Books Listed In The Bible
*** = Books Lost To Us.
Note: See my Bible Study: “PROPHETS, LIST OF,” because these may have written Books we are not told of and could be added to this list.
Genesis 5:1 = “The Book Of The Generations Of Adam” = A list of the offspring of Adam; most likely a portion of the Book of Genesis. Therefore, since either there was no need for duplicating the work of Genesis, It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon. Or, we no longer have access to it.
Exodus 17:14 = “A Book” = A Book of Memorial; most likely a portion of the Book of Exodus. Therefore, since either there was no need for duplicating the work of Genesis, It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon. Or, we no longer have access to it.
Exodus 24:7 = “The Book Of The Covenant” = That the Book of Exodus 17:14 is “the judgments which God would have them observe, and the promises on condition that they would obey Him,” 1SP:240; is clear, and It obviously kept growing from here and became known as “The Book Of The Covenant.” It may be just a duplicate of what we have in the Book of Exodus, and as such, It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon. Or, we no longer have access to it.
Exodus 32:32-33 = “The Book Of Life” = See my Bible Study, “BOOK OF LIFE.”
“The Book here referred to is the Book of Records in Heaven, where every name is recorded, and their acts, their sins, and obedience are faithfully written. When any one commits sins which are too grievous for the Lord to pardon, their names are erased from the Book [of Life], and they are devoted to destruction.” 3SG:285; 7BC:987; ST, May 27, 1880; 1SP:252-253.
“[246] The memorial of your life will be written in the book of records; and, if you are finally an overcomer, there will be souls [247] saved through your efforts, by your self-denial, your good words and consistent Christian life. And when the rewards are finally distributed to all as their works have been, redeemed souls will call you blessed, and the Master will say: ‘Well done, good and faithful servant,’ ‘enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.’ ” 3T:246.
Numbers 5:23 = “Curses In A Book” = Curses of a bad wife; which are written here in this Chapter, and as such, It may not have been necessary to duplicate It in the Canon.
*** Numbers 21:14 = “Book Of The Wars Of The Lord” = A list of Wars, specifically: “What He did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,” portions of which we have here. It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon, since it would have been only duplicating Its work. Or, we no longer have access to it.
Deuteronomy 17:18 = “A Book” = A Book of instruction to Israel’s Kings; a portion of which is in this Chapter. It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon, since it would have been only duplicating Its work. Or, we no longer have access to it.
Deuteronomy 28:58 & 61; 29:20-21 & 27; 30:10; 31:24 & 26 = “This Book” = The Laws of the Book of Deuteronomy.

***Joshua 10:13 = “The Book Of Jasher” = Lost to us. However, there are portions of this Book that we do have: “The words of Joshua which he spake to the Lord at the battle of Beth-horon,” in Joshua 10:12-13 and what has been called, “The Song of the Bow,” which David composed upon the death of Saul and Jonathan in Second Samuel 1:18-27. It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon, since it would have been only duplicating Its work. Or, we no longer have access to it.
***Joshua 18:9 = “A Book” = The Promised Land described in a Book, specifically: “described it by cities into seven parts,” portions of which we have (i.e., a land of “milk and honey;” Etcetera). It may not have been necessary to include It in the Canon, since it would have been only duplicating Its work. Or, we no longer have access to it.
Joshua 23:6; Second Kings 14:6; Nehemiah 8:1 = “The Book Of The Law Of Moses” = The Book of Deuteronomy and or all the Books of Moses (The “Pentateuch”).

***Second Samuel 1:18 = “The Book Of Jasher” = See Joshua 10:13 above.
***First Kings 11:41 = “The Book Of The Acts Of Solomon” = Other accounts of Solomon lost to us. Or, It may be contained in portions of First Kings and First Chronicles.

If there are parts not included, we don’t know of them.
First Kings 14:29; 15:7 & 23; 22:45; Second Kings 8:23; 12:19; 14:18; 15:6 & 36; 16:19; 20:20; 21:17; 21:25; 23:28; 24:5 = “The Book Of The Chronicles Of The Kings Of Judah” = Part of which must be contained in the Books of First & Second Chronicles. If there are parts not included, we don’t know of them.
Second Kings 22:10 = “A Book” = That of Second Kings 22:8 (see Joshua 1:8).
Second Kings 22:13 = “This Book” = That of Second Kings 22:8 (see Joshua 1:8).
Second Kings 22:16 = “The Book” = That of Second Kings 22:8 (see Joshua 1:8).
Second Kings 23:2, 21 = “The Book Of The Covenant” = See my Exodus 24:7 Note Above.
Second Kings 23:3 = “This Book” = The same as Second Kings 23:2 (see Exodus 24:7 Note Above).
