A) THREE BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS IN THE BIBLE

There are only three birthday celebrations in the Bible.  And with each one, someone died.

The First is in Genesis 40:20-22.

The Second is in Matthew 14:6-9.

The Third is in Mark 6:21-27.

However, the Second and Third are mentioning the same event and therefore there are only two birthday celebrations mentioned in the Bible.

B) HEATHEN ONLY

Theories have been thus brought forth that since these birthday events are “heathen” in nature, Christians should not be celebrating this event.  Also, because someone died when birthdays occurred, this event should not be celebrated by Christians (stay with me).  And lastly, since birthdays are bad (someone died) and only “heathens” celebrate them, the next conclusion is that Jesus obscured his birth “date,” possibly because He did not want us to be celebrating His, or any birthdays.

Just a little note on the last one:  We do know Biblically the year He was to be born through the study of Daniel and the other prophets.  In fact, Jesus Himself admonishes the Jewish nation that they should have known “the time of thy [His Nations] visitation,” Luke 19:44.

Besides anything mentioned above, the reason I personally believe one should not be celebrating birthdays is because of learning what “The Satanic Bible” has to say about them.  My point in writing this article is to stress what is NOT KNOWN by most Christians, but is commonly known by most Satanist’s groups, as documented in Anton LaVey’s, “The Satanic Bible.”  Here is what we find.

The most important holiday in Satanism is one’s own birthday (first in line to “All-Hollows-Eve” being the Second most important), as it is the birth-date of one’s own god (you).  It is the highest, and most important holiday that any Satanist can observe.  It is a reminder that the Satanist, committed to true “vital existence,” should consider himself (or herself) as the most important person in his own life.

LaVey recommends that a Satanist celebrate his own birthday in any way he chooses, with as much pomp and ceremony as he sees fit.  The Satanic celebration of one’s own birthday can thus be seen as something of a “Black Mass,” by redirecting to oneself the sanctimony and celebration typically reserved for the many “high holy days,” commemorating the births of key gods or saints in other religions.

There are three Satanic holidays named by Anton LaVey in “The Satanic Bible.”  But what is interesting, the others are not considered to be as sacred as (1) one’s own birthday (self-worship); (2) Halloween (All-Hollows-Eve).  Since it is the Second Highest Satanic Holiday, see my Bible Study:  “Halloween.”

You may argue that that is how Satanists view it, but not how “Christians” view it.  Keep arguing your point that way while Satan laughs.  You might consider instead of receiving gifts, to give gifts (but that would still acknowledge the day as being special for some reason).

C) CONCLUSION

If the Bible wasn’t enough, and Satanic writings aren’t enough, try my favorite Bible Commentator:  “I have resolved from this time to make Christ first and last and best in everything.  I will not sanction feasts made to celebrate birthday or marriage anniversaries, but will bend all my energies to lift up Jesus among the people.”  ST, January 4, 1883.
