husband. You were in her company, often alone in conversation with her.  However pure your motives, you have been judged, and now, especially since the death of your wife, unbelievers put their own construction on the matter; and if you should make her your wife you would bring a reproach upon yourself and the cause that your whole future life could not wipe away.  You would give the enemies of our faith cause to blaspheme.”  17MR:155.

“[323] While Satan works to [324] demoralize, by taking the control of minds, leading them to make mistakes in their plans, in their management, in their deportment, and trying to take advantage of every opportunity to reproach Jesus and cause the enemies of our faith by their unwise course to blaspheme, shall Christians stand back as spectators, acting only as critics, and be found on the side of Satan as accusers and yet make no truly interested efforts to bring in a better state of affairs?”  18MR:323-324.

“He was advised that this was not wisdom, and would not result in glorifying God, but would give our enemies occasion to cast reflections upon the whole ministry.  It is Satan’s object to ensnare men who handle sacred things, that he may lead them to do things that will bring the ministry down on a level with common things, so that sinners may be furnished with an excuse for their own impenitence and sin.  When the words and the deportment of the minister are not after Christ’s example, but are in imitation of the words and ways of the great deceiver, our enemies have occasion to blaspheme.”  1888M:53.

“It is Satan’s object to ensnare men who handle sacred things, that he may lead them to do things that will bring the ministry down on a level with common things, so that sinners may be furnished with an excuse for their own impenitence and sin.  When the words and the deportment of the minister are not after the Christ’s example, but are in imitation of the words and ways of the great deceiver, our enemies have occasion to blaspheme.”  GC88:54; PaM:50.

“I have been shown that this defect in your character has caused men and women to curse you in their hearts, and almost to blaspheme God.  Now if I thought this could not be corrected, I would not write as I do.  It is your duty as a Christian physician to educate your manners and your habits for the sickroom, to be cheerful and affable, to manifest tender sympathy, to converse freely on the subjects essential to your patients and which come within the sphere of your practice.  You can reach a high standard in your practice.”  MM:148.

5) EVIL-SPEAKING OF GOD IN GENERAL (Leviticus 24:11; Numbers 21:5; First Kings 21:10 [quoted in RH, January 8, 1914]; Second Kings 19:22; Psalm 74:10, 18; Isaiah 52:5; Matthew 12:32; Luke 12:10; James 2:7[quoted in RH, October 6, 1891]; Revelation 13:5-6 [quoted in ST, June 18, 1894]).

“Christ also spoke pointedly to every class of men.  He reproved those who dominated over their fellow men, those whose passions and prejudices caused many to err and compelled many to blaspheme God.”  1NL:102.

“The sins committed by the leaders of Israel would have an influence to lessen the heinousness of crime in the minds and consciences of the people, and would be brought to the notice of other nations, who fear not God, but who trample upon his authority; and they would be led to blaspheme the God of Israel.”  1SP:388; 4aSG:94-95.

“I will here give a copy of a letter written to Brother A, of Oswego County, New York:  ‘I was shown some things in regard to you.  I saw that you were deceived in regard to yourself.  You have given occasion for the enemies of our faith to blaspheme, and to reproach Sabbathkeepers.”  1T:359.

“Christ also spoke pointedly to every class of men.  He reproved those who dominated over their fellow men, those whose passions and prejudices caused many to err and compelled many to blaspheme God.”  2SM:150.

“God will forgive his [David’s] sin, and avert a part of the threatened calamity, and spare his life.  Yet he should be punished, because he had given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.”  4aSG:87.

“He [David] thus acknowledges before his people and chief men, that this is the punishment God has brought upon him because of his sin, which has given the enemies of the Lord occasion to blaspheme.”  4aSG:90.

“The closing years of David’s life were marked with faithful devotion to God.  He mourned over his sins and departure from God’s just precepts, which had darkened his character, and given occasion for the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.”  4aSG:94.

“Many who are not subdued and elevated and made strong in the love of the One Saviour, curse their fate, and curse the white man, and almost blaspheme God, Who made them.”  4MR:8.

“Thus will be made an end of sin, with all the woe and ruin which have resulted from it.  Says the psalmist:  ‘Thou hast destroyed the wicked, thou hast put out their name forever and ever.  O thou enemy, destructions are come to a perpetual end.’  [Psalm 9:5-6].  John, in the Revelation, looking forward to the eternal state, hears a universal anthem of praise, undisturbed by one note of discord.  Every creature in Heaven and earth was heard ascribing glory to God. [Revelation 5:13.]  There will then be no lost souls to blaspheme God, as they writhe in never-ending torment; no wretched beings in hell will mingle their shrieks with the songs of the saved.”  GC88:545; GC:545; Hvn:130.