Second Kings 23:24 = “The Book” = That of Second Kings, Chapters 22 & 23.

***First Chronicles 29:29 = “The Book Of Samuel” = Most likely that of the Books of First & Second Samuel. Or a piece of work we no longer have access to. Or there was no need to duplicate It in the Canon.
***First Chronicles 29:29 = “The Book Of Nathan” = Possibly lost to us, or, it is thought that the “Book of Samuel” comprises the First Book of Samuel, while the Books of Nathan and Gad comprise the Second Book of Samuel, written both by Nathan and Gad.
***First Chronicles 29:29 = “The Book Of Gad” = Lost to us. See Note Above under “The Book Of Nathan.”
***Second Chronicles 9:29 = “The Book Of Nathan” = See my First Chronicles 29:29 Note Above.
Note: Possible Books, “prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer.”
***Second Chronicles 12:15 = “The Book Of Shemaiah” = Lost to us. However, this statement as
found in Second Chronicles 12:5 may be in his Book: “Ye have forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.” Therefore, we may have this Book already included in the Canon, and there would be no need to duplicate Its works. Or, we only have portions of It.
Second Chronicles 17:9; 34:14; Nehemiah 9:3 = “The Book Of The Law Of The Lord” = The same as Joshua 1:8; 8:31 & 34; 23:6, with the added notes of Joshua (Jos. 24:26).
***Second Chronicles 20:34 = “The Book Of Jehu” = Lost To Us. However, this may be in his Book as found in First Kings 16:2-4, (see also verse 7): “[2] Forasmuch as I exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over My people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of Jeroboam, and hast made My people Israel to sin, to provoke Me to anger with their sins; [3] Behold, I will take away the posterity of Baasha, and the posterity of his house; and will make thy house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. [4] Him that dieth of Baasha in the city shall the dogs eat; and him that dieth of his in the fields shall the fowls of the air eat.”
If there be more in his Book, we do not have It, or do not know of It.
Second Chronicles 20:34; 33:18 = “The Book Of The Kings Of Israel” = Which must include the Books of First & Second Samuel and First & Second Kings (and possibly First & Second Chronicles, although “Chronicles” is specified in other statements; see 2Ki. 23:8; 24:5).

Second Chronicles 34:21, 24 = “The Book” = The same as Second Chronicles 34:15 (see Joshua 1:8 above).
Second Chronicles 34:21, 31 = “The Book” = The same as Second Chronicles 34:15 (see Joshua 1:8 above).
***Ezra 4:15 = “The Book Of The Records” = Archives would have included annals and chronicles. Royal annals were kept throughout the ancient Near East, with most examples coming from mid-second millennium Hittite kings and from the ninth to the sixth-century, Assyria and Babylon. The annals could be represented by annalistic royal inscriptions giving detailed accounts of military campaigns. In addition, there are court chronicles that give information of important events in each year. The Book of Records is the public royal chronicle in which the chief events of the history of the realm were recorded, called, “the Book of Records of the Chronicles,” in Esther 6:1. It is the recording of daily events in the kingdom, part of which we have, and part of which is most likely lost to us. Or, we have them all and there was no need to duplicate them in the Canon.
Nehemiah 8:5 = “The Book” = That of verses 1 & 3 (see Joshua 1:8 & 23:6).
Nehemiah 8:8 = “The Book In The Law OF God” = The same as that of verses 1 & 3 & 5 (see Joshua 1:8 & 23:6).
Nehemiah 12:23 = “The Book Of The Chronicles” = Most likely the same as that of First Chronicles 9:1.
Esther 2:23 = “The Book Of The Chronicles” = Not that of Israel’s kings, but of Media and Persia’s kings (see Ezra 4:15 above).
Esther 6:1 = “The Book Of Records Of The Chronicles” = See my Ezra 4:15 Note above.
Esther 9:32 = “The Book” = The same as Esther 6:1.
Esther 10:2 = “The Book Of The Chronicles Of The Kings Of Media And Persia” = The same as Esther 6:1.
Job 19:23 = “A Book” = Most likely The Book of Job.
Job 31:35 = “A Book” = Job wishes his friends, who charged him with hypocrisy, would draw up the charge in writing; which is possibly a portion or all of this Book of Job.
Psalm 40:7 = “The Book” = These two words in verse 7, i.e., “volume” and “book,” are used of any writing, and both express the same thing. Now this “volume of the Book” is the “Law of Moses,” which is commonly and emphatically called “the Book,” and was made up in the form of a roll or volume, as the Hebrew Books generally were. As such, this place manifestly points to Christ, concerning Whom much is said in the Books of Moses.
Psalm 56:8; 139:16 = “Thy Book” = Most likely the Book of Remembrance; which is in Heaven.
