PROPHETS IN THE LAST DAYS
A) INTRODUCTION.
B) PROPHETS AFTER THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE CANON.
C) IN CONCLUSION.
A) INTRODUCTION
The “main” argument is that there cannot be any additions to the sacred Word of God as we have it. I agree to a certain extent. If the additions do not contradict the Holy Scriptures, then one must test the revelation to see if it is worthy to be accepted and from God. See my Bible Study: PROPHET, TESTS OF A.”
And just a thought. A Bible Commentary could be understood to be adding to the Word of God. Test your Commentaries.
B) PROPHETS AFTER THE ACCEPTANCE OF THE CANON
God tells us in Proverbs 29:18: “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the Law, happy is he.”
I like the first part about “no vision.” But according to prophet haters, the last part should read:
“But he that keepeth the false doctrine of no last day prophets, unhappy is he.”
Do the Holy Scriptures speak of any new revelations after Peter, Paul, and John? Let’s read Acts 2:17-18:
“[17] And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:”
“[18] And on My servants and on My handmaidens I will pour out in those days of My Spirit; and they shall prophesy:”
Notice, “in the last days” and “in those days,” clearly inferring well after the Canon was standardized.
Romans 12:6 admonishes: “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith. . .”
And First Corinthians 12:10 follows along those same lines with, “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues. . .”
And Paul whished upon some that they should have the gift of prophecy: “Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.” First Corinthians 14:1.
Continuing on, First Corinthians 14:3-5: “[3] But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. [4] He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the Church. [5] I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the Church may receive edifying.”
And according to Ephesians 4:11: “And He gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;. . .”
The reason why is helpful. Here is verses 12 & 13:
"[12] For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:”
“[13] Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:”
According to First Timothy 5:20, we are to “Despise not prophesyings.”
If we go to Revelation 12:17 we read:
“And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the Commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.”
Bible scholars understand that a “woman” in the Book of Revelation equals a “church,” either corrupt or righteous. However, let this Book also define what “the testimony of Jesus Christ” is. To do that we go to Revelation 19:10:
“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
C) IN CONCLUSION
Something to keep in mind is First Samuel 9:9:
“(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer).”
Thus, “Seer” and “Prophet” are one-and-the-same-thing. And it is also understood from First Corinthians 12:14-26, that we need all functioning members in order to do the work of our Lord; which would include the gift of prophecy.
According to what we have just went through, there will be the gift of prophecy after Peter, Paul, and John; even to the “latter days.”