“Like the men before the Flood, the Canaanites lived only to blaspheme Heaven and defile the earth.”  PP:492.

“Give no occasion to any man to blaspheme the name of God or speak disrespectfully of our faith for anything you have done.”  RH, December 16, 1884.

“God chose a people for himself, and gave them the name of Christian.  This is a royal name, given to those who join themselves to Christ.  It is of this name that James is speaking when he says, ‘Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?  Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?’ ”  RH, November 23, 1905.

“Yet he [David] should be punished, because he had given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.  This occasion has been improved by the enemies of God, from David’s day until the present time.”  TSB:94.

6) REJECTION OF GOD (Matthew 12:31; Mark 3:29; Acts 26:11).

“Saul ‘made havoc of the Church,’ entering into every house, seizing men and women and committing them to prison.  Of his zeal in this cruel work, Saul said at a later date:  [Acts 26:11 quoted].”  RH, March 2, 1911.

“The evil heart of unbelief will make falsehood appear as truth and truth as falsehood, and will adhere to this position, whatever evidence may be produced.  The terrible accusation against Christ, if perseveringly persisted in, places the guilty ones in a position where rays of light from Heaven cannot reach them.  They will continue to walk in the light of the sparks of their own kindling, until they will blaspheme the most sacred influences that ever came from Heaven.”  1888M:912.

7) DENYING JESUS AS THE MESSIAH (Luke 22:65; John 10:36; Acts 13:45; 18:5-6; First Timothy 1:13).

“Christ also spoke pointedly to every class of men.  He reproved those who dominated over their fellow men, those whose passions and prejudices caused many to err and compelled many to blaspheme God.  The sword of truth was blunted by apologies and suppositions; but Christ called things by their right names.  The ax was laid to the root of the tree.  He showed that all the religious forms of worship could not save the Jewish nation, because they did not behold and receive by faith the Lamb of God as their Saviour.”  2SM:150.

“Paul did not seek to shield himself; he paints his sin in its darkest hue, not attempting to lessen his guilt.  He says: ‘Many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.  And I punished them off in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.’  He does not hesitate to declare that ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.’ “  5T:641; ST, March 16, 1888.

“One thing he [Paul] kept steadfastly before him in all his work -- to be faithful to Christ, Who, when he was blaspheming His Name and using every means in his power to make others blaspheme It, had revealed Himself to him.”  Letter 107, 1904; 7BC:905; SR:311.

“There has been as great a change in the spirit of the apostle [Paul], as in his outward appearance.  Then he was ‘breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples;’ he ‘made havoc of the Church;’ he ‘haled men and women to prison;’ he ‘compelled them to blaspheme;’ he was ‘exceedingly mad’ against all who revered the name of Jesus.”  LP:185.

“One aim he kept steadfastly before him, -- to be faithful to Christ, Who, when Paul was blaspheming His Name, and using every power within his reach to make others blaspheme It, had revealed Himself to him.”  RH, December 29, 1910; RH, April 4, 1912; ST, July 20, 1904.

8) ATTRIBUTING TO SATAN THE POWER OF GOD (Matthew 10:25; 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15, 18-19; First Timothy 1:20).

Possibly this statement:  “When standing by the graves of their children, the afflicted parents look upon their bereavement as a special dispensation of Providence, when, by inexcusable ignorance, their own course has destroyed the lives of their children.  To then charge their death to Providence is blasphemy.”  CH:175; CT:78.

“Paul in his Second Epistle to Timothy afterward referred to the machinations of this enemy of the faith:  ‘Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil.  The Lord reward him according to his works.’  In his First Epistle he spoke in a similar manner of Hymeneus and Alexander as among those who ‘concerning faith have made shipwreck;’ ‘whom,’ he says, ‘I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme.’  These men had departed from the faith of the gospel, and furthermore had done despite to the Spirit of grace by attributing to the power of Satan the wonderful revelations made to Paul.”  LP:305; 7BC:912.

9) SAYING YOU ARE A JEW (Spiritual Israel) BUT DOING THE WORKS OF SATAN (Revelation 2:9).

Jesus Stated, “salvation is of the Jews,” John 4:22.  What He meant and means is that we need to become grafted into (Rom. 11:17-19) the Jewish lifestyle.  And when you become “born again” and begin living the Christian lifestyle, but then go back to your old self, you are committing the sin of blasphemy.