Psalm 69:28 = “The Book Of The Living” = Most likely “The Book Of Life,” Exodus 32:32-33; which is in Heaven.
Isaiah 29:11 = “A Book” = Just a discussion; no reference to any particular book.
Isaiah 29:12 = “The Book” = Just a discussion; no reference to any particular book.
Isaiah 29:18 = “The Book” = Just a discussion; no reference to any particular book.
Isaiah 30:18 = “A Book” = Most likely the Book of Isaiah.
Isaiah 34:16 = “The Book Of The Lord” = Some scholars suggest that Isaiah’s writing of this prophecy will be the permanent record to which future generations can refer. Others suggest a “Book of Divinity,” that the Hebrews held as sacred. Still others see the scroll as the writings of prophecy in general. And I suggest that it also may be the writings of Moses. However, the first suggestion seems most likely because God had instructed Isaiah to put his prophecies into “a Book” as a permanent record for future generations (Isa. 30:8). Because Isaiah spoke the Word of the Lord, we can expect that he also wrote the Book of the Lord; which is most likely his Book, The Book of Isaiah.
Jeremiah 25:13 = “This Book” = The Book of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 30:2 = “A Book” = The Book of Jeremiah; or just a portion of it.
Jeremiah 32:12 = “The Book Of The Purchase” = This was a legal agreement in the courtyard. Business was often transacted in places like the city gate, where the elders of the city sat (Ruth 4:1; Pro. 31:23). The notation that Jeremiah signed and sealed his deed for the purchase of Hanamel’s field before witnesses is what he is referring to here. We may have It as recorded here, or It was not needed to be added to the Canon.
Jeremiah 36:2 & 4; 45:1; 51:60 = “A Book” = The Book of Jeremiah; or just a portion of it.
Jeremiah 36:8 & 10 & 11 & 13 & 18 & 32 = “The Book” = The same as that of Jeremiah 36:2 & 4.
Jeremiah 51:63 = “This Book” = The Book of Jeremiah; or just a portion of it.
Ezekiel 2:9 = “A Book” = Most likely the Book of Ezekiel; or portions of it.
Daniel 7:10 = “The Books” = The Book of Remembrance (Malachi 3:16; in Heaven), The Book of Life (Exodus 32:32-33; in Heaven), the Bible (to compare against Its Standards), and any others I am not aware of or have missed here in this layout.
Daniel 9:2 = “Books” = All the Books available to Daniel at that time concerning the 70-year prophecy of Jeremiah (see 2Ch. 36:21; Ezra 1:1; Isa. 23:15 & 17; Jer. 25:11-12; 29:10; Zec. 1:12; 7:5).
Daniel 12:1 = “The Book” = The Book of Life; in Heaven.
Daniel 12:4 = “The Book” = The Book of Daniel.
Nahum 1:1 = “The Book Of The Vision Of Nahum” = The Book of Nahum.
Malachi 3:16 = “A Book Of Remembrance” = The expression, “Book of Remembrance,” is found only here in Scripture, although the idea of God having “a Book” in which He records entries of behavior is found elsewhere (e.g., Exo. 17:14; 32:32; Psa. 56:8; 139:16; Isa. 4:3; 65:6; Eze. 13:9). This Book is, of course, kept in Heaven.
Matthew 1:1 = “The Book Of The Generation Of Jesus Christ” = The Book of Matthew; or just Matthew’s Genealogical list.
Luke 1:3 = “to write upon thee” = The Book of Luke.
Luke 3:4; 4:17, 20 = “The Book” = The Book of Isaiah.
Luke 20:42; Acts 1:20 = “The Book Of Psalms” = The Book of Psalms.
John 20:30 = “This Book” = The Book of John.
Acts 7:42 = “The Book Of The Prophets” = From the “Cambridge Bible Commentary” we read: “The Hebrews divided their Scriptures into three sections, the Law, the Prophets, and the Hagiographa (called the Psalms in Luke 24:44), and each of these parts is looked upon as a special and separate book. The Law comprised the five books of Moses. The earlier prophets were the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings: the later prophets were Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the twelve which we now call Minor Prophets. The Hagiographa consisted of the following books in the order here given: Psalms (and the expression of Luke 24:44 will be understood because the Psalms stand first in this section), Proverbs, Job, the Song of Songs, Ruth, Lamentations, Ecclesiastes, Esther (these five last mentioned were called the five rolls, being written on separate rolls for use at special festival and fast services), Daniel, Ezra (Nehemiah), and Chronicles.”
Philippians 4:3 = “The Book Of Life” = See my Bible Study, “BOOK OF LIFE, THE.” See Exodus 32:32-33 note above.
Second Timothy 4:13 = “The Books” = Most likely copies of the Old Testament; but could also be his own writings to go over and readdress.
Second Timothy 4:13 = “The Parchments” = These dressed skins were first made at Pergamum and so termed “parchments.” They in particular would likely be copies of the Old Testament Books, because a parchment was more expensive than papyrus. They could also possibly even be copies of Christ’s sayings (see Luke 1:1-4).
Hebrews 9:19 = “The Book” = The Book of the Covenant (Exodus 24:7), i.e., the Book of the Law (see Joshua 1:8 above); although there is no mention of ever sprinkling the Book of the Covenant; unless it is in the Most Holy Place’s Ark of the Covenant.
Hebrews 10:7 = “The Book” = Which equals portions of the Old Testament that discuss the mission of Christ; or all of the Old Testament.
Revelation 1:11 = “A Book” = Which becomes = The Book of Revelation.
Revelation 3:5; 13:8; 17:8; 20:12 & 15 & 19 = “The Book Of Life” = See my Bible Study, “BOOK OF LIFE, THE.” See my Exodus 32:32-33 Note above.
Revelation 5:1 = “A Book” = The one which was sealed with “seven seals” and contains the description of each seal. This most likely is The Book Of Remembrance (see EGW below); which is in Heaven.
“When Pilate washed his hands, saying, ‘I am innocent of the blood of This just Person,’ the priests joined with the ignorant mob in declaring passionately, ‘His blood be on us, and on our children.’ Matthew 27:24, 25. {COL:293.3}.
“Thus the Jewish leaders made their choice. Their decision was registered in the book which John saw in the hand of Him that sat upon the throne, the book which no man could open. In all its vindictiveness this decision will appear before them in the day when this book is unsealed by the Lion of the tribe of Judah.” COL:293.3-294.1.
Or: Just what is this “Book” that was “sealed,” Revelation 5:1, in this Chapter? It is the “Title Deed To This Earth.” And since Christ Messiah has purchased it with His “blood,” verses 6 & 9, He has the right to own it. Seven “seals” are upon this “Book” (Rev. 5:1). And these “seals,” when they are opened, they describe what is to take place upon this earth. Thus, it is the “Title Deed To This Earth.”
Second Corinthians 4:4, teaches us that Satan is “the god of this world.” Whereas First Corinthians 10:26, teaches us that “the earth is the Lord’s.” Therefore, Satan must be a thief, who has stolen this earth, and has possession of it. Just like a thief steals your acreage and has possession of it, but does not own it. He then attempts to sell your acreage back to you (in our case to Jesus). You state, “I already own it.” He states, “Prove it, I’m in possession of it.” You then go through the process of obtaining a copy of the “deed” with your name on it (i.e., Christ’s Name). This is what is taking place here in the beginning (verses 1-9) of this Chapter.
This would be an example of the “CODE OF CRIMINAL PROCEDURE,” TITLE 1. CODE OF CRIMINAL PROCEDURE, CHAPTER 47. DISPOSITION OF STOLEN PROPERTY, Art. 47.01. SUBJECT TO ORDER OF COURT. “(a) Except as provided by Subsection (b), an officer who comes into custody of property alleged to have been stolen shall hold it subject to the order of the proper court only if the ownership of the property is contested or disputed.”
Revelation 5:2 & 3 & 4 & 5 & 7 & 8 & 9 = “The Book” = That of (see my Note) Revelation 5:1; contained in this Chapter.
Revelation 10:2 = “A Little Book” = What is this little Book? Ezekiel had been told to eat a scroll from the Lord and then to go to his people and speak God’s Word to them. Ezekiel tells of his experience which, except in one detail, is identical to that of the experience of John: “Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.” Ezekiel 3:3. But the little Book of the Apocalypse was bitter in John’s stomach (Rev. 10:10). Thus, the “little Book” is the Word of God (or in just John and Ezekiel’s case, their writings).
*** Revelation 10:4 = “Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not” = Lost to us.
Revelation 10:8 & 9 & 10 = “The Little Book” = The “Book” of Revelation 10:2 (see my Note Above).
Revelation 20:12 = “The Books” = All the Books of Records, equaling the Book of Remembrance, The Book of the Law (to compare ones works against) and others we do not know of; or I am not mentioning here. Most or all of which are in Heaven.
Revelation 20:12 = “Another Book” = The Book of Life; in Heaven. See my Exodus 32:32-33 Note above.
Revelation 21:27 = “The Lamb’s Book Of Life” = The Book Of Life; in Heaven. See my Exodus 32:32-33 Note above.
Revelation 22:7 & 9 & 10 & 18 & 19 = “This Book” = The Book of Revelation.
Revelation 22:19 = “The Book” = “This Book” = The Book of Revelation.
